David Franklin Moreau

David Franklin Moreau died Sunday, July 18, 2004 in McCook. He was 53 years old.

David was born on August 26, 1950, to Ivan C. and Ruth R. (Matson) Moreau in McCook. He graduated from McCook High School in 1970.

Preceding him in death were his father, Ivan, and one brother-in-law, David Herron.

Survivors include his two sons, Christopher Moreau of Culbertson and Billy Moreau and wife, Kim, of Maywood; his mother, Ruth Moreau of McCook; special friend, Vicki Drake of McCook; two brothers, Johnnie Moreau of Edison and Roger Moreau and wife, Patsy, of McCook; and five sisters, Larea Cameron of CO., Rose Ann and husband, Richard Wright, of Capitan, NM, Rebecca Herron of Lincoln, Cathleen Blanton and Colleen McVicker and husband, Mel, all of Palisade.

Funeral services were at Carpenter Breland Chapel on Friday, July 23, 2004, 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Richard Karr officiating. Burial took place in Memorial Park cemetery.

Memorials were to be given in his name.

Thomas Patrick Murphy, D.V.M

St. James, MN – Dr. Thomas P. Murphy, 78, of St. James died Wednesday, June 16th at Immanuel-St. Joseph Hospital in Mankato, Minnesota.

Thomas Patrick Murphy, the son of Thomas Henry and Julia Catherine (Scott) Murphy, was born November 13, 1925 in Greeley, NE where he spent his youth and graduated from Greeley Catholic High School.

He entered the United States Army February 2, 1944. Following his honorable discharge March 14, 1946, Tom moved to Fort Collins, CO where he attended Colorado State University, studying veterinary medicine.

He worked as a veterinarian in McCook, NE for seventeen years. Tom married Leora (Norman) Confer June 17, 1969. He adopted Leora’s three children April 14, 1970. They moved to Dubuque, IA in 1972 where he worked as USDA Inspector at Dubuque Meats. They moved to St. James, MN in 1976 where he was the Plant and Health Inspector for Butterfield Foods, retiring in 1987.

He was a member of St. James Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, 3rd and 4th degrees. Tom and Leora enjoyed square and round dancing, and he enjoyed time spent with his grandsons, nieces and nephews.

Survivors include his wife, Leora of St. James, MN; daughters, Monica Fischer and her husband Kevin of Butterfield, MN, Dorinda Wehde and her husband Tim of St. James, MN; three grandsons, Jason and Aaron Fischer and Kilian Wehde; brothers, Gerald Murphy and his wife Phyllis of Greeley, CO, Richard Murphy of Niobrara, NE; sister-in-law, Bonnie Murphy of Waverly, NE; nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by a son Dirk Murphy; brothers, James, John and Raymond Murphy; and sister, Kathryn Beyer.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 21, 2004 at St. James Catholic Church in St. James, MN. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday and 8 to 10 a.m. Monday at Pease Funeral Home in St. James with a parish prayer service scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Visitation in McCook will be Wednesday morning 8:30 – 10:30 at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home in McCook. Graveside services will follow at 11:00 a.m. at Calvary cemetery with Father Gary Brethour officiating.

William Edward Nelson Jr.

William “Bill” Edward Nelson, Jr., 71, was called from this life on January 20, 2006, while surrounded by family. He lost a four year battle with cancer.

Bill was born December 7, 1934 to William and Ruby (Schmidt) Nelson on the family farm west of Bartley. At age 8, the family moved to the present day Nelson farm north of Bartley. Bill never lived more than two miles from where he was born.

At an early age, Bill learned the trade of welding. His first welder sat beneath a tree in the front yard. Bill was known and respected for miles around for his welding, whether fixing or building, and for his farming. He was recognized for his dedication to the land and his neighbors.

After graduation and the death of his father in 1953, Bill began farming full time. The farm was the love of his life until March 6, 1955, when Bill married Bernelda Artz. To this union, three children were born. Bill and Bernelda celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this past year in Arizona.

His joys in life, outside of spending time with family, were building and creating with iron, racing motorcycles, building dune buggies and playing in the high desert of Arizona. He will be greatly missed by a multitude of family and friends.

Bill was a member of the Bartley Christian Church, Bartley Lions Club, National Rifle Association, McCook Elks Lodge and Fraternal Order of Eagles. He served on the Board of the Bartley Equity.

Preceding him in death were his parents and a brother, Dean.

Survivors include his wife, Bernelda and special dog, Molly, of Bartley; a daughter, Kem and husband, Dennis McConville, of Indianola; two sons Kevin Nelson and wife, Deb, of Omaha and Chris Nelson of Bartley; one sister, Norma Nelson and husband, Don, of Delaware; four grandchildren Dannette Miller, Dustin McConville and wife, Shelley, Derek McConville and wife, Paige, and Shana Koetter; six great-grandchildren; two nieces and a nephew; and a host of relatives and friends.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hospice in care Community Health Foundation.

Visitation will be Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday during business hours and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home. Friends may send condolences to www.carpenterbreland.com.

Funeral service will be Friday, January 27, 2006, 2:00 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Chapel in McCook with Rev. Sam Williams officiating. Burial will be in the Bartley cemetery.

Nellie J. (Jussel) Newberry

Nellie J. Newberry, 92, died Friday, December 17, 2004 at Cambridge Memorial Hospital in Cambridge.

She was born August 29, 1912 to Paul and Charlotte (Crocker) Jussel in Red Willow County. She attended Red Willow School and lived all her life in this area.

On January 25, 1939 she married Kenneth Doran Newberry at Indianola. She worked at the Elks Club as a chef for 27 years.

She was a member of St. Catherine’s Catholic Church and Altar Society. She enjoyed her family and playing cards and bingo.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Kenneth in 1983; and an infant daughter Ida Marie; a brother Clifford Jussel; two half brothers, Fred Reiners and Lawrence Reiners.

Survivors include: a son, Paul Newberry and wife Jane of Indianola and a daughter, Charlene Banzhaf and husband Harold of Indianola; seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials are being accepted in her name.

Rosary will be Tuesday, 7 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home in McCook.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, 10 a.m. at St Catherine’s Catholic Church in Indianola with Father Nicholas Baker officiating. Burial will be in St. Catherine’s cemetery at Indianola.

Visitation will be Monday 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. and Tuesday 9 a.m. until time of Rosary. Friends may also go online at www.carpenterbreland.com to extend condolences.

Mildred Sophie Agnes (Dankert) Niermeier

Mildred Sophie Agnes Niermeier, 84, died Monday, September 6, 2004 at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook.

Mildred was born on November 30, 1919, at Palmer, NE to Herbert Albert John and Anna Sophie (Nietfeld) Dankert. She was baptized on December 21, 1919 and confirmed on May 13, 1934 at Zion Lutheran Church in Worms, KS. She attended rural school near Palmer. She later worked for neighboring families taking care of their children.

On October 6, 1940, she married Erich Friedrich Wilhelm Niermeier at Zion Lutheran. They made their home on a farm 4 miles north of Ludell. Mildred helped her husband on the farm and was a homemaker. They retired in 1976, and moved to McCook where she was residing at the time of her death.

She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in McCook. She served on various church committees and helped with making quilts for missions and blankets for children at the hospital.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Herbert and Anna Dankert; her husband, Erich Niermeier; a daughter, Ann Castens; one sister, Florence Kanter; two brothers, Alfred and Elton Dankert and two great-grandsons, Derek and Cole Craig.

Survivors include: one son, Clarence Niermeier and wife Margaret of Ludell, KS; four daughters, Sharon and husband, Robert Frossard, of Sterling, CO, Marjorie and husband, Harold Junker, of Hastings, Lucille and husband, Charles Stoelting, of Marengo, IA, and Joann and husband, Bob Nemechek, of McCook; one brother, Melvin Dankert and wife, Loris, of Palmer; two sisters, Lorraine Fleishacker of Colby, KS and Wilma Uden of Hastings; and 17 grandchildren, Annette Long, Allen Castens, Corey Castens, Jena Lushbough, Tricia Pearson, Shawna Hurst, Tammy Craig, Michael Junker, Melinda Crow, Lucas Stoelting, Jaramie Stoelting, Jr., Bryan, Jayme and Chris Niermeier, Lora Eldred, Craig Nemechek and Tina Nemechek; and 13 great-grandchildren; 6 step-great grandchildren; 2 step great-great-grandchildren; numerous family and a host of friends.

Memorials may be given in her name.

Funeral services will be Thursday 10:30 a.m. at Peace Lutheran Church with Pastor Randy Wahl officiating. Burial will be in Emmanuel cemetery at Ludell, KS. At 2 p.m.

Visitation will be at Carpenter Breland Chapel on Wednesday 9 a.m. – 8 p.m. Friends may go online at www.carpetnerbreland.com to extend condolences.

Louis James Nothnagel

Louis James Nothnagel died Friday, November 4, 2005 in Wayne. He was 50 years old.

Louis was born on July 23, 1955 to Albert H. and Shirley Lou (McCormick) Nothnagel at McCook. He graduated from McCook Senior High in 1973.

Louis enjoyed his family, hunting, fishing, golfing and tinkering with his car. He enjoyed people, period. Louis had a heart of gold and was compassionate to all.

Preceding him in death were his father, Albert; his grand parents and an infant brother, Joe.

Survivors include: his mother Shirley of McCook; three brothers, Frank of San Diego, Calif., John and wife Betty of McCook and Dan of McCook; a sister Jolene and husband Bob Schmidt; four nieces and seven nephews.

His family has hearts that overflow with gratitude to the Lord Jesus Christ for the short time he gave Louis to us. He will be sadly missed.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Albans Episcopal Church in McCook with the Rev. Sam R. Williams officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery.

Marvin Dean Novak

Marvin Dean Novak of McCook died Friday, April 21, 2006 at McCook Community Hospital. He was 73 years old.

Marvin was born on January 2, 1933, on a farm near Belleville, Kansas to Charley and Bertha Rebecca (Sanford) Novak. He graduated from Belleville High School in 1950.

He was united in marriage to Gloria Matilda Swanson on September 9, 1953 in Fairbury. To this union four children were born. He entered the US Army on April 28, 1953. He was honorably discharged on April 13, 1955. After Marvin’s time in the service, they returned to the Wayne community where Marvin farmed. In 1960, he started working for the Bureau of Reclamation in Ellis, Kansas. The family moved to McCook in 1970. Gloria preceded him in death on March 31, 1974.

Marvin was united in marriage to Sandra Kay Johnson on February 2, 1975 in North Platte. Three more children were welcomed into his life. He retired in 1990 after 32 years of service to the Bureau.

He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, Good Sam’s Club, National Association of Retired Federal Employees, McCook Eagles and the American Legion. In his free time he enjoyed yard work and gardening, fishing, traveling, bike riding and square dancing.

Proceeding him in death were his parents, Charley and Bertha Novak; wife, Gloria; and grandson, Jeremy Dame.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra Novak of McCook; children, Cindy and husband, David Dame, of McCook, Ron Novak and significant other, Carmen Phillips, of Hastings, Gerald Novak and wife, Kristi, of McCook and Brenda and husband, Doug Hofman, of Fort Morgan, CO; step-children, Sally and husband, Bill Amador, of Aurora, CO, Steve Path of Lincoln and Amy and husband, Eric Gydesen, of Grand Island; one brother, Raymond Novak and wife, Charlene, of Hesston, KS; one sister, Emma and husband, Frank Berggren, of Belleville; 11 grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends.

Memorials may be given in his name to the American Cancer Society.

The body was cremated. Friends may sign his book from 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. on Monday or go online at www.carpenterbreland.com to extend condolences.

Memorial service will be Tuesday, April 25, 2006, 10:30 a.m. at Peace Lutheran Church with Pastor Randy Wahl officiating. Inurnment will be at Fort McPherson National cemetery, Maxwell, at 2:00 p.m. with full honor military committal.

Edith W. (Pugh) Peterson

Edith W. Peterson, age 89, died Sunday, April 30, 2006, at Brighton, Colorado.

Edith was born April 29, 1917, to Blaine and Grace (Young) Pugh, in Madison County NE.

She married Paul Peterson at Palisade on January 10, 1937. To this union two children were born, Larry and Donna. She and her husband farmed south of Palisade, Hayes Center and South and North of McCook. She enjoyed playing cards and helped residents at Hillcrest play bingo.

She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church

She was preceded in death by her parents, Blaine and Grace; husband, Paul in 1985;
brothers, Baize, Charles and Dale Pugh.

Survivors include her son, Larry Peterson and wife, Jane of Thornton, CO; daughter, Donna and husband Dennis Wagner of Windsor CO; grandsons Mark Peterson of Dacono, CO; Randy Peterson of Denver, CO, Kyle Wagner and wife Stacy of Fountain, CO; and granddaughter Lindsay Wagner of Longmont, CO.; sisters-in-law, Nelma Pugh of Palisade and Helen Pugh of Whittier, CA.

Memorials may be given in her name.

Funeral services are set for Thursday, May 4, 2006, at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Randy Wahl officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park cemetery.

Visitation will be Wednesday, 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
