Wayne Henderson

Wayne Henderson, 72 of Bushnell, Neb. died unexpectedly at his home on Wednesday, September 4, 2002. Funeral Services were Sept. 7 at the chapel of the Cantrell Funeral Home in Kimball.

He was born on February 3, 1930 on a farm southeast of Kimball, Neb. to J.R. "Dick" and Bertha G. (Sands) Henderson. He was a farmer and rancher, but had to give up his cattle several years ago. He graduated from high school in Kimball in 1948.

He married Margaret Yung December 24, 1958 in Kimball. He lived his entire life on a farm in Kimball County. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and loved being with family.

He is survived by his wife Margaret; sons Kendall Henderson and wife Brenda of Scottsbluff, Neb., Keith Henderson of Gilbert, Ariz., Brian Henderson of Bushnell, Sharon Sewald and husband Al of North Platte, Neb., Laurel Lulf of Greeley, Colo., and Lanelle Shelby and husband Lyndle of Osceola, Iowa. Also surviving is sister Ruth Carlson of Kimball and ten grandchildren.

His parents and a brother Richard Allen preceded him in death.

Memorial gifts may be to the Bushnell First Responders. Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Eugene Schmidt

Eugene M. 'Gene' Schmidt, 92, a longtime area resident, passed away Thursday, September 5, 2002 at the Kimball County Hospital.

Funeral services were Sept. 10 at the First Lutheran Church in Potter, Neb. with Pastor Mary Frohs officiating. Burial was in the Potter cemetery.

Eugene Morgan Schmidt, the eldest son of Nicoli August and Sophie Albertine (Morgensen) Schmidt, was born on December 22, 1909 at Boelus, Nebr. He moved to Potter with his parents in 1918 and attended school in Boelus and then Potter and graduated as salutatorian in 1927. He was an alternate to West Point.

He set type for Herbert Stevens on the Potter Review and farmed for his father and himself on a small scale and for Ray Babcock at a fish hatchery in South Dakota.

On June 14, 1936, he married Cleo Belle Tourney at Sterling, Colo. They settled on a farm southwest of Potter where he lived until moving to Vista Villa in Kimball on April 11, 1999.

He was a member of the First Lutheran Church, the Flying Farmers. He was instrumental in the development of Vista Villa, was one of the first residents and was serving on the Memorial Garden committee there.

Survivors include sons Gary and wife Joyce of Potter, Larry of Pueblo, Colo. and Karl and wife Debbie of GreeIey, Colo.; daughters Norma Schmidt of Santa Fe, N.M. and Ava Jensen and husband Gordon of Scottsdale, Ariz.; 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, brother Wallace, sister Joyce, a daughter-in-law and a granddaughter.

Holechek Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Lee R. Boyd

Lee R. Boyd, 85 of Cheyenne, Wyo. and formerly of Kimball, died at his home on Sunday, September 8, 2002. Visitation hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thurs. Funeral Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 13 at the chapel of Cantrell Funeral Home in Kimball. Pastor M. L. Daves will officiate. Burial will be in the Kimball cemetery with military honors by Kimball VFW Post 2243.

He was born on December 1, 1916 in Paradise, Tex. to Clarence Woody and Louise (Lemme) Boyd. As a youth he spent a number of years in Oklahoma and graduated from high school at Sugden, Okla. He served with the U.S. Army and the Army Air Corp during WW II from 1942-1947 where he flew B-25 bombers. He retired from the active military with the rank of Captain and retired from the reserves as a Lt. Colonel.

He and Gladys I. Smith were married in 1942 in Colorado Springs, Colo. After the war the couple lived in Chase, Kan. until 1953 and later in Sterling, Colo. He worked for Neff Trucking as a bookkeeper and moved to Kimball in 1955. Gladys died on March 6, 1989.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Kimball and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He is survived by son Merl Boyd of Kimball, daughters, Arlene and husband Leo Koester of Kimball, Cheryl and husband Don Trofholz of Cheyenne, Wyo; brother William (Bill) Boyd of Duncan, OK, sisters, Trudy and husband Bill Hazen of Bartlesville, OK, Anna Doll Wiggins of Duncan, OK, Wanda Martin of Ft. Worth, TX, Georgia and husband Burt Gifford of Pearland, TX, Lou and husband Clarence Scruggs of Wichita Falls, TX, and Connie and husband Jim Virgadamo of Magnolia, TX; a sister-in-law; 5 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews

His parents, wife, two children, Gladys Lee and Lee Roy (Butchie) Boyd, Jr., brother Clarence Woody (Buddy) Boyd and sisters Ella Ruth Etheridge and Juanita Little, preceded him in death.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Senior Citizens Friendship Center of Kimball. The Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dorothea Grubbs

Dorothea L. Grubbs, 87 of Scottsbluff, Neb., died Wednesday, August 28, 2002 at the Heritage Health Care Center in Gering. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service was Aug. 31 at the Kimball cemetery with Rev. Scott Peterson of the First Presbyterian Church of Scottsbluff officiating.

She was born on July 28, 1915 in Oto, Iowa, to John and Anna (Peters) Saxen. On April 3, 1934 she and Virgil Doyle Grubbs were married in Dennison, Iowa and moved to Kimball shortly after.

In 1945 they moved to Scottsbluff. She owned and operated an answering service in her for over 20 years. She loved to sew and enjoyed cooking. She was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church of Scottsbluff.

She is survived by daughter Jan Albee of Centennial, Colo.; brother Frank Saxen and a sister Helen Rehmers, both of Kimball; a grandson, and two great grandsons.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband who died Sept. 13, 1996, and three sisters.

Memorial gifts may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Scottsbluff or to Heritage Health Care Center. The Cantrell Funeral Home of Kimball is in charge of arrangements.

Letha Davis

Letha Sarah Davis, 67 of Kimball died on Sunday, September 1, 2002 at the Kimball County Manor. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, September 5, at the Kimball County Manor. Deacon Bill Cota from the First Assembly of God Church will officiate.

Graveside services and burial will take place concurrently at 10:00 AM at the Riverview cemetery in Sutherland. Letha's son, Rev. Robert Davis will officiate at that service.

She was born on January 13, 1935 in Sutherland, Neb., to James Lester and Verna Ellen (Kirkendall) Johnston. She attended school in Sutherland and North Platte. She married Jack Dale Davis on October 23, 1954 in North Platte. Jack was killed in 1963 in an oil field accident near Kemmerer, Wyo.

She entered the Kimball County Manor in April 1994 were she has made her home since. Letha was a member of the Kimball Assembly of God Church. She loved music and was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister and aunt.

She is survived by sons, Jack Davis and his wife Linda of Washington, ILL, Rodney Davis of Hastings, Neb., Larry Davis and his wife Nadine of Utica, Neb. and Robert Davis and his wife Vicki, of Lincoln; daughter Crystal Davis of North Platte; seven grandchildren; brothers Ron Johnston and wife Dorothy of North Platte, John Robert Johnston and wife Shirley of Scottsbluff, Neb., Joseph Johnston and wife Ida of Seattle, Wash., and Mike Johnston and wife Bonnie of Wyoming.

Also surviving is her step-mother Lucille Johnston of Hawthorne, Fl., a half-sister Mary Margaret Ervin who lives overseas, and two sisters-in-laws.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, a brother, a sister and a half brother.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Kimball County Manor. The Cantrell Funeral Home of Kimball is in charge of Arrangements.

Lucy Bolin

Lucy E. Bolin, age 88, formerly of Banner County, died Friday, July 26, 2002 at Beverly Healthcare in Scottsbluff, Neb. Funeral Services were July 29 at the Hull United Methodist Church in Banner County, with Rev. Sheila Taylor and Pastor Mel Acheson officiating. Burial was at the Pleasant Hill cemetery.

She was born February 19, 1914, in Cheyenne, Wyo., to John E. and Edna (Parks) Craton of LaGrange, Wyo. and was the eldest of five sisters.

She graduated as salutatorian in 1931 from LaGrange. After attending Glendale Community College in California and Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln, she taught school at rural schools in Wyoming and Nebraska. She continued her education at the University of Wyoming.

She married Royal D. (Pat) Bolin May 15, 1937, in Scottsbluff. They farmed in the Hull Community in Banner County until his health forced them to retire. They traveled throughout the U.S. from 1968 until moving to Loveland, Colo. in 1989. She moved to Scottsbluff in 2000.

She served of the Spiritual Life Committee at the Good Samaritan Village, was a lifetime member of the Hull United Methodist Church and was a member of the United Methodist Women.

She is survived by her son and daughter in law R. Douglas and Joy Bolin of Banner County; daughter and son in law Valetta and Mel Schneider of Gering, Neb.; sisters, Mildred Mae and her husband L. Wayne Warner of Gering, Betty Spain of Loveland, Colo., and Francilia and her husband Herbert Johnson of Kimball; four grandchildren and two great-grandsons.

Her parents, husband, an infant sister and two infant grandsons preceded her in death.

Memorials have been established to the Hull United Methodist Church, to the Acheson Ministries or to the donor's choice.

Thelma Wyatt

Funeral services for Thelma E. Wyatt, 95, formerly of Banner County who passed away at the Northfield Villa Medical Center, July 25, 2002, will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church in Gering with Fr. Ed Newbury officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park.

She was born September 3, 1906, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. In 1907 she and her parents, William and Almeda Schwenck, moved by train to homestead five miles south of Bushnell, Neb. The family later moved to College View, Neb. for two years and returned to Bushnell where she graduated from high school in 1923.

She attended a teacher-training summer school at the University of Nebraska before teaching school in Banner County for three years.

On Nov. 11, 1925, she and L. D. "Shorty" Wyatt were married at Cheyenne, Wyo. That year she taught until a terrible blizzard closed the roads and the school. They resided on the Wyatt ranch in Banner County until moving to Northfield Vista in 1989. They had been married 67 years when Shorty passed away in 1992.

Technical advances she remembered during her life included when REA brought electricity to Banner County in 1940.

The couple helped establish the Good Shepherd of the Plains Episcopal Church in Harrisburg in 1961. She served on the Altar Guild and taught Sunday school many years and was a Pythian Sister. She was known for the pies she baked for the Harrisburg cafe.

She is survived by daughters, Evelyn W. Campbell, of Los Alamos, N.M. and Jocelyn A. Wyatt of Scottsbluff; son Richard L. Wyatt and Marlene of LaQuinta, Calif. and daughter-in-law, Gladys L. Wyatt of Harrisburg; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister Agnes Schwenck, son John, a daughter-in-law and son-in-law.

Memorials have been established to the Good Shepherd of the Plains Episcopal Church at Harrisburg or the donor's choice.

Jeanne Wasser

Jeanne Wasser, 70, of Lincoln, Neb. and formerly of Kimball, died July 24, 2002. She lived in Kimball in the 1970s. Services were Sat. at Roper & Sons Chapel in Lincoln and burial was in Wyuka cemetery.

She was born in Lincoln, Neb. Dec. 17, 1931 to Samuel Arthur and Vinna T. (Krick) Saddoris. She retired from landscape services at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She was a member of Eastern Star, Kimball and Husker Hummel Club in Lincoln.

Survivors include daughters and son-in-law, Debra D. and Randy Davis, and Peggy J. Wasser, and sons and daughters-in-law, David and Anne, Michael and Dianne, Ronald Jr., all Lincoln; brothers and sisters-in-law, William and Charlene Saddoris, Grand Island, Richard and Pat Saddoris, Durand, Wis.; sister and brother-in-law, Dawn and Ed Keech, Davey; nine grandchildren; nieces, nephews.

She is preceded in death by husband, infant son, Richard Lee, her parents and brother, Robert Saddoris.

Mary Harvey

Mary "Betty E. Harvey, 79, died July 18, 2002 in Pueblo, Colo. She was born in Kimball May 11, 1923.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Harker Harvey and two sons, William and Thomas.

She is survived by daughter Mary Ann (Charles) Bonemelli, son Harold, 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

Services were at St. Joseph's Church and burial was in Imperial Memorial Gardens in Pueblo.

Mary Lonsdale

Mary Anne Lonsdale, 76, of Bushnell, Neb. died at Beverly Health Center in Sidney, Neb. on Monday, July 22, 2002. Funeral services were July 24 at the Gehrig & Son Funeral Home in Sidney with Rev. Roger Gillming of the Calvary United Methodist Church in Bushnell officiating. Burial was in the Greenwood cemetery in Sidney.

She was born in Sidney on May 25, 1926 to Fred and Elizabeth (Loebe) Bell. She attended and graduated from the Sidney Public Schools in 1944. She married John Lonsdale in Sidney on Sept. 19, 1945 and they lived in Sidney for 31 years before moving to Bushnell where they had lived for the past 45 years.

She worked for the Bell Telephone Co. while in Sidney and then worked as a cook at the Bushnell Schools. She enjoyed fishing and making baked goods and time with her grand- and great grandchildren.

Her parents, one brother, Don Bell and an infant brother preceded her in death.

Survivors include her husband of Bushnell; sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Geraldine Lonsdale of Sharon Springs, Kan., Fred and Debbie Lonsdale of Pine Bluffs, Wyo. and Don and Pam Lonsdale of Kimball; daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Keith Hickman of Pine Bluffs, Wyo.; sister Betty Makey of Gurley and brother Bill Bell of Hutchinson, Kan.; 13 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Gehrig & Son Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Memorials may be given to the Cancer Society, in care of Don Lonsdale at 703 S. Nadine, Kimball, Neb. 69145 or Memorial Health Care Hospice.

Freda Farmer

Freda Farmer, 92, of Kimball, died July 22, 2002. She was in the care of Hospice of Larimer County at McKee Medical Center in Loveland, Colo.

A celebration of her life will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 25 at the Chapel of Cantrell Funeral Home in Kimball with the Reverend Emily Cardin will officiate. Burial will be at the Kimball cemetery.

She was born November 21, 1909 in Ainsworth, Neb. to Herman and Amelia (Trumm) Waits, the oldest of three children. She taught school for a year before marrying Rudolph Roggasch. They operated several cafes across Nebraska, including the Manhattan CafÈ in Kimball and later in Dix. He died in March 1950. She married her second husband, Jess Farmer, in October 1966, who died in February 1981.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Kimball and the Rebecca Lodge in Dix. She took great pleasure in baking pies for friends, inviting them to dinner or sharing bouquets of her beautiful peonies.

She is survived by six children, Althea Hruza of Potter, NE, Donna LeMaster of Wichita, KS, Lynda Brock of Cottondale, FL, Doris Larsen and husband Richard of Papillion, NE, Vonda Fleagle and husband Gordon of Northglenn, CO, and Robert Roggasch and wife Jean of San Antonio, TX; 25 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

Her parents, a brother, a sister, two husbands and her eldest son Ed Roggasch preceded her in death.

Memorial gifts may be made to Hospice of Larimer County, 7604 Colland Dr., Ft. Collins, CO 80525. The Cantrell Funeral Home of Kimball is in charge of arrangements.
