Opal Pearl (Seals) Gillen

Opal Pearl Gillen, 89, died Thursday, March 10, 2005 at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook.

On October 26, 1915 she was born in Edgar to George and Margaret Seals. She was raised in the area and graduated in 1933 from Havana High School.

She went to teachers college in Lincoln and taught for two years.

She married Lloyd Gillen August 3, 1936 in Indianola. They lived in McCook all their married lives. Lloyd died in 1986.

Opal worked at Komac Paint for 19 years. She enjoyed her yard and flowers, crocheting, ceramics and reading.

She is survived by two children, Roger C. Gillen and wife Cynthia of Littleton, Colorado; a daughter Marilyn K. Haith and special friend Ronald Ruhe of Grand Island; a brother, Alfred Seals and wife Wanda of McCook; a sister Bonnie David and husband Earl of Pendleton, Oregon; seven grandchildren, Brian, Lori, Craig, Cindy, David, Martin & Michael; and eight great-grandchildren, Ross, Ashley, Zach, Audrey, Amber, Austin, T.J. and Drew.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Lloyd in 1986; a brother Archie and three sisters, Leota, Georgia and Dorothy.

She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.

Memorials were accepted in her name.

Rosary was Tuesday at 7 p.m at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial was Wednesday, February 16, 2005 at 10 a.m. at St. Pat’s Catholic Church with Father Gary Brethour officiating. Burial was in Calvary cemetery.

Carpenter Breland Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Alfred Glaves, Jr.

Alfred Glaves, Jr., of McCook, died Saturday, February 11, 2006, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. He was 88 years old.

Alfred was born on March 28, 1917, in Sheffield, England to Alfred and Selina (Twibelle) Glaves, Sr. At the age of 13 he and his parents came to the United States and settled on the East Coast. They later moved to the Chicago area. Alfred received his high school education through North America Correspondence.

On February 28, 1948, he married Loretta Ann Loomis. They lived for a time near Chicago until moving to Colorado Springs where they were owners and operators of Boulder Street Laundry. Alfred retired in 1969 and Loretta continued to run the business until 1983. They moved to the western slope for some time before moving to North Platte in 1991. In 2001, they moved to their current home in McCook.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Alfred and Selina Glaves and one brother, Ronald Glaves.

Survivors include his wife, Loretta Glaves of McCook and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials were to be given in his name.

Funeral services were in Libertyville, IL.

Carpenter Breland Funeral Home of McCook was in charge of the local arrangements; Burnett-Dane Funeral Home of Libertyville, IL was in charge of Illinois arrangements.

Victor Milton Glick

Victor Milton Glick died Friday, May 14, 2004, at his home in McCook. He was 72 years old.

Victor was born on June 20, 1931, at Ringgold County, Iowa to Milton Dority and Pearl Racheal (Fanning) Glick. He attended school in Ellston, Iowa.

On October 20, 1951, he entered the US Navy and served during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged on October 14, 1955.

In 1974, he came to the McCook community where he was employed by Western Engineering. He was a dirt foreman for over 30 years until his health required him to retire. He was a life-time member of the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars and McCook Eagles. He enjoyed gardening and spending time with his friends.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his five brothers, Dallas, Louis, Elmer, Haymond and Donald Glick; and three sisters, Alberta Glick, Emma Jean Summerville and Mary Gross.

Survivors include his sister, Shirley Glick of Apache Junction, AZ; numerous nieces and nephews; and good friend, James “Smitty” Smith and his wife, Karen, of McCook; and special little girls, Tesia & Josie Florom of McCook.

Memorials were to be given in his name.

Memorial services took place Wednesday, May 19, 2004, 2:00 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Chapel with Jerry Beckenhauer officiating. Inurnment took place at Memorial Park cemetery.

Marilyn R. (Wesch) Goltl

Marilyn R. Goltl, 71, died Wednesday, February 2, 2005 at her home in McCook.

On January 25, 1934 she was born in Red Willow County to Charles August and Nellie Pearl (Crocker) Wesch. She graduated from McCook High School in 1952 and had lived here all her life.

She married Ralph V. Goltl in Ft. Belvore, VA on August 28, 1953.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one grandson, Nathan Rouse.

Survivors include: her husband Ralph of McCook; a son, Steven R. Goltl and wife Mary of Ft. Worth, TX; a daughter, Sherri L. Hanak and husband John of Aurora, Colo. two brothers, Lloyd C. Wesch and wife Carmen and Floyd H. Wesch and wife Joanne both of McCook; a sister, Elsie M. O’Dea of McCook; two grandchildren, Justin Rouse of Ft. Worth, Texas and Nicole Morris and husband Shane of Ft. Collins, Colo.; and two great-grandchildren, Hailey and Landon Morris of Ft. Collins, Colo.; and many special nieces and nephews and long-time friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials were accepted in her name.

A private family memorial service was held at a later date with inurnment in Memorial Park cemetery.

Shirley Ann (Follett) Grabast

Shirley Ann Grabast, 72, of Palisade, died Sunday, March 19, 2006 at Cambridge Hospital as a result of car accident.

She was born on August 1, 1933, at the family farm in Palisade, to Floyd F. and Ann (Dudek) Follett. She attended Palisade Public Schools.

Shirley was united in marriage to Gary Grabast on July 29, 1971 in Trenton. He preceded her in death in 1992.

She was employed as a secretary for Southwest Public Power for several years. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post #318, Palisade City Council, Children’s Reading Program and Community Service Club.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Floyd and Ann Follett; her husband, Gary Grabast; and two brothers, Don and Ralph Follett.

Survivors include her three sons, Ronald Decker and wife, Barbara, of Garden City, KS, Dennis L. Decker and wife, Becky, of McCook and Douglas Decker and wife, Janet, of Ringwood, NJ; one daughter, Kathie and husband, Drew Connell, of Holt, MO; step-son, Dennis Grabast and wife, Hayley, of Lincoln; two sisters, Mary L. Post and Eva Pezza both of Palisade; 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Memorials were to be given in her name.

Funeral services were Saturday, March 25, 2006, 11:00 a.m. at the Palisade United Methodist Church with Rev. Judy Dye officiating. Burial took place in the Palisade cemetery.

Harlan D. Grafel

Harlan D. Grafel was born Oct. 17, 1924, in Hitchcock County, Nebraska, to August P. and Mary (Wolfram) Grafel. He died July 20, 2005, from injuries suffered in a car accident.

Harlan graduated from Herndon High School in 1942. He was drafted into the U. S. Army in 1944 and served his country during WW II in Okinawa. After being discharged from the service, Harlan farmed south of Culbertson, NE with his three brothers and worked in the oil field until 1965, when he began a bulk oil, fuel, and fertilizer business in Herndon, KS. He then opened a plumbing shop in Herndon and had been retired the last several years. He and his wife, Norma, had moved into Herndon, but Harlan often went out to the farm to check cattle or spray thistles, and, hopefully, find chokecherries for Norma’s infamous jelly. He was an avid collector of guns and antique wrenches.

Harlan and Norma M. Crocker were married Oct. 25, 1947. They had two children, Richard and Sheila.

Harlan was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Harry, of Trenton, NE and one sister, Grace Dack, of McCook, NE.

Survivors include his wife, Norma, of Herndon, KS; his son, Rich, of rural Oberlin, KS; his daughter, Sheila Marney, and husband, Greg, of Rossville, KS; his brothers: Ray and his wife, Barbara, of rural McCook; Elmore, and wife, Beverley, of rural Culbertson; three sisters: Gladys Crocker of McCook; Beaulah Brown, of Ft. Morgan, CO; Donna Hoxie and husband, Ted, of Lincoln, NE; four grandchildren: Dan Grafel and his wife, Melinda, of rural Oberlin; Greg Grafel and his wife, Amanda, of rural Oberlin; Jayson Wylie of Costilla, NM; and Jennifer Marney, of Topeka, KS; seven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services were held Saturday, July 23rd, at Republican Valley Event Center (Old Elks Building) in McCook, NE.

In lieu of flowers, memorials were to be given to the Herndon City Fire Department.

Orvil D. Gray

Orvil D. Gray died Friday (May 20, 2005) at McCook Community Hospital in McCook. He was 76 years old.

Orvil was born on November 23, 1928, to David A. and Zula M. (Ayers) Gray in Culbertson. He graduated from Culbertson High School in 1947 and attended 31/2 years of college.

On June 1, 1957, he married Clara J. Rose in McCook. They lived on a farm in the Culbertson community all their married life. He was living at Hillcrest Nursing Home at the time of his death.

He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in McCook. In his free time he loved working in his garden.

He was preceded in death by his parents, David and Zula Gray; his wife, Clara J. Gray on June 11, 1996; one brother Edward Gray; and two sisters Velma Pollman and Lula M. Wilson.

Survivors include sister-in-law Catherine Rose of McCook, and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials were to be given in his name to the Culbertson Ambulance fund or to Hillcrest Nursing Home.

Rosary took place Sunday, May 22, 2005 at 6:30 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home. Mass of Christian burial was Monday, May 23, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Father Jerel Scholl officiating.

Burial took place in the Culbertson cemetery in Culbertson.

Carpenter Breland Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Jessie O. (Markwad) Greene

Jessie O. Greene passed away Friday, September 17, 2004 at the Cheyenne Health Care Nursing Home in Cheyenne, WY after being a life-long resident of McCook.

She was born May 28, 1914, to Ernest and Iva (Smith) Markwad. She graduated from McCook High School and McCook Junior College. On June 11, 1935, she married Robert Earl Greene. To this union three children were born.

Jessie’s career consisted of being a school teacher at District #8, and an employee of Red Willow County and McCook National Bank. She was also a homemaker, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a member of the Hospital Auxiliary, Federated Women’s Club and Memorial United Methodist Church.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Robert; one brother, Darwin Markwad and sister, Cleo Wendt.

She is survived by her son, Bob and his wife, Donna, of Centennial, CO and grandson, Douglas and great-grandsons Jackson and Connor, grandson, Randall and his wife, Melissa, and three great-grandchildren, Daniel, Emily and Justin; her daughter, Cherryl Thill of Centennial and granddaughter Ann Pullen and husband, Walt, and great-grandson Michael, granddaughter, Sue Gallegos and husband, Rod, and two great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Kathryn and grandson William Thill; and son, William and his wife, Donna, of Cheyenne and three grandchildren, Christopher and Andrea, Melissa, Jeremy and wife, Sarah.

Memorials were to be given in her name to the Community Hospital Auxiliary.

Funeral services were Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, 10:00 a.m., at Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Jeff Thurman officiating. Burial took place in Memorial Park cemetery.

Carpenter Breland Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Marvin Dean Greenlee

Marvin Dean Greenlee, 69 of McCook, died Sunday, December 5, 2004 at Community Hospital.

He was born October 18, 1935 to Marion Grant and Marjorie Gladys (Hall) Greenlee at Stockville. He graduated from Red Willow High School on May 13, 1954.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict 1956-1962.

He spent his lifetime living in the McCook area. He worked for Parker-Hannifen (formally Dayco) for 31 years.

On July 9, 1961 he married Sandra Hoff in McCook. To this union one daughter, Paris, was born. Sandra died November 28, 1986.

He married Marlene M. Junge on June 17, 1988 at Imperial.

He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church and a lifetime member of the VFW Post 1652.

He was preceded in death by his parents; is wife Sandra; three brothers, Gerald, Dennis and Gary; and one sister, Janet Porter.

Survivors include: wife, Marlene; daughter Paris Province and husband Rick of McCook; four step-children, Max Kaiser and wife Joni of Imperial; Alan Kaiser and wife Tami of Lincoln, Boyd Kaiser and wife Deb of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Gary Kaiser and wife Stacy of Sargent Bluff, Iowa; one brother, Oren Greenlee and wife Judy of Indianola; two sisters, Marilyn Unger and husband Ed of McCook; Janice Kelsey and husband Steve of McCook; two grandchildren; and 10 step-grandchildren.

Memorials were tp be given in his name to KNGN Radio Station or the American Cancer Society.

Funeral services were at Peace Lutheran Church, Thursday, December 9th, at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Randy Wahl officiating. Burial took place in Riverview cemetery.
