LeAnn Christy (Stasser) Johnson

LeAnn Christy Johnson, 38, died Saturday, February 25, 2006 near Hayes Center, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

LeAnn was born January 30, 1968 to Gilbert D. and Patricia A. (McKinley) Stasser, at Burlington, CO. She graduated from high school in St. Francis, KS in 1986, and attended the Northwest Kansas Area Vocational Tech School in Goodland, KS receiving a degree in electronics.

She married Jon Johnson in St. Francis, KS on June 10, 1988 and to this union two children were born, Cody and Ashley.

She lived must of her adult life in Cloud and Jewell Counties in Kansas, where she worked at Trapper’s Restaurant in Simpson, KS. In February 2005, she moved to Hayes Center, NE and worked as a desk clerk for Days Inn at McCook, NE. She loved animals, collected wolf artifacts, and was devoted to her children.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Gilbert and Patricia Stasser; maternal grandparents, Herbert and Lola McKinley; and paternal grandparents, Everett and Margaret Stasser.

Survivors include her daughter, Ashley and son, Cody of Independence, KS; brother, Larry Atkins and wife Cathy of Edgemont, SD; sisters, Kathy Ellis of Jamestown, KS, Paula Hebel, and Sherri Peterson and husband John of Fayetteville, NC; life partner, Mark Long of Hayes Center; and numerous family and a host of friends.

Memorials were to be given in her name for her children’s trust fund, in care of Carpenter Breland Funeral Home, P.O. Box 476, McCook, NE 69001.

Memorial services took place on March 1, 2006, 10:30 a.m. at First Christian Church in St. Francis, KS with Pastor Tony Christians officiating. Burial took place in St. Francis, KS and Hot Springs, South Dakota.

Carpenter Breland Funeral Home of McCook was in charge of the arrangements.

Marjorie Lillian (Schultz) Johnston

After a 98 year life filled with travel, culture, family and friends, Marjorie Lillian Johnston, of McCook, Nebraska, passed away at the Community Hospital of McCook, on January 21, 2005.

Marjorie was born in Atkinson, Nebraska, on February 2, 1906. She was one of two daughters and three sons to William L. and Violet (Malzacher) Schultz.

Post high school graduation from Atkinson High School in 1923, Marjorie taught in the local rural school system for 2 years. She left this position to matriculate at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. Utilizing her passion for education, Marjorie later taught in both the Minneapolis, MN. and McCook, NE. school systems.

On September 1, 1930, Marjorie married fellow educator Phillip M. Johnston, a member of the McCook school system faculty at that time. The couple later owned and operated the Chief Motel in McCook.

Marjorie’s interest in travel was fulfilled while Phillip was employed by The Grolier Book Company. Acting as his personal navigator and bookkeeper, she accompanied him on his many school book selling trips throughout the Southwest United States and Hawaii.

Later in life, Marjorie developed a strong love for art and personal expression. She became an accomplished water colorist and active member of the McCook Art Guild for over 20 years. Combining her passions for art and travel, Marjorie had the opportunity to participate in various painting holidays including ones to Guatemala and St. Simon’s Island. She was also a very avid gardener and reader.

Marjorie was a long-standing member of the Memorial United Methodist Church in McCook. Other affiliations included the PEO, Chapter BU in Atkinson and the PEO, Chapters X and FA in McCook. While attending the University of Nebraska, she pledged and was activated as a member of the Zeta Gamma Chapter of Phi Mu Sorority.

Marjorie was very proud of her most recent honor for 50 years of service to the Daughters of the American Revolution, 37th Chapter in McCook, Nebraska.

Her survivors include nieces Barbara Tullo of Pine, AZ. And Marjorie Sims of New Ipswich, New Hampshire; and nephews Bill Schultz of Oakland, CA., Dick Schultz of Palo Alto, CA., and Jack Schultz of Los Angeles, CA.

Marjorie’s wish is for contributions to be made to the McCook Educational Foundation for “The Phillip M. Johnston Memorial Scholarship Fund”, in lieu of flowers.

Services were Wednesday, 1:30 p.m., at Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Jeff Thurman officiating. Interment took place in Memorial Park cemetery.

Gregory Dean Jording

Gregory Dean Jording, 36, died July 7, 2004, at his home in McCook.

He was born July 11, 1967, in McCook to Elwood and Ida (McGuire) Jording. He graduated from McCook High School and Mid-Plains Community College in North Platte.

He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Ida Jording.

Survivors include his father, Elwood Jording of McCook.

Graveside inurnment took place Monday, 10 a.m., at the Oberlin cemetery.

Memorials were to be made to Hillcrest Nursing Home.

LaVerda Arlene (Payne) Karp

LaVerda “Verdie” Arlene Karp, 76, died Monday, September 26, 2005 at Community Hospital in McCook.

She was born to Sumner C. and Fern E. (Salade) Payne on December 16, 1928 in McCook. She spent her early childhood years around Bird City, Kans. Then moved back to this area and graduated from Red Willow High School in 1948.

She married Frederick Payne in Cambridge on September 14, 1953. To this union one son and three daughters were born.

She enjoyed her family, playing cards, cooking and all sports.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband in 1982; two brothers, Byron and wife Arita Payne and Elton Dale in infancy; a sister, Verdeen and husband Marty Schuman; and a sister-in-law, Rose Mary Payne.

Survivors include: a son, David Karp and wife Julia of McCook; daughters, Donna Marie Wickizer of Cambridge, Barbara Jean Mayo of Kearney and Linda Kathleen Dethlefsen of McCook; brothers, Truman L. Payne of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a sister, Lynda F. Richardson and husband Terry of Aberdean, S. Dak.; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and special friend Rodger Scott.

Memorials were being accepted in her name.

Funeral services were Friday, 2 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home in McCook with Jerry Beckenhauer officiating. Burial took place in the Indianola cemetery.

James Donald Keeler

James “Don” Donald Keeler passed away Thursday, February 9, 2006, at Haven Manor in Lincoln, Nebraska. He was 87 years old.

He was born June 3, 1918 in Fairmont, Nebraska to James B. and Hannah A. (Davis) Keeler. He attended a country school in Filmore County, and then graduated from Fairmont High in 1935.

He married JoEllyn Stromp on June 29, 1952 in Albion, Nebraska. To this union three children were born. He owned and operated Keeler’s House of Bottles in Culbertson for 29 years and he enjoyed traveling with his family.

He served in the United States Army during WWII from June of 1943 to October of 1945. He had Basic Training at Camp Walters in Texas and at Camp Gruber in Oklahoma. He was shipped overseas to Iran where he spent two years and then spent seven months in France. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Tec 4 classification. He loved baseball which he was able to play in both Iran and France competing in tournaments in both countries.

He was a member of the Culbertson American Legion and past Commander of Moorhous-Steffen-Propp VFW Post # 6219.

“Dad was an honorable man and a selfless and loving father.”

He was preceded in death by parents, wife, JoEllyn in March of 1999; sister, Alice Ritchey; and a brother Kenneth Keeler.

Survivors include sons, Kenneth Keeler and wife Barbara of Langhorne, PA., James A. Keeler and wife Laurie of Lincoln; daughter, Janna Johansen and husband Mark of North Platte; four grandchildren, Christopher Don Keeler and wife Angela of Lancaster, PA., Matthew Jon Keeler of Langhorne, PA., Shannon Lea Keeler of Lincoln and James Benjamin Keeler of Lincoln; special sisters-in-law Mary Jumps of Culbertson, and Jean Bittner of Albion; and nieces and nephews.

Memorials were to be given to the Disabled American Veterans.

Funeral services were at Carpenter Breland Chapel on Friday, February 17, at 9:30 a.m. with Jerry Beckenhauer officiating. Burial took place in Ft. McPherson National cemetery in Maxwell at 11:30 a.m.

Jeryce Earline (Dasher) Kelly

Jeryce Earline Kelly died Saturday, August 27, 2005, at the Premier Estates Senior Living Community in North Platte. She was 61 years old.

Jeryce was born on March 24, 1944, at Rock Springs, Wyoming to Earl Thomas and Mildred Pauline (Burgess) Dasher. She graduated in 1962 from Loop County High School in Taylor. She continued her education at McCook Junior College for two years and graduated in 1989 from Chadron State College with a Bachelor’s of Art Degree in Special Education.

Jeryce married Terry Lloyd Kelly on April 23, 1963, at Pipestone, Minnesota. They were blessed with five children. She taught special education in the Hemingford Schools until her retirement in 1997. After her retirement she moved to the Bartley Community.

She was a member of the Bartley United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and past-member of NSEA. Throughout her life she was active in many youth organizations. She lead Girls Scouts, Boy Scouts, assisted with 4-H, taught Sunday School for many years and lead Jr. & Sr. High Methodist Youth groups.

Jeryce enjoyed making and collecting dolls in her spare time. She also enjoyed reading, hand crafts and spending time with her grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents; one daughter, Dawn in infancy; and two sisters, Judith Burget and Jeannette Kelley.

Survivors include her husband, Terry Kelly of Bartley; one daughter, Paulette Sell of Indianola; three sons, Patrick Kelly and wife, Michelle, of Ithaca, Sean Kelly of Bartley and Seamus Kelly and wife, LoRene, of Lincoln; one brother, George Dasher of New York; and four grandchildren, Marshall, Colin, Moira, and Maximus.

Memorials were to be given in her name.

A memorial service took place Tuesday, August 30, 2005, 10:00 a.m. at the Bartley United Methodist Church with Rev. David Rowe officiating.

Harold William Kircher

Harold “Bud” William Kircher, of rural McCook, died Tuesday, April 12, 2005 at McCook Community Hospital. He was 72 years old.

Bud was born on August 16, 1932, at McCook, to William and Mary (Hackenkamp) Kircher. He attended rural school near their family farm.

On January 27, 1953, he entered the US Army and served during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged on January 27, 1955. He returned to farm south of McCook.

On October 5, 1957 he married Velma Nadine Lauer at McCook. To this union three children were born. They made their home on the family farm where he lived the remainder of his life.

He loved his family and grandchildren. He was a hard working farmer who enjoyed tilling the ground and caring for his cattle. He will be missed by all very, very much.

Preceding him in death were his parents, William and Mary Kircher; one daughter in infancy, Michele Marie Kircher; and one sister, Margaret Teresa Bennett.

Survivors include his wife, Velma of McCook; one son, Steven Ray Kircher and wife, Sharon, of McCook; one daughter, Lisa and husband, Todd Koetter, of McCook; three granddaughters, Nicole and Kayla Koetter and Jennifer Kircher and two grandsons, Chance Koetter and Logan Kircher; two sisters, Evelyn Marie Rowden of Albuquerque, NM and Arlan Frances and husband, Gerald Huntwork, of Curtis; one brother-in-law, Myron Bennett of Oxford; many nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Memorials were to be given in his name.

Funeral service were Friday, April 15, 2005, 10:30 a.m., at Peace Lutheran Church with Pastor Randy Wahl officiating. Burial took place in Memorial Park cemetery.

Marion Amelia Meeks (Baker) Koechlein

Marion Amelia Baker Meeks Koechlein, 90, died Friday, July 30, 2004, at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook, NE.

Marion was born on March 27, 1914, at Plainfield, New Jersey, to Albert F. and Nancy Ianson (Skellenger) Baker. She graduated from Plainfield High School in 1932 and Savage School for Physical Education in New York City in 1936. She furthered her education at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ, graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in 1942. She taught physical education in Rockleigh, NJ, Utica, NY, and Plainfield, retiring in 1976.

Marion married Francis M. Meeks III, in Plainfield in July of 1941. To this union two children were born. In December of 1971, she married Donald F. Koechlein, Sr.

Marion taught swimming lessons at the Plainfield YWCA and was a life guard and teacher at summer camps for special needs children. She also was an airplane spotter during World War II. She enjoyed tennis, playing the piano, cross word puzzles, bike riding and swimming.

She was a member of United Methodist Church for over 78 years and sang in the church choir.

Marion had lived in Plainfield, NJ and Bradenton, FL for most of her life. She moved to the McCook community in May of 2001 to be near her daughter. She was residing at Hillcrest Nursing Home at the time of her death.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Donald on August 7, 1996; and two brothers, Albert and Daniel Baker.

Survivors include her children, Nancy and husband, Ron Mousel, of McCook, NE and Francis M. Meeks IV and wife, Judie, of Greensboro, GA; step-children, Sheila and husband, Fred Schmitz, of Palo Alto, CA and Donald Koechlein, Jr. of Long Branch, NJ; one sister, Francis and husband, Bob Harris of Garwood, NJ; sisters-in-law, Betty Baker of Bradenton, FL, Helen Moody of Castleton, NY, and Betsy Koechlein of Largo, FL: grandchildren, Ryan Mousel, Amanda Sutton, Brett Meeks, and Brady Meeks; step-grandchildren Fred Schmitz, Eric Schmitz, Kent Schmitz and Rachel Koechlein; three great-grandchildren and 5 step-great-grandchildren.

Memorials were given in her name to the American Cancer Society.

There was a private family service. Inurnment was in Memorial Park cemetery Columbarium in McCook, NE.
