Jami Lynn (Johnson) Wilcox

Jami Lynn Wilcox, 27, died Saturday (Feb. 28, 2004) at Community Hospital of McCook.

She was born March 31, 1976, to James B. and Rhonda K. (Hartzog) Johnson at Lincoln. She graduated from North Platte High School in 1993, Southeast Community College in Lincoln in 1995 and attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.

On June 1, 2002, she married Ryan Wilcox at McCook.

She was a laboratory technician at Community Hospital.

She was a member of the North Platte Presbyterian Church and had lived in McCook since February of 2002.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Ruth and Les Whaley and her grandfather-in-law, Robert Crocker.

Survivors include her husband, Ryan and children, Braden, Kassidy and Kailey, all of McCook; her parents, Jim and Rhonda of North Platte; a sister, Mindy and husband, Mike Crow of North Platte; grandparents, Ron and Marylou Hartzog of Ogallala; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Bob and Cindy Wilcox of McCook; grandparents-in-law, Bob and Phyllis Wilcox and Doris Crocker all of McCook; a sister-in-law, Ashley Wilcox; and two brother-in-laws, Kyle Wilcox and Tyler Wilcox.

Funeral services are Wednesday, 11 a.m., at McCook Christian Church with the Rev. Clark Bates officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park cemetery.

Visitation is today and Tuesday, 9 a.m.-8 p.m.

Memorials are being accepted in her name.

Edith Syble (Parsons) Wing

Edith Syble Wing, 84, died Tuesday (Jan. 13, 2004) at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook.

She was born June 30, 1919, in McCook to Edward and Eleanor (Sisson) Parsons. Her mother died three weeks later. Edward married Lucy Edwards who became a wonderful mother to Edith.

Edith attended school near the Cornell community and also in McCook. She received her GED in 1973.

In November of 1937, she married Roy High in McCook. Their son was born in August of 1938 and a short time later they moved to Colorado. A daughter, Gwen completed their family in 1941. The entire family was baptized in the Center, Colo., Methodist Church on April 6, 1947. Edith and the children moved back to McCook after Roy's death in 1949.

Edith married Alvy Wing in September of 1950 and they moved to Indianola. Alvy died in October of 1996.

She was a homemaker whose hobbies included: decorating wedding cakes, sewing, handiwork and gardening. She enjoyed art classes and wall papering for neighbors. She was a Girl Scout leader and active in volunteer work. She also was a caregiver to her father-in-law for many years.

She was a member of the Indianola Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, VFW and Fireman's Auxiliaries.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her step-mother; her husbands, Roy and Alvy; and two granddaughters.

Survivors include her son, Don High and wife, Caron of Indianola; her daughter Gwen and husband, Bill Davis of Trenton; a brother E. Olan Parsons and wife, Ruby of Wichita; 10 grandchildren, Monte High and wife Elizabeth of Fort Collins, Colo., Kyle High and wife, Diana of Farmington, N.M., Anthony High and friend, Tia of Indianola, Barbara and husband, Dennis Reed of Gretna, Steve Sughroue and special friend, Jocelyn Carmichael of McCook, Connie Sughroue of McCook, Kent Sughroue and wife Deena, of Kearney, Christina and husband, Steve Struebing of Kearney, Julie Sughroue of Silver Spring, Md., and Kara Sughroue of McLean, Virginia; 13 great-grandchildren, Danen and Kalem High, Elissa and Andrea Arterburn, Amie and Adam Sughroue, Elizabeth, Alexa and Mike Reed, Amanda and Megan Sughroue, Lauren and Kari Struebing and a multitude of other family and friends, including Dan Arterburn and Robert Sughroue.

Funeral services will be Friday at 11 a.m., at the Indianola United Methodist Church with Pastor David Rowe officiating. Burial will be in the Indianola cemetery.

Memorials may be given in her name.

Visitation will be Wednesday until 6 p.m and Thursday until 8 p.m. at the Carpenter Funeral Home in Indianola.

George Henry Millard

George Henry Millard died Tuesday (April 19, 2005) at Willow Ridge Retirement Community. He was 90 years old.

He was born June 5, 1914 at Somerville, New Jersey to Raymond D. and Jennie May (Amerman) Millard. He graduated from high school in Plainfield, NJ.

He served in the U.S. Army during WWII from 1943-1946.

On July 23, 1957 he married Viola S. Stritt who preceded him in death on April 24, 2002.

He lived in Denver Colorado from 1946 -2000 when he moved to McCook.

He was a member of St. Cahterine’s Catholic Church, the American Legion, Amateur Radio Relay League and Tri-State Amateur Radio Club. His hobbies included being an amateur radio operator, square dancing and bowling.

He was preceded in death by: his wife, Viola; his parents; two brothers, John & Russell.

Survivors include: a sister, Dorothy Vanarsdale of Philadelphia, PA; three brother-in-laws, Francis Broz of McCook, Henry Fossen of Indianola, Frankie Haag of Bartley; three sister-in-laws, Doris Millard of Fairfax, VT, Alyce Mae Stritt and Mary Ann Stritt both of Indianola; special nieces and nephews, Robert Stritt of McCook, Lola Underdown and husband Dave and Lois Christensen all of Aurora; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Rosary took place Friday at 7 p.m at the funeral home in McCook with Father Nicholas Baker officiating. Mass of Christian Burial was Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Indianola. Burial took place in St. Catherine’s cemetery.

Memorials were being accepted in his name.

Inez R. Sydow

Inez R. Sydow, 95, died Wednesday, May 18, 2005, at El Dorado Manor in Trenton.

Inez was born June 27, 1909, in Hamlet, to Peter and Rosa (Volkerts) Johnson.

She graduated from Trenton High School in 1929. She attended Kearney State Teacher’s College where she earned a teaching certificate through normal training. She taught school for a couple of years.

She married Robert F. Sydow on March 4, 1933 in McCook. To this union 3 children were born.

She enjoyed being a farmer’s wife and mother. Some of her favorite things were taking care of the garden and of course all of the animals. Reading western and pioneer books was her favorite past time. The KC Royals baseball team was her team to watch and listen to. She loved country western music but would also listen to gospel.

She was preceded in death by parents; her husband Robert F. Sydow in 1975; one sister Mable Holsclaw; great-grandson, Nathan; step-grandson, Terry; and special friend, Millie Fritch.

Survivors include three sons Victor Sydow of Colorado; David Sydow and wife, Doris, and Ralph Sydow and wife, Wanda, all of Trenton; Donna Sydow of Spokane, WA; sister-in-law Dortha Cleveland of Alliance; eight grandchildren and five step-grandchildren; four nieces and two nephews; and special friend, Darlene Woodraska of Trenton.

Memorials can be given in her name.

Funeral services will be at the graveside in the Trenton cemetery on Monday, May 23, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Fay Ann Blaylock officiating.

Burial will be in the Trenton cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday until 5:00 p.m., Saturday 9:00 a.m. until noon, and Sunday 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Janet (Lyon) Szuba

Janet Szuba of McCook died Sunday, March 20, 2005, at Great Plains Medical Center in North Platte. She was 73 years old.

Janet was born on September 24, 1931, in Tonawanda, New York, to Ira and Nellie (Heatherly) Lyon. She graduated from Tonawanda High School in 1951.

She married John Henrick Szuba in September of 1954, in Buffalo. To this union two children were born. They made their home in Buffalo where Janet’s husband was employed with Ford Motor Company and she was a homemaker. She was also employed as a bookkeeper for General Mills in the early 50’s. Her husband preceded her in death in 1988. She moved to the McCook community in 1993, to be in closer to her children.

She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. She enjoyed working in her vegetable and flower garden and crocheting and sewing.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, John; two brothers; and a sister in childhood.

Survivors include her son, Thomas Szuba of Larned, Kansas; daughter, Ann Marie Hopkins of New York, New York; sister, Lucille and husband, Alfred “Jack” Baker, of Clearwater, Florida; and grandchildren, Ilyana and Warren.

Memorials may be given in her name.

Rosary will be Wednesday, March 23, 2005, 6:00 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Chapel. A graveside service will be Thursday, March 24, 2005, 2:00 p.m. at Calvary cemetery with Father Gary Brethour officiating. A Mass will be celebrated at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in her honor at a later time. There will be no public visitation, the body was cremated. Friends may sign her book at the funeral home or go online at www.carpenterbreland.com to extend condolences.

Barbara J. (Vontz) Teel

Barb was born January 27, 1940 in Hastings, Nebraska to Raymond and Vera (Chenowith) Vontz. She grew up in Indianola and the surrounding area. She graduated from Indianola High School in 1958. She attended McCook Community College the following year.

She died Sunday, November 21, 2004 at her home in McCook.

On June 18, 1960, she married William L. Teel at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Indianola. To this union, five children were born.

Barb was always a hard worker. Her most recent employer was Burns Podiatric Laboratory in McCook, where she worked for twenty years until her health failed.

Barb was an avid fan for her family, especially her five children and thirteen grandchildren. She was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary and enjoyed bowling, golfing, camping, and an occasional visit to the casino.

She was preceded in death by her father, Raymond.

Survivors include her mother, Vera, of Holdrege; Bill Teel of Indianola; children Kim Herrman and husband Travis of Indianola; Mike Teel and wife Sandy of Indianola; Teresa Sander and husband Rocky of Benkelman; Pam Reichert and husband Richard of Benkelman; and Rick Teel and wife Ann of Indianola; sisters Jeanette Johnson and husband Mike of Holdrege; Darlene Sweeney and husband Mark of Holdrege; Diane Thee and husband Mark of Kearney; and Rita Meier of Grand Island; grandchildren Trisha and fiancée Dave, Chris, James, Brandon, Heather, Kyle, Nathan, Steven, Heath, Tanner, Zach, Tyrell and Sydney; numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Visitation will be Monday until 6 p.m. and Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. until time of Rosary. Friends and family may also leave condolences on-line at www.carpenterbreland.com

Rosary will be 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home in McCook. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Indianola with Father Nicholas Baker officiating. Burial will be in St. Catherine’s cemetery.

LaVonne L. (Marquette) Teply

LaVonne “Bonnie” L. Teply, 71, of Palisade died Thursday (April 14, 2005) at Community Hospital of McCook.

On October 15, 1933 she was born in Hershey to George and Celia M. (Bodell) Marquette. As a youth the family moved to Sarben where she graduated from the Paxton High School with the class of 1950.

She joined the Methodist church as a junior in high school and sang in the choir. She attended Wesleyan University in Lincoln and North Platte Business College, graduating in 1953. She was employed at the old Memorial Hospital in North Platte and later transferred to Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

She returned to North Platte in 1972 and was employed at the Game Commission as a bookkeper.

On May 31, 1974 she was united in marriage to Charles Teply at the Methodist Church in Paxton.

The couple farmed and ranched in Hayes County for 25 years and then retired to Palisade.

Preceding her in death were her father, George; her step-father of thirty years the late Leonard Lawyer; an infant sister, Wanda June; a nephew Randy Marquette and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Marquette.

She is survived by her husband, Charles Teply of Palisade; her mother, Celia Lawyer of North Platte; brothers, Gordon Marquette and wife Bonnie of Trenton and George Marquette and wife Joyce of Paxton; a step-brother Mike Lawyer and wife Michelle of Omaha; her aunt June Barnard of Denver and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be Tuesday, 11 a.m. at the Palisade United Methodist Church. Inurnment will be in the Sutherland cemetery.

Phyllis Pauline (Kotschwar) Traphagan

Phyllis Pauline (Kotschwar) Traphagan was born to Leo and Anastasia (Wasia) Kotschwar on March 21, 1938 in Dickens, Nebraska. Phyllis passed away on January 4, 2005 after a battle with cancer while residing at the Yuma Life Care Center in Yuma, Colorado. Phyllis was 66 years old.

Phyllis was raised in McCook, Nebraska and graduated from McCook High School in 1956. She married Robert Traphagan on June 15, 1957. Phyllis and Robert moved to San Fernando Valley in California where they lived for six years. This union was blessed with four children, in 1958 the twin sons, Patrick and Michael, in 1963 daughter, Mary was born. After Mary was born, Bob and Phyllis moved to Wheat Ridge, CO and in 1964, Tracy was born.

While raising the family, Phyllis worked as a bookkeeper for Valley Water District. In 1983, they moved to Eads, CO to pursue their dream of owning and operating their own small motel, grocery store and gas station. Phyllis and Bob divorced in 1987. Phyllis returned to Denver where she was a Medical Records Director at several nursing homes and rehabilitation centers in the Denver area. Phyllis retired in 2001.

Her family was her greatest joy, as well as music, ballet dancing, traveling, jewelry, good friends and laughter. Phyllis was a loving mother, grandmother, a caring sister and loyal friend.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Don Kotschwar and Vernon Kotschwar; five sisters, Shirley Slack, Thelma Duckworth, Alice Carlson, Ruth Vieth and Laurine Channel.

Phyllis is survived by twin sons, Pat Traphagan and wife, Cindy of Eckley, CO and Mike Traphagan of Garland, TX; daughters, Mary Traphagan of Denver, CO and Tracy DeDore of Los Gatos, CA; four grandchildren, Kevin Traphagan of Westminister, CO and Jessica, Austin and Tara Traphagan of Eckley, CO. Phyllis also leaves two brothers, Kent Kotschwar and wife, Phyllis of McCook and Stanley “Jiggs” Kotschwar and wife, Pat of Stratton, NE; two sisters, Laverna Ely and husband, Wayne and Jackie Boehm all of McCook; sister-in-law, Cecelia Kotschwar of McCook; brother-in-law, Bob Vieth of Grand Island, NE; as well as a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Phyllis will be missed by all.

Memorials may be given in her memory to the American Cancer Society.

Visitation will be Friday until time of rosary.

Rosary will be Friday, January 7, 2005, 7:00 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home in McCook. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, January 8, 2005, 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Father Gary Brethour officiating. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery in McCook.
