H. George Herrin

Longtime Kimball resident H. George Herrin, 64, died October 13, 2000, in Cheyenne, Wyo.

Memorial services were Tuesday, October 17 at the Cantrell Funeral Home in Kimball, with Rev. Roger Gillming officiating. Cremation has taken place.

He was born January 21, 1936, in Omaha to George Sr. and Virginia (Ryland) Herrin. He grew up in Omaha and attended the Omaha schools, where he graduated from Omaha Central. While in high school, he was active in football and hockey. He married Verda Lee “Bert” Bree November 5, 1956, in Norfolk, Neb.

He served in the Army Corps of Engineers from 1955to 1956. His wife joined him in Tripoli, Libya, while his company surveyed in the Sahara Desert.

He worked for the State of Nebraska Department of Roads for many years, beginning in Omaha and then transferring to Western Nebraska. He then moved to Kimball County to serve as the highway superintendent. He also served as the Kimball County surveyor for over 25 years. He also had a private land surveying business for many years.

He was an active member of the Nebraska Engineers, Highway Superintendents and Surveyors Association. He was also involved with the Jaycees organization for many years in Western Nebraska.

He is survived by his wife, Bert; three daughters Lisa Barnes of Ft. Collins, Colo., Susan Steele of Irving, Texas, and Kathryn Herrin of Canon City, Colo.; one sister Mary Ann Stevens of Omaha; one brother-in-law Marlin Bree of St. Paul, Minn.; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be given to the Kimball Boy Scouts or Prairie Haven Hospice.

Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Betty (Hickman) Jonte

Former Bushnell resident Betty Jonte, of Greeley, Colo., died October 12, 2000, at North Colorado medical Center in Greeley. She is formerly of Sedgwick, Colo.

Funeral services were Monday, October 16, at Community Presbyterian Church in Sedgwick. Burial was in Sedgwick cemetery.

She was born April 5, 1922, to Earl and Josephine (Yost) Hickman. She attended rural schools for eight years and graduated from Bushnell High School in 1939. She attended and graduated from Marinello Beauty School of Denver in 1940. She operated a small beauty salon in Bushnell.

She married Howard L. Jonte on January 31, 1945. The couple moved to Platteville, Colo., after his discharge from the service. In 1947, they moved to Sedgwick, Colo., where they lived for 46 years. She was employed as a bookkeeper and assistant manager at the Sedgwick Lumber Co. In 1993, she moved to Greeley, Colo.

She was a member of Community Presbyterian Church at Sedgwick, where she served as an elder and a deacon. She was an active member of the Presbyterian Women’s Association and a charter member of the Friendship Birthday Club. She was also a member of American legion Auxiliary #105, where she served as president of the local unit and past president of district #3.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Sharyl and Ron Loos; sister Elouise Schacher and husband Marvin of Pine Bluffs, Wyo; two grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three brothers and three sisters.

Austin Funeral Home in Julesburg, Colo., was in charge of arrangements.

Raymond L. Lockwood

Raymond L. Lockwood, 89, died Wednesday, October 11, 2000, at the Northfield Villa Care Center in Gering, Neb.

Funeral services were Saturday, October 14 at the Cantrell Funeral Home, with the Rev. Roger Gillming officiating. Burial was in the Kimball cemetery.

He was born December 7, 1910, at Petersburg, Neb. to Alfred and Hattie (Lawrence) Lockwood. His family moved to Kimball County in 1917. His father raised him and his six siblings after his mother’s death in 1922.

During his high school years in Kimball, he milked cows and delivered milk. Mostly, his vocation was farming.

He married Ethel Francisco in November 1933 in Gering. They lived on a farmstead northwest of Kimball for many years. He has been a resident of the Northfield Villa Medical Center since his wife’s death in 1996.

He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, the Kimball Solo Club, the Kimball Lions Club and served many years as a committeeman for the ASCS (FSA) office of Kimball County.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Jack and Joan of Kimball; daughter Shirley and her husband Harold Brethhour of Torrington, Wyo.; six grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandsons; brother Ted and his wife Donna of Austin, Texas; sister Dorothy Jarrett of Denver; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one granddaughter Sandy Schwartzkopf, three brothers Alfred, Milford, Thorval, and one sister Connie.

Memorials may be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church.

Carol M. Young

Former Kimball resident Carol M. Young, 84, died September 26, 2000, at her home in Colorado Springs, Colo. She lived in Kimball County from 1926 to 1974.

Funeral services were Saturday, September 30 at the First United Methodist Church of Colorado Springs. Burial was at Memorial Gardens cemetery.

She was born May 17, 1916, in Endicott, Neb., to Serrel T. and Mary Eleanor (Walburn) Savage. She married Joseph L. Young August 22, 1940. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband; sons Larry, Dwight, Marvin and Dean; a brother Lynn Savage; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Memorials can be made to John Wesley Ranch in care of First United Methodist Church, 420 N. Nevada Ave., Colorado Springs, Colo., 80903.

Swan Law Funeral Directors was in charge of arrangements.

Jerry F. Madden

Jerry F. Madden, 63, died Sunday, October 1, 2000, at his home in Kimball.

Funeral Services were Friday, October 6 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Kimball. Burial will be in the Potter cemetery

He was born April 26, 1937, at Sidney to Edson and Alice (Carlson) Madden. He was on the family farm and ranch west of Lorenzo, Neb.. He graduated from Lorenzo High School in 1954. After graduation, he entered the U.S. Marine Corp until he was honorably discharged in 1958. He then custom harvested with his brother-in-law Marvin Fleming and his brother Karl Madden in the summers. He worked in the oil fields in the winters.

In 1960, he married Jeanette Wickman. They lived in Sidney, Neb. for a brief period and then moved to Peetz, Colorado. where he owned and operated a water-hauling business for the oil fields.

The couple moved to Redington, Neb., where Jerry owned and operated a farm and ranch for three years. He then returned to Peetz where he owned and operated a large hog operation for five years with his life-long friend, Merv Meier.

They moved to Banner County. He farmed with his brother Ray for 25 years, until his retirement earlier this year. During this time, he also owned and operated over the road semi's and also helped his sons start their trucking and combining business. In his later years, he dedicated much of his time in assisting his sons in their business.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Peetz, CO., a member of the Elks, and in his youth had been a very active member of 4-H

He is survived by two sons, Dan and his wife Alecka Madden of Worland, WY and Scott Madden also of Worland. Also surviving is one brother Ray Madden of Kimball, NE., and three sisters, Charlotte Fleming of Sidney, NE, Shirley Trimmer of Flagler, CO., and Alice Moler of Las Vegas, NV. Also four granddaughters, Ali, Danae, Nicole, and Justine Madden all of Worland.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Steven, and his brother Karl.

Minnie Jacobsen

Minnie Jacobsen, 96, of Albin, Wyo, died Monday, October 2, 2000, at United Medical Center - West in Scottsbluff. A funeral service will be 1 p.m. Friday at the Albin Baptist Church with Pastor Dick Young officiating. Burial will be in the Albin cemetery.

A memorial has been established to the Albin Ambulance Fund.

She was born October 27 1903, in Epworth, Neb., to Gust and Anna (Anderson) Person. She was married to George Jacobsen April 9, 1932, in Kimball, Neb.

She was a homemaker. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Pine Bluffs and a Past Charter member the Gallio Club.

She is survived by her sons, George Wayne Jacobsen of Albin, Wyo., and Norman Carl Jacobsen of Albin, Wyo.; daughter, Elaine Ann Perrault Cheyenne, Wyo.; two step-sons, Ross Jacobsen of Georgia, and John B. Jacobsen of St. George, Utah; six grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death her parents; husband, George Jacobsen in 1976; brothers, Arland Person, David Person, Joseph Person and Carl Person and one sister, Elsie Rundell.

Schrader Funeral Home of Cheyenne, Wyo. is in charge of arrangements.

Edna Amanda Harms

Edna Amanda Harms, 82, of Gill, Colo., died October 1, 2000, at North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley, Colo. She is the mother of Chuck Harms of Pine Bluffs, Wyo.

Funeral services were Wednesday, October 4 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Greeley. Interment was at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Greeley.

She was born March 10, 1918 in Deshler, Neb., where she was reared and educated. She and her husband, Arthur Harms, lived 18 miles east of Grover, Colo., for 25 years. In 1979, they moved to Eaton, where they lived until moving to Gill in June of this year.

Survivors include her husband; son Chuck; daughter Judy Gonzales of Gill; one brother and two sisters; and eight grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Trinity Lutheran Building Fund, c/o Adamson Memorial West Chapel, 2000 47th Avenue, Greeley, Colo. 80634.

Ruby Lewis Kaderli

A former resident of Kimball, Ruby Lewis Kaderli, died at the age of 104 in Littleton, Colo., Sept. 27, 2000. She was born May 6, 1896 in Banner County, Neb.

Mrs. Kaderli was married To Chester C. Kaderli on Dec. 7, 1920. He died in 1963.

She taught in county schools and was chief telephone operator. She lived in Potter and Kimball for over 70 years, having come to Kimball in 1917. She moved to Denver in 1988.

She was a 50-year member of Easter Star, 50-year member of Royal Neighbors (past president), VFW Auxiliary (past president); Golden Future Club; United Methodist Church of Kimball; Banner County and Kimball Plains Historical Societies.

Survivors include a son, Ed Kaderli of Salt Lake City; daughter Barbara Harr, Englewood, Colo.; 3 grandchildren, 4 great grandsons and two great-granddaughters. She was preceded in death by her husband; son, Kenneth; infant daughter; and 7 sisters and 4 brothers.

She was the daughter of Emery and Eugenia (Banker) Lewis.

Graveside services were held Oct. 2, 2000 at the Kimball cemetery.

William H. Quinette III

William H. Quinette III, 74, of Denver, died September 22, 2000. He is the husband of Jane Mockett, formerly of Kimball.

Before becoming ill with multiple sclerosis, he spent many harvest seasons in Kimball working with his brothers-in-law Paul and John Mockett.

He is survived by his wife; sons Brian and Glen of Providence, R.I.; and his sister Jean of Riverside, Calif.

Leland Willoughby

Leland “Swede” N. Willoughby, 82, of Cheyenne, Wyo., died September 26, 2000, at United Medical Center-West.

Funeral services will be Friday, September 29, 10 a.m., at Schrader Chapel, with Rev. Delbert Hansen officiating. Burial will be at Burns cemetery.

He was born October 21, 1917, at Purdy, Iowa. He married Myrtle Cushatt October 14, 1939, at Kimball. He worked as a manager at United Airlines and grain elevators. He worked as a salesman for Halladay Motors for 22 years.

He is survived by his wife Myrtle of Cheyenne; Neil Willoughby of Dallas, Texas, William Willoughby of Greenbelt, Md. and Stephen Willoughby of White River Junction, Vt.; daughters Linda Williams and Jeanie Lenger, both of Loveland, Colo., and Diane Hurt of Rocky Ford, Colo.; 19 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters.
