Marie “Mary” Huber

Marie “Mary” Kathrine Huber, 89, of Bayard, died January 5, 2001, at the Kimball County Manor. She has lived at the manor for the past year.

Funeral services were Tuesday, January 9, at the Faith United Church of Christ at Bayard, with the Rev. Ron Nuss-Warren officiating. Interment will be in the Bayard cemetery.

She was born November 22, 1911, at Woodbine, Kan. to Fred and Katie (Funk) Lockman. She moved with her family to Wisconsin. The family moved to Nebraska in 1918 and lived at Scottsbluff for six months before moving to Bayard.

She married Jacob “Jake” Huber on February 18, 1934, at Bayard. They farmed in the Bridgeport, McGrew and Bayard areas from 1934 until 1980. After retiring, they moved into Bayard.

She was a member of Faith United Church Christ of Bayard, had taught Sunday School for nine years and served as president of the Ladies Fellowship.

She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law Linda and Bill Dickerson of Kimball, Loretta and Frank McGinley, of Olathe, Kan.; sister Rosalie Lockman; 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Jake in October 1998; an infant daughter; daughter Lillian Huber Turner; five sisters Ann Arnold, Pauline Hamburg, Katherine Kaufman, Katie Hamburg, and Margaret Hamburg; and brother Fred Lockman.

A memorial has been established to Faith United Church.

Jolliffe Funeral Home at Bridgeport was in charge of the arrangements.

Terry E. Paxton

Dix resident Terry E. Paxton, 53, died Friday, December 29, 2000, at his home.

No funeral services are scheduled. Cremation has taken place.

He was born April 21, 1947, in North Platte, Neb. to Leon and Evelyn (McCarty) Paxton. He graduated from North Platte High School in 1965. He married Marjorie Britt on January 23, 1965, in North Platte.

He started his career in October 1965 with the Union Pacific Railroad in Cheyenne as a clerk and then moved in November 1965 to Rawlins, Wyo. In 1971, he began working as a switchman/brakeman. He became a conductor for the railroad in 1973 and continued working in Rawlins until January 1992. He was transferred to Cheyenne and worked there until October 1998. He and his wife moved to Dix in August 1997, where he retired from the railroad in October 1998 due to ill health.

He was a member of U.T.W. (Transportation Union).

He is survived by his wife Marjorie of Dix; three daughters, Stephanie Deanna Paxton of Dix, Danette Elizabeth Paxton of Westminster, Colo., and Nicole Georgette Paxton of Davenport, Iowa; four brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Beth Paxton of Sidney, Lynn and Marilu Paxton of Denver, Wayne Paxton of Malden, Mass., and Francis and Loretta Paxton of North Platte; seven sisters, Virginia Anderson of Las Vegas, Nev., Ellen Sparks and her husband Tom of Blaine, Minn., Leona Paxton, Glendean Paxton and Nancy Fisher all of North Platte, Neb., Janet Pekrul of Thornton, Colo. and Helen Simco, and two grandchildren, Taylor Nicole Welch of Davenport and Brittany Katlin Paxton of Dix.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Violet J. Van Housen

Former Potter resident Violet J. Van Housen, 70, died Saturday, December 24, 2000, at the Memorial Health Center in Sidney.

Funeral services were held Friday, December 29 at the Holechek Funeral Home in Sidney, with Father Lyle Martin officiating. Burial was in the Dix cemetery.

She was born December 3, 1930, to Raymond Jr. and Bessie Yetter. at Lewellen, Neb. She married George Van Housen at Kimball on September 27, 1947.

She lived in Gurley for a time, moving to Ogden, Utah, in 1966. In the fall of 1979, she moved back to Cheyenne County, settling at Potter.

She is survived by her son Randall of Potter; her father; her sisters Agnes Eisele and her husband Gerald of Kimball and Cermel Haney of Boone, Colo.; brother Howard Yetter of Potter; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her mother; one nephew and a great-niece.

Neva Mary Jackson

Kimball resident Neva Mary Jackson, 89, died Monday, January 1, 2001, at the Kimball County Manor.

Funeral services will be Thursday, January 4, 2 p.m., at the Cantrell Funeral Home in Kimball, with the Rev. Dwayne Hunzeker officiating. Burial will be in the Kimball cemetery. Visitation hours were noon to 8 p.m., Wednesday, January 3 at the funeral home.

She was born on June 28, 1911, to William and Bertha Leona (Inman) Wright in Petersburg, Neb. She married Elton G. Jackson on March 22, 1930, in Sidney.

She worked as a LPN at the Kimball Manor and the Kimball Hospital. She also worked for Dr. Core and Dr. Pinkerton. Before working at the Kimball Manor, she operated a certified nursing facility out of her home. She and her husband resided at the Park Terrace Apartments for about 10 years. She moved to the Kimball Manor in 1996.

She was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Kimball and the Kimball VFW Auxiliary.

She is survived by sons Richard Jackson and his wife Eloise of Sidney, Neb., Gayland Jackson and his wife Kathy of Pierce, Colo., and Alan Jackson of Niangua, Mo.; daughter Bernita Brown and her husband Noia "Cork" of Kimball; 9 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on March 22, 1930; and two daughters, Mary Lynn Applebury and Carol Lou Jackson.

Memorial gifts may be made to Kimball Manor Activity Department or the Presbyterian Church of Kimball.

Gerald Loyd McCaslin

Sidney resident Gerald Loyd McCaslin, 74, died Thursday, December 28, 2000, at the Swedish Critical Care Unit in Denver. He was the father of Gary McCaslin of Potter.

Funeral services were January 2 at the First United Methodist Church in Sidney, with Rev. Gary Aten officiating. Burial was in the Greenwood cemetery.

He was born October 5, 1946. He married Lucille Burnett on October 5, 1946. He moved his family to Sidney in July of 1952.

He is survived by his wife Lucille of Sidney; sons Gary and wife Nanci of Potter, Larry and wife Cheryl of Scottsbluff and Kevan and wife Cate of Elizabeth, Colo.; two brothers; one sister; 12 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Memorial contributions can be made to Habitat for Humanity or the First United Methodist Church in Sidney.

Alvin M. Johnson

Former Banner County resident Alvin M. Johnson, 85, of Hawk Springs Wyo., died December 27, 2000, at his home. Funeral services were held December 30 at the Frontier Bible School Chapel in LaGrange, Wyo., with the Rev. Don Mathis officiating. Burial was in Kimball.

He was born in Banner County to Emil and Anna (Olson) Johnson on October 15, 1915. He grew up and attended school in Banner County. He worked the family ranch in Banner County before serving in the U.S. Air Force and for a short time after his discharge. He married Edna Mae Lewellen on March 19, 1950, in Kimball.

He is survived by one daughter; two sons; three sisters; one brother and twelve grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife and eight brothers and sisters.

Theresa M. Hemmer

Kimball resident Theresa M. Hemmer, 98, died Monday, November 20, 2000, at

Memorial Health Center in Sidney.

Mass of Christian Burial was Wednesday, November 22, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Kimball, with the Rev. Francis Curran will be celebrant. Burial was in Kimball cemetery.

She was born January 29, 1902, in Sunol, Neb., to Thomas and Margaret (O'Conner) Sethaler.

She married John James Hemmer on February 18, 1935, in Sterling, Colo. The couple moved to Kimball in 1950. They operated a wheat farm. In the early 1950's, the Hemmer's opened one of the first motel facilities on Highway 30 in Kimball County.

She was an excellent seamstress who made all of her own clothes and hats

She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic in Kimball.

She is survived by sons James Hemmer of Louisiana and Earl Hemmer of Calif.; brothers, Keith Sethaler of Peetz, Colo., and Kent Sethaler of Rifle, Colo.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband John on June 25, 1983, three brothers and one sister.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Rosary Altar Society of St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

Dorothy Musil

Dorothy “Dot” A. Musil, 68, of Sidney, died Saturday, November 18, 2000, at Beverly Health Care in Scottsbluff.

Memorial services will be Friday, November 25, 10:30 a.m., at St. Patrick’s Church in Sidney, with Father Ted Nekoliczak officiating. Inurnment will be at Greenwood cemetery.

She was born january 18, 1932, to Louie and Emma (Kaiser) Sebold in Boelus, Neb. She married Lumir J. Musil on October 29, 1949, in Sidney. The couple farmed north of Potter for a number of years before moving to Sidney in 1956. She worked at Cabela’s.

She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law Deborah Ann Tobler of Omaha, Candice and Jerry Golden of Crawford, Neb., Kim and Richard Rushman of Gurley, Neb., and Kelly and Todd Ostensen of Dalton, Neb; brother and sister-in-law Gillis and Lois Sebold of Sidney; sisters and brothers-in-law Renee and Tom Backus of Aurora, Colo., Cindy and Marty Knowles of Phoeniz, Ariz., Bev Brungardt and Arlene Louthan, both of Denver; ten grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorials can be made to the Dorwart Cancer Treatment Center or the Alzheimer’s Wing at Memorial Health Center.

Robert Gordon Reed

Former Potter resident Robert Gordon Reed, of Sidney, died Wednesday, November 1, 2000.

Funeral services were Monday, November 6 at the Potter United Methodist Church, with Father Lyle Martin officiating. Military graveside services followed in the Potter cemetery.

He was born December 29, 1923, in York, Neb., to Robert T. and Fern Ocean (Cook) Reed. He graduated from Central City High School in 1942. He served in the Army Air Corps as a high-speed radio operator in the Pacific Theater during World War II.

He obtained a bachelor's of arts degree from Nebraska Central College, receiving his teaching certificate in 1949. He taught high school English, History and Spanish in Mason City, Potter, Bayard and Norfolk, Neb.

He married Charlotte Margaret Enevoldsen December 23, 1956 at the Methodist Church in Potter.

He changed professions in 1959 and went to work at National Bank and Commerce NBC in Lincoln. He moved to Potter to work for the Potter State Bank in 1960 and remained there until his retirement in 1992.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 291, the Potter Melodrama, the United Methodist Church, the Potter Lions Club, the Sons of the American Revolution, the Masonic Lodge and Shrine and the Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce. He served on the Potter Public School Board of Education, Village board of Trustees and the Educational Service Unit in Sidney.

He is survived by his four children and their spouses Jennifer and Dr. Jeffrey Cook, Sidney, Robert and Noriko Reed, Warren, N.J., Timothy and Yumiko Reed, Tokyo, Japan, Susan and Maj. Mark David DeLong, Yorktown, Va; eight grandchildren Jordon Cook, Catherine, Robert and Allison Reed, Shauna and Julie Lynn Reed, Matthew Reed DeLong and Ryan DeLong.

Memorials may be made to the Robert Gordon Reed Memorial Fund.

Marie Gifford

Former Harrisburg resident Marie Gifford, 90, of Gering, died Thursday, November 2, 2000, at the Northfield Villa.

Funeral services were Saturday, November 4 at Gering Memorial Chapel, with Pastor Ken Boston officiating. Burial was in West Lawn cemetery.

She was born July 17, 1910, in Newton, Iowa, to Bert and Kate (Cross) Bair. She graduated from Banner County High School and married Kenneth Gifford August 20, 1932, in Gering.

She was a member of Harrisburg Community Church, Pythian Sisters and Wildcat Community club.

She is survived by her husband Kenneth of Gering; sons and daughters-in-law John and Sherry Gifford of Harrisburg and roger and Shirley Gifford of Gering; three grandsons; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her sister Dora Olsen and her parents.

Memorials have been established to the Harrisburg Community Church or Northfield Villa.
