Calvin Walter Wolf

Calvin Walter Wolf, 82, of Englewood, Colo., died February 15, 2002, in Kimball.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 20 at Apostolic Faith Church in Colorado. Burial was at Fort Logan National cemetery.

He was born September 10, 1919, in Harding, Neb. He attended high school. He married Marjorie Wieland on June 16, 1945, in Bremerton, Wash.

He was self-employed and operated an expert cleaning service.

He was the minister of the Apostolic Faith Church.

He is survived by his wife Marjorie of Kimball; sons David Wolf of Harrisburg, Phillip Wolf of Golden, Colo., and Jonathan Wolf of Fenton, Mo.; daughters Rachel Nelms of Kimball, Rebecca King of Kimball, Elizabeth Lumley of Vancouver, British Columbia in Canada and Deborah Wolf of Bellevue, Wash.

Harold A. Nighswonger

Former Banner County resident Harold A. Nighswonger, 90, of Gering, died February 4, 2002, at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff.

Funeral services were held Thursday, February 7, at the Frontier School of the Bible Chapel in LaGrange, Wyo. Burial was in the LaGrange cemetery.

He was born to Lester and Rachel (Van Pelt) Nighswonger on February 27, 1911, in Harrisburg. He grew up and attended school in Harrisburg. The family then moved to Sunflower, Neb. and ranched southwest of Wheatland. They returned to Banner County where he worked on the Will Cratton Ranch.

He married Wanda Craton on March 7, 1934, in Sterling, Colo. The couple purchased a ranch east of LaGrange, where they lived until August 2001 when they moved to Heritage Health Care Center in Gering.

He served on the LaGrange School Board and drove the school bus. He was a member of the LaGrange Bible Church and was a lifetime member of the Farm Bureu.

He is survived by his wife; one daughter; three sons; two sisters; 15 grandchildren; and many great and great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother; a half-brother; a stepsister; and two grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Frontier School of the Bible.

Bruce Alvard

Bruce Alvard, 46, died Wednesday, January 30, 2002, at the Eben Ezer Care Center in Brush, Colo.

A memorial service was Monday, February 4 at the Heer & Joliffe Mortuary Chapel in Ft. Morgan, Colo.

He was born June 9, 1955, in Medford, Wisc. to Robert and Shirley Alvard. He grew up in the New Raymer, Colo., area. He graduated from Prairie High School.

He was a Nebraska State Bullfighting Champion four years in a row. He worked for several ranches around Nebraska and Colorado.

Survivors include his daughter his parents of Log Lane Village, Colo.; TJ Dawn Alvard of Brush, Colo.; step daughter Dusty Smith of Lone Tree, Colo.; sister Ginger Clasen of Kayenta, Ariz.; one niece and two nephews.

Memorial donations can be made to the Eben Ezer Lutheran Care Center, 122 Hospital Road, Brush, Colo. 80723.

Betty J. N. Muhr

Life-long Kimball resident Betty Muhr, 73, died at the Kimball County Hospital on Monday, February 4, 2002.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday, February 7, 1 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church of Kimball, with the Rev. Roger Gillming officiating. Burial She was born September 17, 1928, in Kimball a daughter of L.O. and Zola (Schoshke) Vencill. She was a life long resident of the area. She graduated from Kimball High School and attended secretarial school in Denver. For a number of years, she was a secretary at the First State Bank in Kimball retiring in 1990.

On September 25, 1949, she and Charles E. "Bud" Schindler were united in marriage. Mr. Schindler died August 15, 1972. She married Larry Muhr on February 22, 1986.

She was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church for over 50 years and was a member of the Church Wesleyan Circle and the United Methodist Church Women. She was a member of the A.P.H.E. Extension Club. She was associated with Job's Daughters for many years and had served as an Honored Queen.

She is survived by her husband, Larry of Kimball; sons Charles Tim and his wife Debbie Schindler of LaGrange, Texas, and Cory Muhr of Ft. Collins, Colo.; daughters Cheryl and her husband Tim Weyers of LaJunta, Colo., Julie and her husband Robert Lee of Banner County, and Lorri and her husband Junior Norberg of Bushnell; brothers Jack and his wife Wilma Vencill of Kimball and Jim and his wife Dorothy Vencill of Vernal, Utah; and 10 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband Bud, a brother Glenn Vencill and a grandson Josh Norberg.

Memorial gifts may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church or a charity of the donor's choice.

The Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Hazel (Tart) Johnson

Hazel (Tart) R. Johnson, 91 of Gering, Neb., died Sunday, February 3, 2002, at the Northfield Villa Medical Center.

A funeral service will be held Thursday, February 7, 10 a.m., at the Gering Memorial Chapel, with Rev. Howard Roseberry officiating. Interment will be at West Lawn cemetery in Gering. Friends may call Wednesday at the Gering Memorial Chapel until 8 p.m. and an hour before service on Thursday.

She was born in Snyder, Okla. on September 1, 1910, to Edson A. and Eva Lena (Boss) Tart. She has lived in Banner County since 1913. She attended the one room school known as the Vee grade school and Gering and Melbeta. She graduated from Gering High School with the class of 1929.

She married Fred Lars Johnson of Banner County on August 2, 1947, at Alliance, Neb. They farmed and ranched west of Harrisburg until 1977, when they moved to the ranch of Hazels childhood growing up days south of Gering.

She was a lifetime member of the Banner County Historical Society.

She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews

She was preceded in death by her husband Fred, parents, three brothers and a sister.

Memorials have been established to the Banner County Historical Society or donors choice.

Donna Schindler

Former Kimball resident Donna Rae Schindler, 54, of LaSalle, Colo. died on Saturday, February 2, 2002, at the Graycara Center in Keensburg, Colorado.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Fri., Feb. 8 at the Cantrell Funeral Home of Kimball. Inurnment will be at the Kimball cemetery following the service.

She was born August 31, 1947, at Creston, Neb. to Louis F. and Edna Louise (Bohac) Wurdeman. She graduated high school at Dix in 1965. She married Roger Allen Schindler on September 15, 1973, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Kimball.

She was a long time resident of the area and had been employed by George Risk Industries until her health forced her to retire in 1999. She then moved to the Kimball Manor in August that year and in December moved to LaSalle, Colo. to be with her daughter.

She is survived by her husband, Roger Allen Schindler of Big Piney, Wyo.; son Casey Allen Schindler of Kimball; daughter Tonia Rae McAdams of LaSalle, Colo.; sisters Janice Daugherty of Hyannis, Neb., and Nancy Smith, Linda Seeman, and Barbara Wurdeman all of Kimball; brothers Roy Wurdeman of Dix and Larry Wurdeman of Kingman, Ariz.; one granddaughter; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Max Wurdeman.

Memorial gifts may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Barbara Ann Thacker

Barbara Ann Thacker, 67, of Kimball died at her home on Wednesday, January 30, 2002.

Memorial Services was held February 2, at the Cantrell Funeral Home in Kimball with Rev. Ed Newbury of St. Hilda's Episcopal Church officiating. Cremation has taken place.

She was born November 17, 1934, in Virginia to George and Georgia Lee (McKinney) Torrance. She lived in that area for a number of years. On July 12, 1952 she married to Wm. John Thacker in Rockville, Maryland. They would have been married 50 years in July.

The couple lived in Scottsbluff for a time and then moved to Kimball in 1960.

They operated various restaurants in Kimball including the Hik'ry Inn which they ran for over 30 years.

She had some music and poetry published. She was a member of the Song Writers Guild.

She had been a member of the Kimball Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary for many years.

She is survived by her husband Wm. John Thacker; son William John Thacker, Jr. and his wife Cynthia of Bakersville, Calif.; daughters, Sherri Lynn Reed and her husband Larry Batkin of Grand Junction, Colo., Cynthia Lee Webb of New Orleans, La., and Toni Charleen Faustman of Peabody, Kan.; brother George Walter Torrance of Virginia; eleven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Her parents and a sister Georgia Lee Matise preceded her in death.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Kimball Volunteer Fire Department.

Florence Farmer

Florence Emma (Peterson) Farmer, 102, of Kimball, died on Tuesday, January 22, 2002, at the Kimball County Manor.

Funeral services were held Friday, January 25, at the Cantrell Funeral Home, with Pastor Dwayne Hunzeker officiating. Burial was in the Kimball cemetery.

She was born in Banner County on September 22 1899, to Victor and Emma Kristine (Swanson) Peterson. She married Clyde Wesley Farmer on May 21, 1921, in Sidney.

She attended Kearney State College and later studied music in San Pedro, Calif. at the Heelds School of Music.

She and her husband Clyde moved to Kimball County where they farmed and raised livestock. After Clyde's death on June 1, 1977, she continued to live on the farm for a number of years before moving into Kimball.

She was a member of the First English Lutheran Church of Kimball.

She is survived by her son Carroll of Bayard, Neb.; daughter-in-law Virginia Farmer of Mills, Wyo.; grandchildren Keith Farmer of Casper, Wyo., Richard Farmer of Flora Vista, N.M., James Farmer of Casper, Wyo., and Suzette Besich of Denver, Colo.; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Clyde; sons Bernard and David; three sisters and two brothers.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Kimball County Manor or First English Lutheran Church.

Raymond Henry Meier

Former Kimball resident Raymond Henry Meier, 78, of Scottsbluff, died in Scottsbluff on Saturday, January 26, 2002.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 29, at the Cantrell Funeral Home in Kimball, with Rev. Ron Nuss-Warren officiating. Burial was in the Kimball cemetery.

He was born on July 28, 1923, to Henry Carl and Blanche (Longtin) Meier in Sidney, Neb. He lived in Broadwater with his parents until 1926 when they moved to a farm three miles east of Kimball. He grew up there and graduated from the Kimball County High School in 1941. He worked during his high school years for the J.C.Penney Company and for a while was a manager of the Kimball store. He also worked as a production manager for Bedrock Oil and Gas Company for a number of years. Ray served with the U. S. Army and was a veteran of World War II. He farmed for many years before moving in 1992 from the farm to The Residency in Scottsbluff.

He was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Kimball of over 50 years. He was also a member of the American Legion for more than 50 years.

He is survived by several cousins. His parents and several cousins preceded him in death.

Memorials gifts may be made to The Residency in Scottsbluff or to the Kimball Presbyterian Church.

Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Vena L. Russell

Former Potter resident Vena L. Russell, 82, died Saturday, January 26, 2002, in Gering.

Funeral services were Tuesday, January 29 at the Holechek Funeral Home in Sidney, with Pastor H. Eldin Wells officiating. Burial was in the Potter cemetery.

She was born October 21, 1919, to Leonard Wayne and Mabel Fannie (Hollenbeck) in Scottsbluff. She married Leonard W. Russell on November 29, 1937, in Norton Kan. In 1949, they moved to Potter where she worked a short time as a cook at the Potter Cafe', the Potter Schools and Memorial Hospital in Sidney. Following her husband's death in 1993, she moved to Sidney and then to the Scottsbluff-Gering area.

She is survived by sons Wayne Russell and his wife Bernice of Gurley and Vaughn Russell Sr. of Scottsbluff; brothers Lawrence Prickett of Henery and Eugene Prickett of Caldwell, Idaho; sister Rachel Harmon of Gering; twelve grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband and two brothers.
