Wayne Roger Bauerkemper

Wayne Roger Bauerkemper, 83 of Sidney, Neb. died April 20, 2004 at the Memorial Health Center in Sidney. His wife, Thurma (Adams) Bauerkemper was born and raised in Kimball.

Memorial services were April 23 in the Holechek Funeral Home with Brother Dennis Barrack of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses officiating. Cremation has taken place. Holechek Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

He was born Jan. 6, 1921 to George and Myrtle (McNelly) Bauerkemper at Council Bluffs, Iowa and grew up in Omaha, Neb. He served in the military from 1942 to 1946 when he moved to Sidney.

On March 27, 1948 he married Thurma Adams at Gering, Neb.

He worked at the Sioux Ordinance Army Depot from 1948 until 1953, then worked for Ohio Oil Company. In 1956 he started Bauerkemper Motor Clinic, which he owned until retiring in 1983. After retirement he and his wife spent the winter months in Arizona.

Survivors include his wife of Sidney; three sons: Robert and wife Pat Bauerkemper of Chadron, Neb., Ronald and wife Sharon Bauerkemper of Denver, Colo. and Roger and wife Georgia Bauerkemper of Ogallala, Neb.; daughter, Patricia Schilz of Sidney; 9 Grandchildren and 16 Great-grandchildren.

His parents, a brother, Irwin and a sister, Margaret, preceded him in death.

Lester K Rathman

Lester K Rathman 96, of Scottsbluff, Neb. and formerly of Banner County, died Saturday April 17, 2004 at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. His Funeral Services will be Fri., April 23 at 2 p.m. in the First United Methodist Church in Gering with Pastor Linda Battello officiating. Interment will be at West Lawn cemetery in Gering. Friends may call at Gering Memorial Chapel Thurs. April 22 from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. A memorial has been established to the Banner County Scholarship fund. Tributes of sympathy may be left at www.geringchapel.com

Lester was born November 17, 1907, in Doniphan Neb., the son of John and Minnie (Khremke) Rathman. The family moved to the Banner County area when he was seven. Lester, his mother and two brothers came on a train to Kimball to meet his father who had come ahead with the livestock. In a wagon they traveled over fences on snow drifts to their home west of Harrisburg, to find the door had blown open and the house was full of snow.

On December 24, 1929 he married Regina (Jean) Brown, who was a schoolteacher in Banner County. They resided there and farmed and ranched until his retirement in 1980 when he spent many hours in his wood shop making things for his kids and grandkids. They moved to the Residency in Scottsbluff in 1992 and he resided there until his death, but he never gave up his love of the farm.

Lester is survived by daughters and sons-in-law Marjorie and Charles Smith of Gering, Phyllis and Glenn Wendt of Goodyear Ariz., and Judy and Jim Stauffer of Banner County; nine grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; and four great, great grandchildren; sister Agnes Wynne of Banner County and his extended family at the Residency.

He was preceded in death by his wife in April of 1993, two brothers, Elmer & John and one sister, Ada Nighswonger.

Bradford Walls

Bradford Aaron "Brad" Walls, 59, of Kimball died at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Clarkson Hospital in Omaha on April 17, 2004. A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Sat. April 24 at the St. John's Lutheran Church of Kimball, with Pastor Bradley Heinecke officiating.

Cremation has taken place and burial of the remains will be in the Kimball cemetery. A Memorial has been established to "Sight First" in care of the Kimball Lion's Club or the Kimball Volunteer Fire Department. Cantrell Funeral Home is assisting with the arrangements.

Brad was born on October 4, 1944 in Cheyenne to Virgil and Myra (Miller) Walls. He lived in Albin, Wyo. until 1960 when his family moved to Pine Bluffs. In 1963 he graduated from Albin High School. He farmed in the Albin and Pine Bluffs area for a number of years. He worked as a roustabout in oil fields, and later at the Gambles store.

Brad and Nancy Marie LeMay were married on Jan. 28, 1967 in Kimball. They moved to Kimball in 1968 where he worked as a lineman for the city until his eyesight forced him to leave his job in 1975. He was a talented carpenter and enjoyed woodworking. He made cabinets for his home and the Methodist and Lutheran churches. He also worked for Weatherwise.

He was a FFA alumni, and served on the Kimball Volunteer Fire Department of which he was an honorary member. He was an active and longtime member of the Kimball Lion's Club. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy of Kimball; sons Damon and wife Jennifer Walls of Littleton, Colo., Derrick and wife Mellissa Walls of Pine Bluffs, Wyo.; brother Nathan and wife Joyce Walls of Ogallala, Neb; sister Jerrene and husband John Randall of Kimball; one grandson Jordan Walls of Littleton; special cousins Earl and wife Vernette Palmer of Spearfish, S.D. and Ruth Bragg of Seattle, Wash., and two maternal aunts Dorothy E. Miller and Lucille Miller both of Albin, Wyo; 22 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Constance Jon Polm.

Kent Johnson

Kent Johnson, 55 of rural Potter, Neb. died Sunday, March 28, 2004 at his home south of Potter.

Funeral services were held Friday, April 2, 2004 in the Potter United Methodist Church with the Rev. Alan Davis and Pastor Mary Frohs officiating. Burial was in the Potter cemetery.

Friends called April 1 to sign the register book at the Holechek Funeral Home in Sidney. A Memorial has been established.

Kent Leon Johnson was born July 27, 1948 in Sidney, Neb. to Warren and Margaret (Lipke) Johnson. He attended the Potter Public Schools, graduating in May of 1966. He then attended the Denver Automotive Institute where he received a mechanic certificate. He also attended Vo-Tech, studying airframe and power plant as an airplane mechanic.

On May 20, 1966 he married Geraldine Mathewson at Potter. In July 1969 the family moved to Wray, Colo. and in 1970 he went to work at Larabee Motors. They moved to Kimball in 1972 where he worked at J.K. Chevrolet. In 1975, Kent took up farming south of Dix and in 1998 they moved south of Potter, where he lived at the time of his death.

Survivors include his wife, Geraldine Johnson of Potter, Neb.; five sons: Rob and wife Lisa Johnson of Sidney, Neb., Brad Johnson of Chadron, Neb., Jeff Johnson of Sidney, Neb., Jay C. and wife Jackie Johnson of Sutherland, Neb. and Jed Johnson of Potter, Neb.; his parents, Warren and Margaret Johnson of Sidney, Neb.; one brother, Kris and wife Sadonna Johnson of Sidney, Neb.; seven grandchildren: Becky, Weston, Whitney, Trevor, Kelsey, Kirsten and Hadley; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents: J.C. and Aleata Johnson, and Ed and Hattie Lipke, and two uncles: Gordon and Wendell Johnson.

Maxine E. Downer

Maxine E. (Leafdale) Downer age 76 died Monday, March 29, 2004 at her home north of Bartley. She was born July 10, 1927 in Kimball, Neb. to George and Minnie (Larson) Leafdale.

Maxine graduated from Banner County High School in Harrisburg in 1944. She married Kenneth Downer in 1945. The couple had six children. Kenneth and Maxine farmed in banner County till 1961. At that time Kenneth and Maxine moved to their farm north of Bartley.

Maxine was a member of the Kemper Memorial United Methodist Church in Bartley, the Dorcas Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star in Bartley. She enjoyed family, gardening, doing stained glass and her dog MacCager.

Maxine was preceded in death by her parents and husband Kenneth.

Maxine is survived by four sons: Steve and wife Patricia of Bartley, Neb.; Herb and wife RozLynn of Mason City, Neb.; Tom and wife Cheryl of Wichita, Kan.; Andy and wife Pamela of Cambridge, Neb.; two daughters: Susan and husband Steve Ervin and Holly and husband Jim Mollhoff all of Cambridge; 12 grandchildren: Melissa and husband Critchfield of Bartley;Derek Downer and wife Maria of Hastings; Todd Downer of Bartley; Deb and husband Mike Shuck of Hastings, Neb.; Janelle and husband Paul Davis, Heather and husband Terry Madison, and Heidi and husband Blake Pritts all of Kearney, Neb.; Hope Downer of Mason City, Neb.; Cody and wife Kim of Bartley; Caren Ervin of Cambridge; Amy and husband Brent Robertson of Elsie and Josh Mollhoff of Doniphan, Neb.: six great grandchildren: Sarah and Emily Shuck of Hastings; Karlie Swink of Bartley; Cassie Ervin of Cambridge; Paige Ervin of Bartley and Dylan Downer of Hastings: a brother Norris Leafdale and wife Judy of Harrisburg; a sister Marjorie and husband John Loehlin of Austin, Texas; a brother-in-law Howard Downer and wife Margie of Harrisburg, Neb.; three sisters-in-law: Marguerite Bjornsen of Vancouver, Wash.; Maxine Corr and Betty Downer of Gering, Neb.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, April 1, 2004 at the Trinity United Methodist Church of Cambridge with Pastor David Rowe officiating. Interment was in the Bartley cemetery in Bartley, Neb. Memorials may be left in her name at the Lockenour-Jones Mortuary of Cambridge, Neb., POB 247, Cambridge, NE 69022, (308) 697-3838, Fax 308 697-3588.

Helen M. Kinney

Helen Minnie Kinney, 82 of Kimball, died on Friday April 2, 2004 at the Kimball County Manor. A funeral service was held on Monday April 5, 2004 at the Cantrell Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Roger Gillming officiating. Burial was in the Dix Rural cemetery. Visitation was Sunday April 4. A memorial has been established to the Kimball County Manor. Cantrell Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.

Helen was born on May 10, 1921 north of Kimball to John and Hazel (Wood) Jessop. They moved their farmstead north of Potter. She married Elmer Holliday; they later divorced. Helen and Charles Kinney were united in marriage on January 14, 1947 in Kimball. They and their family moved to Grant, where Charlie farmed. They later moved back to the Potter-Dix area, residing in Dix in 1951. Helen has been a resident of the Kimball County Manor for the past eighteen years.

Helen enjoyed embroidering, cooking, and her family.

She is survived by three sons: Wayne and wife Pat Holliday of Hazelton, Iowa; John and wife Jodi Kinney of Kimball, and David Kinney; one daughter Vi and husband David Neil of LaPorte City, Iowa; one brother Jim and wife Shirlee Jessop of Vinton, Iowa; two sisters, Lily Scheib of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Mary Allen of Waterloo, Iowa; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Charles Kinney, on March 14, 1994, one son Francis Holliday, one daughter Clara LaRue; a grandson Roy Medbery, Jr.; two brothers and two sisters.

Kenneth Eugene Bacon

Kenneth Eugene Bacon, 86, of Kimball, formerly of Scottsbluff, died Thursday, April l, 2004 at the Mitchell Care Center. Funeral services were on Monday, April 5, at Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel in Scottsbluff with Pastor Willie Coop officiating. Interment was at East Lawn cemetery in Minatare. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Prairie Haven Hospice.

Kenneth was born Sept. 17, 1917 to Floy Bacon, and raised by his grandparents Charles Franklin and Eva Bacon from infancy. He spent his early years in Redfield, S.D., before moving to Minatare in approximately 1922, where he received his education.

Kenneth, at the age of 12, and his father, held the record for a time, hauling and scooping beets from a horse-drawn wagon. He married Audrey Smith on Dec. 28, 1936.

Kenneth worked for the WPA, the sugar factory, and various farmers and trucking firms. After living in Torrington for 25 years, they moved to Scottsbluff. In 1971, he became employed by Lockwood Corporation as a truck driver, where he received a million-mile award, then retired in 1983 to care for his wife. After retiring from Lockwood, he worked at home buying and selling metals and produce. He sold produce at the farmers market for approximately 16 years, a hobby he dearly loved.

His wife of 56 years died in 1994.

He then married lifelong friend Velma Mowery Craghead Dec. 26, 1997, who became his partner in the farmers market and in life. After he became ill in 2003, they moved to Kimball to be near his son and daughter-in-law.

He is survived by his wife Velma; daughters, Shirley Sterkel and Sharon Louder of Scottsbluff; son and daughter-in-law Kenneth James and Mary Lou Bacon of Kimball; stepdaughter and her husband Naoma and Steve Hurst of Arlington, Texas; stepson and his wife Stanley and Bobbie Smith of Scottsbluff; three half brothers, Jack Baseler, Wayne Baseler and Warren Baseler, all of South Dakota; grandchildren, Jama Leonhardt, Kent Bacon, Jolene Louder, Shauna Fowlkes, Megan Keller and Justin Sterkel; 14 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, four step grandchildren and seven step great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his biological mother, his parents, wife Audrey, sister Ismae Freouf, and two half sisters.

Jerry J. Christensen

Jerry J. Christensen, 55, of Potter died on Friday, April 3, 2004 as a result of injuries suffered in a highway accident in Cheyenne County.

A memorial service was Wed., April 7 at the Potter United Methodist Church. Pastor Mary Frohs officiated. Burial followed in the Potter cemetery.

Memorial gifts may be given to the Mile High Chapter of Pheasants Forever. Cantrell Funeral Home of Kimball is assisting with the arrangements.

Jerry was born November 13, 1948, in Sidney, a son of Jess Willard and Sarah Louise (McMillen) Christensen. He was a lifelong resident of Potter and a graduate of Potter High School. He and Lavonne Langley were married in Potter on August 7, 1971. He worked for Farmor Co-op and for F.E.C. and as of April 1 had been employed there for 26 years. He was a former member of the Potter Volunteer Fire Department. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved spending time with his three grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Lavonne; son Ryan and wife Emily Christensen of Kimball, and daughter Crystal and husband Robin Schliep of Sutherland; one sister Heather and husband Jerry Lipska of Potter; three grandchildren, Cole and Isabelle Christensen and Dakota Schliep.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Sarah and Jess “Tuffy” Christensen, and a brother, Donald.

Karen Pruett Woken

Karen Louise Pruett Woken, 59, of Melbourne, Ark. passed away on March 8, 2004 at her residence. Karen was a former resident of Kimball and Bushnell.

Born December 27, 1944 in Alliance, Ohio, she was the daughter of Eugene H. Pruett and Nana Mae Grimes Harvell. During her working years she worked at a factory and in restaurants. Karen was of the Baptist faith.

Karen leaves to mourn her passing: one son, Patrick Franks of Placerville, Calif.; one daughter, Sheryl Kendall of Reno, Nev.; a brother Dale F. Pruett of Kimball, Neb.; two sisters, Katheryn R. Taylor of Bushnell, Neb., and Anna J. Jackson of Melbourne, Ark.; five grandchildren: Jacob Franks, Angelica Franks, both of Cheyenne, Wyo.; Jocelyn Kendall, Crystal Kendall, both of Reno, Nev.; Brady Bouteiller of Reno, Nev.; and a host of other relatives and good friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Eugene H. Pruett, Nana Mae Grimes Harvell; a stepfather, Ira Harvell; and one infant brother, Carl Pruett.

Visitation was held March 10 at Eddie's Family Funeral Home in Melbourne, Ark. Graveside service was held March 11 at the Reeves cemetery near Guion, Ark. Pallbearers included Sonny Brooks, Randall Lovelace, Jim Haley, Eudell Smith, Sam Owens, and Jack Jackson.

Kenneth Dee Kirby

Kenneth Dee Kirby, 67, of Iliff, Colo. died March 26, 2004 at Iliff, Colo. after a lengthy illness. Services were on March 30 at Tennant Funeral Home. Rev. Scott Gentry officiated. Cremation too k place.

He was born March 20, 1937 at Warsaw, Mo. to Albert Washington Kirby and Goldie Marie Bonner. He attended school in Warsaw, moving with his parents to Sterling, Colo. in 1953. He married Faye Marie Hager on April 17, 1955 in Sterling.

Kenneth worked as a roustabout and foreman in the oil industry for O’Neil Tank, Z and S Construction in Kimball, Neb., and other companies throughout Colorado, Nebraska, and Wyoming for most of his career. With his wife, he founded K and F Trucking in the mid ‘90s hauling commodities until disability forced his retirement in 1996. Ken and Faye returned to Logan County in 1998 purchasing land for a home in Iliff where he resided until his death.

Survivors include his wife Faye Marie; son and daughter-in-law Rick and Carla Kirby, Kimball; daughters and sons-in-law, Teresa and Dennis Bradford, Deertail, Colo., Vicky and Elmer Todd, Fayetteville, N.C., and Lisa and Jim Todd, Colorado Springs, Colo.; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Richard Kirby of Kimball, and sister Marvis Green of Imperial, Neb.

Memorials may be made to the Kenneth D. Kirby Memorial Fund c/o Kirby family, P.O. Box 262, Iliff, Colo. 80736.

His hobbies and special interests included iron works, aviation, motorcycles, camping and boating. He loved people and enjoyed both telling and hearing a good joke or story.

Jane Bowers

Jane Bowers 66, of Carbondale Kan. and formerly of Kimball, passed away March 26, 2004 in Topeka, Kan. She lived in Kimball in the 1970s with her family.

She was born October 26, 1937 in Hays, Kan. the daughter of Willis and Veronas Kent. Jane was employed by Hertz Car Rental for 20 years, where she managed stations in Hays, Kan. and Manhattan, Kan.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Jane is survived by her daughters, Kim Schroller, Topeka, Kan, Brenda Schumacher, Andover, Kan., her son, Terry Bowers, Topeka, Kan.; four grandchildren, and one brother, Gene Kent of Guadalajara, Mexico.

Cremation is planned. Private family services will be held in Hays, KS.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mother to Mother, a Topeka Organization that provides mentoring for mothers, and the American Cancer Society and may be sent in care of Penwell-Gabel Midtown Chapel who is assisting the family.

Joseph A. LeMay

A memorial service will be held for Joseph Ambrose LeMay, of Kimball, at 11:00 AM on Friday, April 2, 2004 at the Cantrell Funeral Home of Kimball. The Reverend Robert Karnish will officiate. Cremation has taken place and burial of the remains will be in the Kimball cemetery. If friends wish, they may make a donation to the Kimball Fire Department. Cantrell Funeral Home is assisting with the arrangements.

Joseph died on December 19, 2003 in Kimball. Survivors include his wife, Florence of Kimball; a son, Larry Wayne and his wife Sondra LeMay of Gunnison, Colo.; daughters Delores Arlene and husband Dick Eberl of Grand Island, Neb.; Shirley Joanne McAhren of Hawthorne, Calif.; and Nancy Marie and husband Brad Walls of Kimball, Neb.; daughter-in-law Helen Mae LeMay of Arizona; and sister Mary Louise Seyb of Hutchinson, Kan. Seventeen grandchildren and thirty-two great grandchildren also survive.

Mr. LeMay was preceded in death by his first wife Amy Thompson in June of 1944; a son Richard LeMay; four brothers and one sister.

Kent Johnson

Kent Johnson, 55 of rural Potter, Nebraska died Monday, March 29, 2004. Funeral arrangements are pending at the Holechek Funeral Home in Sidney.
