Richard Pittam

Richard Orville Pittam, 63 of Parker, Colo. and formerly of Kimball, died on Thursday, February 20, 2003 at his residence. A memorial service was Feb. 24 in Castle Rock, Colo. Funeral Services were Feb. 25 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Kimball. The Rev. Roger Gillming officiated. Burial was in the Kimball cemetery.

Memorial gifts may be made to The Anschutz Cancer Pavilion, c/o U.C.H. Charitable Giving, P.O. Box 6508, Mail Stop F-485, Aurora, Colo. 80045-0508. The Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Richard was born at Boulder, Colo. on November 8, 1939, a son of Orvile Nis and Arra (Colclasure) Pittam. He graduated from high school in Kimball in 1957 where he was President of the Honor Society and played football for the Longhorns.

He attended Colorado State University and then attended Law School at the University of Wyoming and graduated from the College of Law at Laramie in 1969. He relocated to the Denver area where he lived and practiced law for the past 33 years. He was commissioned in the U. S. Navy where he served active duty for five years and was a member of the U. S. Naval Reserve for over 25 years.

Richard is survived by one son Michael Pittam and wife Stasi of Chicago, Ill, one daughter Lynn Rosen and husband Scott of Parker, Colo., his mother Arra Pittam of Kimball, a brother Don Pittam and wife Nancy of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, two grandchildren and a niece and a nephew.

He was preceded in death by his father in 1995.

George Vrtatko

George Vrtatko, 74 of Dix died on Saturday, February 22, 2003 at Bull Head City, Arizona. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 28, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Kimball with the Rev. Robert Karnish as celebrant. Burial will be in Dix Rural cemetery. Recitation of the Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Thurs., Feb. 27 at the Cantrell Funeral Home in Kimball.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Thurs. from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Memorial gifts may be made to the American Heart Association.

He was born June 13, 1928 in Kimball a son of Rose and Frank Vrtatko. George attended Dix School and graduated from Kimball County High School. He lived his entire life on a farm south of Dix building his own house in 1962 with his wife Ellen Mary (Svitak) whom he married October 8, 1955 at St. John's Catholic Church in Howells, NE.

He was a member of the NFO (National Farm Organization), a member of the Kimball Co-Op Fuel Board and member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Kimball. George became a pilot many years ago and owned his own plane.

He was a lifetime farmer and rancher and had always enjoyed working the land and livestock up until his sudden passing. In 1986 he purchased the Bull Canyon Ranch. He had recycled many buildings in the Kimball area, had mined for gold and silver, and was an avid auction buff. He loved taking time to go fishing with his sons and grandsons and he and Ellen enjoyed spending the winter months in Bull Head City, AZ.

George is survived by his loving wife Ellen of many years, two sons, James Vrtatko of Dix and Rodney and daughter-in-law Chris (Stahla) Vrtatko, and three grandsons, Michael, Trustin, and Jonathan all of Pine Bluffs.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Rudy and an infant brother Emil.

Jake Moyer

Jake Theodore Moyer passed away on February 22, 2003 while residing at the Devonshire Nursing Home in Sterling, Colo. The funeral will be Fri., Feb. 28, 2003 at 10 a.m. at the Tennant Funeral Home In Sterling, Colo.

Jake was born August 3, 1908 to lda Mae Elliott and Henry Moyer in Sterling, Colo. He was married to Marie Ashbaugh May 23, 1935. Jake was an outdoorsman and cowman all of his life, beginning at the age of twelve, in 1920 for Bill Reagen, north of Stoneham, Colo. Later he worked for John Sprague, of the Rock Ranch, for twenty years.

Jake and Marie purchased Indian Cave Ranch, north of Stoneham in 1946, where they resided until moving to Sterling in 1995. They enjoyed almost fifty years on the ranch raising cattle and working with horses. They also enjoyed the oil boom and had oil production on their property.

Jake's wife, Marie, passed away June 4, l 997. His parents, four brothers, William, Art, Earl, and Raymond, three sisters, Opal, Inez, and Mary also preceded his passing. Numerous nieces, nephews, and one sister survive him.

Alexander Kovatch

Alexander Kovatch, the son-in-law of Lula Gram, of Kimball, died. Burial was in Fort Lupton cemetery.

He was born July 31, 1931 in Scranton, Pa. He served in the Korean War. He married Bonnie Gram and they lived in Denver, Colo.

He is survived by wife Bonnie, son Alex and Lynne Kovatch of Calif., daughter Engel and John Polovsky of Cleveland, Ohio; brothers George in Boston, Ma., Mickey in Scranton and Billy in Allenstown, Pa., and their families.

Rachel Marks

Rachel Irene Marks 83 of Kimball died on Thursday, February 13, 2003 at Kimball County Manor. Funeral Services were Saturday, February 15, 2003 at the Cantrell Funeral Home in Kimball. Burial was in the Dix Rural cemetery.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Prairie Haven Hospice or the Kimball County Manor.

She was born at Cedar Rapids, NE on April 17, 1919 a daughter of Jens and Catherine (Langan) Jensen. She and Robert Leroy Marks were married April 17, 1938 in Gibbon, NE.

The couple moved to Dix in 1939 and lived there for many years. Rachel was the manager of the Dix School cafeteria from 1954 until 1971. In 1974 she moved to Oklahoma and then later back to Scottsbluff. She returned to live in Dix about six years ago.

She was a member of the Rebecca Lodge and the Presbyterian Church. She loved to read and enjoyed writing to and hearing from relatives and friends. She was a deeply devoted grandmother.

She is survived by two sons, Gary and wife Jaci Marks of Norfolk, NE, and Ronald and wife Hazel Marks of Dix, two sisters Ann Marks of Ashland, NE and Margaret and husband Verle Coon of Lincoln. Also surviving is a brother-in-law, Oscar Johnson of Lindsborg, KS and five grandchildren, Lennard and Tim Marks, Suzette Castagna, Llera Lantzer and Jennifer Nieman.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Robert on March 27, 1971 an infant daughter Catherine Rae, four brothers and two sisters, two grandchildren Melissa and Kyle Castagna and a grandson-in-law, Richard Castagna.

Marjorie Carroll

Marjorie Nadine Carroll, 82 of Kimball, Nebraska died Tuesday, February 11, 2003 at her daughter Kims home with her family by her side.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 15, 2003 at 11:00 A.M. at the St. Johns Lutheran Church in Kimball, Nebraska with Pastor Tom Jacobsen officiating. Interment will follow at East Lawn cemetery in Minatare, Nebraska. Memorials have been established to the Kimball County High School Foundation and the Prairie Haven Hospice. Visitation will be held Friday from 9:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel in Scottsbluff. Visitation will also be held 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. at the church on Saturday. Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Marjorie was born on February 26, 1920 in Minatare, Nebraska to Seth and Alice (Clouse) Fry. She graduated from Minatare High School and attended Chadron State College. She was united in marriage to William D. Carroll on September 4, 1941 in Harrisburg, Nebraska. The couple resided in Minatare until 1968 when they moved to Kimball, Nebraska. She was the secretary to the guidance counselor at the Kimball High School for 23 years, retiring in 1991. She was a member of the Eagles Club Erie #389 of Kimball. She enjoyed crocheting and was an accomplished seamstress. She was an avid Nebraska Cornhusker Fan.

Marjorie is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Nancy & Conrad Bachman of Papillion, Nebraska; son and daughter-in-law Lodge & Donna Carroll of Crete, Nebraska and daughter and son-in-law Kimberley & Howard Brown of Scottsbluff, Nebraska; six grandchildren Meg & Phil Jacobs of San Antonio, TX., John Bachman of Bozeman, MT., Jennifer & Greg Payne of Lenexa, KS., Sara Carroll of Lincoln, NE., Amanda Carroll of Selden, KS., and Brandon Brown of Scottsbluff, NE. She is also survived by six great grandchildren.

Her husband, parents, sister and brother preceded her in death.

Donna Smith

Donna J. Smith a resident of Green Valley, Ariz. for 18 years and a former 30-year resident of Kimball, died February 6, 2003.

Donna is survived by her husband of 51 years. Merl L. Smith; her bother Ron Hamilton: son Donald Smith; daughters Cathy Boragno, Jody Meyer and Sandy Smith, son-in-laws Tom Boragno and Herman Meyer and grandchildren Joe Boragno and Amy Meyer.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father Hugh and Vella Hamilton of Green Valley and infant sister Mary Lou.

Donna was born Nov. 25. 1933, in Oilton, Okla., to Hugh and Vella (Arnhart) Hamilton. She moved to Bairoil, Wyo., in 1948, attending school in Rawlins. She married Merl L. Smith on June 24, 1951. They moved to Kimball in January 1954, where they raised their family.

Donna served as Kimball County Assessor for 12 years before retiring in 1984 and moving to Green Valley to be near her parents.

For 14 years, she enjoyed crocheting and making crafts for the West Center Craft Fair in Green Valley. She also enjoyed her many travels with her family.

Donna will be deeply missed as she left us unexpectedly due to a sudden heart attack. She was a loving wife and mother and good friend.

There will be only a private family service at a later date.

Helen Stauffer

Helen Louise Stauffer, 87 of Gering, Nebraska died Sunday, February 16, 2003 at Regional West Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 19, 2003 at 2:00 P.M. at the Central Church of Christ in Gering with Pastors Howard Roseberry and Ken Boston officiating. Interment will be at West Lawn cemetery. Friends may call Tuesday 1:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. and Wednesday 9:00 A.M. to noon at Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel. Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Helen was born on August 26, 1915 at Melbeta, Nebraska to Stanley and Irma (Casteel) Jessup. She attended school in Banner County. She was united in marriage to Walter D. Stauffer on December 12, 1934 in Gering, Nebraska. Helen was a very loving wife, mother and grandmother. Her family always came first. She will be missed always.

Helen is survived by her husband of 68 years Walter Stauffer; daughter Gwen (Joe)Bayerl of Gering, Nebraska; son Jerry D.(Mona) Stauffer of Denver, Colorado; grandchildren Teri (Steve) Drake of Greybull, WY., Tina (Rick) Rein of Bayard, NE., Craig (Sundi) Stauffer of Bainbridge Island, WA., Janelle (Mark) Wade of North Las Vegas, NV., and Melody Holden of Galexa, Kansas; sister Betty Stewart of Broomfield, Colorado; ten great grandchildren and several nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her grandson Tim Muhr, parents, two sisters and two brothers.

Minnie Vowers

Minnie Vowers, age 89 of Kimball died Tuesday, February 4, 2003 at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. She is the mother of Mack and Merle Vowers, both of Kimball.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Vowers will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, February 7, 2003 at First English Lutheran Church. Pastor Dwayne Hunzeker will officiate. Burial will be in the Kimball cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 10:00 AM until 8:00 PM.

Memorial gifts may be made to the First English Lutheran Church. The Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ralph Strauel

Ralph L. Strauel, 85 of Bushnell died on Friday, January 31, 2003 at the Kimball County Manor. Cremation will take place and no visitation is scheduled. A memorial mass will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, February 7, 2003 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Kimball. The Rev. Robert Karnish will officiate. Inurnment will follow at the Kimball cemetery.

Memorial gifts may be made to Prairie Haven Hospice. The Cantrell Funeral Home of Kimball is in charge of arrangements.

He was born in Elgin, Illinois on July 30, 1917 a son of Ralph and Olive (Fender) Strauel. He grew up in that area and attended the Marmion Military School in Aurora, Ill. He worked as a machinist, first in Illinois and later transferring to California where he worked during WW II.

It was in California that he met his wife to be Corinne "Cozy" Mintken. They were married on March 30, 1940 in Las Vegas, NE and had been married for 62 years when she died April 4, 2002.

Ralph and Cozy came to this area in 1947 and farmed in Banner County for many years before retiring and 1990. They then moved into Bushnell. He and his wife loved to travel by RV and had traveled all over the country.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Kimball, the Knights of Columbus, a member of the Bushnell Lions Club and a life member of the Elks.

Ralph is survived by a number of nieces and nephews and by one sister Agnes Hubert of California and two sisters-in-law, Loretta Lux of Phoenix, AZ and Marg Mintken of Denver, CO.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one brother and two sisters.

"Pete" Schindler

Percy George "Pete" Schindler, 82 of Kimball died on Friday, January 31, 2003 at United Medical Center-West in Cheyenne, WY. Cremation took place and there was no visitation. A memorial service was Feb. 4 at the Cantrell Funeral Home in Kimball. Pastor Dwayne Hunzeker of the First English Lutheran Church officiating. Inurnment will be held at a later time.

Memorial gifts may be made in care of the family. The Cantrell Funeral Home of Kimball is in charge of arrangements.

He was born in Flowerfield (Gary), Nebraska on April 18, 1920 a son of Ruel and Hazel (Green) Schindler. He grew up in Banner and Kimball counties and attended the Flowerfield School. He entered the Army in 1941 during World War II and was later discharged to return home to Banner County to help his father farm the land.

He met and married Eva Mae Slingerland on August 27, 1943. They resided in Banner County until moving to Kimball in 1957, where he worked in the oilfield, then the City of Kimball for a time, and later returning to work in the oilfields of Nebraska as a truck driver and water hauler. During his retirement years he also farmed for several farmers in the area and loved working in the yard.

Pete is survived by his wife, Eva, his four children, daughters Claudia and her husband, John Olafson of Alliance, Trudy Schindler of Idaho Springs, Colorado, sons Roger of Big Piney, Wyoming and Hal and his wife Vicki, of Crest View, Florida. He also survived by his grandchildren, Mike Olafson, Casey Schindler, Tonia and her husband Tony McAdams, Sam and his wife Katie Schindler, and Becky Hitt. Two sisters Iona Cross of Cody Wyoming and Nellie Stockton of Gering. Three great-grandchildren, Lindsay Hitt, Jasmine Schindler-Ivy and Zachary McAdams as well as several nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and one sister Selma Baltes.

Inez Kuhns

Inez Irene Blue Kuhns, 78, of Gering, formerly of Kimball, died Saturday, February 1, 2003 at Regional West Medical Center at Scottsbluff. Services were Feb. 6 at the Bayard Assembly of God Church. Interment was in Oregon Trail Memorial cemetery at Bridgeport. A Memorial has been established to the Foster Grandparent program.

Inez was born Feb. 13, 1924 in Keyapaha County, Nebr., to Arthur and Harriett (Bills) Robinson. She was raised and educated in Keyapaha County, until moving to Brown County at the age of 18. At the age of 20 she moved to the Bayard/Bridgeport area. She married Alvin Blue, Oct. 9, 1944 at Ainsworth, Nebr.

She lived in Sidney for 20 years and Kimball for 3 years prior to moving to Gering in 1992. She was actively involved with the foster grandparent program in Kimball, Gering and Sidney.After the death of husband Alvin, she married Alonzo Kuhns, July 14, 1972 at Cheyenne, Wyo.

She was a member of the Foursquare Church and V.F.W. Auxiliary. The true love and enjoyment of her life were her children and grandchildren.

Inez is survived by her son: Butch Blue and his wife Becky of Bayard, daughters: Joyce Bowers and her husband Dallas of Bayard, Linda Flores and her husband Steve of Longmont, Colo., 8 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, step daughter: Bonita Brownfield and her husband Steve of St. George, UT., step-son: Gene Kuhns and his wife Sandy of Plymouth, CA., and numerous step-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, six brothers, five sisters and one step-son.

Ruth Edmunds

Ruth May Edmunds, 76 of Torrington, Wyo. and formerly of Bushnell, died on Jan. 28, 2003 at the United Medical Center West in Cheyenne, Wyo. Memorial services were Jan. 31 at Our Savior Lutheran Church with Reverend Marvin Temme officiating. Cremation took place. Those who wish may direct memorial contributions in Ruth's memory to the family for a memorial to be established at a later date.

She was born on May 15, 1926 in Dravonburg, Penn. the daughter of Carl and Virginia (Keenan) Haywood. She moved with her family to Bushnell when she was four years old. She grew up in Bushnell where she received her education, graduating from Bushnell High School in 1944. She then attended Kearney Teacher's College.

She married Alfred Edmunds on June 28, 1945 at Cheyenne, Wyo. Then while Alfred served in the Army Air Corps, Ruth taught for two years at a country school north of Bushnell. After his discharge, the couple moved around to numerous communities while Alfred worked construction. In 1963, they settled in Torrington. She was a homemaker and cared for many foster children in addition to her own. She received many awards from the State of Wyoming for raising foster children.

In 1970, Ruth went to work at the Torrington Telegram where she began as a reporter and wore many hats over the next 32 years. She continued to help out after her retirement in 2002.

Ruth was active with her children and grandchildren, enjoyed word puzzles, latchwork, collecting cows and had a collection of nearly 4000 magnets. She received the KGOS radio station "Mother of the Year" award in 1971. Perhaps one of her greatest joys was the annual Christmas Eve Party she and her husband held for nearly 20 years at their home. They hosted 50 to 60 children and adults who had no where to go. Santa came and everyone received a gift.

She is survived by her husband, Alfred of Torrington; three sons and daughters-in law, Roger and Bernie Edmunds of Torrington; Thomas and Glenda Edmunds of Meridan, Wyo.; Randy and Debi Edmunds of Torrington; and two daughters Linda Edmunds and her fiancÈ Tab Scofield of Torrington and Lori and her husband Earl Hoellen of Denver, Colo., and a sister, Wilma Lockwood of Bushnell. Other survivors include Angie Rinehalt of Torrington, a young woman who was like her own daughter from an early age; a foster daughter Pam Pride of Denver and numerous other foster children.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

The Colyer Funeral Home of Torrington is in charge of the arrangements.
