Alice E. Snyder Nagel

Alice E. Snyder Nagel, 88, of Scottsbluff, died Saturday, June 16, 2001, at the Residency Care Center.

Funeral services were Wednesday, June 20, at the First English Lutheran Church in Kimball, with the Rev. Dwayne Hunzeker officiating. Burial was in the Kimball cemetery.

She was born on April 1, 1913, in rural Banner County to Earl and Mabel (Cross) Callaham. She attended a country school through the tenth grade. She married John Snyder on October 1, 1928, in Scottsbluff, Neb., and later married Otto Nagel on February 17, 1951, in Sidney. She was a housewife.

She was a member of the First English Lutheran Church, a charter member of the Twin Tree Sunday School.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law J.W. and Janice Snyder of Harrisburg; daughters and sons-in-law Marlene and Carl Carlson of Kimball and Eloise and Richard Jackson of Sidney; nine grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands John and Otto; an infant daughter Alice; four brothers and one sister.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Prairie Haven Hospice, Banner County Historical Society or the First English Lutheran Church.

Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Betty Lea Sterkel

Betty Lea Sterkel, 65, of Gering, died Sunday, June 17, 2001, at her home. She is the niece of Mary Hodgson of Kimball.

Funeral services were Wednesday, June 20, at Central Church of Christ in Gering. Interment was at Sunset Memorial Park cemetery in Scottsbluff.

She is survived by her husband Jack of Gering; three sons; one daughter; one sister; an uncle; an aunt; and six grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son; and one sister.

A memorial has been established to the family to be designated at a later date.

Merle E. Morgan

Merle E. Morgan, 77, of Kimball, died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at the Kimball County Hospital.

Recitation of the Rosary was at 7 p.m. Friday, June 1, 2001, at the Cantrell Funeral Home. Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 2, 2001, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Kimball, with the Rev. Francis Curran officiating. Burial was in the Kimball cemetery in Kimball. Cantrell Funeral Home were in charge of arrangements.

He was born on February 24, 1924, in Dix, Neb., to Claude B. and Anna (Gragert) Morgan. He attended grade school north of Dix in a country school. He was active in FFA while attending Columbus High School and graduated in 1941. He spent three years in the Army during World War II. He married Evelyn M. Gable on May 14, 1946, in Shelby, Neb. While in Kimball he owned and operated the Studebaker dealership and the Conoco Oil business.

He was a member of the Kimball County Ag Society for 47 years and was associated with the Kimball Fire Department for 35 years. He was a member of the St. Joseph's Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, the V.F.W. and the American Legion.

He is survived by his wife Evelyn of Kimball; one son Craig Morgan and his wife Beth of Lakewood, Colo. four daughters, Jean Barrett and her husband Bob of Kimball, Lois Poessnecker and her husband Larry of Atkinson, Joyce Reed and her husband Leonard of Sheridan, Wyo., and Janet Adels and her husband Dennis of Casper, Wyo.; a sister Loretha Mulholland of Marysville, Wash.; a brother Ron Morgan of Firestone, Colo., 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Prairie Haven Hospice or the Kimball Volunteer Fire Department.

George Patrick Burke

George Patrick Burke, 72, died on May 30, 2001 in Green Valley, Ariz. He was a lawyer in Kimball for 45 years.

A memorial service was held at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church, Green Valley, on June 1, 2001. Green Valley Mortuary and Holy Hope cemetery, Tucson, are in charge of the funeral arrangements.

George was born in Alliance, Nebraska, on April 27, 1929. He graduated from St. Agnes Academy High School in Alliance, NE. He left the family ranch to attend college and graduated from Creighton University, Omaha, Nebraska, in 1952 with a Juris Doctor degree. As a senior at Creighton, he was elected Class President and also President of the Student Bar Association. He was a member of Phi Alpha Delta, the national law honorary fraternity. From the Creighton Student Bar Association he was honored for outstanding service to the School of Law, 1949 to 1952.

After graduation, he joined the Army as a First Lieutenant in the JAG Corp and served in that capacity in the states and in Okinawa until his discharge.

In 1955 he moved to Kimball, Neb., and became a member of the law firm of Van Steenberg, Myers and Burke. George practiced law in Kimball, NE, for 45 years. The firm still bears his name of Burke and Wilson.

He was married to JoAnne in South Saint Paul, Minnesota, on July 8, 1961. He lived in Green Valley, Ariz., for the past four years.

George was a member of the American Bar Association and Nebraska State Bar. He served on the Disciplinary Committee for the Nebraska State bar for several years and is a past member of the American Association of Trial Lawyers. He served as city attorney for both Kimball and Sidney, Neb., and president of the Kimball Cosmopolitan Club. He was also a past member of Knights of Columbus, Elks, Kimball Library Board and St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Kimball, NE.

He is survived by his wife, JoAnne, four children — Jennifer Biggs, Tucson, AZ; Laurie Tomczyk, Littleton, CO; John Burke, Imperial, NE; and Daniel Burke, Sidney, NE, six grandchildren, two brothers, Jack Burke and Bernard Burke, both of Alliance, NE, and sister Barbara Morrill of Alliance, NE. He was precede in death by one sister.

Remembrances can to made to the Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) Society or to a charity of choice.

Kenneth J. Richards

Kenneth J. Richards, 83, of Kimball, died Monday, April 9, 2001, at the Kimball County Manor. Graveside services will be Thursday, April 12, 3:30 p.m. at the Kimball cemetery, with Pastor Andy Hergenreder of the First Church of the Nazarene officiating.

He was born on June 19, 1917, at Bassett, Neb. to John and Flossie (Heath) Richards. He was raised by Albert and Marion McCall in Rock County, Neb. after his mother’s death in 1919.

He married Avid Bogle on March 24, 1940, north of Bushnell. He farmed with his father-in-law in Kimball County until moving to Mitchell in 1950. The couple returned to Kimball in 1960 and in 1967 moved to Longmont, Colo., where he worked for the Longmont Public Schools. After retiring in 1984, they returned to Kimball.

He coached youth sports and supported local athletic teams.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Connie and Jerry Knutsen of Kimball; son and daughter-in-law Tom and Mary Richards of Indio, Calif.; grand-daughters Valarie Franklin of Palm Desert, Calif., Pamela Smith of Parker, Colo., and Julie Franklin of Scottsbluff; one great granddaughter,

Kristen Smith of Parker, Colo.; and LaVerne McCall Iverson of Ainsworth, Neb., a daughter of the family who raised Ken.

He was preceded in death by his wife Avis, his parents, a brother, a sister and numerous half-brothers and sisters.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Kimball County Manor.

John V. Bernard

John Veetz Bernard, Sr., of Ft. Collins, Colo. died July 1, 2000. He was Superintendent of the Kimball High School in the 1940s. He is survived by son John Russell Bernard, Jr.

Elwood L. H. Harms

Elwood L. H. Harms, 87, of Kimball, died Saturday, March 31, 200l.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial services were Wednesday, April 4, at the First English Lutheran Church, with Pastor Dwayne Hunzeker officiating. Burial of the cremains was at Potter cemetery.

He was born on October 30, 1913, in Dodge County, Neb. to Arthur T. and Freda (Wiekhorst) Harms. He came to Cheyenne County with his parents in 1928. He graduated from Potter High School.

He married Wilma Schreinert on June 2, 1935, in Dalton, Neb. The couple had lived in Dix and Burns before coming to Kimball in 1966.

He was a section foreman for the Union Pacific Railroad for 40 years. He retired in 1974.

He was a member of the First English Lutheran Church of Kimball. He was a member of the Maintenance Union of Railroad Workers. He had served on the Dix School Board and had been on Town Council at Burns, Wyo.

He is survived by his wife Wilma of Kimball; son Elwood J. (Junior) Harms of Potter; sisters Margorie Curtis of Salem, Ore., and Betty Bennett of Auburn, Wash.; grandchildren Candice Dudney, Lori Maas, Randy Harms all of Potter, and Ronald Harms of Ft. Collins, Colo.; 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister Harriet Sanders.

Memorial gifts may be made to the First English Lutheran Church in Kimball or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Oneita M. Sibal

Oneita M. Sibal, 88, of Scottsbluff, died Friday, March 30, 2001, at Beverly Healthcare in Scottsbluff. She was the mother of Pat Sibal of Kimball.

Funeral services were Wednesday, April 4 at Draucker Funeral home. Interment was in the Ogallala cemetery.

She was born December 20, 1912, in Smith County, Kan. to French and Bessie Fruit Smith. She grew up in Arthur County and lived in Julesburg, Colo.; Thermopiles, Wyo.; Ogallala and Arizona throughout her life. She married Alford “Boliver Clapp in 1928. She married Joe F. Sibal in 1939. She had received her nursing training in 1935 and had been employed in North Platte, Grant, Ogallala and Julesburg.

She was survived by five sons and daughters-in-law, including Pat and Cathleen Sibal of Kimball; two sisters; 15 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, daughter, three brothers and one sister.

A memorial has been established.

Draucker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

W.R. (Waldo) Nelson

Former Kimball resident W.R. (Waldo) Nelson, 72, of Mesa, Ariz. died Sunday, March 25, 2001 at his home.

A memorial service is planned for Wednesday, March 28, 10:30 a.m. in Mesa.

He was born October 18, 1928, to Elvis and Iva Nelson in Carmi, Ill. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1945-1948.

He married Norma Jean Gardner January 25, 1951, in West Liberty, Ill. They recently celebrated their 50th anniversary.

He worked in the oilfields in Illinois, Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas and Nebraska. His family moved to Kimball in 1956. He established Orbit Drilling Company in 1979. He ran the firm until retiring in 1993.

After spending winters in Arizona, they moved permanently to Mesa in 1996.

He was a member of Masonic Lodge #294 and the Tehoma Shrine Temple.

He is survived by his wife Norma Nelson of Mesa; son Douglas Nelson of Mesa; daughter and son-in-law Linda and Larry Dedic of Scottsbluff, Neb.; three grandchildren; one great-grandson; several special nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one brother.

Memorials may be made to the W.R. Nelson memorial fund in care of Norma Nelson at 2507 S. Acanthus Mesa, Ariz. 85208 to be donated to Hospice in Mesa, Scottsbluff, and Kimball, or to the donor's choice.

Evelyn Hantsbarger

Evelyn Mae Hantsbarger, 92, of Cherokee, Iowa, died Thurs., March 22, 2001, at Careage Hills in Cherokee. She was the mother of Joan Hilkemeier of Kimball.

Services were Monday, March 26 at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Cherokee. Burial was in the Oak Hill cemetery in Cherokee. A family prayer service was held at the church.

She was born October 20, 1908, in Spring Township, Cherokee County to Christian and Nancy (Dunn) Schnell. She attended schools in Cherokee, graduating in 1925. She taught rural school in Afton Township for several years. She married Reginald Hantsbarger in Cherokee, Iowa, on March 15, 1931. They farmed in Afton for many years before moving to Cherokee in 1984.

Survives include two daughters Roberta Rogge of Cherokee and Joan Hilkemeier and her husband Don of Kimball; one sister; and eight grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in March 1931, one brother, one sister, one grandson and one son-in-law.
