Juanita Joan Howard

Juanita Joan Howard, 65, formerly of Dix, died Friday, Sept. 3, 1999, at her home in North Platte, Neb. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Sept. 7, 1999, at the Cantrell Funeral Home in Kimball with Pastor Virgil Johnson of the Dix Bible Church officiating. Burial was in Dix Rural cemetery.

She was born September 16, 1933 at Columbus, Neb. to Clarence and Fern Marie (McNair) Beierle. She graduated from Minden Mines High School in Missouri in 1951. She and William A. "Bill" Howard were married on April 1, 1951 at Bentonville, Ariz.

They lived in Wichita, Pittsburg and Junction City, Kan. They also lived in Albuquerque, N.M. before moving to Dix in 1961. She worked as a postal clerk in the Dix Post Office for 10 years. In 1991 she and Bill retired to a small acreage near North Platte.

She is survived by her husband of North Platte; three sons, Bill Howard and his wife Kathy of Riverton, Wyo., Garry Howard and his wife Lorrie of North Platte, and Bob Howard and his wife Ranae of Kearney, Neb.; a daughter Deb Linden of Pleasanton, Neb.; 12 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister Virginia McKinney.

The family has established a memorial in Juanita's memory to the Great Plains Hospice.

Odean Colonial Chapel of North Platte and Cantrell Funeral Home of Kimball were in charge of funeral arrangements.

Robert Gene Steele

Robert Gene Steele, 71, of Kimball, died Sept. 2, 1999 at Delta, Colo. Memorial Services were at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 7, at the First English Lutheran Church in Kimball with Pastor Dwayne Hunzeker officiating.

He was born April 28, 1928 in Banner County, Neb. to William and Blanche (Fitz) Steele. He lived in Banner and Kimball counties all of his life. He served in the armed services in Korea during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1952. He was a rancher and farmer. On Oct. 2, 1953, he married JoAnn Christensen.

He was a member of the First English Lutheran Church in Kimball and had served on the church board. He belonged to the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, had been a 4-H leader, served on the Dix Rural Fire Board and the Kimball-Banner County Rodeo Committee.

He is survived by his wife, four sons, Dick and Barbara Steele of Delta, Colo., Dan and Janet Steele and their children of Albany, Ore., David and Susan Steele and their children of Irving, Tex., and Daryl and Kerry Steele and their children of Kimball; three brothers, Maurice Steele of Kimball, Harold Steele of Potter, Neb. and Billy D. Steele of Sidney, Neb.; and one sister, Irene Wallin of Kimball.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Bernard, and one nephew, Ed Steele.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First English Lutheran Church, 501 S. Webster, Kimball.

Arrangements were made by Martin Mortuary in Grand Junction, Colo.

James L. "Sonny" Eatmon

James L. "Sonny" Eatmon, 71, of Kimball, died Saturday, August 28, 1999, at his home.

Funeral services were Wednesday, September 1 at the Kimball Event Center, with the Rev. Ed Newbury officiating, Masonic services were conducted by Kimball Lodge #294 A.F.&A.M. Burial was in Kimball cemetery.

He was born March 8, 1928, in Three Sands, Okla. to James Stanley and Margaret Jane (Levings) Eatmon. He attended school in Kansas. He served with the U.S. Marines in World War II from April 1945 to May 1947. In 1954, he moved to Kimball from Sterling, Colo. He and Mari Lou Asmus were married in Kimball.

He owned and operated Eatmon Well Service from 1956 until he retired in1991.

In his second term as a Kimball County Commissioner, he was serving as a chairman and as secretary-treasurer of the Nebraska Association of County Officials (N.A.C.O) Board of Directors.

He was very involved in the Masonic Order. He became a Master Mason in Kimball Lodge #294 in 1961 and served as Master of the Lodge in 1967. He was a member of numerous Masonic organizations and served in a number of capacities in the Grand Lodge of Nebraska. He was installed as Grand Master of Nebraska in 1992. He was a 33rd Degree Scottish Rite Mason and a member of the Oregon Trail Chapter #65, York Rite. He also was a member of Tehama Temple Shrine.

He was a member of St. Hilda's Episcopal Church; a member and past president of the Kimball Rotary Club; the Elks and Eagles. He had served as the Chairman of the Republican Finance Committee of Nebraska and was a past chairman of the Nebraska Oil and Gas Commission. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Omaha Home for Boys.

He is survived by his wife Mari Lou of Kimball; sons Randy Eatmon of Redding, Calif. and Mike Eatmon and his wife Denise of Earlville, Ill.; daughters Patty Watson and her husband Steve of Kimball, Liz Ferguson and her husband John of Kimball and Georgia Nelson of Kearney; 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, brother Jerry and grandson Andy Ferguson.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Kimball County Hospital, Kimball Masonic Lodge #294 or the Omaha Home for Boys.

Margaret Schemm

Margaret R. Schemm, 86, of Kimball, died Tuesday, August 24, 1999, at the Kimball County Manor. Funeral services were Friday, August 27 at St. John's Lutheran Church, with Pastor Tom Jacobsen officiating. Burial will be in Kimball cemetery.

She was born January 6, 1913, in Herrick, S.D. to Dick and Margaret (Rugge) Schmidt.

She married Leonard M. Schemm on September 17, 1930. They farmed in South Dakota until 1947 when they moved to Valentine, Neb. They moved to Bassett, Neb. in 1950 and then to Kimball in 1952. In the early 1960's they moved to Bushnell where she managed a grocery store from 1963 to 1970. She and her husband moved back to Kimball in 1970.

She was confirmed in the Lutheran Church in 1931. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Kimball; a member of St. John's Ladies Aid and an honorary member of L.W.M.L. (Lutheran Women’s Missionary League).

She is survived by a daughter, Barbara L. Martin of Cheyenne, Wyo.; sister Emma McKee of White River, S.D.; eight grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Leonard, her daughter Donna Janicek, her parents, two sisters and four brothers.

Memorial gifts may be made to St. John's Ladies Aid or St. John's Lutheran Church in Kimball.

Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Edmund J. Staab, Jr.

Edmund J. Staab, Jr., 45, of Kimball, died Wednesday, August 25, 1999, at United Medical Center in Cheyenne, Wyo.

Mass of Christian Burial was Saturday, August 28 at the Cantrell Funeral Home, with Father Francis Curran officiating. Burial was in Kimball cemetery. Recitation of the Rosary was Friday, August 27 at the Cantrell Funeral Home.

He was born March 27, 1954, to Edmund J. and Veronica (Gertner) Staab, Sr. in Kimball. He was a lifelong resident of Kimball and graduated from Kimball High School in 1973. At one time, he worked for Joe Rebein and Shorty Staab as a pumper’s assistant. He enjoyed fishing, crossword puzzles and painting ceramics.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by his mother Veronica of Kimball; brother Chad Shane Cosmas Staab of Kimball; sisters Sandra Weltz, of Potter, and Pamela J. Noram of Walnut Grove, Minn.; and seven nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father and his grandparents.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Edmund Staab, Jr. Memorial Fund.

Albert M. Sandberg

Albert M. Sandberg, 92, of Albin, Wyo., died Wednesday, August 25, 1999, at his home.

Funeral services were Saturday, August 28 at Schrader Chapel in Cheyenne, Wyo., with Minister Jim Brown officiating. Internment was at Albin cemetery.

He was born August 2, 1907, in Randolph, Neb. He was a farmer and rancher. He was a 52-year member of the Golden Prairie Baptist Church, serving formerly as treasurer.

His wife, Alice, preceded him in death in December 1990. He was also preceded in death by three brothers.

He is survived by daughters, Beverly Allen, of Albin, and Sandra Campbell and Eldora Lawson, both of Littleton, Colo.

Memorials may be made to Golden Prairie Baptist Church, 4996 County Road 226, Burns, Wyo. 82053.

D. Alida Fisher

Funeral services for D. Alida Fisher, 88, Scottsbluff, who died Saturday at her home, will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Jolliffe Funeral Home in Scottsbluff with the Rev. Vern Greenhalgh officiating.

Graveside services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Kimball cemetery in Kimball.

She was born to George Bennett "Ben’’ and Maude Ethel (Howe) Denson on Feb. 12, 1911 at Meadow Grove, Nebr. She taught school in Wyoming and Nebraska for 45 years before her retirement in 1976.

On June 1, 1957 she was married to Hiram "Hi’’ Fisher at Torrington, Wyo.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law: Shirley and Michael Post of Chesapeake, VA.. and Richardi and Frank Hagerman of Anaheim, Calif; one brother and sister-in-law: Richard and Lucille Denson of Broken Bow, Neb.

Amy Irene Larson

Amy Irene Larson, 96, of Sidney and a former Potter resident, died Wednesday, April 7, 1999, at the Sidney Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Funeral services were Saturday, April 10, in the First United Methodist Church in Sidney with the Rev. Gary Aten officiating. Burial was in the Potter cemetery.

She was born April 26, 1902, to Ira E. and Ella May (Overman) Willeford near Taylor Station in Pottawattamie County, Iowa. She attended rural schools until the family moved to Logan, Iowa, where she graduated from high school in 1921. In June of 1921, she joined her family on their ranch west of Peetz, Colo. On Nov. 5, 1923, she married Carl Larson in a double ceremony at Methodist parsonage in Sterling, Colo. The couple moved south of Potter where they lived until 1976 when they moved to Sidney. Her husband died Feb. 24, 1978.

Prior to being married , she taught school with her sister in their parents’ home. She was an active life-long member of the Potter United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday school, and was a member of the Women’s Society. While living in Sidney, she was active at the First United Methodist Church. She was also a charter member of the Jolly Neighbors Club and a past member of the D.U.V.

Survivors include her sons Calvin and his wife Dorothy of Potter and Boyde of Westminster, Colo.; daughters Amy Ann and her husband Henry Geu of Sidney; Joyce and her husband John Jensen of Lincoln; Merrill and her husband Ronald Alfs of Shickley, Neb. and Sherill and her husband Ivan Svoboda of Pender, Neb.; one brother; one sister; 21 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, step-mother, her husband, an infant daughter, one grandson, five brothers and three sisters.

Sarah Risher Grace

Former Kimball resident Sarah Risher Grace, 88, of Wharton, Texas, died Sunday April 11, 1999.

A memorial service was Wednesday, April 21 at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Kimball with the Rev. Jack Sample officiating. Cremation was held. A private family burial followed the memorial service.

She was born November 17, 1910, in Lumberton, Miss., to Horace and Mattie Howell Scott Risher. She graduated from Mississippi State College for Women with a bachelor's degree in English and did post-graduate work at the University of Wyoming.

She married Thomas Levi Grace on June 2, 1934, in Wisner, La.

She was a former resident of Louisiana and Colorado before moving to Kimball in 1949. She taught school in Wisner, La. and taught English at Kimball County High School. She later taught English and was a librarian in Dix until her retirement in 1976. She moved to Texas in 1991.

She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church of Kimball and a former member of the Kimball Garden Club.

She is survived by her daughter Pat Grace Joyce of Wharton, Texas; son, Tom Grace of Atlanta, Ga; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband on April 26, 1968.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church or donor’s choice.

Blanche Louise Meier

Blanche Louise Meier, 92, of Scottsbluff died March 31, 1999 at The Residency in Scottsbluff. She was a Kimball resident until 1992.

Funeral services were Monday at the Cantrell Funeral Home in Kimball with the Rev. Craig H. zumBrunnen officiating. Burial was at the Kimball cemetery.

Blanche was born June 19, 1906 in Currie, Minn., to Pete and Emma Denault Longtin. She lived in Currie and attended school there until her family moved to Broadwater, Neb., in 1920. Blanche Longtin and Henry Carl Meier were married on May 22, 1922 in Bridgeport.

In 1926 she and Henry moved to a farm three miles east of Kimball where they farmed for many years. Henry died in 1990. In 1992 Blanche moved to The Residency in Scottsbluff.

She was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Kimball for more than 50 years.

She is survived by her son, Raymond H. Meier of Scottsbluff and also by a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Henry, her parents, a sister and two brothers.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Kimball Presbyterian Church or The Residency in Scottsbluff.
