She was the devoted and very proud mother of Jacqueline Scholz of Lincoln, Russell and Linda Hietbrink of Marysville, Wash., Kenneth and Connie Hietbrink of Tulsa, Okla. and her step-daughter, Alda Wissink of Lincoln; as the grandmother of her special grandchildren, Shelly Thomas, James Grupe, Jeffrey Scholz, Mary Ann Mclain, Melissa Meissner and Colby Hietbrink; Step-Grandchildren David Wissink (deceased), Cecil Wissink, Daryl Wissink and Kevin Wissink; 16 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren; and as the loving wife and best friend for 47 years of the luckiest man in the world, Albert. She also leaves her sisters, Beatrice Traudt of Central City and Doris Miles of York, Neb.

Never to be detoured by the challenges of life, Gretchen remained vibrant and forceful. Her wonderful personality and sense of humor were exceeded only by her loving nature and her strength and grace in the face of adversity. We are all so proud of the strength, courage and determination she showed as, despite numerous health problems, she continued to live her life to the fullest with many hopes for the future. She did so love life. She was delighted to be able to attend her sister Beatrice's 94th birthday party in December, along with her sister Doris; and she was elated that she was able to spend Christmas with her son Kenneth and his family in Tulsa. These were her last two major goals and it was very rewarding to see her response. There were things she wanted to do and was able to do them even as her life shortened. But the day came when we were told in a very kind way there was nothing more to be done for her tired and failing heart and lungs. At the end, she was surrounded by her children who continued supporting her, and letting her know she was very much loved.

Everyone who has ever met her will never forget her. We her family, thank God for the time we have had with her and all that we have learned from her, including the importance of living every day to the fullest and not shying away from life's challenges. Our family would like to thank Dr. Anthony Ross, whom mother felt was her personal savior for assisting her through her many health challenges; as well as the kind and caring doctors and nurses at Bryan/LGH East who have the ability to understand the needs of their patients and provided the critical support she needed during this health crisis.
