Norma E. Prall, 93

(May 6) ALLIANCE - Norma E. Prall, 93, died Monday, May 5, 2003, at Highland Park Care Center. She was born Jan. 28, 1910, at Rosholt, S.D., to John Quincy and Nellie Belle (Briggs) Henderson.

She and her family moved to Alliance when she was a small child. She was married to Charles Wilber "Bill" Prall on Oct. 6, 1926, at Alliance. Norma and Wilber raised her sister, Lillian May (Henderson) Bauer after the family separated by the death of their mother. Norma and Wilber owned and operated a popular hamburger shop, Norma's Lunch at Alliance for many years. After selling the hamburger shop they moved to Arkansas and bought a small farm where they lived for several years. They then moved back to Alliance and re-opened the hamburger shop for a few more years. They then opened and operated a coin and hobby shop until 1983 when they moved to the Good Samaritan Village. Norma continued her crafts and hobbies producing many beautiful items for family and friends. Her hobbies included, enjoying time with her many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews, as well as her other family and friends. She also enjoyed nature, befriending a succession of birds and squirrels that came to her house for feeding. She was a member of the First Baptist Church. She is survived by her many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, sisters Lillian Bauer and Thelma Gills, brothers Herbert Henderson, Howard Henderson, Johnny Henderson, and Gerald Henderson, twin brother Norman Henderson, and an infant son.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, at the First Baptist Church, with Rev. James Rowe officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Alliance City Parks in care of Betty Bedient, 261 CR 70, Hemingford, NE 69348; or to the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jeane Jurgens, 49

(May 7) LODGEPOLE - Jeanne Jurgens, 49, of Lodgepole, died Friday, May 4, 2001 at the Memorial Health Center in Sidney. She was born March 10, 1952, at Sidney. Her parents were Joseph and Grace (Rubado) Teague.

She grew up at Lodgepole, and graduated from Lodgepole schools in 1970. She was married to Melvin "Ike" Jurgens on Nov. 20, 1970. He preceded her in death in 1981.

She is survived by one son, Aaron Jurgens of Derby, Kan.; one daughter, Darcie Dvorak of Prairie du Chien, Wis.; and four grandchildren. She \also is survived by two brothers, Robert Teague and Richard Teague of Lodgepole; three sisters, MaryJo From of Lodgepole, Susan Krois of Manassas, Va., and Linda Miller of Oconoowoc, Wis; one step-sister, Nancy Buterbaugh of Salt Lake City, Utah; two step-brothers, Kent Wise of Aurora, Colo., and Keith Wise of Parker, Colo.; and friend Norma Michelman of Lodgepole.

Mrs. Jurgens' funeral will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, May 8, at the St. Joseph's Catholic Church at Chappell, with Fathers Marty Egging, Gerald Carlson and Lyle Martin officiating. Burial will be in the Pleasant View Cemetery at Lodgepole. A Christian Wake service will be held at 7 p.m., Monday, May 7, at the church. Viewing will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday, May 7 at Holechek Funeral Home. A memorial fund has been established for a college fund for her grandchildren. Holechek Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Bernice B. Kearns, 77

(May 7) RUSHVILLE - Bernice Betty Kearns, 77 of Rushville, died Saturday, May 5, 2001 at the Gordon Memorial Hospital. She was born March 19, 1924, at Hay Springs. Her parents were Ernest and Mary (Heesacker) Blum.

She is survived by her husband, Gene of the home; one son, Tim. G. Kearns of Bellevue; one daughter, Mary Ellen Ott of Cheyenne, Wyo.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She also is survived by one sister Erneta Roark of Cortez, Colo.

Mrs. Kearns' funeral will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday, May 9, at Immaculate Conception Church, with Father Robert Karnish officiating. A wake service will be held at 7 p.m., Tuesday, May 8, at the church. A memorial has been established for the American Cancer Society, Immaculate Conception Church or Rushville Ambulance Fund. Donations may be sent to Security First Bank at Rushville. Chamberlain Mortuary of Rushville is in charge of arrangements.

William Schnurr, 90

(May 7) ALLIANCE - William "Bill" Eggert Schnurr, 90, died Sunday, May 5, 2002, at Alliance. He was born July 29, 1911, to Elsie Marie Rohwer Schnurr and Albert Louis Schnurr at the family home at Harrison.

He graduated from Sioux County High School in 1929 and the University of Wyoming in 1934, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Animal Science, Agronomy and Agriculture Education from the College of Agriculture. After college he worked for the Resettlement Administration, traveling in Western Nebraska and Wyoming. He worked in this government job during the summer, and then taught American History and coached girls and boys basketball (8th grade & High School) at Guernsey, Wyo. from 1935-1937. He then worked in Omaha with the Department of Agriculture's Farm Credit Administration in the Crop and Feed Loan Division. He married Martha Jayne Young on March 22, 1941, at St. Paul's Methodist Church at Omaha. In May 1941 he transferred to the Civilian Conservation Corp within the Department of Agriculture as an agronomist at Bridgeport.

When the C.C.C. camp was disbanded after the beginning of W. W. II he was appointed Conservationist for the Morrill County office of the Soil Conservation Service. In September 1946 he was transferred to Alliance as the Conservationist in charge of the newly established Soil Conservation Service office. He served as District Conservationist from August 1946 to July 1970. After 34 years of service, Bill retired in 1970. He was a firm believer in soil and water conservation and wrote many articles relating to the conservation practices used in Western Nebraska. He was a charter member of the Wyoming chapter of Alpha Zeta, Honorary Agriculture Fraternity, and played the saxophone in the University of Wyoming band. He was a member and former vestryman of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church.

He was a member of Guernsey Wyoming Lodge #49, A.F.&A.M., Alliance Scottish Rite, Cattle Capital Shrine Club and Tehama Shrine Temple of Hastings. He was a 50-year 32nd Degree Mason. He was also a life member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Lodge No.0961, the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie No.136, the American Legion Post #7, the Wyoming Pioneer Association, Toastmasters, Antique Club and Couples Dance Club. He was a lifetime member of the Sioux County Historical Society and was involved in genealogical research with the Northwest Genealogical Society.

He is survived by his beloved wife Jayne and his three daughters and their families: Kaye Hempel, husband Ted of Alliance and their sons Daniel Hempel and David Hempel of Lincoln; Karen Thorell, husband Jim of Denver, Colo., and their children and families; Michael Thorell, wife Elizabeth and daughters, Lauren and Alexandra of Scottsdale, Ariz.; Gregory Thorell, wife Amy and daughter Emma of Phoenix, Ariz.; William Thorell, wife Angela and son Evan of Omaha; Kathy Graham, husband Don of Scottsbluff and their children Maegen Graham of Omaha; Christopher Graham of Keamey; and Justin Graham of Scottsbluff; He also is survived by his brother Clarence Schnurr, wife Carroll of Harrison; and several nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation at the funeral home will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, May 10. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. A celebration of Bill's life will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 11, at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Alliance with Fr. Paul Mottl officiating. Internment will follow the service at 2 p.m. at the Harrison City Cemetery at Harrison. Memorials may be sent to Harrison Volunteer Fire Department and Sioux County Rescue, Harrison, St. Matthew's Church, Alliance, or to a memorial of the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mary C. Langer, 95

(May 7) ALLIANCE - Mary C. Langer, 95, died Monday, May 6, 2002, at Highland Park Care Center. She was born October 11, 1906, at Norden, to William and Anna (Simons) Langer.

She was the oldest of seven children. She contracted polio when she was three. She attended grammar school at Norden and four years at St. Mary's Academy at OâNeill. She graduated from St. Mary's Academy in 1926. In 1946 she came to Alliance and worked as a bookkeeper at St. Joseph's Hospital. She worked there for 35 years retiring in 1982. She then made St. Joseph's her home until moving to Highland Park Care Center in 1989. She is survived by her sisters Gertrude Foster and husband Clair of Valentine, and Irma Frederickson and husband Jim of Ainsworth. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Bill and George, sisters Anna Sherman and Sister Marianne, two nieces Sandra Ostblom and Lelonie Ford and a nephew Chester Fredrickson.

Visitation will be Sunday, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Bates-Gould Funeral Home. A rosary service will be at 9:30a.m., Monday, May 13, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Marian Residence, with Fr. Bryan Ernest officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery at Valentine. Bates-Gould Funeral Home of Alliance is in charge of arrangements.

Josephine Johnson, 86

(May 7) LINCOLN - Josephine Mollie McIntosh Johnson, 86, died May 6, 2002, at St. Elizabeth's Hospital. She was born Jan. 18, 1916, to J.C. and Mollie (Moire) Piel at Blue Hill.

She graduated from Mullen High School in 1933, and taught in rural schools for three years. On Oct. 12, 1936, she was married to Melvin "Bill" McIntosh. He preceded her in death on May 30, 1978. She was married to Jim Johnson of North Platte on April 14, 1984. He preceded her in death on Feb. 14, 2002. She worked at Mullen Co-op for many years and enjoyed working with the public. Everyone was her friend. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She is survived by her children Janet (Wayne) Gorsuch of Alliance, Melva (Bud) Taylor of Hyannis, Dale (Denise) McIntosh of Springfield, Mo., and Melvin (Kelle) McIntosh of Mullen; ten grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She also is survived by one sister, Dorothy Sexton of Hyannis; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and one sister. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Mrs. Johnson's funeral will be at 2 p.m. MDT, Thursday, May 9, at the United Methodist Church at Mullen. Burial will be at Cedarview Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday, May 8, at Mullen Funeral Home. A memorial has been established. Mullen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. .

Marie D. (Cesare) Roes, 74

(May 7) ALLIANCE - Marie D. (Cesare) Roes, died Monday, May 5, 2003, at Box Butte General Hospital in Alliance, Neb. She was born July 14, 1928, in West Bangor, Pa., to Salvatore and Rose (Buglio) Cesare. Salvatore was an Italian immigrant.

Marie was raised in West Bangor, graduated from Pen Argyl High School and Easton Business College. She was part of an incredible Italian family of 14 children, the Cesare family shared love, laughter and joy in family, friends and great Italian food. Marie moved to California and worked as a legal secretary in Los Angeles. She met Edmund Joseph (Bud) Roes skiing at Big Bear Mountain in California. The couple was married June 27, 1953, in San Gabriel, Calif. To this union four children were born, Edmund Joseph (Buddy) Jr., Joni Marie, David Eugene, and James Anthony. Her family's devotion is the result of the dedication and love she gave to them. The most priceless gifts she had were her grandchildren, Taylor and Gina, Zack, April, Brody, Renee, Cody, Braden and Brooke, Mitzi and Tabitha. Marie loved celebrating life with her husband, children and grandchildren. A lasting legacy and warm memory for all who know Marie was the welcoming aromas and friendship shared in her kitchen, which was always open. She had a strong belief in God and loved her family and the richness of her special friends, she did not know a stranger. She was a member of St. Bridget Catholic Church, St. Bridget Altar Society; she was the first female school board member in Hemingford and a proud Block Mother. Marie also operated a harvest meal catering business in Hemingford for a short period of time; co-owner and business manager for Roes Trucking, Inc. She loved cooking, flowers, and sports, especially watching her grandchildren and the Nebraska Cornhuskers Marie's six and one-half year journey of kidney dialysis required a great amount of courage and strength on her part to endure her renal treatments three days a week. She amazed all who watched her determination during this time. The Box Butte General Hospital Dialysis Unit was dedicated in honor of Bud and Marie Roes in 2000. The special care given to her by Gayle Molyneux, nurses and doctors at the hospital will be forever remembered by her family. Her legacy is her family and those who survive her: Edmund (Bud) Roes, of their home, Hemingford; her daughter, Joni and Donnie Jespersen, Hemingford; sons, David and Jodi Roes, Hemingford, and Jamie and Sandy Roes, Chadron; grandchildren, Taylor and Gina Jespersen, Zack, Mitzi and Tabitha Vasa, April and Brody Roes, Renee, Cody, Braden and Brooke Roes; Marie's twin sister, Marge Verrone, Rosemead, Calif.; sister, Arlene and Ray Byers, San Diego, Calif.; brothers, Anthony and Barb Cesare of Stroudsburg, Pa., Richard Cesare of Lakewood, Calif., Carmen Cesare, Las Vegas, Nev., George and Mary Jo Cesare, Encinitas, Calif.; brothers-in-law, Thomas Parry, Baldwin Park, Calif., Ken and Joan Taylor, Sun City, Calif., Guy and Dee Elder, Alliance, Neb.; 35 nieces and nephews and over 50 great nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were, her beloved son Buddy, her parents, in-laws, Henry and Caroline Roes. Sisters and brothers-in-law, Celeste Cesare, Fran Parry, Kay/Steve Tortorelli, Josephine/Attillio Abruzzese, Jenny/Pete Manfredo, Nick Cesare, Joseph Cesare, Joan Cesare, Virginia Cesare, Charlie Verrone, Marv/Leona Nurenberger; nephews, Lyle, Ron, Jerry Lindamood, Bob Either, Howard VanVuren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, May 8, 2003, at 10 a.m. at St. Bridget Catholic Church in Hemingford, with Father Bryan Ernest officiating. Burial to be in the Hemingford Cemetery. A wake service will be held Wednesday, May 7, at 7 p.m. at St. Bridget Church. Memorials may be given to BBGH Dialysis Unit, Hemingford Volunteer Fireman's Association or to a charity of the donor s choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

John O. Wilken, 76

(May 8) ESTHERVILLE, Iowa - John Otto Wilken, 76, died Friday, April 26, 2002, at his home. He was born on Aug. 17, 1925, at Atlantic, Iowa. His parents were Herman and Sadie Olive (Jones) Wilken.

He married Leona Reich on Dec. 25, 2945, at Atlantic. He graduated from Simpson College in 1958. He taught high school English and Drama and coached football; worked in radio broadcasting for a number of years, and served as Director of the Chamber of Commerce at Alliance and other cities. He worked in economic development for Western Nebraska, Northern Colorado and Southern Wyoming. He is survived by his wife, Leona of the home; two daughters, Cindy Sievers of Omaha, Ark. and Celeste Hockom of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; two sons, Mark Wilken of Spencer, Iowa, and Eric Wilken of Louisville, Colo.; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He also is survived by two sisters, Bobbie Dunn of Atlantic, and Betty Draman of Huntington Beach, Calif.

Mr. Wilken's memorial service was Wednesday, May 1, at the United Methodist Church at Atlantic.

Dale E. Shanks, 65

(May 8) ALLIANCE - Dale Earl Shanks, 65, died May 6, 2002, at Box Butte General Hospital. He was born July 23, 1936, at Gordon, to Robert and Gladys (Harris) Shanks.

He graduated from Gordon High School in 1954 and served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957 at Fort Rucker, Ala. He married Sandra Jean Rathbun at the Presbyterian Church at Gordon on Jan. 12, 1958. He worked for the Co-op Grain Company at Gordon and as manager of the Co-op Grain Company at Sidney, before beginning his career with the Production Credit in Alliance in 1965. After serving as PCA Branch Manager at Chadron, he was president of the Scottsbluff PCA. He retired from the Abbott Bank in Alliance in 1993. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and had served as elder and trustee. He is survived by his wife Sandra of the home; son and daughter-in-law Gary and Marcia Shanks of Gillette, Wyo.; daughter Gina Zwart of Parker, Colo.; grandchildren, Collin, Chad and Connor Shanks of Gillette, Casey and Briana Zwart of Parker; and step-granddaughter Amanda Wentz of Gillette. He also is survived by one sister-in-law, Sandi Shanks of Gordon; and many nieces, nephews, family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Friday, May 10, at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dr. Stephen T. Roosa officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 396, Alliance, NE 69301-0396; or to the American Cancer Society. Bates-Gould Funeral Home of Alliance is in charge of arrangements.

Lewis D. Folk, 84

(May 8) MULLEN - Lewis Don Folk, 84, died May 6, 2002, at his home. He was born Jan. 9, 1938 at Alliance. His parents were Lewis and Inez (Carpenter) Folk.

He was a lifelong sandhill resident and businessman. He and his brother operated the farmers Elevator & Propane. He was a member of the National Guard for six years and served in North Platte. He married Lois Gall at Haxtun, Colo., on June 30, 1963. His hobbies were fishing, hunting and sports. He was a member of the United Methodist Church at Mullen. He is survived by his wife, Lois; and son Drew Folk of Mullen. He also is survived by his mother-in-law, Hazel Gall; brother, Jim and Ruby Folk of Mullen; and two sisters Jacquline and Jerry Homan of Salisbury, Mo., and Marion and Marty Downing of Whitman. He was preceded in death by his parents and father-in-law.

Mr. Fold's funeral will be at 11 a.m. MDT, Friday, May 10, at the United Methodist Church at Mullen, with Rev. David Lux and Rev. Delbert King officiating. Burial will be in Cedarview Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, May 9, at Mullen Funeral Home. Memorials may be given to the United Methodist Church at Mullen or the donor's choice. Mullen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

George D. Watson, 79

(May 8) BRIDGEPORT - George D. Watson, 79, of Bridgeport, died Tuesday, May 6, 2003, at the Western Nebraska Veterans Home in Scottsbluff. George was born Feb. 6, 1924, at Alliance, Neb., the son of Jesse and Malvory (Zobel) Watson.

He attended a rural school, graduating from Alliance High School with the Class of 1941. He was inducted in the United States Army and served in the infantry in the Philippines during World War II. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and several other medals for his service to his country. He was honorably discharged in October of 1949. On Nov. 3, 1946, he married Tonie Yu Tiampo at Basek Army Base in Tacleban, Leyte, Philippines. George did ranch work, was employed at the Sioux Ordinance Depot in Sidney, and managed the Bridgeport Gas Company, which later merged with Panhandle Coop. He was a lifetime member of the PTA, past scout master for Troop 14, coached baseball, was a member of All Souls Catholic Church and served on the parish council, was a member of St. Benedict's Men's Prayer Group, was active in Marriage Encounter, and was recognized as the 1993 Bridgeport B-Club Booster of the Year. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 56 years Tonie Watson of Bridgeport; sons and daughters-in-law Rick and Pat Watson of Fremont, Neb., and George, Jr. and Kit Watson of Chadron; daughters and sons-in-law Dianne and Tim Turman of Wahoo, Neb., and Karen and Andy Pope of Chadron; 15 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; brothers Jesse Watson of Bayard, Bill (Connie) Watson of Alliance, and Jack (Shirley) Watson of Scottsbluff; sisters Betty (Lyle) Grant of Alliance, Mary Ann Blackstone of Bayard, Malvory (Jim) Shankland of Hyannis, and Ilene Christensen of Bridgeport; sister-in-law Rose Watson of Bridgeport; and numerous nieces and nephews. His parents, sisters Alice Twombly and Bonnie Egan, and brother Dan Watson preceded him in death.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, May 9, at All Souls Catholic Church in Bridgeport, with Father David Rykwalder officiating. A vigil service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 8, at the church. Interment, with military honors by the Bridgeport Honor Guard, will be held at the Oregon Trail Memorial Cemetery at Bridgeport. Memorials may be given to All Souls Catholic Church in George's memory. Jolliffe Funeral Home in Bridgeport is in charge of the arrangements.

Bernard K. Moomey, 83

(May 10) ALLIANCE - Bernard K. Moomey, 83, died Wednesday, May 9, 2001 at Box Butte General Hospital. He was born September 3, 1917 at Gresham, Nebraska to Hubert and Rose (Jacobson) Moomey.

On July 5, 1938, he married Lorella L. Obermiller in Central City, Nebraska. In 1939 they moved to Alliance and he began working for the C.B.& Q Railroad. He retired as a Locomotive Engineer in 1978. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, a lifetime member of the Eagles and Elks Lodge.

He is survived by his wife Lorella, his children and their spouses, Sharron and Marlow Anderson of Rockford, Ill., Dr. Larry and Judith Moomey of Lexington, Brenda and Clint Hungerford of San Antonio, Texas and Bradley K. and Patricia Moomey of Alliance; grandchildren, Kevin Anderson of Fort Collins, Colo., Derek Anderson of Rockford, Ill, Amy Gehrke of Loveland, Colo, Kara Smith of Lexington, Justin Moomey of Hastings, Tiffiney Mulieri, Mindy Moring, Torey Amici, and Kelsy Hungerford all of San Antonio, Hilory Parker of Fredricksburg, Texas, Brian Moomey of Cheyenne, Wyo., Shane Moomey and Jeff Moomey of Alliance, and Samantha Moomey of Chadron, and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 12, at the First Presbyterian Church in Alliance. The Reverend Arlys Wilbur will officiate. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. The family prefers memorials to the First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 396, Alliance, NE 69301 or to Prairie Haven Hospice, P.O. Box 21, Alliance. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
