Donald O. Wallen

Donald (Don) O. Wallen, 77, died Friday, July 8, 2005 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Don was born on June 9, 1928 in McCook to Lynn A. and Alice M. (Confer) Wallen. He graduated from McCook High School in 1946 and from McCook Junior College in 1948.

Don married Shirley Muffley on June 12, 1949 at the Memorial United Methodist Church in McCook. They had three children, Marcia, Janet and Craig.

Don, who lived all his life in the area, farmed wheat, corn, milo, hay, and beets, and raised Longhorn cattle on his farm southwest of town. He was a strong advocate of minimum tillage, having worked many years promoting the concept. For a period time, he was also involved in farm machinery sales.

Don was a member of the Memorial United Methodist Church, the Elks Club, the Stone Church Association, the Nebraska Wheat Growers Association and was a past-officer with the county and state Wheat Growers. He also held positions on the County Extension Board, Election Board, County Weed Board, School District 16 Board, and was an area representative for the Beet Growers Association.

Don loved to read, travel, and experience new things. He was very involved with his children and grandchildren. Don was an avid follower of their activities and sporting events and they could always count on him for a game of checkers, dominoes, or blackjack.

Don was preceded in death by his parents Lynn and Alice Wallen, his father and mother in law, Robert and Francis Muffley, and his sister in law, Anne Muffley.

Survivors include: his wife Shirley of McCook; son Craig Wallen and wife Linda of McCook; two daughters, Marcia Wallen and husband Peter Fisher of Rancho Santa Fe, California and Janet Wallen Rabinowitz and husband Fredric of Redlands, California; brother Robert Wallen and wife Carollee of McCook; sister, Donna Carmichael and husband Hoagy (Lamoine) of Sun City West, Arizona; brother in law, Gary Muffley of Ashville, North Carolina; six grandchildren, Shane and Travis Wallen, Milia and Michaela Fisher and Karina and Jared Rabinowitz; and special family Arabella and husband Steve Tattershall and children Gray and Effie Tattershall of Lafayette, Colorado.

Donations may be sent to the Memorial United Methodist Church, the Stone Church or the American Kidney Foundation.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, 10:30 a.m. at Memorial United Methodist Church. The Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Thurman will officiate the service. Burial will follow at Memorial Park cemetery.

Visitation will be today until 8 p.m. at the Carpenter Breland Funeral Home, which will be in charge of the arrangements.

Walter R. Warburton

Walter R. “Pinky” Warburton, 71, died Sunday, December 19, 2004 at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook.

On August 22, 1933, he was born to Fred Alton and Goldie Mae (Larreau) Warburton at Oberlin, Kansas. He attended McCook Public Schools. He served in the National Guard for a number of years.

He married Thelma Meissner in Oberlin, Kansas on March 14, 1953. To this union five children were born. They lived in the McCook community all their married life.

Pinky worked for J.D. Messer Roofing and 7-Up Bottling Company from 1959-1974. In 1974, he was employed by Dayco as an air-water charger. He retired in 1999 after 24 1/2 years of dedicated service.

He enjoyed fishing, hand held games, puzzles and a coin and pen collection.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife Thelma on Nov. 6, 2000; an infant daughter, Elaine Marie; and one brother Claude “Rocky” Warburton.

Survivors include his son, Galen Warburton and wife, Dorothea, of McCook; three daughters, Glenda Critchfield of McCook, Laura and husband, Doug Callihan, of Abilene, KS and Jeanne Rodarmel of McCook; one brother, Robert “Red” Warburton of Gering; sister, Pauline “Polly” Childs of Crete; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and faithful friend, Taco, his dog.

Memorials may be given in his name.

Visitation will be Tuesday, 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday 9:00 a.m. until time of service.

Funeral service will be Wednesday, December 22, 2004, 2:00 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home with Jerry Beckenhauer officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery.

Marion Gardner Warner

Marion Gardner Warner, 53 of Lebanon died Saturday, September 11, 2004 at University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

He was born May 11, 1951 to Harry Dean and Betty Hope (Ward) Warner in McCook. He graduated from McCook High School in 1969.

On June 20, 2003 he married Bonnie Anne Perkins in McCook.

Marion lived most of his life in Lebanon. He had worked for Volz Pluming since 1970.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He was a member of McCook Lodge No. 135 and was a member of all the York Rite Bodies of McCook, Valley of Omaha Scottish Rite, Red Cross of Constantine, Knight York Cross of Honor, and Eureka Chapter No. 16, Order of the Eastern Star at McCook.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Survivors include: his wife Bonnie of Lebanon; his mother, Betty Warner of Lebanon; two step-sons, Bill Flynn and wife Katie of Tonganoxie, KS, Colin Flynn and wife Kerri of Hermann, MO; a sister, Margaret Goodenberger and husband Ray of Hershey; and two step-grandchildren.

Memorials are being accepted in his name.

Memorial services will be Saturday, 10 a.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Chapel in McCook with Roy Hart officiating. Inurnment will be in the Lebanon cemetery with a Masonic service.

Friends may sign his book at the funeral home 9 a.m.- 5 p.m. through Friday or go online at www.carpetnerbreland.com to extend condolences.

Francis E. Weiland

Francis “Frannie” E. Weiland, 79, died Monday (August 1, 2005) at the Premier Estates Senior Living Center in North Platte.

Francis was born in McCook September 5, 1925 to Francis N. and Marion E. (Kling) Weiland. He was a member of the McCook High School class of 1945. He lived all his life in McCook until moving to North Platte in 1999.

He was self employed and owned his Window Cleaning Service. For many years following World War II, Frannie was probably McCook’s most visible citizen, as he worked in downtown McCook. He was a familiar sight as he pulled his red wagon, filled with window washing equipment, along Norris Avenue. He never met a stranger and spoke to everyone he met. He was an unofficial greeter to out-of-town shoppers and certainly made everyone feel welcome. Another of his jobs was putting up the flags on the light poles on Norris Avenue for holidays.

He was a member of the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and the Kiwanis Club.

Preceding him in death were his parents;

Survivors include his brother, Retired Col. Joe K. Weiland and wife Dee of Fort Worth; a sister, Marion of North Platte; nephews Tim & Ted Weiland, Mike and wife Mary Keith, Allen and wife Ann Keith, Larry Keith, Douglas and wife Sharon Keith; a niece Kathy Shimmin; and numerous great nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be given to the McCook Knights of Columbus or the McCook Kiwanis Club.

Graveside services will be Wednesday morning at 10:00 at Calvary cemetery with Father Gary Brethour officiating.

Visitation will be Tuesday until 8 p.m. at the funeral home. (Please use the south door entrance on “C” Street.) Friends and family may also go online at www.carpenterbreland.com to extend condolences.

Josephine Almira (McMains) Wesch

Josephine Almira Wesch died Tuesday, February 8, 2005 at Hillcrest Nursing Home. She was 90 years old.

Josephine was born on October 28, 1914, in Frontier County, Nebraska, to Burtis Lloyd and Minnie Mary (Jewel) McMains. She attended Center Pointe School and received her GED from McCook Community College in 1978.

On June 28, 1939, she married Edward R. Wesch at Oberlin. To this union two sons were born. They made their home in McCook. Josephine was employed in retail management for Montgomery Ward and Gambles.

She was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church, Hospital Auxiliary, Professional Women’s Club and Garden Prairie Home Extension Club.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Burtis and Minnie McMains; and her husband, Edward Wesch.

Survivors include her two sons, Jerry E. Wesch of Chicago, IL and Roland L. Wesch and wife, Sue, of McCook; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given in her name.

Visitation will be Thursday, 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and Friday 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Funeral service will be Saturday, February 12, 2005, 10:30 a.m., at Carpenter Breland Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Jeff Thurman officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery.

Vernice Mary Weskamp

Vernice Mary Weskamp, 95, died Friday, December 17, 2004 at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook.

She was born July 23, 1909 to Henry Joseph and Mabel (Williams) Weskamp at Indianola. She graduated from Danbury High School in 1927 and lived in this area all her life.

She taught in several rural schools in the area and at St. Patrick’s Grade School. She loved gardening, embroidery and working cross word puzzles.

She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and Altar Society.

Preceding her in death were parents; and a brother Elmer J. Weskamp.

Survivors include two sisters, Dorothy Graff and husband Martin and Elsie Sullivan all of McCook; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials are being accepted in her name or may be given the Alzheimer’s Association.

Rosary will be Monday, 7 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home in McCook.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday 10 a.m. at St. Pat’s Catholic Church in McCook with Father Gary Brethour officiating. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery.

Visitation will be Monday 9 a.m. until time of the Rosary. Friends may also go online at www.carpenterbreland.com to extend condolences.

Otto Paul Weskamp

Otto Paul Weskamp of McCook died Monday (March 1, 2004) at his home south of McCook. He was 92 years old.

He was born June 22, 1911 to Joseph H. and Marie (Karthauser) Weskamp at McCook. He attended rural school near Marion and lived in the McCook area all his life.

On February 24, 1936 he married Virginia Rose Harris at McCook. They farmed south of McCook. He enjoyed cards and dancing.

He was a member of St. Patricks Catholic Church and McCook Elks Lodge # 1434.

Preceding him in death were his parents; wife Virginia, July 29, 1992; and one brother, Vernon.

Survivors include: a son, Lynn of McCook; a daughter, Shirley Nisley and husband James of North Platte; two grandchildren, Daniel Nisley and wife Shauna of North Platte and Kelli Arbogast and husband Jonathan of Norfolk, VA; and two great-grandchildren, Jonathan and Autumn Rose Arbogast.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Patricks Catholic Church with Father Gary Brethour officiating. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery.

Rosary will be Friday evening at 6 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Chapel.

Memorials are being accepted in his name.

Madge Charlene (Lewis) Whiteman

Madge Charlene Whiteman was born Oct 9, 1916 in McCook, Nebraska. She was taken into her Lord Jesus' loving arms on Thursday, April 21, 2005 at her home in McCook.

She was preceded in death by her parents, W.W. and Charlotte Lewis; her loving husband of 50 years, Claude; two brothers, Lyle and Jack.

Surviviors include: her sister, Kathleen Rauber; a son, Gary; a grandson, Eric; and
great-grandchildren Jesse, Nikolas, and Jazlyn.

In Lieu of flowers and food the family is requesting memorials to McCook Humane Society.

A memorial services will be Monday (April 21, 2005) at 10 a.m. at St. Albans Episcopal Church with Rev. Sam Williams officiating.
