Catherine Helen (Worske) Mitchem

Catherine Helen Mitchem, 83, died Saturday (Sept. 25, 2004) at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook.

She was born Oct. 14, 1920, to Dimatro "Mike" and Jane (Balius) Worske in McCook.

She was married Feb. 11, 1940, to Vernon Mitchem in Oberlin. Catherine was a housewife, but later worked at Woolsworth, Montgomery Ward, TRW and the Dayco Plant.

Catherine loved craft work. She started in the 50's making crepe-paper flowers, peonies and roses, dipped in wax and she sold them for Memorial Day.

Many people, family, relatives and friends, have her crocheted dress dolls, bead items and other craft art. People would select what touched them. The hope is these crafts are still touched with her love and care for you to enjoy today. Just one reason why Catherine will be missed.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Dimatro "Mike" and Jane (Balius) Worske; two brothers, Don and Delbert; two sisters, Fern Mitchem and Mary Moorhous; one grandson, Jeffery Brown.

Survivors include her husband, Vernon Mitchem of McCook; two daughters, Carolyn McNabb and husband, Bill of Denver, Colo., and Gloria Brown of McCook; two sons, Gerald and wife, Pat Mitchem of McCook; and James Mitchem of McCook; three sisters, Marsella Herbert of Palisade, Fay Appel and Charlotte Worske of Milwaukee, Wis.; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and many other relatives.

Memorials were to be given in her name.

Services were Thursday, September 30, 2004, 2 p.m., at Carpenter Breland Chapel with Pastor Hooten officiating. Burial took place in Memorial Park cemetery.

Carpenter Breland Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Pedro Monzon

Pedro “Pete” Monzon died Sunday, March 13, 2005, at Bryan LGH East Hospital in Lincoln. He was 78 years old.

Pete was born in McCook on April 29, 1926, to Jesus and Francisca (Melendez) Monzon. He graduated from McCook High School in 1947 and attended McCook College. He entered the US Navy on March 25, 1944, and served during World War II. He was honorably discharged on April 28, 1946.

On November 25, 1948, he married Bonnie Bee Fitzpatrick in McCook. To this union four sons were born. They made their home in McCook where Pete was employed as an engineer for the railroad. He retired on June 1, 1989.

He was a member of the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. He was a member of the Knight’s of Columbus, Fourth Degree, and Faithful Navigator Fourth Degree.

Pete worked for the Red Willow County Fair Grounds after his retirement. He volunteered many hours for the Toy Box and Coat Closet. He was the recipient of the Community Service Award in 1992.

Preceding him in death were his parents; one sister, Louise Taylor; one brother, Angel Monzon: and nephew Terry Monzon.

Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Monzon of McCook; four sons, Peter Monzon and friend, Jill, of North Platte, Richard Monzon of McCook, Timothy Monzon and wife, Ketty, of Missoula, MT, and Scott Monzon and wife, Terri, of Blair; two brothers, Joe “Peanuts” Monzon and wife, Brenda, of Centennial, CO and Victor “Chico” Monzon and wife, Mary Ellen, of McCook; two sisters, Jennie Jones of Cheyenne, WY and Mary and husband, Kent Seaman, of Mesa, AZ; 7 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials were to be given to the Fair Grounds Community Building Bench Fund.

Rosary was on Thursday, March 17, 2005, 7:00 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial took place Friday, March 18, 2005, 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Father Jerel Scholl officiating. Burial in Calvary cemetery with an Honorary Navy Military Committal.

David John Evans

David John Evans, 69, died Friday, July 8, 2005 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

He was born June 8, 1936 in Stratton to John R. and Clara Maime (Marquissee) Evans.
Dave grew up in Stratton and graduated from Stratton High School in 1953.

He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict.

He married Dorothy Lucille Smith on February 20, 1961 at Pierre, South Dakota.

They have three children, James John, Penny and Shannon.

David was a member of the Memorial United Methodist Church.

He worked as a salesman for the Frito-Lay for 35 years. He loved his children and grandchildren and trap shooting.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Cleo; and two sisters, Bonnie Bell (an infant) and Myrna Clifford.

Survivors include his wife Dorothy of McCook; son, James John Evans of McCook; two daughters, Penny Staley of Denver, CO and Shannon Woitaszewski and husband, Randy, of McCook; an aunt, Marianne Ogorzolka and husband, Don, of Indianola; six grandchildren, Shelby, Kelsey, Rebecca, Hali, John and Christian; one niece, Sherri and husband, Mark Uerling, of McCook; four nephews, Mark Clifford and wife, Deb, and Scott Clifford of Hayes Center, Bill Clifford and wife, Lesa, of Kearney and Dennis Clifford and wife, Jane, of Lincoln; cousins, Ron and Linda Gerdes of Spring, TX and Rod and Deb Gerdes of Horton, KS.

Memorials may be given to the Shriners Crippled Children’s Fund.

John E. Fidler

John Fidler passed away May 8, 2004 while vacationing in France with his wife Peggy.

He was born May 8, 1938 in Cambridge, Nebraska, beloved son of the late E.H. and Elizabeth Fidler. John held a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from Black Hills State University, a Masters’ Degree in microbiology from the University of Nebraska, and an MBA in Hospital Administration from the University of Florida.

John was a highly regarded healthcare professional who had an illustrious career in hospital administration in Florida, Missouri, California, and Arkansas. John strived to be of service to mankind throughout his career. Realizing the mission of the church-affiliated hospitals he led was his priority. John had a deep and abiding faith in God that sustained him and gave him purpose. He was a loving and devoted husband and father who remained involved and engaged in his family despite the grueling hours and myriad responsibilities of his position.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy (Burtch) Fidler and daughter, Christina Fidler of Palmdale, Calif.; brothers, Paul Fidler of Hastings, Jerry Fidler of Willows, Calif., and Ken Fidler of Deadwood, S.D.; sisters, Delores Groothuis of Kokomo, Ind., Winifred Rodarmel of Spearfish, S.D., Ernestine Reeves of Akron, Ohio and Judy Fidler of Deadwood, S.D.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Ray Fidler and Ronnie Fidler.

Those of us who knew him as brother, husband, father, and friend thank God for the blessing of having him in our lives.

Florence Berneice (McDowell) Fisher

Florence Berneice Fisher died Wednesday, April 13, 2005 at Decatur County Good Samaritan Center in Oberlin, Kansas. She was 79 years old.

Florence was born on December 16, 1925 at Trenton, Nebraska to Arthur and Lena (Hiatt) McDowell. She graduated from Trenton High School in 1944.

On October 31, 1944, she married Everett George Fisher. To this union three children were born. They made their home in McCook where Florence was a homemaker. They were owner/operators of Fisher’s Produce for many years. After they sold their business, Florence worked for Brown’s Shoe Fit for 12 years until her retirement. She had been living in Oberlin for the past ten years.

She was a member of the McCook Eagles and Veteran’s Auxiliary. She enjoyed traveling and dancing. Her greatest enjoyment came from her children and grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Arthur and Lena McDowell; and one sister Louise Ellis.

Survivors include her husband, Everett Fisher of Oberlin; one son, Harold Fisher and wife, Diane, of Culbertson; two daughters, Colleen Geihsler of Oberlin and Cheryl and husband, Dale Stewart, of Indianola; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given in her name.

Funeral service were Saturday, April 16, 2005, 11:00 a.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home with Jerry Beckenhauer officiating. Burial took place in Memorial Park cemetery.

Frances Marie (Sullivan) Flaherty

Frances Marie Flaherty died Friday, January 20, 2006 at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook. She was 88 years old.

She was born at Utica January 25, 1917 to John and Frances (Conway) Sullivan. She attended school in McCook.

She married Patrick Joseph Flaherty October 13, 1942 in McCook. To this union three children were born. They made their home for several years north of Indianola, then moved to the McCook area in 1947 and continued a lifetime in farming. She had lived at Hillcrest Nursing Home since 2002.

She worked at the snack bar at A&M; Drug Store now known as McCook Pharmacy. She also worked in the Dietary Department at St. Catherine’s Hospital. She gardened and was an avid sewer, making clothing and even sport jackets for her sons. She was known for making the best apple pie.

She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and Altar Society.

She was preceded in death by her mother at birth and her father and step-mother Clara (Wilson) Sullivan; her husband Patrick, December 2, 2004; and granddaughter, Kristi Flaherty.

Survivors include one daughter Jane and husband, Larry Peterson, of Denver, Colo; two sons, James Flaherty and wife, Fenella, of McCook and Lynn Flaherty and wife, Linda, of Holdrege; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Memorials are being accepted in her name.

Rosary was Monday at 7 p.m. at the Carpenter Breland Chapel.

Mass of Christian Burial was on Tuesday, 10 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in McCook with Father Gary Brethour officiating. Burial took place in Calvary cemetery.

Patrick Joseph Flaherty

Patrick Joseph Flaherty died Thursday, December 2, 2004, at Community Hospital in McCook. He was 86 years old.

Patrick was born on May 4, 1918, at Lawrence to John and Mary (Baune) Flaherty. He graduated from Indianola High School in 1936.

On October 13, 1942, he married Frances M. Sullivan at McCook. To this union three children were born. They made their home for several years north of Indianola, then moved to the McCook area in 1947 and continued in farming until the present time.

He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and a 58 year-plus member of the Knights of Columbus. Patrick was an avid Big Red Fan.

Preceding him in death were his parents, John and Mary Flaherty; one grand-daughter, Kristi Flaherty; three sisters, Ellen, Katherine and Mary Ann; and three brothers, John, Tom and Hank.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Flaherty of McCook; daughter, Jane and husband, Larry Peterson, of Denver, CO; two sons, James Flaherty and wife, Fenella, of McCook and Lynn Flaherty and wife, Linda, of Holdrege; two sisters, Nellie Patrick of Denver and Emma Lehn of Cozad; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Memorials may be given in his name.

Rosary was Sunday, December 5, 2004, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial was Monday, December 6, 2004, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Father Gary Brethour officiating. Burial took place in Calvary cemetery.

Marion Alberta (Pettit) Follett

Marion Alberta Follett of McCook, died Friday, April 29, 2005, at McCook Community Hospital. She was 78 years old.

Marion was born on November 11, 1926, at Bird City, Kansas to Frank H.L. and Hertha Rose Pettit. She attended Baker Rural School.

On March 18, 1949, she married George Warren Follett at Beaver City, Nebraska. To this union two sons were born. They moved to McCook in 1956, where Marion was a homemaker and worked in housekeeping at Hillcrest Nursing Home.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, George; one son Michael Patrick Follett; two brothers, Lloyd and Sylvester Pettit; and infant sister Mary Lou Pettit.

Marion was a member of the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. She enjoyed cross-word puzzles, reading, embroidering and crocheting in her spare time. She was living at Hillcrest Nursing Home at the time of her death.

Survivors include one son, Rodney Follett of Omaha; one grandson, Michael Eugene Follett of Columbus; and great-granddaughter, Ashlynn Follett of Columbus.

Memorials may be given in her name.

Funeral Services were Monday, May 2, 2005, at Carpenter Breland Chapel with Pastor Clark Bates officiating. Burial took place at the Benkleman cemetery.

Henry Mathias Fossen

Henry “Hank” Mathias Fossen died Monday, April 10, 2006, at Hillcrest Nursing Home, he was 92.

He was born May 16, 1913 to Peter and Jennie (Keegan) Fossen in Red Willow County.

He married Pauline Stritt on October 17, 1945 in Indianola. To this union four children were born, Kenneth, Clarence, Larry, and Marcia. He farmed northeast of Indianola until 1985, when they moved into Indianola.

He was a member of St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Indianola and the Knights of Columbus.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline; his parents, Peter and Jennie; three brothers, Charles, Clarence, and Carl; son-in-law, Jeff Sughroue; and daughter-in-law Lavon Fossen.

Survivors include his sons, Kenneth Fossen and wife, Connie of Omaha, Clarence ”Topper”, of Indianola, and Larry Fossen and wife, Jill of Chaska, Minn; daughter, Marcia Sughroue of Indianola; brother, Leo Fossen of Sarasota, Fl; sister, Helen Walker of Bristol, IN; eight grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Memorials can be given in his name.

Rosary was April 12, 2006 at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church, with the Funeral Mass following. Funeral services were Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church with Father Paul Witt officiating.

Burial took place in St. Catherine’s cemetery in Indianola.

Carpenter Breland Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
