Ernest Hickox

Ernest Hickox, 73, of Kimball, died at his home on Friday, Jan. 23, 2004. Arrangements are pending. Memorial services may be held at a later date. Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Charles Jackson

Charles ‘Chuck’ E. Jackson, 87, of Scottsbluff, died Monday, Jan. 12, 2004 at the Western Nebraska Veterans Home. Memorial services were held Jan. 15 at First Presbyterian Church in Scottsbluff with Pastor Scott Peterson officiating. His remains were cremated at the Joliffe Funeral Home and Crematory in Scottsbluff. Friends who wish may contribute to the Charles Jackson Memorial Fund. Condolences may be left for the family at sympathy@jolliffefuneralhome.com.

Chuck was born March 8, 1916 in Osceola, Neb. to Wilbur and Dossie (Lovell) Jackson. He grew up in Osceola and graduated from Osceola High School. Following the death of his father in 1938, he moved with his mother and family to Scottsbluff where he was employed by Civilian Conservation Corps. He entered the U.S. Army I 1942 and served in the European Theatre of Operations until his discharge in 1945. He married Helen Hartwig in 1943 in Harrisburg.

He was a carpenter in Scottsbluff and enjoyed reading. He attended First Presbyterian Church, was a member of Admiral Dewey Post #1681 VFW, the Eagles Lodge and the American Legion in Bayard. His wife preceded him in death in 1993.

He is survived by his sons, Rich and his wife Peg Jackson, Scottsbluff; Allen Jackson, Lake Minatare; six grandchildren; companion Maxine Weaver of Scottsbluff; sister Shirley Schledewitz of Scottsbluff, and brother Bill Jackson of Twin Falls, Idaho.

His parents, wife, three brothers, and four sisters preceded him in death.

Marilyn French

Marilyn A. French, age 66, died at her home on Wednesday, January 14, 2004. Funeral Services were held on Monday, January 19, 2004 at the Cantrell Funeral Home of Kimball. Pastor Virgil Johnson officiated. Visitation were held on Sunday, January 18. If friends wish, memorials may be given to the Dix Fire Department. Cantrell Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Marilyn was born on March 1, 1937 to Harry and Bernice (Ogle) Petersen. She moved to Kimball as a young girl with her family. She graduated from the Kimball High School in 1954 and continued her education in Greeley, Colo. where she earned a teaching certificate. She taught at a rural school southeast of Bushnell, Neb. She married Gordon French on January 3, 1956 in Kimball.

Mrs. French was active in her community as a past member of the Rebekah Lodge, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Dix Garden Club. She enjoyed horses and loved being in her yard and garden. She was happiest surrounded by her grandchildren.

Marilyn is survived by her husband, Gordon of Dix; sons Roger and wife Cari French of Richmond, Va., John French of Dix; daughter Christy and husband Pete Yetter of Winnemucca, Nev.; and sister Opal Kellner of Wickenburg, Ariz. Her grandchildren, Jennifer, Samantha, and Kailynn Yetter and David and Benjamin French also survive.

Mrs. French was preceded by her parents, infant daughter Billie Jo, and sister Lois Hayes.

June Clary

June Loven Clary, 75, of Bushnell died at her home on January 18, 2004, with her family at her side. A memorial celebration of life will be held January 28, 2004. Memorials in June’s name may be made to the Calvary United Methodist Church in Bushnell. Cantrell Funeral Home of Kimball is assisting the family with arrangements.

June was born on June 23, 1928 in Cushing, Okla. to Horace and Lola (Dunkin) Brown.

She graduated from high school in Edmond, Okla. and was married . Later she went into the restaurant business, owning and operating several restaurants and a bakery in the Stillwater, Okla. area. She moved to Bushnell two years ago.

She will be remembered as an excellent cook. She enjoyed people and needle crafts. She especially enjoyed the company of her cat "Conan.” June was a sweet tempered, wonderful person who will be missed by her family and friends.

June is survived by a sister, Beth Krumme; one son, James Lee; her daughters, Jeanne Laboray, Lola Cox, Sue Williams, Ida Cooksey, and Wilma Knori; thirteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, two sons Charles and Harry and a daughter Terri.

Carl Frank

Carl J. Frank, 73, of Kimball, formerly of Sterling, Colo., died Jan. 15, 2004, in Cheyenne. Visitation was Jan. 18 at Tennant Funeral Home in Sterling, with vigil and rosary. Mass of Christian burial was Jan. 19 at St. Anthony Catholic Church with the Rev. James Baird officiating. Burial followed at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Frank was born Nov. 20, 1930, to Joseph and Elizabeth (Kippes) Frank in Sterling. He attended Crook schools, graduating in 1948. He then attended Northeastern Junior College. He later served two years in the Air Force.

He married Marilyn Harderode on April 8, 1952 in Sterling.

Mr. Frank was self-employed, working as an owner-operator truck driver. He farmed and ranched from 1976 to 1998, when he retired to Kimball. He was a member of the Catholic Church and the Lions Club.

He is survived by wife Marilyn; sons Rodney Frank, Sterling, Carl Frank, Jr., Rawlins, Wyo., and Patrick Frank, Greeley; daughters Carla Propst, Houston, Del., Lynell Frank, Greeley, and Raelene Rhodes, Merino; brothers Clemens and George Frank; sisters Clara Martin, Barbara Coster, Catherine Haberkorn and Irene Molzen; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by brothers Jacob, Joseph, Francis, Anthony and Venantius Frank; and sisters Rose Holbrook, Lucina Wray, and Christina, Abby and Teresa Frank.

Memorials may be made to the Carl Frank memorial fund, in care of Tennant Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1547, Sterling, CO 80751.

Mary Stanfield

Mary Theresa Stanfield, 90, of Kimball died Monday, January 19, 2004 at her home after a lengthy illness. A rosary service will be held at 7:00 P.M. on Thursday, January 22, 2004 at the Cantrell Funeral Home. A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, January 23, 2004 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with Father Robert Karnish and Father Edward Cortney officiating. Cremation will follow the mass and a private family inurnment will be held at a later date. Cantrell Funeral Home is assisting with the arrangements.

Mary was born to Frank and Helen (Leso) Sova on August 12, 1913, in Fredericktown, Pa. The family moved to Rices Landing, Pa. where Mary attended Jefferson High School. After receiving her education, Mary moved to Pittsburgh and later Shaker Heights, Ohio where she worked as a nanny. Mary graduated from the Franklin School of Practical Nursing in Cleveland, Ohio in 1941. She worked at Republic Steel Corporation in 1942 and then joined the Women’s Army Air Corp. While stationed in Boston, Mary was asked to participate in a special prayer service at the Old North Church on “D” Day. In the Air Force she worked in the Financial Department at Indian Town Gap, Pa.

She married Robert L. Stanfield of Kimball on June 18, 1946. Mary and Robert bought their acreage northwest of Kimball in 1948 and built the house where they lived. Mary was an active member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and Rosary Alter Society. She taught Catechism classes for several years. She was a member of the A.P.H.E. Extension Club and served as President of the Kimball-Banner County Extension Council. Mary was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She was one of the original “Gray Ladies, ” who volunteered at the Kimball Hospital and assisted with Bingo at the Kimball Manor. Mary was also active in PTA while her children were in school. She was a member of a Church Study Club for over 40 years. She and Robert were also members of a pinochle group. For several years, Mary worked at Larsen’s Jewelry Store.

Mary enjoyed cooking and won many local honors for her baked goods in the Open Class Division at the County Fair. She was named Farmer’s Day Homemaker of the Year in 1984. She also liked to fish, garden, and travel, especially to casinos where she felt she won enough to “make things interesting.” She was an avid sports fan and enjoyed attending school activities of her children and grandchildren as they were growing up. Primarily, she loved spending time with her family and entertaining at holiday dinners.

Mrs. Stanfield is survived by her husband Robert of Kimball; son Robert Stanfield Jr. of Santa Fe, N.M.; daughter Kathleen and husband Patrick O’Brien of Kimball; grandson Coley, his wife Jennifer, and great-grandson Brendan of Naperville, Ill.; granddaughter Rebecca O’Brien of Nantucket, Mass; brothers Ted Sova of Sylmar, Calif., and Donald Sova of Rices Landing, Pa.; sisters Martha Bodish of Deltona, Fla. and Theresa Belski of Rices Landing, Pa.; sister-in-law Leatha Bushor of Kimball; nephew Kenneth Bushor and wife Galene of Lakewood, Colo.; niece Sue Ann Wallensen and husband George of Kimball; niece Shirley Kinnison and husband Dan of Kimball; niece, Esther Phillips and husband Wes of Bushnell; and numerous other nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Albert Sova; Elmer Sova, and sisters Anne Cebela, Veronica Galik, and Frances Sova.

Mary requested memorials be made to the local Girl Scouts or the Kimball Youth Baseball Program.

Kenneth Bowman

Kenneth Lloyd Bowman, 82 of Scottsbluff, died Friday, Jan. 16, 2004 at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. Funeral services were held Jan. 20 at Jolliffe Funeral Home with Pastor Ed Hunzeker officiating. Interment followed at Fairview cemetery.

He and his wife Myrna had operated retail stores together in Kimball, Bayard, Torrington, Sidney and Gering.

He was born June 11, 1921 in Sidney to John and Edith (Hadley) Bowman. He served n the U.S. Navy for six years during World War II, serving on the USS Colorado and the USS Massachusetts.

Survivors include his wife Merna of Scottsbluff; son and daughter-in-law Kim and Cathy Bowman of Gering; daughter and son-in-law Kristy and Tom Keller of Mitchell; grandchildren Jayson Keller and friend Alicia McDonald of Mitchell, Bo Bowman of Dougls, Ariz., and Amber Holen of Laramie, Wyo.; sister-in-law Darlene Bowman of Murfreesboro, Tenn; brothers-in-law Kenneth and his wife Geraldine Lee of Albion, and Maynard and his wife Doralee lee of Norfolk; and many special nieces and nephews.

Paul A. Baird

Paul Aaron Baird, 71, formerly of Kimball, died January 4 at St. Bernard’s Medical Center, Jonesboro, Ark., after a brief illness.

He was born August 2, 1932 on a family farmstead near Brunswick, Neb. He married Berneta Rae Hulshizer of Long Pine, Neb. on July 22, 1952. He served in the Army, being stationed n Ft. Benning, Ga. In 1956, they moved to Kimball, Neb. where he worked as a long-haul trucker, operated a gas station, and sold motorcycles. He also worked as a machinist and then as purchasing agent for Accessory Sales, Inc.

In 1981, he and his wife moved to Fort Morgan, Colo., where he worked as purchasing agent for Maverick Stimulation until 1991. He moved to Pampa, Texas and then to Amarillo. In 2003, they relocated to Jonesboro, Ark. to be closer to their children.

Paul was a talented glassblower, tinsmith, fly tier, and handweaver.

Survivors include his wife, Berneta Baird of Jonesboro, Ark., daughters and sons-in-law: LeAnne Baird and Ron Britton, Dallas; Karen and John Anderson, Columbia, Mo.; Jeanne and Dav Grossman, Jonesboro, Ark.; son and daugher-in-law Jeffrey and Paula Baird of Keller, Texas; 10 grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.

A private memorial service was planned for Jan. 8. Emerson Funeral Home, Jonesboro, Ark., handled local arrangements.

Dorthea K. Gatenby

Dorthea K. Gatenby, 93, of Kimball died on Wednesday January 7, 2004 at the Kimball County Manor. Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service was held at the Kimball County Manor Chapel on Tuesday January 13, 2004 with Pastor Dwayne Hunzeker officiating. Burial of cremated remains will take place at Rose Hill Memorial Park in Whittier, Calif. Cantrell Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Dorthea was born on October 18, 1910 in Engedal, Denmark to Niels and Jensine (Sorensen) Kammersgaard. After coming to the United States on April 16, 1913, she graduated high school in Bayard in 1929. She and Palmer Gatenby were united in marriage on November 30, 1938.

Dorthea worked for many years at Gooch’s Food Products in Lincoln, Neb., retiring in 1960. She then moved to Downey, Calif. and to Kimball, Neb. in 1990, residing at Park Terrace and moving into the Kimball County Manor in December 1999.

Dorthea is survived by her sisters Hilda Strauch of Kimball and Elsie Gayer of Madrid, Iowa; three sisters-in-law in California, as well as a nephew Alan and his wife Ruth Strauch of Grand Island; several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Palmer Gatenby on December 7, 1982.

Dorothy Erickson

Dorothy Erickson, 90 of Greeley, Colo., died Sunday, January 4, 2004 at Life Care Center.

She had married Wilfred Erickson of Kimball, Neb., on March 31, 1940, and he died in 1976.

She was born January 8, 1913 in Fort Collins, Colo. to Charles and Cleone (Patterson)Bayler. She was formerly from Grover and had lived in Greeley since 1985.

She graduated from Grover High School in 1930 and Colorado State College of Education, now University of North Colorado, with a BA degree. She taught in one-room country schools in Colorado, including Prairie View, Platteville, Grover and Severance elementary schools. She retired from Grover in 1977.

She is survived by a daughter, Joan and John Novak of Briggsdale; two sons Duane and Pat Erickson of Spring Creek, Nev., and Ronald and Shelly Erickson of Cheyenne, Wyo.; a niece Myrna Lee Goodwine of Cheyenne; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a brother.

Services were held January 7, 2004 at Allnutt Funeral Service-Macy Chapel. Burial was in Linn Grove cemetery in Greeley, Colo.

Memorials may be made to the Weld County Humane Society in care of Allnutt Funeral Services, 702 13 St., Greeley, CO 80631.

William Crossman

Funeral services for William H. Crossman, 79 of Gering, who died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004 at Regional West Medical Center, were held Monday, Jan. 12 at Jolliffe Funeral Home in Scottsbluff with Pastor Fred Voltmer officiating.

Interment was at West Lawn cemetery in Gering. Friends were able to call at the funeral home prior to the funeral and at the funeral. A memorial has been established to the family.

He formed Crossman Brothers Construction, where he spent more than 40 years building numerous quality homes in Gering, Scottsbluff and Banner County.

He was born May 9, 1924 at Rago, Colo., near Brush, to William B. and Charity M. (Bobbitt) Crossman. At an early age, he moved with his family to the Panhandle of Nebraska, where he grew up and graduated from Bayard High School in 1941. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII from 1945 to 1946, where he worked for the Veterans Administration in Washington, D.C.

On Dec. 8, 1999, he married his long-time friend, Carol (Callaham) Witt, in Torrington. He spent his retirement years working on wood projects and in remodeling. He was a fisherman and a life member of American Legion Post #36, serving once as Post Commander.

He is survived by his wife Carol of Gering, sister Ila Reichert; nephews Royce Crossman and wife Shirley, Robert Crossman and wife Kathy, Roy Reichert and wife Barb, and Charlie Reichert; nieces Sharol Nickal and husband Gary, Fern Winters and husband Chuck, and Margaret Gross and husband Carl; stepsons Gene Witt, Gary Witt and Michael Witt; stepdaughter Lucinda Johnson; 11 step-grandchildren, 3 great-nephews, and 4 great-nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Elmer and Samuel, sister Arleta Rhode, and sister-in-law Claire Crossman.

Truman Palmer

Truman A. Palmer, 80, passed away at his home on December 27, 2003. Mr. Palmer was born July 7, 1923 in Izzard County, Arkansas.

From 1954 until 1967, he was employed by Chandler and Simpson Oil Co. at Kimball, Neb. He married his wife Darlene on June 7, 1961. In 1968, he and Darlene moved to Vancouver, Wash. where he worked for Precision Wood Products until 1988.

He enjoyed whittling, hunting, fishing and camping.

Survivors include his wife Darlene, stepson Robert Packlain of Cloverdale, Calif., brothers Stanley Palmer of Montgomery, Ala. and John Palmer of Lander, Wyo., sister Inice Staggs of Hobert, Okla., three step-grandchildren, two step-great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.

Funeral services were held December 31, 2003 at Memorial Gardens Funeral Chapel in Vancouver, Wash. with Chaplain John Day officiating. Interment was at Evergreen Memorial Gardens cemetery.

Wesley Jorgensen

Wesley M. Jorgensen, 85, of Kimball died on Tuesday, January 13 2004 at the Western Nebraska Veterans Home in Scottsbluff, Neb. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2004 at 11:00 AM at the Cantrell Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Ed Hunzeker of Scottsbluff officiating. Burial will be in the Kimball cemetery. Visitation will be held on Fridaym January 16 from 10:00 AM until 8:00 PM. If friends wish, memorials may be given to the Kimball Lions Club. Cantrell Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Mr. Jorgensen was born on April 3, 1918 to Ollie and Mary (Petersen) Jorgensen in Minden, Neb. He graduated from high school in Minden and attended barber school in Denver, Colo. He served his country during World War II serving in the U.S. Army. He married Frieda Strauch on January 1, 1950 in Kimball. He owned a barber shop in Kimball for many years.

He was active in the Kimball community and was especially active in the Kimball Lion’s Club, of which he was a member for over 50 years. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias Lodge, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Kimball Volunteer Fire Department.

Mr. Jorgensen is survived by his wife, Frieda of Kimball; sister-in-law Florence LeMay, and a brother-in-law Walter Strauch both of Kimball. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Olie and Mary Petersen; sisters Annetta Sorensen and Clara Thompson, and brother Harold E. Jorgensen.
