Dorothy Southard

In celebration of one phenomenal woman’s 90 years of life, namely Dorothy M. Anderson Southard who left this earth on December 23, 2003. A celebration of her life began with viewing and a service on Monday, December 29, 2003 at the Yates Funeral Home, 373 E. Hayden Avenue, Hayden, Idaho. Our mother, our sister, our friend left an amazing amount of blessings to those she touched over the years. She gave in every way—her heart and herself to encourage or care for others.

Dorothy was born on July 23, 1913 in rural Banner County, Neb. where her life spanned from the horse and buggy to the space shuttle. She grew up “on the farm” in Nebraska where hard work was a way of life and fun was rolling up the rug and dancing to a neighbor’s fiddle music on Saturday nights. No one loved to dance more than Dorothy, even though she said, “I can’t carry a tune in a bushel basket.” The tunes were in her heart and feet.

Dorothy “boarded out” to attend high school, then taught school for several years in Nebraska. In 1943, she married Everett Southard, a hometown boy who was then an officer in the Air Force. She spent her married life as a military spouse beginning at Fort McClellan in Anniston, Ala. where their oldest daughter was born, then followed Everett to many duty stations, including Tuscon, Ariz. where their youngest daughter was born.

Following Everett’s death in 1960, Dorothy faced raising their daughters alone. Her never faltering faith and work ethics served them well. She cooked in a rural school house and then went back to school to renew her teaching certificate. She not only provided the necessities but, more importantly, gave her love and shared her faith.

Dorothy retired from teaching in 1971 and began a new career as a caregiver. With smiles and humor she graciously and kindly cared for others for about 20 years. She continued teaching life’s lessons by making cinnamon rolls and cookies, by crocheting afghans and rugs for many lucky recipients, by winning Grand Champion ribbon at the fair at age 87, by encouraging folks to get up and dance at the assisted living home, by joking with visitors, and by the sparkle in her eyes.

Dorothy is survived by daughter, Sherry Larson of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; daughter, Myrna Tihonovich of Boise, Idaho; brothers, Paul Anderson of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, Harold Anderson of Austin, Texas and Don Anderson of Colorado Springs, Colo.; sister, Phyllis Clinger of Sparks, Nev.; grandchildren, Lynette Philbrook of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, Mark Tihonovich of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, Amber Morton of Henderson, Colo., and Kacy Larson of Littleton, Colo., and seven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Albin and Sophie Anderson; sister, Phoebe Anderson; brother, Wayne Anderson, and husband, Everett Southard.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of North Idaho, 9493 North Government Way, Hayden, ID, 83835.
