William Forrest Poore, Jr.

William Forrest Poore, Jr., 74, died Monday, February 21, 2005 at Community Hospital in McCook.

He was born March 10, 1930 in McCook to William F. Poore, Sr. and Mildred D. (Modrell) Poore. He grew up in McCook and graduated from McCook High School in 1949. He attended the Nebraska State Trade School in Milford.

He married Anna Lucille Coursey in Hudson, CO on September 7, 1952.

He served in the US Air Force from 1951-1955 during the Korean Conflict.

Before retiring he worked 30 years as a maintenance supervisor for the U.S. Postal Service in the Denver area. He was a Scoutmaster for 25 years and he enjoyed carpentry.

He was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church, a lifetime member of the VFW, the McCook Masonic Lodge # 135 AF& AM.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife; two sisters, Bonnie Jean Poore and Marjorie June Bradshaw.

Survivors include: four sons, Stephen Poore and wife, Pamela of Belgrade, MT, Timothy Poore and wife, Dawn of Morris, MN, Kenneth Poore of Denver, CO, and Dean Poore and wife, Tracy of Northridge, OH; four brothers, Wayne Poore and wife, Edna, Donald Poore and wife, Mary, Dale Poore and wife, Peggy and Rex Poore and wife, Jeanette all of McCook; a sister, Mary Ann Tardiff and husband Ron of Alamogordo, NM; and eight grandchildren.

Memorials may be given in his name to McCook Senior Center.

Funeral services will be Friday, February 25, 2005 at 2 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home in McCook with Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Thurman officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery.

Visitation will be Wednesday until 5 p.m. and Thursday 9 a.m.- 8 p.m. and Friday until 1 p.m. Friends may also go on-line at carpenterbreland.com to leave condolences for the family.

Cozetta Lamoni (Fritsche) Porter

Cozetta Lamoni Porter died Sunday, October 23, 2005 at Bryan LGH Hospital in Lincoln. She was 73 years old.

Cozetta was born on February 18, 1932 in Frontier County to Louis C. and Clarissa M. (Blake) Fritsche. She graduated from Maywood High School in 1950.

On April 8, 1950, she married Vernon L. Porter at the Methodist Church in Maywood. To this union three children were born Nancy, twins Larry and Mary Lou. They made their home in Maywood, Hayes Center and later moving to Lincoln in 1977, where she was residing at the time of her death. Cozetta was employed as a computer operator for a bank.

Preceding her death were her parents Louis and Clarissa Fritsche; twin daughter, Mary Lou; and three brothers-in-law, Richard Otto Blake, Dale Porter and Ronald Baker.

Survivors include her husband, Vernon Porter of Lincoln; daughter, Nancy Fricke of Ogallala; son, Larry Porter and wife, Marjorie, of McCook; three grandsons, Douglas Fricke, Jr. and wife, Connie Ayres, of Council Bluffs, IA, Travis Porter of Beatrice and Trevor Porter and wife, Vanessa, of Wichita, KS; one granddaughter, Tracy and husband, Chris Jaeger of Cheyenne, WY; two great-grandsons, James and Wyatt Jaeger of Cheyenne; one great-granddaughter, Tressa Porter of Wichita; one brother Paul Fritsche and wife, LaVina of McCook; one sister Mildred Baker of Papillion; three sisters-in-law Vertice Porter of Crestview, FL, Mildred Blake of Bennett, CO and Roberta and husband, Delbert Maris of McCook; one brother-in-law, Ivan Porter of Nashville, TN; an aunt, Wilma Blake of Colorado Springs, CO; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be at Roper & Sons Funeral Home in Lincoln on Tuesday, October 25, from 2:00 until 9:00 p.m. The family will be greeting friends from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Visitation in McCook will be Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until time of rosary and Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.

Rosary will be Thursday at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home in McCook at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, Oct. 28, 2005 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Father Gary Brethour officiating. Burial will be in the Maywood cemetery.

Nancy Elaine Prosser-Weedin

Nancy Elaine Prosser-Weedin died Wednesday (June 22, 2005) at her home in McCook.

She was the first child born July 26, 1944 in Alliance, Nebraska to Helen (Kenagy) and Leonard Prosser.

She lived on the family homestead in Sioux County in the sod house built by her Prosser grandparents, father and uncle until the spring of 1949, when the family moved to Crawford.

She attended Crawford Public Schools until she graduated in 1962. She attended Hastings College from 1962-1965 and received a BS degree in music education in 1966 from Chadron State College. She accepted her first teaching position in the fall of 1966 in Grant, Nebraska and taught K-8 instrumental and vocal music until 1969. She earned an elementary teaching endorsement in 1976 at Chadron State College. She earned her master's degree in administration in 1990. Nancy was a teacher or a principal for 35 years in western Nebraska and Colorado retiring in the fall of 2005.

In 1968 she married James Wesley Wilson in Grant, Nebraska. To this union were born two children, Cynthia (Wilson) Seagren and Wade Wilson. They moved to Loveland, Colorado in 1969 after Nancy acquired a music teaching position with the Big Thompson School District. She completed one year of teaching before staying home to raise their daughter. Jim and Nancy were divorced in the fall of 1977. In 1980, she married Gene Weedin. Nancy returned to the Grant Public Schools in 1977 and taught or was principal of the K-8 building until 1998. She then accepted a principalship at Grandview Elementary in Alliance, Nebraska, until she was offered a position in McCook where she served as an administrator of both East Ward and Central Elementary. Nancy also served as principal of West Ward in its last year and was the district assessment coordinator for a year and a half. When the district cut its staff numbers Nancy chose to return to the classroom. It was to be her final year as she contracted lung cancer and spent her last days enjoying retirement and reconnecting with friends across the state.

Some of her favorite activities included being with children - her own, her classes of students, and her grandchildren, reading, crafting, and camping.

She was a member of the McCook Memorial United Methodist Church, Nebraska Pride Chorus of Sweet Adelines International, Nebraska Council of School Administrators, and Phi Delta Kappa. She was a member of various education organizations throughout the years.

She was preceded in death by her father Leonard Prosser and nephew Jason Prosser.

Surviving family include her husband, Gene of McCook, Nebraska; daughter Cindi Seagren and husband Casey of Maywood, Nebraska; son Wade Wilson and daughter-in-law Keri of Twin Falls, Idaho; grandchildren, Ridge Neal, Jake Neal, Savannah Wilson, and Blake Wilson, Jaycee Seagren, and Reid Seagren; her mother, Helen Prosser; brothers Emory and Jim Prosser of Crawford, Nebraska and David Prosser of North Carolina.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Memorial United Methodist Church in McCook, NE, the education foundations of Grant Public Schools, Alliance Public Schools, or McCook Public Schools.

Visitation will be Friday during business hours, Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until noon, and Sunday from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Please use the South door entrance.

Funeral Service will be Monday, June 27, 2005, 10:00 a.m. at Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Jeff Thurman officiating. A private family inurnment will be held at a later time.

Valois Irene (Hall) Pullen

Valois “Val” Irene Pullen, 81, of McCook died Saturday, January 1, 2005 at Community Hospital.

She was born April 24, 1923 in Council Bluffs, Iowa to Lewis W. and Anna A. (Weaver) Hall. Her elementary education was in Council Bluffs and Fairbury Public Schools. She graduated from Fairbury High School in 1941.

She graduated from the University of Nebraska with a Bachelor of Arts in 1947 with a major in Microbiology and Minors in Chemistry and English. She did graduate studies in Education at UNL, Kansas State University and Kearney State College.

She married Robert L. Pullen on April 18, 1946, at Howard Hall on the University of Nebraska campus. They had no children. Bob and Val were always involved in education. They moved to McCook in 1954 where he served McCook College as instructor as well as registrar. He was a Congregational minister for the towns of Diller, Cambridge and McCook.

Val was an elementary teacher in Riverton, Franklin from 1951-1954. She taught first grade at West Ward in McCook from 1954-1958. She then taught eight grade science at the junior high from 1958-1982 and taught summer sessions at McCook Community College from 1955-1966.

Val found an extended family through her very active involvement in the local, state, and national education associations. Her service in all possible positions for the McCook Education Association (MEA) lead to successful elections as District V President, as a member of the Board of Directors, and eventually as full-time president of the Nebraska State Education Association for the 1980-1981 school year. Val was instrumental in founding the NSEA-R (Nebraska State Education Association-Retired) and served nationally as Advisory Council member and then President of NEA-R (National Education Association-Retired). Val always said “Every decision that affects education is a political decision.” She was appointed by Gov. Exon to a term on the Nebraska Professional Practices Commission (NPPC) for 1978-1981 and served as president of the National Council of State Education Associations (NCSEA) for 1981-1982.

She loved teaching her students and maintained an interest in kids all around her even late in her life. Val's other love was traveling and she organized van trips with friends from McCook. She enjoyed traveling to Alaska many times to visit her great-nephews Bailey & Skylar Arend.

She was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church, MUMC Esther Circle, McCook Library Board and Foundation, the YMCA Board, Chi Chapter Delta Kappa Gamma, and Chapter GY P.E.O.

She is survived by her brother Myrton L. Hall and his wife Dee of Omaha; nephews Chris & Maggi Arend of Anchorage, AK., Randy & Jean Hall of St Paul. MN and Lewis & Karen Christensen of Phoenix, AZ; “surrogate” grandchildren, Scott Busing of College Station, TX., Mark Busing of Jakarta, Indonesia, Shelby and Riley Allen and their dad, Ken of McCook.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on December 9, 1972; and 2 sisters Phyllis Christensen and Roberta (Bobbe) Arend.

Memorials may be sent in her name to the McCook Public Library Foundation (% Jim Hamill, 220 Norris Ave., McCook, NE 69001) or the Ed Thomas YMCA (PO Box 408, McCook, NE 69001).

Funeral services will be Thursday, (January 6, 2005) at 10 a.m. at Memorial United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Thurman officiating. Burial will be in Riverview cemetery.

At Val’s request there will be rolls and coffee for her family and friends before the service at 8:45 a.m. in the church basement. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Visitation will be Wednesday 9 a.m. – 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Friends may also go online at www.carpenterbreland.com to extend condolences.

Josephine G. (Guerrero) Ramos

Josephine G. Ramos died Monday, August 29, 2005 at her home in McCook. She was 85 years old.

She was born on September 14, 1919 in Corpus Christi, TX to Miguel and Paula (Castillo) Guerrero. She grew up in Corpus Christi and married Guadalupe Ramos on March 28, 1946. To this union four children were born.

They moved to McCook in 1963 and she began working for McCook Community Hospital. She received the Hospital’s “Caring Kind Award” in 1986, and retired that same year.

She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, the Alter Society and the Hospital Auxiliary. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and playing bridge and card games with her friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Manuel; one grandson; three brothers, Meliton, Isabel-t and Juan Guerrero; two sisters, Luciana Alaniz and Gavina Garcia.

Survivors include: two sons, Joe Ramos and wife Elena of San Antonio, TX and G.G. Ray Ramos of VA; a daughter, Angie Garcia and husband George of McCook; 21 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials are being accepted in her name.

Rosary will be Friday, September 2nd at 7 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Chapel.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, September 3rd at 2:00 p.m.at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in McCook with Father Gary Brethour officiating. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery.

Visitation will be Wednesday and Thursday during business hours and Friday until time of the Rosary. Friends may also go online at www.carpenterbreland.com to extend condolences.

Eileen Ruth (Miller) Randel

Eileen Ruth Randel, 66 of Indianola, died Friday, March 31, 2006 in Lincoln County, south of North Platte, as a result of a car accident.

She was born January 5, 1940 in Culbertson to John W. and Martha (Wagner) Miller. She grew up in Culbertson where she graduated from high school in 1957.

She attended Nebraska State Teachers College in Kearney and graduated in 1961 with a Bachelor of Science Degree majoring in Home Economics. She taught Home Economics at Chappell High School for two years and then taught at McCook High School from the fall of 1963 to the spring of 1967.

On June 13, 1965, she married Clifford Eugene Randel at the Culbertson Evangelical United Brethren Church. They made their home northeast of McCook. To this union three children were born, Michelle, Loretta and Brad. Eileen was instrumental in their farming and ranching business. She enjoyed her children and grandchildren and was very involved in their daily lives.

She was a member of the Indianola Church of Christ and attended McCook Christian Church. She was active in the Red Willow Ladies Club and the Red Willow County Extension Council.

Eileen was preceded in death by her parents and also her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Leon and Dorothy Randel.

Survivors include her husband Clifford of Indianola; daughters, Michelle Larington and husband, Dan, of Indianola and Loretta Hauxwell and husband, Brent, of McCook; a son, Brad Randel and wife Adrienne of Indianola; five grandchildren, Sara and Dane Larington, Kylee and Lexi Hauxwell and Addison Randel; two brothers, Donald Miller and wife, Gwen, and Roland Miller and wife, Jeannette, all of Culbertson; two sisters, Joan Hesterwerth and husband, Robert, of McCook and Lois Bartusiak and husband, Ray, of Littleton, CO; brother-in-law, Raymond Fisher and wife, Patsy, of Indianola; and many niece and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are being accepted in her name.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, 11 a.m. at McCook Christian Church with Pastor Clark Bates officiating. Burial will be in the Indianola cemetery.

Robert T. Ray

Robert T. Ray, 78, of McCook died Thursday (April 14, 2005) at Community Hospital of McCook.

On January 20, 1927 he was born to Clark Calvin and Anne (Webb) Ray in San Francisco, California. He graduated from Hayward High School in Hayward, California in 1945.

Bob, as his friends called him, served with the United States Marine Corp during World War II, and fought on the island of Okinawa. He served on occupation duty with the Marines in China. He later served with the 1st United States Infantry Division in Germany. He also served with the 213th Field Artillery, C Battery in Korea. He was involved in three battles in the Korean Conflict. He later joined the United States Air Force, serving in France, the United States, and Japan. While in Japan he went on tour of duty in South East Asia and was involved in three different battles in the Vietnam War. In 1969 he came back to the United States and retired from the military.

While serving in France, Bob married Avis Nelson in Zurich, Switzerland on June 6, 1957. They lived overseas, and when Bob retired from the military, they moved to McCook, Nebraska.

After retiring from the military, Bob worked as a self-employed carpenter and for the State of Nebraska Historical Society as the curator at both the Norris Home in McCook and Neihart Center in Bancroft. When Bob retired from the State Historical Society, he moved back to McCook, and since 1991, has owned Bob’s Books presently in the old DeGroff’s building.

Bob was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served as Branch President in 1977 and 1978. He was the current president of the McCook Kiwanis and served as Lt. Governor of District 24. He was a member of the State Historical Society, and was a charter member of both our local Genealogical Society and the State Genealogical Society. Bob was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Bob believed in supporting our local government, and he was elected to the McCook City Council and served on the park board.

Preceding him in death were: his parents; two brothers, Bert and Clark, and one sister, Marion Ruby.

Survivors include: his wife, Avis of McCook; one son, Robert and wife, Dacrus, and three grandchildren, Daniela, Adam, and Jessica of Aurora, Colorado; two sisters, Maxine Lukins of Santa Clara, California and Kathleen Smith and husband, Alan, of Eureka, California.

Memorials may be given to the Southwest Nebraska Genealogical Society.

Funeral services will be Monday (April 18, 2005) at 10 a.m. at the Carpenter Breland Funeral Home with President Steven Shaner of the McCook Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints officiating.

Burial will be at Fort McPherson at 2:30 PM, with the North Platte Veteran’s Honor Guard.
