James E. Harris, 67

(Apr. 16) GORDON - James E. Harris, 67, of Gordon died Friday, April 13, 2001, at his home in Gordon. He was born on Aug. 16, 1933, at Gordon. His parents were Walter and Thelma (Boyles) Harris.

He married Linda Lutz in 1982 at Covina, Calif. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy, Korean Conflict, and an avid fisherman. He worked as a production manager in copper fabrication in California. He and his wife returned to Gordon in May of 1988.

He is survived by his wife Linda of the home; three sons, James Harris of Azusa, Calif., Jack Harris of Trophy Club, Texas, and Darell Harris of Rialto, Calif.; two daughters, Debbie Norman 0f Vancouver, Wash., and JoAnn Blaauw of Rialto, Calif.; two step-daughters, Sherri McGeorge of Gordon and Melissa Falls of Covina, Calif.; 17 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He also is survived by one brother, Jack Harris of Gordon.

Mr. Harris' memorial service will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday, April 18, at the Cicmanec-Pier Chapel at Gordon, with Rev. Vonne Blessman Andersen officiating. A memorial has been established for the Niobrara Sportsmen's Club. Contributions may be sent to Community Girst Bank, P. O. Box 250, Gordon, NE 69343. Cicmanec-Pier Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Frances Leah Noble, 85

(Apr. 16) CHADRON - Frances Leah Noble died Friday, April 13, 2001, at Chadron. She was born March 7, 1916 in Sheridan County. Her parents were J. William and Edna E. (Myers) Binger.

Her husband, Buford Noble, preceded her in death. She was active in RSVP, church birthday parties and ladies Bible study.

She is survived by one daughter, Janice Wohlers of Hemingford; one son, Harold Noble of Chadron; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She also is survived by one brother, Bruce Binger of Hay Springs.

Mrs. Noble's funeral will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, April 17 at Chamberlain Chapel, with Pastor Allan Schmidt officiating. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery. A memorial has been established to the Chadron Fire and Rescue Unit or Immanuel Lutheran Church. Donations may be sent to Community First Bank at Chadron. Chamberlain Chapel of Chadron is in charge of arrangements.

Dave Schwindt, 78

(April 17) ALLIANCE - Dave Schwindt, 78, died Tuesday, April 15, 2003, at his home surrounded by his wife and family. He was born May 19, 1024, at Bayard, to Caroline (Reifschneider) and Henry Schwindt. The youngest of 11 children, he was raised on the family farm and graduated from Bayard High School in 1942.

After graduation, he moved to Alliance where he began working for the Franklin Serum Company. In 1973, he moved with the company to Denver, Colo., and later to Fort Dodge, Iowa. He worked for Franklin for 46 years until his retirement in 1989. He married Harriet "Tug" Archer on May 4, 1947. The marriage of 55 years produced three children, daughters, Stephanie and Judith, and a son, David. He loved his family and friends, and spent quality moments with those he loved. He was an avid golfer, and when the sun was shining, he could be seen on the course daily trying to improve his game. Cloudy days were spent puttering around the house and yard, or with his newly found hobby of woodcarving. He loved to laugh and tease those he cared for most, and enjoyed life to the fullest. He was a lifetime member of the Elks and a member of the Panhandle Men's Club. He is survived by his wife, Tug, of the home; children, Stephanie McCawley of Douglas, Wyo., Judy (Jim) Reynolds of Alliance, and David Schwindt of Jackson, Wyo.; grandchildren, TJ (Jill) McCawley of Longmont, Colo., Genia (Cary) Bone of Casper, Wyo., Erin McCawley of Minneapolis, Minn., Ryan "Chip" Reynolds of Alliance, and Tommy (Tammy) Reynolds of Denver, Colo.; and great-grandchildren, Trevor and Austin Bone of Casper, and Brendon and Dawson McCawley of Longmont. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Henry, Carl and Fred; and sisters, Katie, Susie, Amy, Caroline, Leah, Molly and Emma.

He and his wife have chosen cremation so their ashes may be scattered together. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 7, at Bates-Gould Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to Skyview Golf Course at Alliance, Prairie Haven Hospice or a charity of the donor's choice.

Beulah Nelson, 82

(Apr 18) BINGHAM - Beulah Nelson, 82, formally of Bingham, Neb., died Sunday, April 15, at Hallmark Manor Health Care Center in Federal Way, Wash. She was born May 24, 1918, at Bingham.

Her parents were James and Estes (Devasher) Burton. She was married to Roy Keith Nelson on March 30, 1938. Mr. Nelson preceded her in death in 2000. She was a homemaker, and enjoyed sewing and the ocean. She had moved to Seattle, Wash., a year ago.

She is survived by her daughter, Carol Tamparo of Seattle, Wash.; two granddaughters; and three great-granddaughters. She also is survived by her sister, Edith Wilkins of Sun Valley, Nev.

Mrs. Nelson's graveside funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday, April 20, at Mountain View Cemetery in Auburn, Wash. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. Thursday at Yahn & Sons Funeral Home, Auburn, Wash. Memorials may be made to donor's local Humane Society.

Clara Buckley, 87

(Apr 18) CRAWFORD - Clara Buckley, 87, died Tuesday, April 17, 2001 at Ponderosa Villa. She was born on Sept. 11, 1913, at Campbell, Nebr.

Her parents were H. Peter and Caroline (Arnold) Einspahr. The family moved to the Sand Hills south of Ainsworth, where she grew up. She graduated from Sioux County High School at Harrison in 1932. After passing her teacher's examinations, she taught at District No. 48 in Sioux County for two years.

She was married to Dick A. Buckley on May 24, 1934 at Chadron. Mr. Buckley preceded her in death in 1978. The couple resided in Sioux County for 40 years before moving to Lusk, Wyo. In 1975. She has been a resident of Crawford since 1979. She served on the boards of School District Nos. 52 and 12 for many years, and was a member of the Log Cabin Extension Club. She also was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, LWML, Bible Study Group, Crawford Women's Club, Crawford Senior Citizens Center, RSVP, War Dads, Sewing Club and Bridge Club.

She is survived by five daughters, Delilah Flaherty of Hemingford, Anna Marie Reece of Crawford, Mildred Lewis of Lusk, Wyo., Alberta Anderson of San Lorenzo, Calif., and Vicki Ring of Torrington, Wyo.; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. She also is survived by one sister, Lydia Schmitt of Hastings.

Mrs. Buckley's funeral will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, April 21, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, with Pastor James Martin officiating. Memorials have been established for Bethlehem Lutheran Church, American Cancer Society, or Crawford Senior Citizen Center. Donations may be sent to Security First Bank at Crawford. Chamberlain Chapel of Crawford is in charge of arrangements.

Opal I. Pettipiece, 90

(Apr. 19) CRAWFORD - Opal I. Pettipiece, 90, died Wednesday, April 18, 2001, at Ponderosa villa. She was born July 6, 1910, at Aurora. Her parents were Charles and Hulda (Johnson) Fowler.

She is survived by two sons, Wesley Pettipiece and Larry Pettipiece, both of Crawford; two grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Pettipiece's funeral will be at 10 a.m., Friday, April 20, at Chamberlain Chapel at Crawford, with the Rev. Tim Pratt officiating. Burial will be at Crawford Cemetery. A memorial has been established for Ponderosa Villa. Donations may be sent to Security First Bank at Crawford. Chamberlain Chapel of Crawford is in charge of arrangements.

Diana "Diny" Vogel, 35

(April 21) IPSWICH, S.D. - Diana Lyn "Diny" Purchase Vogel, 35, died Friday, April 18, 2003, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital. She was born on August 7, 1967, at Galesburg, Ill., to Melvin and Marlene (Hornbaker) Purchase.

This is the area where she grew up and attended school. In 1981 the family moved to Alliance, Neb., where she graduated from Alliance High School in 1985. On Feb. 14, 1986, she was married to Tim Votruba at Hemingford, Neb. She then returned to Galesburg where she worked for Schooners and Jumers. On Dec. 23, 1991, she was married to Darrel Vogel at Alliance and she worked for the Alliance Times Herald. In 2001 she moved to the Ipswich area where she worked for Wilson's Orthodontist, South Dakota Wheat Growers Association and Midland Press, Aberdeen. She also worked for the Trail at Ipswich. Diana's children were her greatest joy. She enjoyed motorcycle riding, music, dancing, volleyball and working on the computer. She was a member of the Women In The Wind and had been initiated into the Twisted Sister Club. She was past chairman and co-chairman of the St. Jude's Bike-A-Thon, PTA and on the committee for the new playground equipment in Alliance. She is survived by three daughters, Sara Lyn, Olivia Faith and Anna Grace Vogel of Ipswich; her parents, Melvin and Marlene Purchase of Alliance; sister, Becky (Mark) Hannam and their children, Bobbie, Ben and Jacob, Galesburg; numerous uncles, aunts, cousins, friends and a longtime friend, Kelly Lynch. She was preceded in death by her grandparents and her brother, Terry L. Purchase.

Vogel's funeral will be at 1 p.m., Thursday, April 24, at Hinchiff-Pearson-West Funeral Home, Galesburg, with Pastor Tom Larsen officiating. Burial will be at Prairie City Cemetery, Prairie City, Ill. There also will be a memorial service at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 3, at Richland Wesleyan Church, Mina, S.D., with Pastor Ron Wickard officiating. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday April 23, at the funeral home in Illinois. Memorials may be sent to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Spitzer-Osthus Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Lena J. Owens, 81

(Apr. 22) CHADRON - Lena J. Owens, 81, died Thursday, April 18, 2002, at her home. She was born April 27, 1910 at Pedro, S.D. Her parents were Dietrich F. and Anna (Hamann) Busskohl.

She grew up on a homestead in South Dakota, and moved with her parents to Hot Springs, S.D., in 1929. She moved to Chadron in 1930. She was married to Joseph Owens on Oct. 21, 1933. He preceded her in death in 1962. They had two daughters, Barbara Jo and Beverly Jean. They both preceded her in death. She made custom draperies for Midwest Furniture Co., for 12 years. She was manager and director of food service at Chadron State College from 1960 to 1975. She is survived by her son-in-law, Jeffrey Schmidt of Alliance; foster daughter, Rosanell Husted of Huron, S.D.; step-daughter, Juanita Long of McCloud, Calif.; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also is survived by sisters, Anna Powell of Custer, S.D., Tillie Wollesen of Chadron, and Dorothy Mayer of Isabel, S.D.; brothers, LaVern Busskohl and wife Joyce of Custer, S.D., and Arthur Bosskohl and wife Rachel of Newcastle, Wyo.; and sisters-in-law, Mary Sandlan of Custer, and Delores Busskohl of Renton, Wash. She was preceded in death by three sisters, one brother and two stepsons.

Mrs. Owen's funeral was Thursday, April 18, at Our Savior Lutheran Church. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery.

Bob Carr, 71

(Apr. 22) ALLIANCE - Bob Carr, 71, of Alliance died April 19, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital. He was born Aug. 7, 1930, at Bristow to Charley and Gladys (Hartman) Carr.

He married Betty Kraft on Nov. 15, 1951. He served in the U.S. Marine Corp during the Korean War. He and his family moved to Alliance in 1959. He worked for KCOW Radio for 17 years and was Building and Zoning Administrator for the City for 18 years. He was an active member of the United Methodist Church, served on the Camp Norwesca Board, Campfire Board, president of the Chamber of Commerce, planning commission, board of adjustment and on the board of the Box Butte County Employees Credit Union. He was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 50 years Betty Carr; his daughters and husbands, Mary Ann and Buzz Grover of Hill City, S.D., and Sue and Horace Howard of Alliance; grandchildren, Kasey and Kim Carter of Charlotte, N.C., Heidi Schaub of Keystone, S.D., Angie and Ernie Charles of Alliance, Craig Carter of Glenwood Springs, Colo., Jennifer Grover of Hill City, S.D., Matt and Tina Howard of Alliance; and 3 great-grandchildren, Hayley, Cade and Colton Charles of Alliance. He also is survived by brothers and spouses, Russell and Vera Carr of Brush Prairie, Wash., and Jim and Peggy Carr of Alliance; sister and spouse, Beth and Paul Classen of Lake Jackson, Texas; sister-in-law Faye Carr of Houston, Texas; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Eva Carr and brother, John Carr.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, April 23, at the United Methodist Church in Alliance with the Revs. Mark Schutt and Kasey Carter officiating. Burial with military rites will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the United Methodist Church Elevator Fund, Nebraska Boys Ranch, Camp Norwesca or to a charity of the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

David Donner, 21

(April 22) HYANNIS - David Wayne Donner, 21, died Sunday, April 20, 2003, at Hyannis. He was born Feb. 16, 1982, at Holyoke, Colo., to Jerry R. and Katherine K. (Fecht) Donner.

During his early years, the family lived on several ranches throughout central and western Nebraska. He graduated from Hyannis High School in 2000. He attended Marine Corps boot camp at San Diego, Calif., in 2002. He was living at Gordon and employed in the car service department at Farmer's Coop at the time of his death. He will be remembered as a fun-loving, energetic young man, devoted to friends and family. He rarely passed up an opportunity to instigate or participate in any joking shared. He was an outdoorsman and received a Master Angler Award at age 5, when he caught a 12 1/2 lb. channel cat fish at Bud Lake near Gothenburg. He participated in high school football and wrestling, and was a member of the Farmer's Coop bowling team at Gordon. He was eagerly awaiting the arrival of his first child, a daughter, due June 2, and wedding July 12. He is survived by his fiancee, Katrina Glum of Gordon; parents, Jerry and Katherine Fecht of Hemingford; brothers and sisters, Jennifer (Kurt) Redding of Omaha, Warren (Vicky) Donner of Gordon, Stacy (Casey) Stethem of North Platte, Justin (Sharalyn) Donner of Grand Island, Cindy Donner of Fort Collins, Colo., Jared Donner and Dawn Donner of Hemingford; grandparents, Clara Donner of Grand Island and Betty and Keith Fecht of Gothenburg; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and "adopted" family members.

A service to celebrate David's life through songs and stories by family and friends will be at 7 p.m., Tuesday, April 22, at Chamberlain-Cicmanec-Pier Chapel. Mr. Donner's funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, at the First Presbyterian Church at Gordon, with Rev. Vonne Blessman-Andersen officiating. Burial will be at the Gordon Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Warren and Justin Donner, Don Hald, Monte Garner, Brad Sweet, Jeremy Benzel, Keith Wolkins and Trevor Macumber. Honorary pallbearers include Jared Donner, Brent and Ryan Foreman, Brad Daugherty, Rocky Holm, Josh and Matt Garner. Memorials may be given to his daughter, Abigayle MacKenzie Donnor, or to your hometown EMT squad. Chamberlain-Cicmanec-Pier is in charge of arrangements.

Rudolph P. "Rudy" Dubs, 85

(Apr. 23) ASHBY - Rudolph P. "Rudy" Dubs, 85, died Sunday, April 22, 2001, at Box Butte General Hospital in Alliance. He was born Feb. 10, 1916 at the home place south of Ashby. His parents were Ludwig and Rosa (Vollenweider) Dubs.

He attended school at Dist. 9 through the eighth grade. He helped his father with the ranch until he joined the U.S. Army in 1942. He served until 1946, during World War II, when he returned to the ranch. He was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, served on the local school board, Co-op board, NRD, and one term as county commissioner.

He is survived by his wife Frances of the home; three daughters, Rose Wehtje of Hemingford, Nancy Mazanec of Hemingford, and Kathy Doty of Loveland, Colo.; three sons, Paul Dubs of Ashby, Sid Dubs of Alliance, and Ted Dubs of Powell, Tenn.; 13 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren. He also is survived by one sister, Helen Warden of Denver, Colo.

Mr. Dubs' funeral will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, April 24, at the UCC Church at Hyannis, with Pastors Roger Larson and Ted Dubs officiating. Burial will be in the Hyannis Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church. Memorials may be made to the Grant County Ambulance or the donor's choice. Mullen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
