Anita L. Brown

Anita L. Brown, 51, of Charlotte, North Carolina, formerly of Wood River, died Saturday, July 29, 2000, at her home. She is the sister of Billy Hinton of Kimball.

Funeral services will be Friday, August 4, 10 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Wood River, with the Rev. Rose Bartleson officiating. Burial will be at the Grand Island city cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday evening from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Apfel Funeral Home in wood River.

She was born on July 20, 1948, to Curtis and Thelma Hinton at Kilgore, Texas. She graduated from Linden High School in Linden, Kan.

She married Phil Watts on July 24, 1966, at Sidney, Neb. The couple moved to Wood River in 1967. She was employed by Treasure City and Eakes in Grand Island. After her husband’s death, she moved to Hastings in 1985 and continued to work for Eakes. In 1987, she moved to Lincoln and worked for Business World Products. In 1989, she moved to chicago, where she worked for IBICO selling office products.

She married Taylor Brown in October 1990 in Wood River. The couple lived in Chicago until 1998, when they moved to Charlotte.

Survivors include her husband Taylor of Charlotte; son Phil of Wood River; mother Thelma Hinton of Alabama; brother Billy Hinton of Kimball, Curtis Richard Hinton of Louisiana and Curtis Lee Hinton of Alabama; five sisters and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her first husband; one son; and two brothers.

Memorials can be made to the Wood River Foundation or the Wood River Rescue Squad.

Lzena Tiner

Kimball resident Lzena Tiner, 78, of Kimball, formerly of Alameda, Calif., died Tuesday, July 25, 2000, at her home.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 31 in California. Burial was at Holy Sepulcher cemetery in Hayward, Calif.

She was born December 14, 1921. to Millard Oliver and Rosie Lee (Collins) Jenkins in Pontotoc Center, Okla. While living in California, she worked for Colgate-Palmolive as part of the WWII efforts, working as a civilian in the shipyards. She lived in Alameda, California for a number of years and moved to Kimball in May of 1999.

She is survived by sons Glendel Tiner of Roseville, Calif., William Tiner of Grey Eagle, Calif., and Raymond Tiner of Pueblo, Colo.; daughters Linda Lillquist of Fullerton, Calif., and Darlene Tiner of Kimball; four brothers and sisters; 14 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren.

Cantrell Funeral Home of Kimball is in charge of local arrangements.

Sidney L. Olsen

Former Kimball resident Sidney L. Olsen, 81, of Independence, Miss., died July 14, 2000, at Southern Inyo Hospital. He is the brother of Henry and William Olsen of Harrisburg.

A rosary and funeral mass were Thursday, July 20, at the Santa Rosa Catholic Church in Lone Pine, with Father Francis Simeone officiating. Gravesite military honors were conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8036. He was a 20-year resident of southern Owens Valley, living in Independence for the past 15 years.

He was born in Kimball on February 28, 1919. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He belonged to VFW Post 8036. He was a member of the Lions Club from 1980-85, serving as president for the club.

Survivors include his wife Margeret Olsen of Independence; son Martin Olsen of Long Beach; daughters Jo Ann LaChance of Huntington Beach and Sidney Russell of La Quinta; brothers Henry and William Olsen, both of Harrisburg, and Albert Olsen of Helena, Mont.; sisters Mary Lewis, Lois Stanfield and Reva Spiller, all of Texas; seven grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren.

Emma Goranson

Emma Christina Goranson, of Kimball, died Saturday, July 29, 2000, at the Kimball County Manor.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Thursday, August 3, at the First English Lutheran Church in Kimball, with the Rev. Larry Spomer officiating. Burial will be in Kimball cemetery. Visitation hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday, August 2, at the Cantrell Funeral Home.

She was born on January 30, 1917, on the family farm near Colton in Cheyenne County, Neb., to Jacob and Anna (Nun) Zimmerman. She was educated in Cheyenne County rural schools.

On September 10, 1941, she married J. R. (Joyce) Goranson in Sidney, Neb. They made their first home on a farm west of Gurley, Neb.

She was a member of the First English Lutheran Church, a former Sunday school and Bible school teacher, and a member of the women's organizations of the church. She was an Avon representative for 21 years and a cancer survivor.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Marlene and Wayne Downer of Harrisburg, son and daughter-in-law, Daryl and Miki Goranson of Utah; granddaughters Lynne Koski of Creston, Neb., Shelly Koehler and Susan Nitz of Norfolk, Neb., and Cassi Goranson of Williston, N.D.; grandsons Bradley Goranson of Williston, N.D. and Jordan Goranson of Utah; two great-grandchildren Kristin and Aaron Koski of Creston, Neb.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband J. R., five brothers and four sisters.

Cantrell Funeral Home of Kimball is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Christine Villavicencio

Former Kimball resident Christine M. Villavicencio, 62, of Las Cruces, N.M., died July 16, 2000, at Centro Medico de Americas in Cuidad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico.

Funeral services were Thursday, July 20 at Baca’s Funeral Chapel in Las Cruces, with Pastor David Harrelson and Pastor Danny McKinney officiating. Concluding services and interment were in Masonic cemetery in Las Cruces.

She was born in Tyler, Texas July 24, 1937, to Fidel and Luciana Marques Morales. She had been living in the Las Cruces area for the past fifteen years. She was a homemaker and a member of the University of Christ Church.

She is survived by her husband Antonio of Las Cruces; sons and daughters-in-law Daniel and Debbie of Fort Worth, Texas, Raymond and Mayela of Athens, Greece; daughters and sons-in-law Angela and Kevin Baker of Rock Springs, Wyo. Pamela and Michael Highfill of Denver; brother Roque Morales of Denver; sisters Isabel Ortega of Lyman, Neb., Mary Morales and Jane Riley, both of Scottsbluff; and ten grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; children Susan and Stephen Villavicencio; three brothers and one sister.

Memorials can be made to the University Church of Christ, 1555 University Ave., Las Cruces, N.M., 88001.

Mel Argo

Former Kimball resident Mel Argo, 82, of Shelton, Neb., died at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island on Wednesday, July 19, 2000.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, July 22, 2000, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Kimball, with the Rev. Francis Curran as celebrant. Burial will be in the Kimball cemetery. A prayer vigil was conducted on Thursday, June 20 at the Apfel Funeral Home in Wood River, Neb.

He was born September 9, 1917, in Kenesaw, Neb. to Alfred and Maude (Leisinger) Argo. He grew up in Shelton, graduating in 1934. He lived and worked in Grand Island.

On February 24, 1940, he married Eunice Henry at Grand Island. The couple lived there until moving to Alliance in 1963. Later that same year they moved to Kimball, where they operated a Phillips 66 service station and bulk plant from 1965 to 1975. After his wife's death, he returned to Shelton in 1994.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shelton. While living in Kimball, he was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law James and Betty Argo of Loveland, Colo.; daughter Jeannette James of Blair, Neb.; daughters-in-law Kathy Argo of Kimball and Tammi Argo-Ray of Thornton, Colo., sister Marjorie Felps of Shelton, nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Eunice in March 13, 1993; sons Don and Steve; and one brother and one sister.

Memorial gifts may be made to St. Joseph's Church or to Prairie Haven Hospice in care of the funeral home.

Marjorie Helen Stauffer

Marjorie Helen (Wilkinson) Stauffer, 81, of Harrisburg, died Saturday, July 22, 2000, at the Village at Regional West in Scottsbluff.

A funeral service was held Tuesday, July 26 at the Gering Memorial Chapel, with Father Thomas Miles officiating. Burial was at the Kimball cemetery.

She was born July 4, 1919, to Felix and Jessie (Barfloot) Wilkinson at their home in Banner County.

She attended grade school in Kimball and graduated from high school at Harrisburg in 1937. One of the highlights of her life was when Mr. Burchfield took a bus load of kids to Yellowstone National Park in 1936.

She attended Chadron State College, where she majored in teaching, and then taught school at District #27 in Banner County for one year.

She married Robert S. Stauffer in Torrington, Wyo., on October 1, 1939. She was a homemaker and drove a school bus for the Banner County School for many years.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Mary and Ron Stahla of Lexington, Neb.; son and daughter-in-law Jim and Judy Stauffer of Harrisburg; son Frank Stauffer and special friend Margie Moss of Minatare, Neb.; sisters Elizabeth Johnson of LaGrange, Wyo. and Edris Alvestead of California; brother Jim Wilkinson of Morrill, Neb.; and ten grandchildren and 18 great-grandchilren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one grandson; and two sisters.

Memorials may be made to the Harrisburg Episcopal Church.

Gering Memorial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Clara Bragg

Former Bushnell resident Clara Bragg, 79, of Casper, Wyoming, died at her residence at the Life Care Center of Casper on Sunday, July 9, 2000.

A funeral service for Mrs. Bragg was Saturday, July 15, 2000, at the Cantrell Funeral Home in Kimball. Burial will be in the Bushnell cemetery at Bushnell.

She was born September 20, 1920, at Orchard, Neb. to Guy and Hila (Butterfield) Cook. She married Glenn Bragg April 3, 1936, at O'Neill, Nebraska. The couple farmed at Clearwater, Nebraska for twelve years before moving to Gering. They later lived at Harrisburg for three years and moved to Bushnell in 1962.She moved to Casper four years ago.

She is survived by her son Lawrence Bragg of Ringwood, Okla; daughters Sarah Bridge of Pine Bluffs, Wyo., Mary Dilky of Mitchell, Neb., Rose McLaughlin of Casper, Wyo., and Vicki Lovell of Phoenix, Ariz.; sister Jessie McBain of Portland, Ore.;14 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband on August 31, 1988, one son, one daughter, a grandson and a great granddaughter.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Clara Bragg Memorial Fund in care of the family.

Jeraldine (Flohr) Soper

Jeraldine J. (Flohr) Soper, 73, died Friday, July 7, 2000, at Oak Hill Hospital in Brooksville, Fla.

She was cremated and her ashes will be buried in the Littleton cemetery in Littleton, Colo.

She was born in Kimball to Phillip and Pauline Flohr. She graduated from Kimball County High School. She lived in Ogallala, Neb., Ft. Collins, Colo., Highlands Ranch, Colo., and spent the past five years in Brooksville, Fla.

She is survived by her husband Willard of Brooksville, Fla.; sister Rosella Larrison of Wilsonville, Ore., and two grandchildren Phillip Abbott of Las Crucis, N.M. and Katherine Abbot of Albuquerque, N.M.

Memorials can be made to the United Methodist Church in Ogallala.

Ray Soto

Kimball resident Ray Soto, 73, died Wednesday, July 12, 2000, in Cheyenne, Wyo.

Mass of Christian Burial was Saturday, July 15, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Kimball. Burial was in the Kimball cemetery. The Rosary recitation services were Friday, July 14, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

He was born January 6, 1927, at Eaton, Colo. to John and Alexandria Soto. He grew up in Pine Bluffs, Wyo. and moved to Kimball in 1957. He married Bonnie Siebenaler May 16, 1959, at Kimball.

He served with the U. S. Marine Corp and was in the South Pacific during World War II. He also served during the Korean Conflict.

He worked for the City of Kimball from 1957 until 1993 when he retired as line superintendent. After retiring from the City of Kimball he worked at Cabela's.

He spent over 25 years as a member of the Kimball Volunteer Fire Department and was a life member of the VFW. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, and a former member of the Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by his wife Bonnie of Kimball; sons and daughters-in-law David and Lisa Soto of Grand Island, Neb., and John and Lisa Soto of Sidney; sisters Josie Rea and Emma Ornelas, both of Pine Bluffs, and Connie Garcia of Washington; brothers Dario Soto of Medicine Bow, Wyo., Alex Soto of Arizona, Martin Soto of Denver, and Laverne Soto of California; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Chris Soto, two sisters and his parents.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Ray Soto Memorial Fund in care of the family.

Marvin D. Bowden

Former Kimball resident Marvin (Mike) D. Bowden, 72, died June 25, 2000 at his home in Wellton, Ariz.

He was born December 28, 1927, to Joe and Lillian Bowden at Overton, Neb. He served in the U.S. Army’s 47th engineers from 1950 to 1952 at Fort Riley, Kan. He married Sherry (Welch) on August 9, 1952, at Enid, Okla. He worked for John Deere Plow Company for 18 years and 24 years for KN Energy Gas Company at Kimball.

He is survived by his wife, Sherry; son Edward of California; foster daughter Lynn Kudebeh and husband Larry of Yucca Valley, Calif.; sister Dorothy McCannon of Kearney, Neb.; grandchildren Jennifer Greenwood and husband Kenny, Stephanie, Kimberly and J.R. Westby, all of Kimball; great grandsons Jeffry and Jordan Greenwood, both of Kimball; and three nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents and several aunts and uncles.
