Rev. Clarence Smith

Rev. Clarence W. Smith, 89, of Fort Collins, Colorado, died June 22, 2000, at the Columbine Care Center West. He served as pastor of the Trinity United Methodist church in Kimball from 1953 to 1963.

A memorial service was held June 26 at Christ United Methodist Church in Fort Collins.

He was born on January 20, 1911 in Waterloo, Iowa to Russell B. and Mabel L. (Combellick) Smith. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1929. He married Helen K. Forburger Sept. 13, 1935, in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

He received degrees from Nebraska Wesleyan University in 1938, Boston University School of Theology in 1942 and a master's degree in journalism from the University of Wyoming in 1942. He served a United Methodist Pastor all his life.

He had served as pastor of Trinity United Methodist Church in Kimball from 1953 to 1963. He also lived in Littleton, Colo., Chugwater, Wyo., and has been a resident of Fort Collins since 1986.

He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Senior Harmonetts Choral Group, served on the Conference Board of Missions, Conference Communications Committee, University of Wyoming Wesley Foundation Board. He also served as a Director of the Rocky Mountain Methodist Conference Historical Society, on the Nebraska Conference Boards and in many Nebraska district church activities.

He is survived by son Russell C. Smith of Belgrade, Mont.; daughter-in-law Marsha Smith-Franz of Loveland, Colo.; brothers Leonard Smith of Lincoln, Neb., and Glenn Smith of Scottsdale, Ariz.; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his wife Helen, his parents, and one son.

Memorial gifts may be made to Habitat for Humanity or Christ United Methodist Church in care of Allnutt Funeral Service in Fort Collins.

LaVerna Neoma Fanning

LaVerna Neoma Fanning, 77, died Monday evening, June 19, 2000, at the Imperial Manor Nursing Home in Imperial, Neb. She is the sister of Arlene Prince of Kimball.

Funeral services will be held June 23, 10 a.m. at the Westside Church of Christ, Imperial. Interment will follow at Riverside cemetery, Wauneta. Visitation will be held Thursday 2-6 p.m. at the Liewer Funeral Home in Imperial.

She was born October 14, 1922, on the Fanning homestead located eight miles northeast of Wauneta, Neb., to Harry and Lucy (Manning) Fanning. She was educated in the Hayes and Chase County Schools. She received her bachelor of science and her master’s degree in elementary education from Chadron State College. She retired in 1989, ending a teaching career that spanned 49 years.

She was a member of the Westside Church of Christ and the state and national teaching associations.

Survivors include her sister Arlene Prince of Kimball; one sister-in-law; two nephews, including Gary Peters of Pine Bluffs, Wyo.; two nieces, including Denise Bingham of Kimball; and 11 great-nieces and nephews; four great-great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother; one brother-in-law; two nephews; one great-nephew; and one great-niece.

A memorial has been established to the Westside Church of Christ and the American Cancer Society.

Marjorie Brown

Former Banner County resident Marjorie J. (Streeks) Brown, 81, of Scottsbluff died Sunday, June 11, 2000, at the Residency in Scottsbluff.

Funeral services will be held Friday, June 16, 11 a.m., at the Calvary Memorial Evangelical Free Church in Gering, with Pastor Charlie Hornick and Pastor Charles Bonds officiating. Interment will be at High Butte cemetery in McGrew. Following the graveside service, a luncheon will be served at the Central Church of Christ in Gering. Friends may call at the Jolliffe Funeral Home on Thursday, from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m., and at the funeral.

She was born July 16, 1918, in Banner County to George and Hazel (Lalley) Streeks. She attended School District #42 until eighth grade and graduated from Banner County High School in 1936.

She married George H. Brown in Kimball on December 9, 1937. They farmed and ranched in Banner County until February 1993, when they moved to the Residency in Scottsbluff.

She was a member of the Wright’s Project Club, Banner County Historical Society, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary #2998). She was vice-president of the Old Settlers Division of Oregon Trail Days in 1986. She was appointed as an Admiral of the Great Navy of the State of Nebraska by Gov. Bob Kerry.

She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law Joan and Stan Cross of Tacoma, Wash., and Julia and Roger Rogers of Colgate, Wis.; son and daughter-in-law Terry and Linda Brown of Harrisburg; brother and sister-in-law Bill and Glenna Streeks of Harrisburg; brother-in-law Dick Maycumber of Denver; sister-in-laws Edith Streeks of Banner County and Myrtle Streeks of Douglas, Wyo.; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers and three sisters.

Mary Swanson

Mary Swanson, 67, of Bushnell, died Thursday, June 8, 2000, at Fort Morgan, Colo., following an extended illness.

Funeral services were Monday, June 12, at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Kimball, with the Rev. Roger Gillming and the Rev. Phillip Tarmen officiating. Burial was in Kimball cemetery.

She was born May 16, 1933, at Fleming, Colo., to Carl and Emma (Madsen) Peterson. She married Roger Swanson September 25, 1949, in Sidney, Neb. They have lived and farmed south of Bushnell since 1949.

She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church of Kimball, Midway Club, Merry Workers Extension Club, and the Nebraska State Genealogical Society.

She is survived by her husband Roger; sons Robin of Dix and Rodney of Windsor, Colo.; daughters Dianne Wicks of Burns, Wyo., and Kristy Moehr of Fort Morgan, Colo.; six grandchildren; sisters Ruby Adams of Bayard, Neb., and Julia Rodman of Evans, Colo.; and brother Carl Peterson of Gering, Neb.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one grandson.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church in Kimball.

Cantrell Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Esther Kaczmarek

Esther Frances Kaczmarek, 72, of Kimball, died Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at her home.

Funeral services were Friday, June 2 at the Cantrell Funeral Home in Kimball, with Pastor Virgil Johnson officiating. Burial was in Dix Rural cemetery.

She was born May 20, 1928, in Climbing Hill, Iowa to Rodney and Nellie (Geyer) Weikel. She spent two years in Missouri before moving back to Onawa, Iowa, until her senior year of school.

She moved to Omaha and spent her last year of high school in Omaha. She worked for Mutual of Omaha for a short while before moving to Hastings to attend Hastings College for two years.

She moved to the Kimball/Dix area in 1952. She married Bob Kaczmarek May 16, 1953, in Dix.

She was a member of Dix Presbyterian Church until it closed.

She is survived by her husband Bob of Kimball; sons Richard Kaczmarek of Dix, Roger Kaczmarek of Kimball; one daughter Diane Sabus and her husband Fred of Pueblo, Colo.; granddaughter Hannah Evertson and one brother Harold Weikel of San Diego, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one son Rodney and five brothers and one sister.

Cantrell Funeral Home of Kimball is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Memorial gifts may be made to Nebraska Children's Home, the Alliance Boys Ranch or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Emma J. Curless

Emma J. Curless, 72, of Pine Bluffs, Wyo., died Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at her home in Pine Bluffs.

A service of Christian burial was Friday, June 2, at All Saints' Episcopal Church in Wheatland, Wyo., with Rev. Cliff Moore officiating. Internment was at Wheatland cemetery. A memorial service was Monday, June 5 at the United Methodist Church in Pine Bluffs, with Rev. Terrilynn Russ officiating.

She was born in Werner, N.D., December 8, 1927, to August H. and Mary (Merslack) Unverzagt. At a young age, she moved to the Veteran/Yoder Wyo., area. She attended the Veteran school where she graduated in 1945. She later moved to Sidney, Neb., where she was manager of the Western Union office.

She married John Curless in Sidney December 14, 1947. They lived for many years in Sidney. They then moved to Cheyenne, Wyo., where she worked as a bookkeeper at Memorial Hospital. In 1977, they moved to Pine Bluffs where she was the bookkeeper for a local clinic until retiring. She was instrumental in starting the local museum and was a member of the Past Time Club.

She is survived by her husband John of Pine Bluffs; children Timothy and John J. Jr., both of Pine Bluffs, Callae McManus of Wheatland and Cheri Santini of Cheyenne; three brothers; three sisters; and five grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son; one brother; one sister; one half-sister; four half-brothers; one grandson; and one great-granddaughter.

Memorials can be made to the National Jewish Hospital, in care of Jack Curless, 1413 State Road 215, Pine Bluffs, Wyo. 82082.

Ruby Corine Belgum

Ruby Corine Huff Belgum, 78, of Port Angeles, Wash., died May 22, 2000.

She was cremated and there were no funeral services. Her remains will be scattered over the mountains of Port Angeles and Puget Sound.

She was born to Rolla Austin and Ida Mabel (Harger) Huff in Fort Scott, Kan., where she also received her schooling. She moved to San Diego, Calif., and was a band saw operator during World War II. After the war, she was employed for many years as a telephone order clerk for Brunswick Wholesale Drug Co.

She married Merrill K. Belgum in Yuma, Ariz., on April 9, 1944. They lived and traveled throughout the United States and many countries because of her husband’s military career with the Navy and as a field service representative with the Navy and Marine Corps.

In 1985, they made Port Angeles their permanent home.

She is survived by her husband and preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

Wilma Jean Rux

Kimball resident Wilma Jean Rux, 84, died Friday, September 24, 1999, at the Kimball County Manor.

Graveside services were Wednesday, September 29 at the Kimball cemetery with The Rev. Francis Curran will officiate. A memorial service will be Thursday, September 30 at the Kimball County Manor Chapel.

She was born on October 3, 1914, to Robert and Lydia (Willowghby) Rux in Buckley, Wash. and was baptized on June 8, 1925, by a Lutheran church minister in Alma, Neb.

In June 1969, she moved from the Beatrice State Home to the Kimball County Manor, whose residents and staff have been her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Fredrick Lewis Eby, Sr.

Fredrick Lewis Eby, Sr., 80, of Kimball died Thursday, September 23, 1999, at his home.

Cremation will take place. A memorial service and burial of cremated remains will take place on Thursday, September 30 at the Kimball cemetery.

He was born at Burks, Neb. to Virgil and Minnie (Johnson) Eby on November 8, 1918. He was orphaned at a young age and was raised by his maternal grandmother in California. He spent a number of years in California as a young man and came to Kimball in 1968. He worked for Oil Field Pipe and Supply until retiring in 1981.

He married Nancy Wilson in Kimball on May 25, 1978.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy; son, Fred Eby, Jr. of Greeley, Colo., daughters Patricia Wimberley of Tulsa, Okla., Mary Adkins of El Dorado, Ark., and Fredricka Hall of Sidney, Neb.; brother C. S. Eby of Yuma, Ariz.; a number of step-children including a stepson Francis William Setzer of Kimball; 15 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son Ralph J. Eby, an infant daughter Brenda Sue and two brothers, Bob, and Jick Eby.

Cantrell Funeral Home of Kimball is in charge of arrangements.

Virgil C. Staab

Virgil C. Staab, 77, of Kimball, died Saturday, September 25, 1999, at his home.

Mass of Christian Burial was Wednesday, September 29, at the Cantrell Funeral Home in Kimball, with the Rev. Francis Curran officiating. Burial was in Kimball cemetery. Recitation of the Rosary was Tuesday, September 28 at the Cantrell Funeral Home.

He was born February 10, 1922, in Catherine, Kan. to Cosmas and Katherine (Weigel) Staab. He was raised in Kansas and later moved to Colorado where he farmed for a number of years.

He married Mary Frieberger on April 18, 1944 in Julesburg, Colo. They moved from Colorado to Kimball in 1950.

In Kimball, he worked in the oil fields and was a heavy equipment operator. He worked on several of the area missile sites. He had also managed the Jet Gas in Kimball and had worked for Schadegg Oil. He retired in 1984.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus and was a 4th Degree Knight. He was also a member of Kimball VFW Post #2243 and a member of the Operating Engineers Union.

He is survived by his wife Mary of Kimball; sons Gary D. Staab and his wife Carmen of Eden, Wyo., and Virgil Staab, Jr. of Kimball; daughters Diane Ikuta and her husband Mits of LaMirada, Calif., Linda Villalobos and her husband Ventura of Rock Springs, Wyo., Cheryl Bates and her husband Larry of Ft. Morgan, Colo., and Carmen Ramos and her husband Ernie of McLaughlin, S.D.; brother Leland "Shorty" Staab of Kimball; sisters Fabiola Hirschfeldt of Brush, Colo., Betty Christensen of Kimball and Ramona Allen of Bridgeport, Texas; 13 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Artie, Eldon and Eddie and two sisters, Esther and Dora Lee.
