Howard H. Herian, 73

(Apr. 25) ALLIANCE - Howard Harold "Howdy" Herian, 73, died Tuesday, April 23, 2002, at the Black Hills Health Care System hospital at Hot Springs, S.D. He was born May 28, 1938 at Alliance. His parents were Harold and Theresa "Tillie" (Zimmerer) Herian.

He lived in the sand hills area most of his life. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Carbenero from 1957 to 1961. He married Berneice J. Votruba on Sept. 11, 1958, at Honolulu, Hawaii. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. He will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife, Berneice; children, Jody and Jeff Meer of Lakeside, Janeice Read of San Diego, Calif., Joe and Brenda Herian of Alliance, and Jay and Angie Herian of Thornton, Colo.; and seven grandchildren, Jennifer, Jessica, Jamie, Jake, Heather, Tanner and Courtney. One brother, Ken Herian of Otis, Ore.; two nieces; one nephew; and one uncle, Don Herian and family also survive him. His parents preceded him in death.

Cremation has taken place. No services will be held as per his request. A memorial has been established to the Howard Herian Memorial Fund, First National Bank, 124 W. Third St., Alliance, NE 69301.

Robert S. Allen, 80

(Apr. 26) ALLIANCE - Robert S. Allen, 80, of Alliance died Tuesday, April 24, 2001, at Good Samaritan Health Care Center. He was born August 19, 1920 at Denver, Colo. to Dr. Robert and Cecil (McAnlin) Allen.

He married Irene Hayward on June 3, 1955 at Denver. Most of his working life was spent in the cattle industry. He ranched near Gunnison, Colo., co-owned Schmidt-Allen Livestock Supply at the Denver stockyards, and worked at Shalco Cattle Company at Minatare. 20 years ago he moved to Alliance and was the city building inspector before retiring. He was active in the Alliance Trap Club, Silver Wings Fraternity in Denver and a 50-year Masonic Lodge member.

His survivors are his wife, Irene, children, Charles Allen of Rogers, Ark., Susan Stein of Aurora, Colo., Nancy Kreider of Fort Collins, Colo., and John Allen of Sante Fe, N.M., a sister Louise Easterly of Lake Havasu City, Ariz. and a grandson, Jesse Allen.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, April 28, at the Bates-Gould Chapel with the Reverend Walter Cline officiating. Memorials may be given to the Alliance Trap Club or to the First Christian Church. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Elizabeth J. Evans, 76

(Apr. 26) ASHBY - Elizabeth Jane Evans, 76, died Thursday, April 25, 2002, at Box Butte General Hospital at Alliance. She was born Aug. 29, 1925, at Ashby to Odell and Mae (Brumbaugh) Crouse.

She was married to James E. Evans on Oct. 18, 1947, at Alliance. She was a lifetime Ashby resident and was the Postmaster of the Ashby post office for 40 years. She was a member of the V.F.W. and American Legion Auxiliary. She is survived by her husband, James; sons Ron of Kearney, and Randy of Kansas City, Mo.; daughters Patricia Berney of Ashby, Judy Gottlob of Grand Island; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She also is survived by brothers, George Crouse of Mullen, Bob Crouse of Hyannis, Bill Crouse of Ashby, and Patrick Crouse of Alliance.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 27, at the Ashby Cemetery with Ron Evans officiating. Memorials may be given to Disabled Veterans Association. Bates-Gould Funeral Home of Alliance is in charge of arrangements.

Lowell E. Yordy, 68

(Apr. 27) RUSHVILLE - Lowell E. Yordy, 68, died Wednesday, April 25, 2001, at Rapid City, S.D. He was born July 11, 1932, at Pontiac, Ill. His parents were Omer and Irene (Dellenbaugh) Yordy.

He was a member of Living Legends, and was active in the Legion baseball program, especially umpiring.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Yordy of Rushville; son Tom Yordy of Martin, S.D.; daughters Lori Starke of Minatare and Debi Keim of Bridgeport; and ten grandchildren. He also is survived by his sister Barbara Harland of Chenoa, Ill.

Mr. Yordy's funeral will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, April 28, at Chamberlain Mortuary of Rushville, with Rev. Ed Mullican officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Memorials may be to the Kidney Association in Lowell Yordy's name, in care of Chamberlain Mortuary, P.O. Box 970, Chadron, NE 69337. Chamberlain Mortuary of Rushville is in charge of arrangements.

James F. Parkin, 60

(Apr. 27) HEMINGFORD - James F. Parkin of Hemingford died Wednesday, April 24, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital, S.D. He was 60. He was born August 15, 1941, in Alliance, Neb., to Loyal and Wilma (Winslow) Parkin.

He married Kristine Simone in 1962 and they had one daughter, Joyce. He later was married to Karen Smith. After graduation from Hemingford High School he served in the United States Army from 1959 until 1962. He then attended Milford Technical School. He worked in appliance repair in Lincoln for two years. He became a sales representative for a dairy supply company in Wisconsin and then later worked as a sales representative for a commercial chemical supply company. His health forced him into early retirement and he returned to Hemingford in 1986 and worked on area farms. Jim was elected to the Village Board of Trustees of the Village of Hemingford for his first four-year term in 1996 and was re-elected for an additional four-year term in 2000. He was Hemingford's representative on the Solid Waste Agency of Northwest Nebraska board and also represented Hemingford in connection with the Nebraska Municipal Power Pool and served as a representative on the Nebraska Municipal Power Poolâs Public Alliance for Community Energy. He also served on numerous local committees. He freely gave hours of his time to the community by attending meetings and reading and studying large amounts of information needed for making good decisions. Jim took his responsibility to represent the citizens of Hemingford very seriously and cared deeply about the welfare of his community. He was a member of the St. Bridget Catholic Church and the American Legion Post No. 9. He was a Past County Commander and was on the Post Executive Committee from 1996-1998. He also was a member of the Post Honor Guard.

His survivors include his daughter Joyce Clough of England, stepson Roy Smith of Lincoln, mother Wilma Parkin of Hemingford, brothers Robert of Laramie, Wyo.; and Donald of Wheatland, Wyo.; 12 nieces and nephews. His father and two sisters, Dorothy Perry and Betty McIntosh preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 1, at 10 a.m. at St. Bridget Catholic Church in Hemingford. Father Vince Parsons will officiate. Burial with military rites will be in the Hemingford Cemetery. Wake services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 30, at St. Brigdet Church. Friends may call at the Bates-Gould Funeral Home in Hemingford from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, and Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and at the wake service. Memorials may be given to the Kidney Foundation at 4901 Main St.,Suite 200, Kansas City, MO, 64112-2674. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Allen M. Jines, 45

(April 28) ALLIANCE - Allen "AJ" M. Jines, 45, died Saturday, April 26, 2003, at Highland Park Care Center. He was born March 1, 1958, at Alliance to Harold "Smokey" and Beverly (Lee) Jines.

On Aug. 8, 1981 he married Linda Hall. To this union three children were born, Jessica, Samantha and Tyler. They survive at the family home. He also is survived by his mother Beverly; sister and brother-in-law, Cheryl and Lerick Johnson of Alliance and their children Derek and Carley; father-in-law and mother-in-law Jon and Johanna Hall of Alliance, sister-in-law Sandi Mann of Lakeside and her children Jake and Joe; and brother-in-law Ward Hall of Las Vegas, Nev. HIs father preceded him in death. Allen worked 20 years for the Burlington Northern Railroad and served on the Board of Directors for the Black Diamond Rails Club. He was active and enjoyed volleyball, softball, snow skiing and many other sports. He remained an avid volleyball fan all his life.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 30, at the United Methodist Church, with Revs. Jerry Mercer and Ron Nuss-Warren officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials for his children's education fund may be sent in care of the family at 904 Black Hills, Alliance; or to Prairie Haven Hospice, 2409 Box Butte, Alliance. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Leona M. Merches, 82

(April 28) YORK - Leona M. "Lee" Merches, 82, died Friday, April 25, 2003, at The Hearthstone Care Center at York. She was born on July 21, 1920, at Arkansaw, Wis., to Raymond and Helen (Busby) Martin.

She graduated from High School at White Bear Lake, Minn., in 1939, and then attended the former Minnesota Bible College at Minneapolis, Minn. for one year. She was married to Howard J. Merches on March 26, 1942, at Minneapolis, and moved with her husband while he served Churches of Christ including. The couple moved to York in March of 1991 following Howard's retirement from the Ministry. She was a member of the East Hill Church of Christ at York She is survived by her husband, Howard J. Merches of York; three children, Susanne (Arthur) Keller of York, Mark (Carol) Merches of Davenport, Iowa, and Kathy (Bruce) McGee of Columbus, Mont.; seven grandchildren; and fifteen great-grandchildren. She also is survived by one brother, Raymond Martin of N. St. Paul, Minn.; and two sisters: Mary (Earl) Thompson of Roberts, Wis. and Alice (Charles) Tharp of Esparto, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Merches' funeral will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 30, at the East Hill Church of Christ at York. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the House of Compassion, 830 W. Center St., Rochester, MN 55901, the York Area Senior Center, or Larsen Christian Academy at York. Lewis Funeral Chapel of York is in charge of arrangements.

Dale H. Price, 70

(April 28) PIERCE - Dale H. Price, 70, died Monday, April 21, 2003, at Mercy Hospital, Sioux City, Iowa. He was born June 10, 1932, at Alliance, to Glen and Ada Pauline Price.

He graduated from Scottsbluff High School in 1950, and from Nebraska Wesleyan University in 1958. He also attended Seminary for a brief time. He served nearly 11 years in the U.S. Navy as a Radio Repairman. He married Darlene Chapman on July 9, 1977, at Norfolk. He was a member of the United Methodist Church and Pierce American Legion, and a past member of Masonic Lodge 187 at Alliance and Phi Kappa Tau fraternity at Wesleyan. He is survived by his wife, Darlene; three brothers, Dwaine (Sharon) Price of Omaha, Melvin (Joy) Price of Hemingford and Doug (Judy) Price of Alliance; and one sister, Carol (Jim) Bruns of Hemingford.

Mr. Price's funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 28, at the United Methodist Church at Pierce, with Rev. Carol Jean Stapleton officiating. Burial will be in Prospect View Cemetery at Pierce, with military rites by Tomek Atto Post 72 American Legion. Stonacek memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Delmer B. Galyen, 73

(Apr. 29) HAY SPRINGS - Delmer B. Galyen, 73, died Friday, April 26, 2002, at his home. He was born Aug. 17, 1928, at Seneca to Melvin B. and Opal (Allen) Galyen.

He married Ella M. Kutschara Nov. 6, 1949, at Alliance. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church. He is survived by his wife Ella M. Galyen of Hay Springs; son, Larry Galyen of Gillette, Wyo.; daughters, Diana Mattson of Pierce, and JoElla Fritzler of Alliance; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He also is survived by his mother, Opal Sterek of Sheridan, Wyo.; brothers, Macky Galyen of Bell Fourche, S.D., and Jay Galyen of Alliance; sisters, Rosalie Ackerman of Alliance, and Isabell Roop of Sheridan. He was preceded in death by his father, and one sister.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Monday, April 29 at the Zion Lutheran Church at Hay Springs, with Pastor Michael Wittrock officiating. Burial will be in the Hay Springs Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Hay Springs Ambulance Fund or the Zion Lutheran Church. Bates-Gould Funeral Home of Alliance is in charge of arrangements.

Livonia Tucker, 87

(Apr. 29) AURORA, Colo. - Livonia H. Johnson Tucker, 87, died of cancer April 26, 2002, at the Aurora Medical Center. She was born July 21, 1914 at Ravenna. Her parents were Charles and Leona (Keeley) Liedloff.

She lived in the Des Moines, Iowa, area until the family moved to Alliance when she was 16. She graduated from Alliance High School in 1932. She was married to Burrell B. Johnson in 1935 in Dawes County. On Oct. 31, 1979, she was married to Thomas Tucker of St. Joseph, Mo., where she lived for many years. She moved to Aurora following his death in 1995. She was a lifelong member of the Alliance Country Club. She is survived by her children, Larry (Janet) Johnson of Omaha, Connie Foreman of Glen Wood Springs, Colo., Gary (Suzanne) Johnson of Littleton, Colo., Ginger, (Pete) Szabo of Aurora, Beverly (Danny) Kosloski of Lansing, Mich., Debi (John) Bowenkamp, Prior lake, Minn., and Diana (Lynn) Maloney of Pierce; 14 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Her parents, husband, two brothers, one sister and two sons preceded her in death.

Mrs. Tucker's funeral will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday, May 1, at the Meierhoffer-Fleman Chapel at St. Joseph, Mo. Interment will be in the St. Joseph Memorial Garden. Memorials may be sent to the Denver Dumb Friends League, 2080 S. Quebec St., Aurora, CO 80231-3298; or The American Cancer Society local chapter.

Henry C. Leon, 78

(April 29) LONG BEACH, Calif. - Henry C. Leon, 78, former Alliance resident, died recently. He was born June 1, 1924, at Alliance to Juanita and Ysmail Leon.

He graduated from Alliance High School, and served in the military in World War II. He was employed by Douglas Aircraft until his retirement. He is survived by brothers David Leon of Alliance, Leonard Leon, Salvador Leon and John Leon, all of California; and sister Henrietta of California. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel, and brothers Lewis Leon and Ysmail Leon Jr.

Mr. Leon's memorial service was Monday, April 21, at Long Beach.

Gary T. Bertelsen, 59

(Apr. 30) CHADRON - Gary Thomas Bertelsen, 59, of Chadron died Friday, April 27, 2001, at Chadron. He was born Jan. 1, 1942, at Breckenridge, Minn. His parents were Thomas and Catherine (Schmit) Bertelsen.

He grew up near Fairmount, N.D. and graduated from high school there in 1959. He married Judy Laske in 1962. He was a laborer and manager at Fairmount Elevator, and then was the owner. After selling the business, he worked for the City of Fairmount and later in agriculture. He moved to Chadron in 1989, and married Martha (Aukes) Jacobson in January 1989. He worked as a ranch manager until he retired.

He is survived by his wife, Martha of the home; one son, Jeff Bertelsen of Oshkosh, Wis.; one stepson Dave Jacobson of Fairmount; two step-daughters, Carol Hills of Milbank, S.D., and Becky Tracy of Fairmount; and three step-grandchildren. He also is survived by his mother, Catherine Bertelsen of Fairmount; four brothers, Joe Bertelsen of St. Paul, Minn., Jim Bertelsen of Wahpeton, N.D., Curt Bertelsen of Hankinson, N.D., and Rick Bertelsen of Fairmount; and three sisters, Kathy Hills and Teri Church of Fairmount, and RoseMary Miller of Campbell, Minn.

Mr. Bertelsen's funeral will be at 2 p.m., Tuesday, May 1, at Chamberlain Chapel, with Father Ed Cortney officiating. A memorial has been established for Chadron Hospice Care. Donations may be sent to Chamberlain Chapel, P. O. Box 970, Chadron, NE 69347. Chamberlain Chapel of Chadron is in charge of arrangements.

Walter E. Carter, 72

(Apr. 30) GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Walter E. Carter, 72 of Grand Junction, Colo., died April 17, 2001, at St. Mary's hospital at Grand Junction. He was born August 2, 1928 at Council Bluffs, Iowa. His parents were Ora anc Clarrisa (Hand) Carter.

He grew up at Hemingford, and graduated from Hemingford High School in 1947. He married Imogene Cruse on Jan. 6, 1948, in Texas. He worked in the Soda Ash Mine at Green River, Wyo., until his retirement in 1990. He and his wife moved to Grand Junction in 1999.

He is survived by his wife Imogene of the home; four sons, Steven Carter of Midland, Tex., Daniel Carter of Las Vegas, Nev., Ted Carter of Green River, Wyo., and Thomas Carter of Clifton, Colo.; one daughter Linda Boulden of Gateway, Colo.; thirteen grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He also is survived by two sisters, Grace Rose of Alliance, and Lillian Tuma of Twin Falls, Idaho.

Memorials may be sent to the American Diabetes Association, 2480 W. 26th Ave., No. 120B, Denver, CO 80211. Mr. Carter's funeral was Friday, April 20 at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary.
