Patrick S. Sheets

Patrick S. Sheets died Monday, January 23, 2006, near Hayes Center as a result of an automobile accident. He was 15 years old.

Patrick was born in Imperial to Ernie S. Sheets and Teresa D. James. He was a freshman at Hayes Center High School where he played football and basketball.

He was a member of the Union Congregational Church Youth Group. He enjoyed horseback riding, motorcycles and 4-wheeling. He was well liked by his peers especially the girls.

Survivors include his father, Ernie Sheets of Hayes Center and step-mother, Tammy Watkins of Palisade; two brothers, Preston Sheets of Hayes Center and Devin Watkins of Palisade; two sisters, Taylr Trisdale and Isabell Sheets both of Palisade; grandparents, Henry and Kitty Sramek of Palisade and Geanne Kimball of Harlingen, Texas; numerous uncles, aunts, cousins and a host of friends.

Visitation will be Wednesday during business hours and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home. Friends may send condolences online at www.carpenterbreland.com.

Memorials may be given in his name.

Funeral service will be Friday, January 27, 2006, 10:30 a.m. at the Hayes Center High School Gym with Rev. Fay Ann Blaylock officiating. Burial will be in the Hayes Center cemetery.

Margaret Shipman

Margaret Shipman, 83, died Wednesday, June 30, 2004, at Hillcrest Nursing Home.

Margaret was born on January 21, 1921, at Des Moines, Iowa to Albert Lee and Faye Viola (Covalt) Shipman, Sr. She attended rural school in Alliance, NE. She had been living in McCook for many years, first at the Townhouse and most recently at Hillcrest.

Margaret was a homemaker and spent many hours watching movies and listening to the radio.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Albert and Faye Shipman; step-father, Louis Biltoft; one brother, Albert Shipman and infant brother.

Survivors include her two daughters, Phyllis Biltoft of Alliance and Evelyn Goodshot-Segovia of Denver, CO; and three grandchildren.

There will be no local services. A private family inurnment will be at a later time. Friends may send condolences to the family at www.carpenterbreland.com.

Gerald “Pudge” Dean Sitzman

Gerald Dean “Pudge” Sitzman of Indianola died Friday, December 16, 2005 at Bryan LGH East in Lincoln. He was 70 years old.

He was born June 17, 1935 at Culbertson to Henry C. and Helen (Hill) Sitzman. He graduated from Culbertson High School in 1952 and lived in this area all his life.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1954 – 1957. He worked at Dayco Hose Plant from 1977 until 2002 when he retired.

He married Peggy N. (Kinne) Zwickle at the United Methodist Church in Indianola on September 26, 1981.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church.

Preceding him in death were his parents; a sister, Betty and her husband Gene Schwenk and a sister-in-law, Marilyn Sitzman; and a mother-in-law, Evelyn Kinne.

Survivors include: his wife Peggy of Indianola; three sons, Gary Sitzman and wife Barbara of Kearney, Ronnie Sitzman and wife Darla of Grand Island and Randy Zwickle and wife Chris of McCook; a daughter, Roseanne and husband Jeff Ahlemeyer of Wilsonville; 14 grandchildren, one great-grandchild; two brothers, Dick Sitzman of Indianola and Bill Sitzman and wife Sharon of Culbertson; three sisters, Marianne Cole and husband Kenneth of Indianola, Barb Brown and husband Dolyn of Culbertson and Kathy Dueter of McCook.

Memorials are being accepted in his name.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Indianola with Rev. David Rowe officiating. Burial will be in the Indianola cemetery.

Visitation will be Monday from 9 a.m. - 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 9a.m. – 8 p.m. at the funeral home in McCook.

Clyde Frederick Starrett

Clyde Frederick Starrett, 83, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2005, at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook, NE. He was born Sept. 16, 1921 in Kingman, KS to Ellis L. and Frederica Angela (Johnson) Starrett, the oldest of four children.

Clyde graduated from Atwood High School at Atwood, KS in 1939 and completed two years of college prior to joining the U.S. Army in 1942, where he was stationed in India as a cryptographer, decoding messages. After returning from the service in 1945, he married Helen V. Meyers on Jan. 6, 1946 in Norton, KS. They had four children.

He earned a law degree from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in 1950 and upon graduation worked in Kansas City as an accountant with the Arthur Anderson firm. He later lived in Wilsonville, NE before moving to McCook in 1954, where for several years he and Bill Lyons practiced law together in the firm Lyons and Starrett before he went into practice for himself in 1962. He served as Red Willow County Attorney during the early 1970s and ultimately resided in McCook for over 50 years.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church of McCook, Arapahoe Masonic Lodge, Arapahoe American Legion, and when active the McCook Elks Club.

Preceding him in death were Ralph E. Starrett, a brother; his parents; Mark R. Starrett, a nephew; Ethel (Clark) Starrett, his stepmother; and Andrew D. Matchett, a brother-in-law.

Survivors include: a son, Frederick Starrett and wife Linda of Overland Park, KS; three daughters, Barbara Starrett of Lawrence, KS, Judith Starrett and husband Andrew Lax of Cornelius, NC, and Jane Tower and husband Christopher of Export, PA; a sister, Frances L. Matchett of Austin, TX and a brother, Raymond H. and wife Joyce Taylor of La Crosse, WI; eight grandchildren, Courtney Starrett, Kathryn (Starrett) Rickley and husband Aaron, Scott Starrett, Benjamin Tower, Stephanie Tower, Jordan Lax, Austen Lax, and Samantha Tower; and seven nieces/nephews.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in McCook, NE with Rev. Brian Fong officiating with burial at 1:30 p.m. in the Norton cemetery, Norton, KS.

Visitation will be Wednesday and Thursday until 5 p.m. and Friday until 8 p.m.

Memorials are being accepted in Clyde’s name on behalf of the American Cancer Society.

Terry Lee Steier

Terry Lee Steier died Sunday (April 17, 2005) at United Medical Center Hospital in Cheyenne, Wyoming. He was 31 years old.

On June 26, 1973 he was born in Oberlin, Kansas to Curtis L. and Deborah K. (Eby) Steier. He graduated from Herndon High School in 1992.

He married Gina Frazier in June of 1996 in Kearney. They had two children, Dalton and Tyla.

He was a truck driver working in Cheyenne, Wyoming for S & S Builders General Contractors and was on the security staff for Scooters Bar. He loved sports, including basketball, softball, bowling and rodeo. He was a rodeo clown and also rode bulls.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Herbert and Florence Steier, grandfather George Eby and an uncle, Stan Eby.

Survivors include: his parents; two sons, Dalton Seybold of Wilcox, Corbin Steier of Kearney; a daughter, Tyla Steier of Wilcox; two sisters, Teena Steier and Tabitha Steier both of North Platte; grandmother, Verna Eby of Goodland, Kansas; and two nieces, Kirstyn Shellabarger & Ashlyn Steier; and many friends, including his extended “family” in Cheyenne.

In Lieu of flowers, memorials are being accepted in his name.

Funeral services will be Saturday, April 23, 2005 at 11 a.m. at the Indianola Christian Church with Scott Mustion officiating. Burial will be in the Indianola cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday, 9 a.m. - 8 p.m. at the funeral home in McCook. Friends may sign his book at the funeral home or may go on-line at www.carpenterbreland.com to extend condolences.

Ronald F. Stevens

Ronald F. “Tug” Stevens died Friday, March 25, 2005 at Hillcrest Nursing Home. He was 94 years old.

Tug was born on June 28, 1910, at Indianola, NE to Fred and Maude (Jones) Stevens, the fourth child of four children. He graduated from Indianola High School in 1929.

Tug entered the US Navy on September 14, 1942 and served during World War II. He was a Second Class Baker on the Destroyer USS Charles F. Hughes. He was honorably discharged in 1945.

On November 10, 1940, he married Lorraine “Tiny” Jane Stevens at McCook. To this union two children were born, a daughter, Linda and son Todd. They made their home in Red Willow County where Tug loved farming and trading cars. He retired in 1977. He had been living at Hillcrest Nursing Home for the past five years.

Tug was a 57 and one half year member of the Indianola American Legion Post #0344, past member of the BPOE Elks Lodge #1434, and in 1995 he was awarded the Bronze Leader of the Disabled American Veterans Commanders Club.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Lorraine of 57 years on December 14, 1997; a sister, Catherine in infancy and two sisters, Iva Jones and Myrle Stevens.

Survivors include his daughter, Linda Stevens of McCook; son, Todd Stevens of McCook; nephews, Jim, Jerry and Harold Jones of Denver, CO; niece, Lois Jane Gertner of Olympia, WA; and sister-in-law, Sharlaine Robarchek of Potwin, KS.

Memorials may be given in his name.

Visitation will be Saturday until noon and Monday 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, March 29, 2005, 11:00 a.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home with Clark Bates officiating. Burial will be in the Indianola cemetery with Indianola Veterans Honor Guard Committal.

Charles 'Chuck' Eugene Stewart

Charles “Chuck” Eugene Stewart, 47, of Kearney, died Monday, August 16, 2004 at his parent’s home in McCook.

Chuck was born on August 4, 1957, at Alliance to William Arthur and Bettye Anne (Solace) Stewart. He graduated from McCook High School in 1976. He attended Mid- Plains Community College in North Platte and graduated with an Associates Degree in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Technology.

On February 14, 1981, he married DeeAnna Sauer in McCook. To this union a daughter, Sheree was born. He moved to Denver where he lived for 10 years. He relocated to Kearney where he was employed in construction work.

He was an avid fisherman; enjoyed playing cards and pool; and fan of football especially the Nebraska Huskers and Denver Broncos.

He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Robert and Randall Stewart.

Survivors include his parents, Bill and Bettye Stewart of McCook; a daughter, Sheree Stewart of Ogallala; and two brothers, Michael Stewart of Houston, TX and Dennis Stewart of Kearney.

Memorials may be given in his name.

Funeral service will be at Carpenter Breland Chapel on Friday, August 20, 2004, 10:00 a.m. with the Rev. Dr. Jeff Thurman officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery.

Visitation will be today until 5:00 p.m. and Thursday 9:00 until 8:00 p.m.

Virginia Marie (Baumbach) Stinson

Virginia Marie Stinson, 82, died on Monday, March 1, 2004, at the Community Hospital of McCook, NE.

She was born to William Frederick and Lillian Marie (Junker) Baumbach, Jr. on January 9, 1922, in Red Willow County, McCook, NE. She attended country school in Indianola.

She married Kenneth F. Stinson, August 10, 1943, in Denver, CO. They farmed in the Indianola and Palisade area until Kenneth’s death in 1976. In 1983, she was married to Willard Yost of Wauneta.

She was a member of the Catholic Church in McCook and Palisade.

Virginia was a loving and devoted wife and mother. She was an adoring grandmother and great-grandmother and a dear friend to all that knew her. She enjoyed gardening and cooking. She liked to sew and had a great passion for making quilts and also enjoyed attending craft fairs.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and two husbands.

Survivors include: Two sons, Greg Stinson and wife Carolyn of Douglas, WY, Robert Stinson and wife Paula of Palisade. Three daughters: Kathy Roesener of Stromsberg, Karen Reiners and husband Jerry of Mountain Home, AK, Peggy Stinson-Moore and husband, Warren of Parker, CO: One brother Howard Baumbach of McCook and one sister, Lucille Ireland of McCook: Eleven grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, six step-grandsons, two step-granddaughters and their children.

Memorials may be given in her name to the American Cancer Society and can be mailed to the funeral home.

Rosary will be Wednesday, March 3, 2004, 6:30 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, March 4, 2004, 10:30 a.m., at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Father Gary Brethour officiating. Burial will be in the Palisade cemetery. Friends may sign her book at the funeral home.

Arthur Raymond Stock

Arthur Raymond Stock died Wednesday, December 1, 2004, at his rural Culbertson home. He was 76 years old.

Arthur was born on May 10, 1928, in Hitchcock County, Nebraska to William Winton and Erma Fern (Matson) Stock. He graduated from Culbertson High School in 1946 and attended Veteran’s Agriculture School in Hayes Center.

On September 17, 1950 he married Dixie Marie Marks at Trenton, Nebraska. Shortly after their marriage, Arthur joined the US Army on December 12, 1950. He was a Sergeant in Command of the 12th Unit of Company D, 56th Amphibian Tank and Tractor Battalion stationed in Japan during the Korean War, entering the 10th Infantry Division of the 86th Platoon at Ft. Riley, Kansas. He was honorably discharged on December 24, 1952.

After Arthur’s discharge they made their home on a farm south of Culbertson where they farmed until the time of his death. To this marriage three children were born. Arthur was President of the Grove cemetery Association for many years. He was also a member of the Culbertson Veteran’s of Foreign Wars.

Preceding him in death were his parents, William and Fern Stock; and nephew, Russell Daugherty.

Survivors include his wife, Dixie Stock of Culbertson; daughters, Linda Dirks of Ludell, Kansas and Kathy Scott of North Platte; son, Dale Stock and wife, Shauna, of Culbertson; sisters, Alta Fahrenbruch of Norton, KS and Lavena and husband, Russell Marks, of Trenton; five grandchildren, Stacy Hurst, Brandon Dirks, Allen Scott, and Brady Stock; three great-grandchildren, Jason Scott, Breanna Hurst and Kaylie Scott; numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be given in his name.

Visitation will be today until 8:00 p.m., Friday 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and Sunday 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. Friends may go online at www.carpeneterbreland.com to extend condolences.

Funeral service will be Monday, December 6, 2004, 10:00 a.m. at Carpenter Breland Chapel with Johnny Walker officiating. Burial will be in the Grove cemetery south of Culbertson with Military Committal.
