Evelyn Sharp

Evelyn Sharp, 92, of Gering, formerly of Harrisburg, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2004 at Regional West Medical Center. Graveside services were Friday, Oct. 29 at Oregon Trail Memorial cemetery in Bridgeport with Rev. Joan Phillips officiating.

A memorial has been established to Cancer Treatment Center/Cancer Survivors at Regional West Medical Center. Cremation was held at Sunset Memorial Park Crematory. Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel in Scottsbluff is in charge of the arrangements. Tributes of sympathy may be left at www.dugankramer.com.

Evelyn was born Nov. 22, 1911, in McCook, Neb. to Isaac Aaron and Icel May (Boyd) Underhill. She married Daniel Arthur Sharp on Jan. 25, 1934 in Harrisburg, Neb.

She is survived by three sons, a daughter, seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and a nephew.

Her husband and three sisters preceded her in death.

Thomas Rutz

Thomas M. Rutz, 59, of Lincoln, Neb., a Kimball High School graduate, died Sunday, October 31, 2004 in Lincoln. Metcalf Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

He was born April 5, 1945 in Scottsbluff, Neb. to Herman and Helen (Zier) Rutz. He was a career Lincoln Public Middle School Teacher.

Tom enjoyed managing his rental properties and was an avid athlete, dedicated Husker fan and health enthusiast. He was a member of the Nebraska Softball Hall of Fame, Lincoln Track Club, Husker Power Club, and a deeply faithful member of Hope Community Church. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, teacher, coach and friend.

His family includes: wife, Linda; daughters and sons-in-law, Sheila and Tim Svoboda, Julie and Jordan Wondercheck, of Lincoln; son, Scott “Rocky” Rutz, Lincoln; grandsons Thomas and Dylan Svoboda; brothers and sisters-in-law Tim and Nancy Rutz of Texas, and Herb and Kathi Rutz of Ohio; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Helen Knaub-Rutz; and father- and mother in-law, Ed and Bettyann Robinson.

A Memorial service is Nov. 4, 4 p.m., at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church. Memorials may be given in care of the family to Hope Community Church, MDA-ALS Research, or Lincoln Public Schools Foundation. Condolences or personal reflections may be left online at www.MetcalfFH.com.

Charlotte Gross

Charlotte Emily Gross, age 95, died on Friday, October 29, 2004 at the Kimball County Manor. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be Nov. 9, 10:30 a.m. at the Kimball County Manor Chapel with Pastor Dwayne Hunzeker officiating. Burial will follow in the Kimball cemetery. Cantrell Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Charlotte was born on April 9, 1909 to Henry and Hattie (Kliese) Gross in Lincoln, Neb.She graduated from Kimball High School and began teaching school. During the summers she attended and graduated from Kearny State College. She continued to teach and eventually earned her Masters Degree in Elementary Education from Colorado State Teacher’s College in Greeley, Colo. She moved to Denver where she taught at several elementary and junior high schools. During the 1980s, Charlotte moved to Kimball to be closer to her brothers.

She is survived by her nieces, Elizabeth and husband Don Shandera of Kimball, Catherine Joska of Kimball, Lois and husband Melvin Fornstrom of Pine Bluffs, Wyo., Charlotte and husband Warren VanMeter of Reedsville, Ohio; and a nephew Frank and wife Helen Janesofsky.

Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Mildred Janesofsky, and brothers Henry, Raymond, and Carl Gross.

Eldora Morby

Eldora Morby, 84, of Kennewick, Wash., formerly of Harrisburg, Neb., died September 29, 2004 at Kennewick General Hospital. Funeral services were Oct. 4 and interment followed at Desert Lawn Memorial Park in Kennewick.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Tri-City Chaplaincy Hostle House, 2108 W. Entait Ave., Kennewick, WA 99336.

Eldora was born Feb. 17, 1920 in Harrisburg to Winfred W. and Florence (Wynne) Downer and grew up on the family farm. She married John Leper Morby of Bushnell on Dec. 3, 1940 at First Methodist Church in Ogden, Utah.

While raising her children, she served as Camp Fire Leader, baseball mom, and Sunday school teacher. She belonged to the Wesleyans at the First United Methodist Church, Rebekkah Lodge #182, and the Sears Retirees Assoc. She also worked in the audit department of Sears for 20 years.

She enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as children were a great joy to her.

Eldora is survived by daughter Margie (Larry) Garner; son Charles W. Morby (Connie); sister Dorothy (Eugene) Smith of Hawk Springs, Wyo.; sister-in-law Mary Downer of Littleton, Colo.; daughter Colleen McCarthy; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and brothers Robert W. and John A. Downer.

Iola T. Larsen

Iola Tracy Larsen, age 93, died on Saturday, October 23, 2004 at the Kimball County Manor. Funeral services were held on October 26 at the Cantrell Funeral Home. Pastor Ron Nuss-Warren officiated. Burial followed in the Kimball cemetery. If friends wish, memorial gifts may be made to the Kimball Masonic Hall for the carpet fund in care of the family. Cantrell Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Iola was born July 22, 1911 to P. J. and Ione (Maus) Tracy at Wood River, Neb. In 1917 she moved to Kimball and graduated from Kimball County High School in 1929. On May 2, 1934 she married Delmar Larsen and together they operated Larsen’s Jewelry Store until she retired in 1983.

She was a member of the Kimball Presbyterian Church, a 50-year member and Past Matron of Truth Chapter #262 Order of the Eastern Star, a Past Guardian and Past Honored Queen of Bethel 12 International Order of Jobs Daughters.

Mrs. Larsen is survived by her daughter Karen Robinson and husband Jim; grandson Greg Robinson and wife Nora, granddaughter Carla Goranson and husband Dennis, all of Kimball; great-grandchildren Matthew and Stuart Goranson, and Stephanie, Katherine, Anthony and Michael Robinson.

She was preceded in death by her husband Delmar on June 21, 1981.

Marcia E. Terman

Marcia E. Terman, 96, of Gering, formerly of Potter, Neb., died Saturday morning, October 23, 2004 at Northfield Villa Medical Center in Gering.

Funeral services were held on October 27 in the United Methodist Church in Potter with Pastors Mary Frohs and Roger Gillming officiating. Burial followed in the Potter cemetery. Friends called on October 26 at the Holechek Funeral Home in Sidney.

Memorials may be made to the Potter United Methodist Church or the Northfield Villa Medical Center.

Marcia E. Terman was born October 27, 1907 at Hildreth, Neb., the daughter of Elba and Helene (Cantor) Hadley. When she was a child, her family moved to a farm south of Potter. Marcia attended Potter High School. On September 6, 1926, she was united in marriage to Guy Terman in Sterling, Colo. He preceded her in death on November 19, 1973.

Survivors include two daughters, Bonnie Mihevic and husband Al of Denver, Colo., and Dee Killham and husband Ed of Kimball, Neb.; five grandchildren: Susan Pasek and husband Gerry of Denver, Colo., Marcia Joiner and husband Larry of El Dorado Hills, Calif.; Dallen Juelfs and wife Dode of Casper, Wyo., Julie Juelfs of Fairbanks, Alaska; and Lori Dent and husband Steve of North Platte, Neb.; eleven great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and sister Burnace Hadley.

Charles Droll

Charles W. "Bud" Droll, age 75, of Ainsworth, Iowa, died October l8, 2004 at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City following a brief illness. He is the father of Bev Skovgard of Kimball, Neb.

Funeral services were Oct. 23 in Ainsworth. Memorials have been established for the Ainsworth Volunteer Fire Department/First Responders or the Ainsworth Opera House.

Bud was born June 8, 1929 in Richmond, Iowa the son of Lawrence C. and Agnes Julia (Wulf) Droll.

Esther Richards

Esther M. Richards, 82, of Gering, formerly of Banner County., Neb., died Sunday, Oct. 24, 2004, at her home. A Mass of Christian Burial is Oct. 28, 10 a.m., at Christ the King Catholic Church in Gering with Father Gerald Harr officiating. Interment will be at Fairview cemetery in Scottsbluff. Memorials have been established to the church or Special Olympics. Tributes of sympathy may be left at www.geringchapel.com.

Esther was born July 18, 1922, in Banner County to Christian and Victoria M. (Wemhoff) Greisen. She graduated from Banner County High School ad received her associate’s degree at the Scottsbluff Junior College. She taught at a country school in Banner County. She married Claude Richards on April 1, 1946 in Scottsbluff.

She is survived by six children, one sister, six grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and five step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, an infant daughter, her parents, and 11 brothers and sisters.

Ray Gerold Medbery

Ray Gerold Medbery, 91, of Scottsbluff, died Tuesday, October 26, 2004 at West Nebraska Veteran’s Home in Scottsbluff. He is the stepfather of Elnora (Tom) Culek of Kimball.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Monday, Nov. 1 at Bethel Baptist Church in Scottsbluff with Pastor Jim Garrett officiating. Cremation will be held at Sunset Memorial Park with inurnment in the Kimball cemetery.

Friends may call at Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel Saturday and Sunday between 1-6 p.m.

Walter Doremus.

Walter Doremus, 83, of Kimball, died October 26, 2004. Funeral services will be Thursday, Oct. 28, 2 p.m., at Dugan-Kramer Funeral Home, Scottsbluff, 632-4101. Burial will be in Westlawn cemetery, Gering.

Jim F. Robinson

Jim Forrest Robinson, 28, of Swink, Colo., formerly of Bushnell, died in Otero County, Colorado. A memorial service was held Sunday, Oct. 17, 2004 at the Cantrell Funeral Home of Kimball with Pastor Don Blomberg of the Albin Baptist Church officiating. Cremation took place. If friends wish, memorial gifts may be made to the Jim Robinson Memorial Fund in care of the family.

He was born October 16, 1975 in Greeley, Colo., a son of Albert and Carol (Isanhart) Robinson. He lived in the Kimball area for a number of years and graduated from Kimball High School in 1994. He had just recently moved to Swink, Colo. Jim was a derrick hand in the oil fields and had worked in Colorado, Nebraska, and Wyoming. He enjoyed mechanical work and was an avid fisherman and rock collector.

He is survived by his mother Carol Robinson and father Albert Robinson, both of Bushnell; a daughter Breanna Lundgren of Kimball; brother Albert Robinson of Kingston, Idaho; three sisters, Diana Chamberlain of Marion, Mich., Lillian Tarnnowski of Kimball, and Rebecca Le of Chelsey, Mass. Also surviving are 11 nieces and nephews and seven great nieces and nephews.

J. Frances Sumner

Julia Frances Sumner, 90, of Kimball, died at the Kimball County Manor on Friday, October 1, 2004. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, October 5, 2004 at the chapel of the Kimball Manor. Pastor Roger Gillming will officiate. Burial will follow in the Kimball cemetery. If friends wish memorial gifts may be made to Kimball Manor. The Cantrell Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

She was born July 14, 1914 on the family homestead at Sidney Draw, (south of Sidney NE), a daughter of Edward A. and Blanche (Hyatt) Selover. Mr. Selover had several relatives who arrived in America aboard the Mayflower. Francis graduated from the Kimball County High School and taught for a time at the one room school in District 25. She married Robert E. Sumner on December 27, 1938 in Denver, Colo. The couple moved to Hemingford in 1946 where they owned and operated a Gamble’s store. In 1950 they moved to Scottsbluff where they lived for many years. They also lived in Sidney, North Platte, and Denver before returning to live in Kimball in 1976.

Mrs. Sumner was a member of Trinity Methodist Church and was very active with the Kimball Sr. Friendship Center. She especially enjoyed quilting with the other Center members. She was a charter member of the South Divide Extension Club. She was also a licensed cosmetologist and at one time operated a business out of her home.

She is survived by two daughters, Janet and husband Fred Gerhardt of Kingston, Mich. and Judy and husband Dan Gudahl of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a son, Edward Sumner of Denver, Colo.; a sister Helen Grubb, a lifelong resident of Kimball now living in Portland, Ore.; a brother, Marion Selover of Payette, Idaho; nine grandchildren, Kristian, Jenille, Karen, Alice, Sarah, Robert Edward, Dena D., Robert Payne-Sumner, and Brian; and 12 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert on October 22, 1998, a sister, Maxine Sohus, grandson Aaron Gundahl and daughter-in-law Linda Sumner.

Naomi Lowman

Naomi Yolanda Lowman, 71, of Cody, Wyo., formerly of Kimball, died on September 26, 2004 after a 32 year battle with cancer.

Naomi was born August 28, 1933, in Kimball, Neb., the daughter of Clifford and Elvira Allchin. She was baptized into the Christian faith Jan. 27, 1935, and was confirmed in her baptism vow and faith at the Lutheran Church, Oak Harbor, Wash. in July, 1958.

Her family moved to Lamar, Mo., where she graduated from Lamar High School in 1951. She married her high school sweetheart, John Allison Lowman, on May 27, 1951 in the Methodist Church. They moved back to her home town of Kimball, Neb. and lived there from August 1951-1955. They later lived in Washington, Mitchell, Neb., and various towns in Wyoming.

Naomi loved to work in her garden, camping, fishing, reading, working with her many crafts, cooking for family and friends, and was always willing to give a helping hand. She had a deep devotion to her faith and was never short on love for her husband, children, and grandchildren. She was a "Camp Fire Girls" leader, a member of the Missouri Synod Lutheran Church, secretary of the Voters' Association of Our Savior Lutheran Church, a bus driver in Wyoming, and a nurse aide in Torrington, Wyo., and Scottsbluff, Neb. She worked as a food nutritionist for the University of Wyoming. She belonged to Garden Clubs in Wyoming and was a lifetime member of the VFW. She was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church in Cody.

Naomi was preceded in death by her parents, Clifford John and Elvira Mae Allchin; sisters Helen Vercimak, Dorothy Wilcox, Ruth Matalainen, and Alberta Pilcher; a daughter, Debra Jean Kissel; and a grandson, Jeremiah John Spitzer.

She is survived by her husband, John Allison Lowman, a sister, Joyce (Walt) Witt of Kimball, Neb., children Katherine (Dale) Englund of Cody, Wyo., Dana (Dave) Breeden of Ft. Laramie, Wyo., John C. Lowman of Casper Wyo., and Cheryl (Terry) Lapp of Torrington, Wyo; grandchildren, Nathan (Tine) Spitzer, Joanna and Christina Kissel, Denise (Jim) Canipe, Bobby (Nida) Breeden, Aaron K. Lowman, Chastity Lapp, Michelle (Scott) Hashman, and Angela (Jimmy) Brothwell; eleven great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Dennis Staehr

The brother of Keith (Cynthe) Staehr of Kimball, Dennis Henry Staehr, age 65, York, Neb., died Sunday, Sept. 19, 2004 as a result of an automobile accident south of Waco, Neb. He was born Jan. 26, 1939 at Waco, to Alfred and Grace (Dey) Staehr. He was baptized on Feb. 10, 1939.

Dennis is survived by his wife, 3 sons, 4 grandsons, 7 brothers, 3 sisters, many nieces and nephews, his mother-in-law and brother-in-law .

Preceding him in death were his parents, 2 sisters, father-in-law, 2 brothers-in-laws, and a nephew.

Dorothy Hilkemeier

Dorothy O. Hilkemeier, 88, of Kimball died at the Kimball County Manor on Sat., October 2, 2004.

Funeral Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thurs., Oct. 7 at St. John’s Lutheran Church. astor Bradley Heinecke and Vicar Earl Brown will officiate. Burial will follow in the Kimball cemetery.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Dorothy Hilkemeier memorial fund. Cantrell Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.

Dorothy was born on Dec. 20, 1915 in Butka, Neb. to Ernest and Susan (Hieter) Schroder. She attended school through the 8th grade at O’Neill, before transferring and graduating high school in Atkinson, Neb..

On Nov. 22, 1933 she was joined in marriage to Fred W. Hilkemeier in Butka. They moved to Stewart, Neb. and then to Kimball in 1946 where she lived in the same house until moving to the manor in August 2000.

Mr. Hilkemeier was a mechanic and Dorothy operated a Daycare in her home for many families in Kimball. She also cooked for Purd Moul at his restaurant.

Mrs. Hilkemeier was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church where she and her husband were very active, and a member of the Ladies Aid.

She is survived by three sons Virgil and wife Barbara Hilkemeier of Moorcroft, Wyo., Donald and wife Joan Hilkemeier of Kimball, and Lyle and wife Anita Hilkemeier of Colorado Springs, Colo; daughter Margery and husband Carl Higdon of Marble Falls, Tex; 15 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband in Dec. 28, 1989; her parents; three brothers and one grandson.
