Loree Taylor

Loree C. (Lierman) Taylor, formerly of Kimball, died April 6, 2002 in Oceanside, Calif. Private family graveside services were July 18 at the Seward cemetery in Seward, Nebr.

She was born on January 3, 1934 in Seward to Henry Robert and Leona (Peterson) Lierman. At the age of three, she moved to Kimball, Nebr. with her family and attended school here. On January 3. 1950, she married Randall Taylor in Kimball.

For the past 10 years, she lived in Oceanside where she was the director of personal for the J. M. Peters, Construction Company in Irvine, Calif.

Her parents, brothers Herbert and Chester, an infant brother, sisters Violet Blank and Elsie Brungardt, and son Jeffrey Taylor in 1997 preceded her in death.

She is survived by her husband of Oceanside; sons, Marc of Oceanside and Bryan and Jennifer Taylor of Yerington, Nev.; sister and brother-in-law, Jane and Richard Tomandl of Mobile, Ala., two grandsons and other relatives.

Helen Richards

Helen Pearl Richards, 79 of Kimball died on Wednesday, July 10, 2002 at Memorial Health Care in Sidney, Neb. Funeral Services were Saturday, July 13, at the Chapel of the Cantrell Funeral Home in Kimball with the Rev. Roger Gillming officiating. Burial was in the Kimball cemetery.

She was born on June 18, 1923 in Fullerton, Neb., to Winfield and Anna Pearl (Penick) Anderson. She and her family moved to Banner County in 1926. They later moved to Bushnell, Neb. when Helen was in high school and she graduated from Bushnell High School.

She was married to Jack Richards and he preceded her in death. She worked as a waitress in Kimball and also had been a cook at the Headstart School. She worked at the Kimball Laundry, the hospital in Scottsbluff and various other places. She was a life long member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Bushnell and attended services as long as her health permitted. She was a member of the Kimball Senior Citizens Opportunity Center, where she volunteered her time, and the Moonbeam Extension Club.

She is survived by her brother, Deroy Anderson of Kimball; sister, Lorene Shaw of Kimball and numerous nieces and nephews.

Her parents and a sister Roberta Robb preceded her in death.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Calvary United Methodist Church of Bushnell. Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jeffrey Broyles

Jeffrey L. "Jeff" Broyles, 41 of Dix, died July 12, 2002 at United Medical Center-West in Cheyenne, Wyoming. A funeral service was Monday, July 15 at the Chapel of Cantrell Funeral Home in Kimball with Pastor Mel Davies officiating. Cremation took place after the funeral.

He was born on July 22, 1960 in Sterling, Colo., to Robert and Janice (Williams) Broyles, Sr. He and his family moved to Dix while Jeff was in school and he graduated from the Dix High School. He married Tammy Donovan on April 19, 1992 in Sioux City, Iowa.

He worked as a trucker for Broyles Trucking and retired from driving truck in 1991 due to ill health. He was baptized and a member of the First Baptist Church of Kimball. He enjoyed working with model cars, boats and airplanes and especially enjoyed fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Tammy and son, Andrew Broyles; and his mother, all of Dix; brother, Robert Broyles, Jr. of Bakersfield, Calif.; grandfathers, Bill Collier of Salt Lake, Utah and Hook Williams of Riverton, Wyo.

His father, an infant sister, and grandmothers Alberta Collier and Eva Williams preceded him in death.

Contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice. Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Henry Jennings, III

Henry B. Jennings, III, 82, of Leisure World, Ariz., formerly of Kimball, died June 27, 2002. Cremation has taken place. Graveside services will be Saturday, July 27, at 12:30 p.m. at the Kimball cemetery. The Reverend Ron Nuss-Warren of the Kimball Presbyterian Church will officiate.

He was born on April 7, 1920 in Council Bluffs, Iowa, where he graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1939. He met and married Marianna Fink in 1944. They moved to Kimball to begin a career in farming. They had three children, Cindy, Butch and Bill.

Henry later married Dorothy Halcomb, adding children, Kathie and Rob to the family. The Jenningses retired and moved to Mesa, Ariz. Henry was active in the Masons, and was a Past Master, and a program chairman; and served as a Chaplain of the Shrine. He attended Velda Rose United Methodist Church where he served as an usher.

He is survived by his wife Dorothy; daughters, Cynthia Smith of Scottsdale, Ariz. and Kathie Linn of Albuquerque, NM; sons, Henry B. Jennings, IV and his wife Kay of Missoula, Mont., William Jennings of Choteau, Mont., and Robert Halcomb and wife Donna of Denver, Colo.; 14 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; sister Ann Walters of Council Bluffs, Iowa; 3 nieces; and caregiver Brenda Donnellan of Apache Junction, Ariz.

Memorial gifts may be made to a charity of the donor's choice. The Cantrell Funeral Home of Kimball is in charge of local arrangements.

Donald Johnson

Donald Johnson, 55 of Bushnell died at Memorial Health Care Center in Sidney, Neb. on Monday, July 1, 2002. Cremation has taken place. He had requested that no funeral service or visitation be held.

He was born on July 13 1946 in Greeley, Colo., to Donald and Iwona (Warner) Johnson.

He attended school in both Evans and Greeley, graduating from high school in Greeley. He attended trade school for two years. He and Donna Cooper were married on Sept. 10, 1965 in Greeley. They moved to Bushnell 2 1/2 years ago. He began working in the Cabela's Distribution Center in Sidney at that time.

He is a past member of the Pro Rodeo Cowboys Association. He had also owned and operated his own carnival concession. He enjoyed being outdoors and country life and his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Donna of Bushnell; his mother, Iwona Johnson of Greeley; son, Justin Johnson of Lakewood, Colo.; daughters, Traci Johnson of Aurora, Colo., and Heidi Rawlings and her husband Gregory of Kimball; step daughter, Stephanie Hayes and her husband Cliff of Greeley; brothers, Earl Johnson of Greeley and Paul Cain and his wife Kathy of Midway, Wyo.; sister, Helen Love and her husband John of LaSalle, Colo.; seven grandchildren and one step grandchild.

His father preceded him in death.

The Cantrell Funeral Home of Kimball is in charge of arrangements.

Lawrence Young

A memorial service for Lawrence W. Young, 90 of Kimball, who died on June 24, 2002 will be held on Thursday, July 11, 2002 at 7:00 p.m. at the Chapel of the Cantrell Funeral Home in Kimball. The Reverend Roger Gillming will officiate. Cremation has taken place and interment of the remains will be at the Kimball cemetery in a private family service.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Kimball Lions Club. The Cantrell Funeral Home of Kimball is in charge of arrangements.

Olga Vrtatko

Olga Vrtatko, 91 of Sidney, died Saturday June 29, 2002 at the Sidney Memorial Health Extended Care Center. A Graveside Service was at the Dix Rural cemetery July 3 with the Father Robert Karnish of St. Joseph's Catholic Church officiating.

She was born in Chicago on September 1, 1910, the second child of Stephan and Barbara (Nejedly) Vrtatko. She grew up on a farm near Howells Neb., graduating from Regis College of Denver, CO. She was employed by the U.S. Government in Chicago, New York City, Washington DC, Denver and Las Vegas, N.M., working as a social worker for the State Dept.

Her parents and two brothers, James and Charles, preceeded her in death.

Survivors include her cousins, George and Ellen Vrtatko of Dix, Neb., James Vrtatko of Dix, NE Rodney & Chris Vrtatko of Banner County, Neb.

Rosalie Johnson

Rosalie Anne Johnson Sun City West, died June 24, 2002.

A funeral mass will be held at 1:30pm, Friday, June 28 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Sun City West.

She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Clement and Frances Lee (Pulio) Calabrese. After studying to become a registered nurse, Rosalie served in the Army Nurse Corps during WWII at the rank of Second Lieutenant. She met and married Captain Arthur Joseph Johnson of Nebraska in June of 1945. For the next 42 years they raised their family on a wheat ranch in Kimball County, Neb.

She moved to Arrowhead Ranch in 1987 where she was active with the Glendale Women's Club, the Glendale Library, Welcome Wagon, St. Helen's Church and was a substitute school nurse for several northwest school districts.

She has been a resident of Sun City West since 1995 where she volunteered for the Sundome, participated in the Clown Club, the SCW Variety show and enjoyed tap dancing.

She is survived by her loving daughter, Marleejean Johnson Perez of Peoria, Ariz, son Arthur J. Johnson Jr. and wife Judy, sister Martha Mandrake of Norristown, Pa., three grandchildren and two sets of grand-twins.

She is preceded in death by her husband Arthur, infant daughter Janice Lee, brother Anthony Calabrese and her parents.

Contributions can be made to Westside Crisis Center-a beautiful refuge for abused, neglected or abandoned children at PO Box 844, Glendale, Ariz. 85311 or the American Cancer Society. Heritage Funeral Chapel made arrangements.

Elizabeth Eastman

Elizabeth Gailey Eastman, 85 of Scottsbluff, formerly of Kimball, died at the Residency Care Center on Monday, June 24, 2002. Funeral Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, June 27, 2002 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Kimball. The Rev. Roger Gillming will officiate. PEO and Eastern Star services will take place at the church. Burial will be in the Kimball cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 1 to 8 p.m. and on Thursday morning from 10 a.m. until noon.

She was born on November 11, 1916 in Moville, Iowa to Ralph E. and Ruth E. (Howard) Gailey. She attended school in Laurel, NE and attended college at Wayne State College and the University of Nebraska earning a BS degree in Nursing in 1943.

She and N.L. (Nate) Eastman were married June 1, 1942. In 1944 Nate went to fight in WW II and Elizabeth moved to Kimball with the first of their six sons. She was a nurse at the Kimball Hospital and a long time nurse with the Kimball School system.

She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church since 1946, PEO Chapters DT and GN since 1949 and the Order of the Eastern Star Truth Chapter 262 since 1953. She was Kimball's Outstanding Homemaker in 1995.

She is survived by six sons and their wives, Jug and Colleen Eastman of Westminster, CO, Andy and Audrey Eastman of Topeka, KS, Bill and Cathy Eastman of Scottsbluff, Neb. Jim and Ruth Eastman of Niwot, CO, John and Lydia Eastman of Sidney, and Tom and Pat Eastman of Scottsbluff; and 11 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Nate and brother Morton Gailey.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Trinity U.M. Church or to a charily of the donor's choice. The Cantrell Funeral Home of Kimball is in charge of arrangements.

Randy L. Nielsen

Randy L. Nielsen, 46 of Kimball died Friday, June 21, 2002 in Scotts Bluff County. Funeral Services were Tuesday, June 25, 2002 at the First English Lutheran Church in Kimball with Pastor Dwayne Hunzeker officiating. Burial was Wednesday in Memorial cemetery, Fremont, Neb.

He was born August 20, 1955 in Fremont to Lee and Carolyn (Miller) Nielsen. He graduated from Arlington High School in 1973, the University of Nebraska in 1977 and the University's College of Law in 1980.

He married Nancy Wilkinson in Fremont January 6, 1978. They made their home in Lincoln while Randy finished law school. In December 1980 they moved to Kimball where Randy had his own law firm until his death.

He was a member of First English Lutheran Church of Kimball serving on various committees. He was a member of various organizations including the Nebraska Bar Association, and a member of the Kimball Country Club where he served as treasurer for several years. He was a member of the Cosmopolitan Club, the Lincoln Lions Club and Masonic Lodge 294 AF & AM. He also served as a member of Forward Kimball Industries (FKI).

He is survived by his wife Nancy of Kimball, daughter Jessie Nielsen of Lincoln and son Chris Nielsen of Kimball; his parents Lee and Carolyn Nielsen, his grandmother Alice Nielsen, and a brother Tim Nielsen, all of Fremont; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother and paternal grandfather.

Memorial Gifts may be made to the First English Lutheran Church. The Cantrell Funeral Home of Kimball is in charge of arrangements.

Lawrence Young

Lawrence William Young, 90 of Kimball died on Monday June 24, 2002 at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. Cremation will take place and a memorial service will be held at a later date that will be announced.

He was born March 24, 1912 in Kimball to William Theodore and Olive (Vogler) Young. He grew up in this area and was a life long resident. He graduated from Kimball County High School and attended and graduated from the University of Nebraska.

He started worked with his father in the insurance business several years. He then became involved in a partnership with Hal Hagen and they owned and operated the International Harvester Dealership in Kimball for a number of years. He later became the manager of the Bull Canyon Ranch in Banner County which he did until he retired.

He and Velma Faye Atwood were married in Cheyenne, WY on July 22, 1936.

He was a member of the Kimball Lions Club for 65 years and was awarded the Melvin T. Jones award for being the longest continuous member of a Lions organization in the state of Nebraska. He served the Kimball club twice as president with 50 years between the two terms. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. He was a member of the National Bison Association and was an avid "rock hound" and a member of the Kimball Rock Club.

He and Velma traveled extensively in the United States and abroad.

He is survived by a son Larry and his wife Stephanie Young of Castle Rock, Co.; daughters Sharon and her husband Richard Soderquist of San Antonio, TX and Lana Ford of Rutherfordton, N.C; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Velma on May 25, 1999, brothers Bob and Bud and infant Thomas, and sisters Kathryn King and Marguerite Young.

Memorial gifts may be to the Kimball Lions Club. The Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Evelyn Birdwell

Evelyn Rose Birdwell, 60 of Kimball died June 20, 2002 at Kimball Health Services. Recitation of the Rosary was Friday at the funeral home and Mass of Christian Burial was Saturday, June 22 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Kimball with the Reverend Francis Curran as celebrant. Cremation followed.

She was born on May 8, 1942 in Scott City, Kan. to Albert Ross and Edith (Koestel) Kent. She moved in the 1950's from Kansas to Kimball. She married Leon Birdwell on June 6, 1960.

She had been a resident of the Kimball Manor for the past two and a half years. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

When her health permitted, she was an avid bowler. She also loved playing bingo and Wheel of Fortune while living at the Manor.

She is survived by her father, Walter Kinderknecht of Kimball; son Wally Birdwell and his wife Pam of Kimball; daughter Shellon Anderson and her husband Jeff of Kimball; two brothers, Ross Kent and his wife Judy of Douglas, Wyo., and Dale Kent and his wife Teresa of Midland, Tex.; one half sister, Margaret Belase of Carnegie, Okla.; and four grandchildren.

Her mother preceded her in death.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Kimball County Manor.
