Rose Marie (Keen) Unger

Rose Marie Unger died Wednesday, April 19, 2006 at McCook Community Hospital. She was 95 years old.

Rose was born on February 25, 1911, at Kearney to William Frederick and Bertha Cedonia (Gartner) Keen. As a child Rose’s parents moved from Minden to McCook. She was baptized in April of 1937 by Pastor Wagner at the Lutheran Church northwest of Oberlin. She attended school at Perry.

On January 3, 1930, she married Jacob “Jake” A. Unger at North Platte. To this union five sons were born. She and Jake farmed most of their lives. They retired from the farm in 1972 and moved to Curtis for a short time. They later returned to McCook. Rose was living at Hillcrest Nursing Home at the time of her death.

She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church and Lutheran Ladies Missionary League. She enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening, sewing, knitting and cooking.

Preceding her in death were her parents, William and Bertha Keen; her husband, Jake on July 18, 1984; one daughter-in-law, Irma Unger; four sisters, Edith Robb, Julia Keen, Lulu Short and Anna Belle Stoddard; five brothers, John, George, Henry Ernest, Paul, and Robert Keen.

Survivors include her five sons, Dick A. Unger and wife, Imelda, of Indio, CA, Dale E. Unger of Ackworth, GA, Donald J. Unger and wife, Carol Jean, of St. Joseph, MO, Larry D. Unger and wife, Lola, of Tucson, AZ and Ernest R. “Fred” Unger and wife, Jeanne, of Midvale, UT; ten grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and family.

Memorials may be given in her name to the National Stroke Foundation or to givers own charity.

Visitation will be Friday until 5:00 p.m., Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until noon, Sunday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Monday morning until 10:00 a.m.

Funeral services will be Monday, April 24, 2006, 2:00 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Church with Pastor Randy Wahl officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery.

Alfred Henry Unger

Alfred Henry Unger died Saturday, August 13, 2005 at Chase County Community Hospital in Imperial, Nebraska at the age of 90 years and 4 days.

Alfred was born on August 9, 1915, in Red Willow County, Nebraska to Fred Frederick and Eva Margaretha “Emma” (Tilgner) Unger. He was baptized as an infant at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Ash Creek and was confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church in McCook. Alfred was educated at the St. John’s Church School and Red Willow County Country Schools. He received his high school education at Red Willow County High School.

On November 2, 1941, Alfred married Darlene Fern Orman at her mother’s beautiful home in Hayes County. They spent their first years on a farm in Red Willow County. In the spring of 1944, they moved back to Hayes County. In the spring of 1950, they moved to her parents’ farm where they remained the rest of his life. At this time he transferred his church membership to St. John’s White Lutheran Church where he was a member until it closed in 1976. He then transferred his membership to Trinity Lutheran Church in McCook where he remained a member. He held various leadership roles in the church throughout his entire life. His church and the education of his children were very important to him.

Alfred was a progressive farmer and cattleman. He also worked for the ASCS and was an adjuster and field man for Federal Crop Insurance Corporation for 25 years.

Preceding him in death were his parents; one granddaughter, Melanie Unger; five sisters, infant twins, Emma and Elizabeth, Clara Baumbach, Pauline Tauber, and Lydia Ackerman; and four brothers, Gus, Walter, Herman and Charley Unger.

Survivors include his wife, Darlene Unger of Hayes Center; four sons, Fred Unger and wife, Lea, of Hayes Center, Don Unger and wife, Karen, of Fort Collins, CO, Jack Unger and wife, Jerrilynne, of McKinney, TX, and Jerry Unger and wife, Beverly, of Hayes Center; one daughter, Nancy and husband, Bill Jennett, of Lincoln; 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Alma Ackerman of McCook and Loraine Groothius of Ogden, UT; five sisters-in-law, Frances Unger of McCook, Lillian Orman of Riverside, CA, Ruth Wagner of Ventura, CA, Lorraine Morosic of McCook and Juanita Orman of Santa Ana, CA; numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be given in his name to the St. John’s Lutheran Church (White), Trinity Lutheran Church (McCook), or Hayes County Ambulance Fund.

Funeral service will be Monday, August 15, 2005, 2:00 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, White, NE (rural Hayes County). Pastor Steven Neyhart will be officiating. Burial will be in the White cemetery.

Wallace A. Uphouse

Wallace A. Uphouse, 82, died Monday, October 24, 2005, at McCook Community Hospital.

He was born January 28, 1923 to Asher and Marie (Miell) Uphouse in Holyoke, Colorado.

Survivors include his wife, Ila of McCook and numerous nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will meet at Stage C for services. Graveside services will be at Ft. Logan National cemetery in Denver with full military honors.

Andrew Dean VanCura

Andrew Dean “Andy” VanCura died Friday, December 23, 2005, at his rural home near Hayes Center. He was 40 years old.

Andy was born on March 25, 1965, at Ogallala, to Delmar Dean and Charlette Ann (Hood) VanCura. He attended school in Madrid and received his GED in 1996.

On March 21, 2004, he married Misty Dawn Brannin in Hayes Center. Andy was a miner for Garrett Sand and Gravel. In his free time he enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Preceding him in death were his son, James Dean VanCura; and grandparents, Lewis and Lola Ramsey.

Survivors include his wife, Misty VanCura, of Hayes Center; one daughter, Laura VanCura of McCook; two sons, Larry VanCura, presently serving in Iraq and Lucas VanCura of the home; parents, Delmar and Dee VanCura and Charlette and Ralph Casey, Jr. all of Ogallala; two brothers, Daniel VanCura and wife, Pearl, of Hayes Center and Ralph Casey, III of Ogallala; and four sisters, Andrea and husband, Clyde Reimers, of Lexington, Darla Casey and fiancé, Terry Walkenhorst, of North Platte, Leanne Hood and fiancé, Mike Heble, of Ogallala and Lori and husband, Pat Watts, of Ogallala.

Memorials may be given in his name.

Visitation will be Tuesday, until 8:00 p.m. at Carpenter Breland.

Funeral service will be Wednesday, December 28, 2005, 10:30 a.m. at the Palisade United Methodist Church with Rev. Judy Dye and Rev. Fay Ann Blaylock officiating. Cremation will follow the service and a private family inurnment will be held at a later time in the Wallace cemetery.

Frances E. (Foley) Waddell

Frances E. Waddell, 82, died Tuesday, January 31, 2006 at Hillcrest Nursing Home.

She was born to Margaret (Lang) and Francis B. Foley in Frontier County on May 14, 1923. She attended rural schools and graduated from Havana High School. She attended McCook Junior College, Kearney State College, and Denver University.

She married James S. Waddell in Indianola, on June 4, 1947. To this union three children were born. She taught school in this area for 13 years.

She was a member of the St. Catherine’s Altar Society and held an office for many years. She was also a member of the Red Willow Extension Club, Indianola Federated Ladies Club, 4-H leader, China Painter’s Club, Good Sam’s Club and the Family Frolic Square Dance Club.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Margaret and Francis; one sister, Marge Thornton; and son-in-law, Kent Guthrie.

Survivors include husband, James; two sons, James and wife Karen Waddell of Indianola, Robert and wife Lisa Waddell of Omaha; one daughter, Jeralyn ”Jeri” Guthrie of Arvada, Colo; five grandchildren, Erik and Kendra Guthrie, and Veronica, Dakota and Samuel Waddell; and two great grandchildren, Kyra and Lucas Guthrie. She and Jim took care of and provided a home for several years for niece Theresa Shiers of McCook and nephew, David Smuskiewicz of Kearney.

Memorials can be given in her name.

Funeral services will be Saturday, February 4, 2006, 10:00 a.m. at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church with Father Paul Witt as Celebrant. Burial will be in St. Catherine’s cemetery. Rosary will be Friday, February 3, 2006, at Carpenter Breland Chapel at 7:00 p.m.

Visitation will be Thursday 9 a.m.-8 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m.

Mary C. Sanders Jaques (Beeler) Walker

Mary C. Sanders Jaques Walker, 76, died Tuesday, September 7, 2004 at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook.

Mary was born on March 22, 1928, on a farm near Denton, Texas to John Clay and Mamie Ellen (Karre) Beeler. She attended rural Mayhill Elementary School and graduated from North Texas State High School in 1944.

On March 21, 1945 she married Alfred Henry Sanders. To this union three children were born. He died in November of 1961, leaving Mary with three young children. She later married Steven Jaques in McCook. She became a step-mother to two more sons. Mary was a homemaker and active Boy Scout Leader. She also helped her husband by driving a semi for their livestock trucking service. After they closed their trucking business, Mary worked for Stickney’s as a clerk for several years. For the past 18 years she was a sales associate for Wal-Mart until her health forced her to retire.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her two husbands, Alfred and Steven; and one sister, Christine.

Survivors include her children, Janice and husband, Jim McGinness, of Plymouth, Betty and husband, Jim Barker, of Gering and Michael Sanders and wife, Marla, of McCook; step-sons, Steve Jaques and wife, Chris and Brad Jaques all of Grant; three sisters, Betty Lou Gaddy of Denton, TX, Martha Oulette of Sanger, TX and Ruth and husband, James Bryan, of Lewisville, TX; 10 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Saturday, September 11th, 10:00 a.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Chapel with Pastor John Strecker-Baseler officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery.

Memorials are being accepted in her name.

Visitation will be at the Carpenter Breland Funeral Home Thursday and Friday 9-8 p.m.

Lawrence William Walker

Lawrence William Walker died Saturday, September 25, 2004 at his rural Hayes Center home. He was 89 years old.

Lawrence was born on July 11, 1915, at Maywood, Nebraska to Charlie and Mary Catherine (Teeters) Walker. He attended rural District 54.

On August 16, 1936, he married Effie Laura Evans on the Evans family farm in Hayes County. To this union three children were born. They made their home on a farm East of Hayes Center for most of their 68 years of married life.

Lawrence was a member of Evergreen Union Church. He served on the school board, fair board and Farm Bureau Board. He was a 4-H Leader and sponsored several youth sneak trips. He enjoyed farming, traveling and most of all his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Mary Catherine; daughter-in-law, Linda Ann Rummel Walker; and great-granddaughter, Kayla Marie Walker.

Survivors include his wife, Laura of Hayes Center; two sons, Charles H. Walker and wife, Sara Mae, and Cletis L. Walker all of McCook; daughter, Marjory L. and husband, Raymond Floyd, of Cheyenne, WY; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given in his name and left at the funeral home.

Funeral service will be Wednesday, September 29, 2004, 11:00 a.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home in McCook. Johnny Walker will be officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery.

Visitation will be Tuesday 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Elda M. (Cheney) Walker

Elda M. Walker, 80, died Wednesday, (August 11, 2004) at Community Hospital in McCook.

She was born in Frontier County on December 9, 1923 to Alfred C. and Effie Marie (Blake) Cheney. She graduated from Indianola High School.

She married Benjamin F. Walker in Denver on July 1, 1946. She had lived in McCook since 1943 and had worked as a pharmacy clerk.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband on April 13, 1999 and one brother, Bernard.

Survivors include: two sons, Ben Walker of Lincoln and Larry Walker and wife Kathy of Gering; three brothers, Merald Cheney and wife Dot of Lincoln, Don Cheney and wife Maxine of Bennett and Bob Cheney and wife Melba of Lincoln; a sister, Lois Hamilton of McCook; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home with Pastor Clark Bates officiating. Burial will be Monday, 10:00 a.m. at Fort McPherson National cemetery at Maxwell.

Visitation will be today until 8:00 p.m.

Memorials are being accepted in her name.

Emma Marie (Pollman) Walker

Emma Marie Walker, 96, died Monday, September 6, 2004 at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook.

Emma was born October 15, 1907 to Henry and Anna (Volerth) Pollmann at Culbertson. She attended rural school near Culbertson.

On January 12, 1929 she married Martin Walker in McCook. They lived and farmed in the Prairie Union Community from 1929-1956 at which time they moved to their farm home north of Beverly and lived there until 1982. When Martin died in 1982 she moved to Palisade. She became a resident of the Hidden Pines Assisted Living in McCook in 2000 and for the last two years was a resident of Hillcrest Nursing Home.

She was a member of the Palisade United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, Friendly Neighbor Club, Beverly Ladies Aide and the Order of the Eastern Star.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Martin; four brothers, Earl, Walter, John and Henry; and two sisters, Anna and Minnie.

Survivors include: a son, Richard Walker and wife Doris of Golden, CO.; a daughter, Barbara Cumpston and husband Donald of Weeping Water; three sisters, Christina Relph, Hanna Hine and Louise Coburn all of McCook; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the Palisade United Methodist Church and the Masonic Eastern Star Home for Children at Fremont.

Funeral services will be Friday 10 a.m. at the Palisade United Methodist Church with Pastor Judy Dye officiating. Burial will be in the Palisade cemetery.

Visitation will be at the Carpenter Breland Funeral Home Wednesday 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Thursday 9 a.m. – 8 p.m.
