Kenneth E. Heidemann

Kenneth E. Heidemann, 70, of Kimball, died Saturday, Nov. 7, 1998, at the VA Medical Center in Cheyenne, Wyo.

Cremation has taken place at Cheyenne Memorial Gardens under the direction of Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel of the Chimes. Memorial services are pending.

He was born March 23, 1928 in Wilcox, Neb. and moved to Kimball with his family when he was three years old. He was a welder and a member of the American Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife, Angela Heidemann of Kimball; brother and sister-in-law, Merlyn and Carolyn Heidemann of Potter; sister and brother-in-law, Orleatha and Lester Onigkeit of Kimball; four sons and two daughters-in-law, Phillip A. Heidemann of Loveland, Colo., Duane R. Heidemann of Seattle, Wash., John S. and Pamela Heidemann of Kimball and Kenneth L. and Sara Heidemann of Puyallup, Wash. and granddaughters Erin, Emily and Abby Heidemann of Kimball.

He was preceded in death by his parents, August and Lula Heidemann.

Memorials can be given to donor’s choice or the Kimball Little League program

Elmer B. Wilkening

Elmer B. Wilkening, 78, of Bushnell, died Sunday, Nov. 8, 1998, in the Kimball County Hospital. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Nov. 11, 1998, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Kimball with the Rev. Thomas Jacobsen officiating. Burial was in the Dix Rural cemetery.

He was born Nov. 3, 1920, at Deshler, Neb. to William and Marie (Stolnow) Wilkening.

He attended public schools at Deshler before joining the Armed Forces. He served in the United States Army during World War II. On Sept. 19, 1945, he married Doris Schreinert. After the service, he worked in the oil fields for a number of years until they moved to Dix where he worked at the Co-op Elevator. They later moved to Bushnell where he became the manager of the Pillsbury Company Elevator until his retirement about 15 years ago.

He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and a life member of the Veteran's of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include his wife, Doris Wilkening of Bushnell; daughter, Bonnie Miles of Douglas, Wyo; granddaughter, Marci Miles of Douglas; sisters, Lucy Mitchell of Eugene, Ore. and Lenora Eberhardt of Ogallala, Neb.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and a sister.

The Elmer Wilkening Memorial Fund has been established.

Robert Herbel

Robert Herbel, 76, of Sylmar, Calif., died on Oct. 28, 1998 in a convalescent home. Cremation was performed.

He was born Jan. 27, 1922, in Lincolnville, Kan. to David and Mollie (Schwemmer) Herbel. He attended school in Kansas. As a young man, he moved to western Nebraska with his family. He lived in the area until World War II. On Sept. 8, 1942, he was drafted into the armed forces. He served overseas in Australia, New Guinea, the Philippines and Japan. He received an honorable discharge on Nov. 30, 1945. He married Helen Schwartzkoph in Harrisburg, Neb. on July 12, 1947.

He is survived by his son Robert; daughters Carol, Tina, and Nanette; brothers Melvin of Gering, Neb., Raymond of Ogallala, Neb. and David of Wichita Falls, Tex.; sisters Helen Mitchell of California, Irene Kreutzman of Kansas, Roberta Rein of Mtchell and Esther Bastron of Scottsbluff; five grandchildren; many brothers and sisters-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, brothers Alex, Rudolph, Edwin, LuVerne and Reinhardt; sisters Mollie Dienes, Emma Deines, Mary Herbel and Lydia Haas

Lynda Rose

Former Potter resident Lynda Rose, 60, of Pleasanton, Calif., died after a sudden illness at Mt. Diablo Medical Center in Concord, Calif. on Friday, Nov., 6, 1998.

A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Potter Methodist Church. Graham-Hitch Mortuary of Pleasanton is in charge of arrangements.

She was a native of Potter, graduating from Potter High School and Nebraska Weslyn University in Lincoln. She lived in Pleasanton for the last 14 years and spent the last seven years working as a loan officer for GMAC.

She is survived by her mother Thelma Rose of Potter, sister Connie Winkelman and husband Don of Dalton; nieces Lori Wolff and husband Greg, Colleen McKay and husband Patrick and Donna Juelfs and husband Lane, all of western Nebraska; seven great-nieces and nephews; and her special friend Nancy Snover of Pleasanton.

She was preceded in death by her father Kenneth Rose and great-nephew Brennan Wolff.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Potter Methodist Church.

John F. McCoy

John F. McCoy, 64, Platteville, Colo. died Oct. 28, 1998 at North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley. He was born July 26, 1934 in Lost Springs, Kan. to Alma Burdett and James McCoy. He married Connie Estandley Sept. 9, 1957 in Miami, Okla.

He graduated from Lost Springs High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954-1956 in Germany as a Corporal. He worked most of his life around oil rigs. He was part owner of C.L.S. Anchors.

He is survived by his wife, Connie of Platteville; sons James McCoy of Evans, Colo. and Steven McCoy of California; mother, Alma McCoy of Hillsboro, Kan.; sisters, Marilyn Baker of Bakersfield, Calif. and Marcia Welsh of Hillsboro, Kan. and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father.

No services are scheduled, cremation. Memorials may be made to the Cancer Association c/o Stoddard Funeral Home.

Harry L. Shepard

Harry L. Shepard, 78, of Tucson, Ariz. died Wednesday, Nov. 4 in Tucson, Ariz. Funeral services were Wednesday, Nov. 11 at Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel of the Chimes with Pastor John Petty officiating. Interment was at Kimball cemetery in Kimball with Military honors provided by the VFW #2234.

He was born June 15, 1920, in Bushnell and had maintained a Wyoming residency in Cheyenne, Green River and Casper since 1958.

He served in the European Military Operations in the United States Air Force from 1942-1946. He and his wife Ruth were married Oct. 22, 1961 in Cheyenne. He was a retired millwright with 30 years of service in Local #2834 in Thorton, Colo. and a member of VFW Post #9439 in Casper, Wyo. and the Eagles in Green River, Wyo.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Shepard of Tucson; five sons, Dennis Shepard of Saudi Arabia, Roy D. Shepard of Tucson, Steven P. Shepard of Aurora, Colo., Keith E. Shepard of Willington, Nev. and Harry A. Stahla of Denver; three daughters, Roxanne Rose of Denver, Marilyn C. Stevens of Westminster, Calif. and Barbara A. Clark of Tustin, Calif.; three brothers, Richard Shepard of Oklahoma, Ray Shepard of Lander, Wyo. and Willard Shepard of Wheatland, Wyo.; a sister, Doris Sumner of Cheyenne; 18 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Alma Shepard; two brothers, Ralph Shepard and Cecil Shepard and a grandson, Matthew.

Memorials may be made to Hospice or the American Cancer Society.

Wayne Schrack

Wayne Schrack, 85, of Lexington, Neb., died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998, at the Tri-County Hospital in Lexington. He is the brother-in-law of Edna Schrack of Kimball.

Funeral services were Friday, Oct. 30 at the First Christian Church in Lexington with Pastor Tom Reynolds officiating. Burial, with military rites, was in the Greenwood cemetery. Reynolds-Love Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He was born on Dec. 1, 1912, in Gosper County, Neb. to Roy and Francis (Lucas) Schrack. He graduated from Lexington High School in 1931 and then served in the Army during World War II. On June 23, 1944, he married Betty (Thomas) at North Platte, Neb. The couple farmed near Kimball.

He was a member of the VFW, American Legion and the First Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife; daughter and son-in-law SueAnn and Ray Wilson of Kearney, Neb.; one granddaughter Kelly and Monte DeWeese of Kearney; two great-grandsons Greg and Chris DeWeese of Kearney; one brother and sister-in-law Donald Dean Sr. and Rose Mary of Tama, Iowa; one sister Wyona Pape of Omaha; two sisters-in-law Edna Schrack of Kimball and Lelah Schrack of Lexington and seven nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.

Memorials are to the First Christian Church or the Lexington Volunteer Fire Department.

Lois Fern McCann

Lois Fern McCann, 89, died Oct. 26, 1998 at Arapahoe, Neb. She was born Oct. 3, 1909 at Pine Bluffs, Wyo., to Orvice and Emma (Wilson) Brawner. She lived in Kimball from about 1916 until about 1929, and graduated from Kimball County High School in 1927.

She married Howard McCann in 1929. They lived at Edison, Neb., and later at Arapahoe.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, a grandson, and sisters Bessie Mae, Pearl (Mrs. Floyd) Anderson, and Beulah (Mrs. Deroy) Anderson. Survivors include daughter Shirley (McCann) Griesbach, sons Brad and Doug, brother Murray Brawner, sister Berniece Hindmarsh, 10 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.

Burial was at Edison cemetery.

Mark A. Rogers

Mark A. Rogers, 73, died Oct. 30, 1998 at his home in Banner County. Funeral services were held Monday at Calvary Memorial Evangelical Free Church in Gering with Pastor Charlie Hornick officiating. Burial was at the Kirk cemetery.

He was born Oct. 8, 1925 in Cherokee, Iowa to Joseph and Ruby Rogers. He graduated from Gering High School. He served two and a half years in the Air Force as radio operator/gunman on B-17’s and B-29’s, where he attained the rank of sergeant. He attended Chadron State College and graduated from the University of Nebraska-Omaha with a bachelor of science degree and from Creighton University with a masters of science degree in microbiology.

He married Winnie I. Huffman on Aug. 27, 1950. He farmed in Banner County until early retirement in 1979, because of Huntington’s Chorea Disease. He was a member of the American Legion, served on the ASCS Committee, Banner County School Board and served 10 years on the Educational Service Unit 13 board.

He is survived by his wife, Winnie of Banner County; daughter and son-in-law, Ruth and Royce Ammon of Shakopee, Minn.; daughter-in-law, Julie Rogers of Banner County; grandchildren, Nathan and Sean Rogers of Banner County; brother and sister-in-law, Blair and Betty Rogers of Mitchell; brother, Jay Rogers of Scottsbluff; sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Bob Spurgeon of Scottsbluff and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Joffre and son, Michael.

Gering Memorial Chapter was in charge of arrangments.

Memorials may be given to Camp Rock or the Huntington’s Disease Society of America.

William ‘Tom’ Jefferson

William T. "Tom’’ Jefferson, 72, died Oct. 30, 1998, at his home in Wheatland, Wyo.

Funeral Liturgy was Monday morning at Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church in Wheatland, with Father Jan Santich as Celebrant. Burial was in the Wheatland cemetery with military graveside rites by the Laramie Peak Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3558.

He was born Jan. 22, 1926, in Bushnell, the son of George and Gertrude (Batterton) Jefferson. He was reared and educated in the Bushnell-Kimball area; graduating from Kimball County High School in 1946. He served in the Merchant Marines from 1943-45. Following graduation from high school, he entered the Air Force; retiring in 1965. After his retirement, he lived in Cheyenne, Wyo., Ohio and moved to Wheatland in 1990. He was a member of the Moose Lodge and enjoyed fishing and hunting.

He is survived by four children, Cindy Dolan of Cheyenne, Tom Jefferson of Wheatland, Tim Jefferson of Cheyenne and CeCe Jefferson of Cheyenne; and eight grandchildren: Justin, Kristen and Brian Dolan, Whitney, A.J. and Sara Jefferson, and Courtney and Alex Jefferson. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Jeanne Jefferson on Sept. 4, 1998; and a brother, Phil Jefferson.

Memorials have been established to Platte County Home Health Care, 201 14th Street, Wheatland, WY 82201.

Platte Funeral Chapel of Wheatland was in charge of the arrangements.

John Lester Novotny

John Lester Novotny, 78, died Sunday, Nov. 1, 1998, in the Kimball County Manor. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Nov. 4, 1998, at Cantrell Funeral Home with Pastor Virgil Johnson officiating. Burial was in the Kimball cemetery.

He was born May 9, 1920, at Ord, Neb. to John W. and Mary (Skolil) Novotny. His family moved to Kimball County in 1925. He was raised and attended a rural school in the Czech community of the South Divide. In 1939, he married Velva Imes. The couple lived in Cheyenne, Wyo. for a while and then Long Beach, Calif. where he worked for Douglas Aircraft on war planes. They returned to Kimball County and raised their five children. He was a well-known Studebaker and used car dealer. His love for the grain harvest kept him on the custom harvest route for many years. John loved to polka and attended Czech festivals all over the Nebraska Panhandle. He made his home at the Kimball County Manor for the past three and a half years.

He was a long-time member of the Dix Lions Club, the Dix Volunteer Fire Department, the Elks Lodge and the Eagles Aerie #3889 at Kimball.

Survivors include his sons and daughters-in-law, Lonnie and Joyce Novotny of Ft. Collins, Colo. and John and Colleen Novotny of Albuquerque, N.M.; daughters and sons-in-law, Janette and Dave Ukasick of Florence, Ariz. and Nanci and Gary McCaslin of Potter; brothers and sisters-in-law, Bill and Esther Novotny and Richard and Carol Novotny, all of Kimball, and Ron and Mary Novotny of Sun City, Ariz.; sisters and brother-in-law, Lillian Locke of Tulsa, Okla. and Alice and Ed Chamberlain of Waco, Texas; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Val; and his son, Monty.

Memorials may be made to the Nebraska Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association or to the John Novotny Memorial Fund.

Robert E. Sumner

Robert E. Sumner, 84, of Kimball, died Thursday, Oct. 22, 1998, at the Kimball County Manor. Funeral services were held Monday, Oct. 26, 1998, at the Kimball County Manor Chapel with cremation following. Rev. Jack Sample officiated.

He was born June 5, 1914, at Elkhorn, Neb. to James and Liz (Weeks) Sumner. He grew up and graduated from Kimball County High School. He then farmed with his family and later on his own. On Dec. 27, 1938, he married J. Frances Selover in Denver, Colo. They moved to Hemingford, Neb. in 1946, where they owned and operated a Gamble's Store. In 1950, they moved to Scottsbluff, where he was self-employed. They later lived in Sidney, North Platte, and Denver, returning to Kimball in 1976.

He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church at Kimball and the Kimball Friendship Senior Center, where he served as president and help with the relocation to their present building.

Survivors include his wife, Frances of Kimball; son and daughter-in-law, Edward and Linda Sumner of Denver, Colo.; daughters and sons-in-law, Janet and Fred Gerhardt of Kingston, Mich. and Judy and Dan Gudahl of Colorado Springs, Colo.; brother, Owen Sumner of California; sister, Dee Barba of Montana; grandchildren, Robert, Dena, Rob, Brian, Karen, Alice, Sarah, Kristian and Jenille; and ten great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; three sisters; and a grandson, Aaron.

A memorial has been established to the Kimball Friendship Senior Center.
