Fern I. (Wilsey) Wolgamott

Fern I. Wolgamott, 91, died Sunday, February 13, 2005 at Sunset Haven Nursing Home in Curtis.

She was born May 2, 1913 in Gosper County to Leon J. and Lela O. (Collins) Wilsey.
She attended school at Lexington. She moved to McCook in 1995.

She married Wayne O. Wolgamott in the Methodist Church in Lexington on December 24, 1929.

She was a swimming pool manager, a security guard at the Tech College in Curtis, a Volunteer EMT and Ambulance Driver for a number of years and she was a Boy Scout Leader. She always said “there are no bad kids, just neglected ones”. She received the Aksarben Good Neighbor Award.

She belonged to the Rebekah Lodge for 64 years and a member of the BPO Does.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1987; a daughter, Norma Yeager; three brothers, Fred, Justus and Harold Wilsey; two sisters, Lena Payne and Thelma Goucher.

Survivors include: two sons, Ray Wolgamott of Imperial and Roy Wolgamott and wife Carolyn of Lincoln; two daughters, Ardis Ruppert of Curtis and Phyllis Ogg and husband Gerald of McCook; a son-in-law, Harold Yeager of McCook; a brother, Leon Wilsey of Grand Island; four sisters, Lou Smith of Fort Dodge, IA, Naomi June Westbrook of North Platte, Beverly Meyers and husband Gene of Minden and LaDena Beins and husband Wayne of Spanish Fork, UT.; a brother-in-law, Lloyd Wolgamott and wife Hilda of Curtis; a sister-in-law Laura Bell Faucet and husband Bill of Pendelton, OR.; 19 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren and 21 great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials are being accepted in her name.

Funeral services will be Saturday, February 19, 2005 at 10 a.m. at McCook Christian Church with Pastor Clark Bates officiating. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. in the Curtis cemetery.

Visitation will be Monday – Friday during 9 a.m.- 5 p.m. Friday evening will be private family visitation.

Joseph D. Wood, Jr.

Joseph D. “Dal” Wood, Jr. died Sunday, November 6, 2005 at his home in McCook. He was 75 years old.

He was born July 9, 1930 in McCook to Joseph D. and Pearl (Lawritsen) Wood. He was a graduate of McCook High School in 1948, McCook Junior College in 1950 and the University Of Nebraska College Of Law in 1954.

He served in the Nebraska National Guard, the Nebraska Air Guard and was activated and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.

On February 21, 1955 he married Bernadine Sulzman in McCook. To this union five children were born.

Dal practiced law in McCook and was a member of the Nebraska State Bar Association, serving in the House of Delegates for 27 years. He also was Red Willow County Attorney from 1958 to 1972.

He was a member of the First Congregational Church, the Congregational Church Foundation, the McCook Lions Club, Elks and McCook Masonic Lodge #135. He served on the city of McCook Civil Service Commission from it’s beginning until his death. He was also a long time member of the McCook College Foundation.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife Bernadine of McCook; children, Mary Wood of Manhattan, Kans., Matthew Wood and wife Krystal of Cheyenne, Wyo., Paul Wood and wife Linda of McCook, Virginia “Ginger” Stewart and husband Christopher of Tyler, Tex. And Susan Bartek and husband Larry of Omaha; 12 Grandchildren, Retha and Sara Wood, Elise Polly, Joseph and Jennifer Wood, Joshua and Allison Hofer, Emily and Erica Wood, Kyle, Spencer and Sydney Stewart; and a great granddaughter, McKenzie.

Memorials may be given to the First Congregational Church.

Services will be Friday 11 a.m. at First Congregational Church with Rev. Jerry Lawritsen, Rev. Steve King and Father Gary Brethour officiating. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery.

Visitation will be Wednesday 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and Thursday, 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friends may go online to extend condolences at www.carpenterbreland.com.

Vernon A. Wortman

Vernon A. Wortman of McCook died Thursday (March 9, 2006) at McCook Community Hospital. He was 73 years old.

He was born March 20, 1932 at Tekamah to Albert John and Margaret Lorraine (Young) Wortman. He grew up on a farm near Walthill and graduated from Walthill High School in 1949. He attended and played football at Wayne State College and graduated from the University of Nebraska.

He served as a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force from 1953 -1957. He flew jet fighters. He served in the USAF Reserves until 1967.

He married Betty E. Dye at Rosalie on June 12, 1954. To this union two sons, Mike and Curt and daughter, Denise were born. Vernon has lived in McCook since 1971. He worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in the Soil Conservation Service from 1959 until his retirement in 1987.

He was an active member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church. Vernon was also a member of the American Legion Post 203, VFW Post 1952, NARFE, the Masonic Lodge # 135 and Shrine, the Elks and the Valley Hope Advisory Board in Norton, KS. He was an avid golfer, involved in numerous organizations. He had a love for flying and enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents.

Survivors include: his wife Betty of McCook; two sons, Mike and wife Deb of Wichita, KS. And Curt of Ogalalla; a daughter Denise and husband Joe Yauney of Mitchell; six grandchildren, Michael, Jon, Rachel, Shelley, Stacy and Trent; two step grandchildren, Jondell and Jeremy; 14 great-grandchildren; four brothers, Gerald and wife Joanne of Tekamah, Lawrence of Walthill, Delmar and wife Glenna of Rosalie, and Don and wife Eleanor of Hunnington Beach, CA; numerous other relatives and friends.

Memorials are being accepted in his name.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in McCook with Pastor John Strecker-Baseler officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery.

Visitation at the funeral home will be Friday from 9 a.m.- 8 p.m. The family will be present to meet friends from 6-8 p.m. Friends and family may also leave condolences on-line at www.carpenterbreland.com

Vera Mae (Jones) Miller

Vera Mae (Jones) Miller, 92, was born May 14, 1912 at Lebanon to Leslie Franklin and Mary Atillia (Bush) Jones. She departed this world on February 8, 2005 at the age of 92 in Cambridge, Nebraska.

She was married in Oberlin, Kansas to Eugene V. Miller on March 18, 1934. She was owner/operator of Circle M Ceramics.

Vera was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene, on June 27, 1971; her parents, Leslie and Mary Jones; a brother, Harold Jones; and a great-grandson, James Burton.

Survivors include two daughters, Enid Ruckman of Brownwood, Texas and Barbara Anderson and husband, Allan, of McCook; six grandchildren Aleah and Brian Geiger, Jerry E. Hilsinger, Jana and John Boutwell, Darrell Hilsinger and CJ Jeffers, Kirby and Laura Anderson, Valerie and Mike Kircher; 16 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren; a nephew Gerald Jones and wife Janice of Woodland Hills, CA.

In lieu of flowers memorials were to be given to the Cambridge Manor.

Graveside services were Friday, February 11, 2005, 2:00 p.m. at Memorial Park cemetery in McCook with Father Robert Barnhill officiating.

Alvina M. Becker (Loran) Wyrick

Alvina M. Becker Wyrick, 82, died Tuesday morning (October 25, 2005) at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney following a battle with heart failure.

She was born August 7, 1923 in Mandan, North Dakota, the eldest of three children. A strong believer in education, she went to work as a secretary immediately after high school and worked to put her brother and sister through college, although she gave up that opportunity for herself. On April 4, 1953 she married Robert Becker, and for the next 17 years traded her typewriter for diapers. They raised eight children. When friends would repeatedly comment on her positive and upbeat attitude, she would respond by saying that was what got her through tough times. When Bob became ill, she worked as a secretary at the Red Willow County Extension office for several years before acquiring her real estate license and eventually opening her own office. She loved the challenge of real estate and enjoyed the variety of people it brought into her acquaintance. After Bob’s death in 1985, she became even more involved in real estate and owned the McCook Century 21 office until her retirement in 2000.

On July 3, 1999 Alvina married Harlan Wyrick. They enjoyed travel and were blessed with six years together. Alvina played a mean game of bridge, worked the Sunday crossword puzzle in ink, and had gotten to be pretty darned good on her computer. She was a gracious and giving person who recognized need and responded to it generously with time and resources.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Nicholas Thomas and Rose Mary (Schantz) Loran; a brother, Tom and a sister, Rita.

Alvina is survived by her husband, Harlan, of Kearney; eight children: Deborah (David) Hansen of Orchard, NE; Carl (Marie) of Boise, ID; Linda (Scott) Rasmussen of Flower Mound, TX; John, of Scottsdale, AZ; Robert (Marcela) of Tucson, AZ; Daniel (Nancy) of Broomfield, CO; James, of Des Moines, IA; Mary Eddy, of Pittsburg, TX; and fifteen grandchildren.

Rosary will be at 6 p.m. Thursday and funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Friday morning at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Father Gary Brethour officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary cemetery.

Public visitation will be Thursday afternoon from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home.

Robert “Bob” D. Zlomke

Robert “Bob” D. Zlomke, 54 of McCook died Thursday, September 9, 2004 at Great Plains Regional Medical Center

Robert was born January 9, 1950 to Dean Harold and Dorothy Evangeline (Goodwin) Zlomke in Grand Island. He grew up in Grand Island and graduated from Grand Island Central Catholic High School in 1968. He also attended Kearney State College.

He moved to Estes Park, CO where he owned a music store. He moved to McCook in 1979. On October 29, 1983 he married Bonnie Riley in McCook.

He owned and operated McCook Vac & Sew for nearly 20 years. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles and helped with the Boy Scouts. He loved fishing, camping, playing the guitar and playing cards.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Richard.

Survivors include his wife Bonnie of McCook; and two brothers, John Zlomke and wife Peggy of McCook and Dean Zlomke and wife Tammy of Baltimore, MD.; mother and father-in-law, Charles and Vivian Riley of McCook; two brother-in-laws, Bob Riley and wife Geraldine of Orlando, FL and Chris Riley and wife Janet of Indianola; three nephews, Justin, Jordan and James Zlomke; aunts and uncles; and many good friends.

Memorials are being accepted in his name.

Memorial services will be Monday, 10 a.m at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home in McCook with Jerry Beckenhauer officiating. There will be a private family inurnment at a later time.

Virginia Lavonne (Mitchem) Moore

Virginia “Ginny” Lavonne (Mitchem) Moore died Wednesday, January 19, 2005 at her sister’s home in Lincoln. She was 64 years old.

Ginny was born on April 22, 1940, at McCook to Dale Jess and Fern Elizabeth (Worske) Mitchem. She was the second born of ten children. She attended McCook Public Schools. She moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin and was employed as a nurse’s aid at a hospital.

She became the mother of two children, one girl Elizabeth and one boy, Jess. In later years she moved to Kenosha, Illinois. She married Robert Moore, Sr. and to this union one son, Robert, Jr. was born. She was a member of the Assembly of God where her faith led her to ministry wherever Jesus led her.

Ginny enjoyed flowers, reading the bible and most of all spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Dale and Fern Mitchem and infant sister, Viretta.

Survivors include her children, Elizabeth Mitchem of Kenosha; two sons, Jess Roberts and wife, Lauri, of Austin, TX and Robert Moore, Jr. and wife, Liz, of Kenosha; brothers, Dale Mitchem and wife, Jane, of McCook, Larry Mitchem and Robert Mitchem both of Indianola, Mike Mitchem and wife, Julie, of Lincoln; sisters, Sandy Bolejack of Lincoln, Linda Mitchem of Holbrook, Erma Mitchem of Lincoln and Laura and husband, Mark Klute of Lincoln; four grandchildren, Christopher Mitchem, Noah Roberts, Victoria Moore and Ivy Roberts.

Memorials were to be given in her name.

Funeral services were Saturday, January 22, 2005, 11:00 a.m. at First Assembly of God Church with Pastor Charles Hooton officiating. Burial took place in Memorial Park cemetery.

Carol Ann (Norris) Moorhous

Carol Ann Moorhous, 69, died Thursday, February 2, 2006 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lincoln.

Carol was born on May 25, 1936, to Rex Clifton and Evelyn Pearl (Harbaugh) Norris in McCook. She graduated from McCook High School in 1954.

On July 16, 1961, she married Keith Moorhous at McCook. To this union three children were born. They made their home in Culbertson where Carol was a homemaker. Carol was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. She enjoyed watching television, Nebraska football and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents and one sister, Lana Jean Morgan.

Survivors include her husband, Keith of Culbertson; one daughter, Kathy S. and husband, Robert Homolka, of Swanton; two sons, Jeffrey M. Moorhous and wife, Deb, of Culbertson and Randolph G. Moorhous and wife, Jody, of Sparks, NV; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.

Memorials were to be given in her name to the American Heart Association or American Diabetes Association.

Funeral services were Tuesday, February 7, 2006, 11:00 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Culbertson, with Pastor Brad Rick officiating. Burial took place in the Culbertson cemetery.

Patricia (Davidson) Moreau

Patricia ‘Patsy’ Moreau, 63, died Friday September 30, 2005 at Kindred Hospital in Denver, Colorado after a lifelong battle with lung disease. She was born June 4th, 1942 in Minden Nebraska to Elmer L. and Dorothy I. (Heinrich) Davidson.

She graduated from Minden High School in 1960 and completed one year at Kearney State Teacher’s College. On July 2, 1961 she married Roger Moreau of Upland Nebraska. The couple lived in Denver, Minden, Holdrege, and moved to McCook in 1974. She was a secretary at Northward Elementary school for 18 years until her retirement in 2000. Patsy was a member of the Memorial United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her father and infant brother. Survivors include her husband Roger of McCook, mother Dorothy and sister Donna Dyke both of Minden; son Brian Moreau, wife Beth, and children Kathryn, Alex, and Emily of Castle Rock, Colorado; Daughter Janice and husband Pat Howell and children Amber and Kiel of Pender, Nebraska; Son James Moreau, wife Andrea and child Ali of Holdrege, Nebraska; Daughter Brenda and husband Bryan Buechter and children Bryce, Breanna, and Brady of Ceresco, Nebraska.

She enjoyed genealogical research, traveling, and time spent at their lake cabin. Patsy loved her husband, family and friends, and she loved life.

Memorials are to be given in her name.

Funeral services were Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2:00 p.m. at Memorial United Methodist Church in McCook with the Rev. Dr. Jeff Thurman officiating.
