Mary VanPelt

Mary Emma (Woten) VanPelt, 91, of Banner County, died May 31, 2002 at the Heritage Health Care Center, Gering, Neb.

Funeral services were June 5 at the Gering Memorial Chapel with Pastor Don Mathis officiating. Burial was at the West Lawn cemetery in Gering.

She was born on October 27, 1910, at Cedar Rapids, Nebr. to Hugh and Mary Ella (Purdy) Woten. She moved to Cheyenne County. Nebraska when she was five years old and graduated from Banner County High School in 1928. She attended nurses training at St. Lukes Hospital in Denver, Colo.. She worked at the Kimball Hospital and a hospital in Littleton, Colo..

She married Roy VanPelt on September 6, 1932 at Kimball, Neb. and they had two children. They farmed and ranched in Banner County for fifty years and raised registered Hereford cattle. She was a volunteer at the information desk at the Regional West Medical Center for several years.

She was a member of the Women of the Moose Lodge, Chapter 1398 and a past member of the Pythian Sister of Harrisburg and the Eagles Auxiliary of Scottsbluff.

She is survived by her daughter Elsie Sparks of Gering, Neb., brother Myron Woten of Potter, Neb., sister Gladys Pierce of Scottsbluff, Neb., five grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Roy on January 13, 1983, son William Hugh (Bill) VanPelt, sisters Vera Woten and Grace White; brothers Dell and Robert Woten, two grandsons, one infant grandchild and two infant great grandchildren.

Memorials shall be sent to the Panhandle Humane Society, 126 South Beltline Highway West, Scottsbluff, Neb. 69361. Gering Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Dr. Hal E. Hagen

Dr. Hal E. Hagen, 80, of Mankato, Minn. died June 1, 2002 at Immanuel-St. Joseph Hospital. He is the brother of Robert Hagen of Kimball.

Services are June 6 at Grace Lutheran Church and burial was at Ft. Snelling National cemetery. He was a former professor at Minnesota State University.

He was born March 20, 1922 to Hal and Sadie (Lukin) Hagen at Kankakee, Ill. He is survived by a daughter and her family, brother Robert Hagen of Kimball, and several nieces and nephews. His wife preceded him in death.

Landkramer Johnson Boman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Syd Gillming

Lucinda Gayle "Syd" Gillming, 47, of Bushnell, died unexpectedly Friday morning, May 24, 2002 in Banner County. A memorial service was Tuesday, May 28 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Kimball. Cremation was to take place and burial of the remains will be in Prairie Center at a later date.

She was born August 25, 1954 in Superior, Neb. a daughter of E.B. and Ona (Cadwallader) Jantz. She grew up in Superior and graduated from high school there. She attended Kearney State College. She and Roger Gillming were married in Kearney, Neb. on January 6, 1974. Roger's calling as a pastor in the United Methodist Church took the couple to various communities in Nebraska where they lived.

They moved to Bushnell from Burwell, Neb. in 1999 when Roger became the pastor to the Kimball and Bushnell churches. Syd worked in several nursing homes. She enjoyed corresponding with young people and was the founder and organizer of the "Mama Syd's Fan Club". She was a member of the Calvary United Methodist Church of Bushnell and sang in the choir of Trinity United Methodist Church in Kimball. She was involved with the United Methodist Women's groups of both churches. She was a member of the Firebelles of Bushnell and was a board member of the Bushnell Community Center.

She is survived by her husband Roger, son, Josh Gillming of Kimball and his wife Jennifer, daughter Jessica Gillming of Wayne, Neb., sisters Kate Gerritzen of Katy, Tex. and Reedie Jantz of Chicago, Ill.

Her parents preceded her in death.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Syd Gillming Memorial Fund in care of the family. The Cantrell Funeral Home of Kimball is in charge of arrangements.

Richard Kolar

Richard Joseph "Dick" Kolar, 75, of Kimball died at Kimball Health Services Hospital at Thursday, May 23, 2002.

Funeral Services were Tuesday May 28 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Kimball with Pastor Tom Jacobsen officiating. Burial will be in Kimball cemetery with military honors rendered by Kimball Post #2243, Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was born February 11, 1927 in Fairmont, Neb. a son of Joseph and Justina (Bulin) Kolar. He graduated high school at Lynch in 1945 and shortly after that entered the U.S. Army at Ft. Leavenworth. He served from 1945 to 1947 in several locations including Germany. He was injured in an accident and was treated at various military hospitals. He was honorbably discharged with the rank of S Sgt.

He and Elaine Frisch were married on July 14, 1952 in Vermillion, S.c. They lived in Haxtun, Colo. and Bridgeport before moving to Kimball in 1966. He had also worked for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad for a number of years. He worked for the Chevrolet garage as an auto mechanic retiring from there in 1989. He then worked for Oil Field Pipe and Supply until he became ill.

He was a member of the American Legion in Haxtun and served as Chaplain and was a volunteer fireman there. He was a member of the Eagles, V.F.W., of St. John's Lutheran Church and served the church in various capacities.

He is survived by his wife Elaine of Kimball; daughters, Barbara Ann Kolar-Bergstrom and husband Bruce of Graybull, Wyo., and Lea S. Geraud and husband Gary of Billings, Mont.; son, Mitchell Lynn Kolar of Lakewood; brother Charles J. Kolar and wife Anna of Lynch, Neb.; sisters Betty Cline and husband Wayne of Ft. Collins, Colo., and Bessie Yates and husband Charley of Independence, Mo.; five grandchildren; one great grandson.

His parents and an infant brother Stanley preceded him in death.

Cantrell Funeral Home of Kimball is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Russell

Mary Ellen Russell, 74, of Pine Bluffs, Wyo. died on Wednesday, May 22, 2002 at Mountain Towers Health Care Center in Cheyenne. Funeral Services were at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, at the United Methodist Church of Pine Bluffs with the Rev. Terilynn Russ officiating. Burial was in Kimball cemetery.

She was born January 11, 1928 in Madison, Neb. to Clarence and Stella (Purdy) Nahrstedt. She graduated from high school at Madison and then attended Wayne State University and later the University of Nebraska. She received her teaching certificate and taught school for several years in Norfolk and Friend, Neb.

She and Boyd E. Russell were married on June 12, 1949 in Madison. They lived in Dix, Neb. for five years and then moved to the Pine Bluffs area where Boyd farmed before moving into town.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Pine Bluffs and was active in the United Methodist Women's group. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge and the Eastern Star of which she was a Past Matron. She belonged to the Triangle Club in Pine Bluffs. She enjoyed bowling and cards.

She is survived by her husband Boyd of Pine Bluffs; sons Richard L. Russell and wife Lucy of Cheyenne, Wyo., Boyd Eugene Russell, Jr. and wife Nena of Sterling, Colo., and Kenneth D Russell and wife Diana of Leander, Tex; daughter, Lynn and husband Ed Schneider of Orlando, Fla.; brothers Dale Nahrstedt and wife Betty of Lincoln, and Verl Nahrstedt and wife Harriet of Madison; and sister Jean and husband Gerald Radiant of Madison; nine grandchildren, two great grandchildren and four step grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association, or Pine Bluffs Methodist Church or to a charity of the donor's choice. The Cantrell Funeral Home of Kimball is in charge of arrangements.

Peter Regier

Peter J. Regier, 75, of Oshkosh and formerly of Kimball, died Thursday, May 16, 2002 at the Garden County Hospital in Oshkosh. Funeral services were Monday in the Faith Evangelical Free Church in Ogallala and burial was in the Ogallala cemetery.

He was born May 9, 1927 to David and Elizabeth (Buller) Regier in Hamilton County, Neb. He graduated from the Lushton High School and attended Bethel College in Newton, Kan. He joined the York National Guard where he achieved the rank of Sergeant before receiving an honorary discharge for health reasons.

He married Ardena Ruth Siebert June 4, 1953 in Henderson, Neb. They have three sons— Keith, Kenton and Val.

He started farming with his father and later did custom hay baling and trucking. In 1967 he moved to central Nebraska and later to western Nebraska. He was a member of a local motorcycle club in the good old days.

He was a member of the Faith Evangelical Free Church. He and Ardena were charter members in church plantings in the Sidney and Kimball Evangelical Free Churches.

Survivors include his wife of Oshkosh; sons, Keith (Sherryn) of Imperial, Kent (Diane) of Brighton, Colo. and Val of Greenwood, Mo.; two grandchildren; brothers Fred, David and Levi; sister Margaret (Don) Huebert, all of York County.

His parents preceded him in death.

Memorials have been established to the Faith Evangelical Church in Ogallala. Holechek Funeral Home in Oshkosh was in charge of arrangements.

Leo Lockwood

Leo Delynn Lockwood, 87, died May 17, 2002, at his home in Kimball. A memorial was to be held May 22 at Cantrell Funeral Home with burial at the Kimball cemetery.

He was born November 17, 1914 at Kimball to Frank and Olive (Sutherland) Lockwood, the sixth of 16 children. He attended rural school district # 4 when his family lived on the Circle Arrow Ranch. In 1933 he graduated from Kimball County High School and then helped his family move to Montana. He headed a forestry team that fought forest fires in the mountains of Montana near Missoula.

He married Maurine (Peterson) Campbell on April 27th 1941. The couple raised wheat on the North divide of the Dix community. Although willing, he was deferred from serving in 1941 because he was raising wheat. The couple lived on the farm 43 years before retiring in Kimball in 1984.

As an active member of the Dix Presbyterian Church, he served as an elder, board member and was Sunday school secretary and treasurer for many years. When the Dix church closed he transferred his membership to the Kimball Presbyterian Church.

He served on the district # 31 school board and was secretary and treasurer for the North divide Telephone Company, taking his turn as lineman. He was a charter member of the First Horse Show club in Kimball. He collected mind-bending puzzles, enjoyed square dancing, bowling and cards.

He is survived by his wife, daughter Karen and husband Ward McGowan of Kimball and British Columbia, daughter Marlene and husband Craig Roney of Northville, MI, seven grandchildren, three great grandchildren, brothers Don and Richard, sisters Verda Eckley, Audrey Koble and Ruth Arlint, several cousins and many nieces and nephews.

His parents, four sisters and six brothers preceded him in death.

Memorials may be made to the Kimball Presbyterian Church or to Prairie Haven Hospice.

Rose Love

Rose Love, 96, of Gretna, Neb. died May 21. She is the mother of Marilyn Haug of Bushnell, where she visited many times.

Services will be Saturday May 25 at St. Patrick's church in Gretna with burial in Mary Magdellyn cemetery in Omaha.

She designed the first "love" U.S. postage stamp in 1988 showing a full pink rose. She has several grandchildren, great- and great-great grand children.

Memorials may be sent in care of Kohler-Dolce Mortuary in Papillion, Neb.

Gladys Sanders

Gladys Darlene Sanders, 86, died May 14, 2002. She lived in Kimball County from 1945 to 1968 and is the mother of Delbert Sanders of Kimball.

Services will be May 17 at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Broken Bow, Neb.

She was born Oct. 2, 1915, at Welch, Okla., the youngest of six children of Herbert and Hazel Shaw. She attended school at Welch, Okla.

In 1933 she married Correluis Sanders at Vinita, Okla. They moved to Fairfield, Neb. where they farmed. In 1937, they moved to Gering, Neb. and farmed. They moved to Kimball County to farm in 1945 and were selected Outstanding Farmer in 1951.

In 1968 they bought a farm in Howard County, Neb. and lived at Walbach, Neb. for 12 years until retiring and moving to Broken Bow in 1979.

She was a life long member of the United Methodist Church, taught Sunday school, and was active in 4-H and Extension work and Farm Bureau Women. She enjoyed the outdoors, gardening and flowers and was a seamstress and quilter.

Survivors include her husband; children, Delbert (Peggy) Sanders, Kimball, Nadine (Donald) Reinhardt, Callaway, Neb.; four grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren; and other relatives.

Her parents, two brothers and three sisters preceded her in death.

Charlotte L. Tomich

Charlotte Luella (Perry) Tomich, age 90 of Kimball, died on Saturday, May 11, 2002 at the Kimball County Manor. Funeral Services were to be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Cantrell Funeral Home in Kimball with Rev. Robert Dahlgren officiating. Burial will be in Kimball cemetery.

She was born July 9, 1911 in Kimball a daughter of Clarence and Bessie (Brittian) Perry. She graduated from Kimball County High School and was a lifelong resident of the county. She married Albert Tomich on January 16, 1941 in Kimball.

They farmed until Albert's death on March 6, 1957. She worked with the school lunch program for several years. She and her daughter also owned and operated a beauty shop in her home.

She was a member of the Kimball Presbyterian Church, the Royal Neighbors Lodge, the VFW Auxiliary, the Lioness Club, and the Business and Professional Women's Club.

She is survived by daughter Sharon Hargreaves and her husband Joe of Sidney, grandchildren, Chris, Tyler, Nancy Rasnic, Shane and Albert, and three great grandsons.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and sisters Laura Reichman, Lucille Nightingale, and Verla Stahl, and brothers, Charlie, Leonard, Floyd, Bob, and little Albert Perry.

Memorials may be made to the Kimball Presbyterian Church, the Kimball County Manor, or Kimball Senior Center.

Timothy Rupp

Timothy Carl Rupp, 39, of Kimball died at his home on Sunday, May 5, 2002 of apparent heart failure. Funeral Services will be held 10 a.m. Friday, May 10 at the Cantrell Funeral Home in Kimball. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery in Scottsbluff, Neb.. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.

He was born April 18, 1963 in Alliance, a son of Carl and Arlene (Axt) Rupp. He spent a number of years in Colorado as a youth and graduated from high school in Thornton, Colo. He moved to Kimball with his parents in 1982.

For the past ten years, he has been employed by George Risk Industries. He enjoyed all types of sports and was especially fond of fishing.

He is survived by his father of Kimball and Aunt Katherine Meredith of Scottsbluff. His mother preceded him in death in 1986.

Memorials may be made to the Tim Rupp Memorial Fund.
