Harlan Haddix

Former Kimball County resident Harlan Haddix, 78, died March 25, at Greeley, Colo. He is the brother of Bernard Haddix of Kimball.

Funeral services were March 30 in Greeley.

He was born Sept. 27, 1920, at Mason City, Neb. to Winfield and Abbie May Fielding Haddix. He attended Mason City Public School. He moved to Bushnell with his family in 1939.

He entered the Army Sept. 5, 1942, and served with the 89th Infantry as a rifleman and the 88th Infantry in the African campaign. His experience included the Rome-Arno, North Apennines and P.O. Valley. After being wounded in battle in Italy, he was awarded the Purple Heart. He was discharged Oct. 29, 1945, and returned to the Kimball area, where he farmed with his brother Ernest until moving to Kersey, Colo. in 1948.

Survivors include his brother Bernard and wife Eunice of Kimball; sister Gladys Knispel of Kearney; and eight nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and an infant sister.

Rita Helen McNamee

Former Kimball resident Rita Helen McNamee, 66, of Pine Bluffs, Wyo., died Friday, March 26, 1999, at Mountain Towers Healthcare Center.

A vigil was held Tuesday, March 30, at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Pine Bluffs. Funeral services were Wednesday, March 31, at St. Paul’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Thomas Cronkleton and Rev. Ed Cortney as concelebrants. Interment was in the Pine Bluffs cemetery.

She was born Nov. 13, 1932. She married Stanley W. "Stan" McNamee Sept. 20, 1951, in Kimball. She lived in Pine Bluffs for 51 years.

She was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Pine Bluffs Past Time Club and Council of Catholic Women.

Survivors include her husband, Stanley W. "Stan" McNamee of Pine Bluffs; sons Jim of Burns, Wyo., Mark and Steve, both of Pine Bluffs, Jack of Miles City, Mont. and Michael of Torrington, Wyo.; daughters Kathleen Humphrey, Nancy McNamee and Susan Gross, all of Pine Bluffs, Denise Osborn of Cheyenne, Wyo. and Beth Churchill of Beatrice, Neb.; brothers Francis Cortney of Las Vegas, Nev. and Rev. Ed Cortney of Chadron, Neb.; sisters Nancy Cortney of Midland, Mich. and Rosaline Reinelt of Kingston, Mich.; and twenty-eight grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Hugh and Helen Cortney, and brother Ron Cortney.

Funeral arrangements were made by Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel of the Chimes.

Hilmer T. Nuss

Former Potter resident Hilmer T. Nuss, 78, of Nampa, Idaho, died Thursday, March 25, 1999, at his home.

He was born April 10, 1920, in Sutton, Neb., to Otto and Sophia (Griess) Nuss. He married Lorna Jung on May 4, 1947, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Potter. They lived and worked on a farm northeast of Potter and he also worked at the Sioux Ordinance Depot. In 1959, the family moved to Nampa, Idaho.

Funeral services were Tuesday, March 30, 1999, at Zion Lutheran Church in Nampa with the Rev. Michael Schumacher officiating. Burial was at Meridian cemetery.

He is survived by his wife Lorna of Nampa; four children; two brothers and one sister; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and four infant brothers.

Ricky D. Thomas

Ricky D. Thomas, 48, of Chicopee Mass., died March 29, 1999, at his home in Chicopee. He is the brother of Barbara Swayze of Kimball.

Funeral services were private, with Alternative Funeral Service of Springfield, Mass. in charge of arrangements.

He was born in Scottsbluff and graduated from Scottsbluff High School. He has lived in Chicopee since 1987. He was a energy auditor in the housing department field. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in the Vietnam era.

He is survived by his wife Gail (Oprisko) Voyles of Chicopee; one daughter; three brothers and three sisters.

Robert A. Wistrom

Robert A. Wistrom, age 68 of Dix, Nebraska died on Sunday, March 28, 1999 at his home. He was born in Dix, Nebraska on July 24, 1930 a son of W. L. and Beulah (Needham) Wistrom. Mr. Wistrom was a life long resident of Dix and attended Dix schools. He and Ardys Olsen were married on September 24, 1950. Over the years Robert had careers in auto bodywork, farming and contract pumping of oil wells. He retired in 1995. He had enjoyed spending his retirement time with his children and grandchildren.

Robert had volunteered for the Dix Volunteer Fire Department and had also been a member of the Town Board for many years.

He is survived by his wife Ardys of Dix, three sons Tim Wistrom and his wife Kathy of Kimball, NE, Steve Wistrom of Cheyenne, WY, and Bob Wistrom and his wife Mary of Sidney, NE, daughter Sonya Geuke and her husband Brad of Windsor, CO. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Cassie Wistrom, Jeremiah Wistrom, Anna Wistrom, Austin Geuke, Noelle and Madalyn Geuke and Josh and Sheena Straub. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Richard Wistrom and sister Virginia Stormberg.

A funeral service will be held Thursday, April 1st at 10:00 a.m. at the Cantrell Funeral Home in Kimball. The Rev. Virgil Johnson of Dix Bible Church will officiate. Interment will follow at Dix Rural cemetery, Dix, Nebraska. Visitation will be at the Cantrell Funeral Home, Kimball, NE from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday and from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Robert A. Wistrom Memorial Fund in care of the Cantrell Funeral Home.

Tom Fumio Abe

Tom Fumio Abe, 71, tof Lingle, Wyo. died Sat., March 13, 1999, at the Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. He is the grandfather of Callie Abe and Tacha Fornstrom, both of Pine Bluffs, Wyo.

Memorial services were held March 19 at the Jolliffe Funeral Home in Scottsbluff, with the Rev. Kanya Okamoto officiating. Cremation was held at Sunset Memorial Park in Scottsbluff.

A memorial has been established to the family.

Charles Stewart

Charles Kenneth "Speck" Stewart, 77, of Oshkosh died Fri., March 19, 1999, at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. He is the father of Phyllis Brown and Patricia Stewart of Pine Bluffs, Wyo.

Funeral services were Mon., March 22, 1999, at the Holechek Funeral Home in Oshkosh with the Reverend Joy Savage officiating. A private committal service will be held at a later date.

Memorial donations can be made to a charity of choice.

Survivors include his daughters Patricia Stewart, and Phyllis Brown and son-in-law, all of Pine Bluffs; son Gerald of Scottsbluff; grandson Richard Brown of Bushnell; four sisters and one brother.

Leona Irene Tomich

Leona Irene Tomich, 86, of Bushnell, died on Friday, March 19, 1999, at Kimball County Hospital. Funeral services will be Thurs., March 25, at 10:30 a.m. at the Cantrell Funeral Home of Kimball with the Rev. Jack E. Sample officiating. Interment will be in the Kimball cemetery.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Kimball Manor Assisted Living Fund.

She was born in Kimball on Dec. 11, 1912, to James H. and Mary L. (Allison) Louthan. After graduating from Kimball County High School in 1930, she attended the University of Nebraska and taught school in Kimball County for nine years. On Oct. 29, 1939, she married Bernard Tomich. They made their home north of Bushnell, later moving to a farm two miles east of Bushnell. After her husband’s death in November of 1989, she continued to live on the farm.

She was a member of the Calvary United Methodist Church of Bushnell, the Golden Sheaf Rebekah Lodge for 63 years and the Moonbeam Extension Club. She served on the Co-op Food Store Board, taught Sunday school, and was a 4-H leader for many years.

She is survived by sons Ken of Dacono, Colo., Doug and his wife Merry Ann of Bushnell daughters Kathy Scales of Kimball, and Nancy Gregor and her husband Alex of Austin, Texas; sisters Elsie Kelly of Vista, Calif., Alma Bunyard of Lee's Summit, Miss., and Marilyn Ashby of Gulfport, Miss.; two grandsons and one great granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her husband, four brothers and four sisters.

Walter P. Thummel

Walter P. Thummel, 80, of Kimball, died on Wed., March 10, 1999, while vacationing in Arizona. A Recitation of the Rosary was held on Sun., March 14 at 7 p.m. at the Cantrell Funeral Home in Kimball. Mass of Christian Burial were held at Monday, March 15, 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Kimball with Rev. Francis Curran officiating. Burial will follow in the Kimball cemetery.

He was born on June 26, 1918, at Plainville, Kan. to Vincent and Elizabeth (Hake) Thummel. He moved from Kansas to Kimball in 1939. On June 12, 1948, he married Dorothy Siebenaler in Kimball. They farmed northwest of town for many years. Although semi-retired, he always kept up his interest of farming and agriculture.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church of Kimball and the Knights of Columbus. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and had served in the Army Medical Corps during World War II. He was an Honorary Chapter Farmer of the FFA. In 1990, he was named a recipient of the Nebraska Outstanding Tree Planter award. During the latter years of his life he had planted and cared for over 20, 000 trees.

Survivors include his wife Dorothy of Kimball; sons Duane of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Dale and Allen, both of Kimball, Bruce of Lincoln, and Greg Thummel of Phoenix, Ariz.; daughters Mary and husband Jim Coon of Bayard, Neb., Donna and husband Dan McMasters of Columbus, Ohio, Peggy and husband Darold Spradlin of Cozad, Neb., Shirley Thummel of Sidney, Neb., Theresa and husband Bob Eisinger of Denver, Colo., and Alice and husband Ken Lauer of North Platte, Neb.; brothers Jerry Thummel of Boise, Idaho and Fred Thummel of Midland, Texas; sisters Eleanor Thummel and Angeline Schmitz both of Beloit, Kan., Leona Pair of Sugar Creek, Mo., and Connie Tande of Austin, Texas; and 12 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Memorial gifts may be made to St. Joseph's Church Renovation Project.

Lyle Wayne Evertson

Lyle Wayne Evertson, 69, of Lake Havasu City, died March 1, 1999, at Havasu Regional Medical Center.

Services were March 3 at Lietz-Fraze Chapel.

Arrangements were made by Lietz-Fraze Funeral Home.

He was born Aug. 9, 1929, in Kimball. A member of the Elks Lodge, he was a self-employed rancher/farmer in Kimball for 35 years. Lake Havasu City was his home for 30 years.

Survivors include son Bruce Evertson of Kimball; daughters Teresa D. Green of Lake Havasu City and Dianne Davega of Tustin, Calif; sisters Ferne Johnson of Gering and Helen Wheeler of Potter; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Zelda Nelson

Zelda R. Nelson, 99, of Omaha, died March 2, 1999 at Omaha. Funeral services were Monday at Lincoln. She was born near Bennet, Neb., Sept. 15, 1899. She taught in Kimball early in her career after graduating from Bennet High School about 1915.

Hubert C. Trumbull

Former Banner County resident Hubert C. Trumbull, 77, of Morrill, died Feb. 23, 1999, at PresbyterianSt. Luke’s Hospital in Denver. He is the brother of Pearl Cleveland of Kimball.

Memorial services were Sat., Feb. 27 at Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel in Morill, with the Rev. Tom Hunter officiating. Inurnment was at the Forest Lawn cemetery in Morrill.

He was born Nov. 24, 1921, in Banner County to Lewis and Della Trumbull. He grew up and received his education in Banner county and Kimball County schools. He farmed with his father until he entered the Air Force during World War II. Upon his honorable discharge in 1943, he married Doris Pheiffer Nov. 13 in Atwood, Kan. He farmed in Banner County until 1958 when the family moved to a farm north of Morrill. In 1976, they moved to Morrill, where he was Park Superintendent for the City of Morrill until his retirement in 1993.

He was a member of the American Legion Post in Morrill and a Pythian Brother.

He is survived by his wife Doris; daughter and son-in-law Joyce and Lloyd Hinze of Gering, sister and brother-in-law Pearl and Richard Cleveland of Kimball; four grandchildren; and five great-grandsons.

He was preceded in death by his son Gary, parents, two brothers and three sisters.

Memorials may be give to the American Heart Association or to the Nebraska Children’s Home.

Rose Mary Metz Debus

Rose Mary Metz Debus, 80, of Mitchell, died Friday, Feb. 26, 1999, at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. She is the mother of Kathleen Snyder of Kimball.

Funeral services were Monday, March 1, at the Federated Churches in Mitchell, with the Rev. Stephen Chapman officiating. Burial was in the Mitchell cemetery.

She was born Feb. 23, 1919, in Petersburg, Neb. She moved with her family to Morrill as an infant and attended school in Torrington, Wyo. until moving to the Liberty School area. She married Henry Debus Jr. on March 17, 1936. They farmed in the Mitchell Valley for years. She did painting and papering and worked for Great Western Sugar Company until her retirement.

She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law Kathleen and Val Deane Snyder of Kimball, Norma and Doug Allen of Loveland, Colo., sons and daughters-in-law Gary and Joann of Greeley, Colo., Dennis and Shirley of Torrington, Brad and Rama, Kent and Bobbi, all of Mitchell; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sisters Bea Munroe of Torrington and Betty Hort of rural Lyman; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother and her husband.

Memorials are to the family.

Holger F. Gram

Long-time Kimball resident Holger Gram, 97, died at the Kimball Manor, Sat., Feb. 27, 1999. Funeral services were Wed., March 3 at the Presbyterian Church in Kimball with the Rev. Craig zumBrunnen officiating. Burial was in Kimball cemetery.

He was born Oct. 28, 1901, at Hormested, Denmark to Marius and Engel (Pries) Gram-Mikkelsen. His early years were spent on the farm. He was confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Denmark at 14. He was then ready to go out and work. He worked mostly in creameries. He attended dairy school.

At the invitation of a friend and a promise of a job at Sorensen's creamery, he decided to come to America, landing in New York in July 28.1928. In 1934, he decided to become a farmer and rented a farm northeast of Kimball. On Dec. 20, 1939, he married Lula Ross. They lived on their farm until they moved to Kimball in 1994. He moved to the Kimball County Manor on Feb. 24, 1999.

He was a member of Presbyterian Church of Kimball. He had served as both trustee and elder.

He is survived by his wife, Lula; two sons and daughters-in-law Dan and Dianne Gram of Vermont, Gordon and Carmen Gram of Grand Junction, Colo; one daughter Bonnie and son-in-law Al Kovatch of Denver; three grandchildren; two step granddaughters; two great granddaughters M and two step great grandsons.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and three brothers .

Memorials may be donated to the Presbyterian Church of Kimball or to the Kimball County Manor.
