Mitsu Nakatsu, 85

(May 16) ALLIANCE - Mitsu Nakatsu, 85, died Tuesday, May 13, 2003, at Box Butte General Hospital. She was born to Minosuke and Shige (Kato) Nagaki on Sep. 28, 1917, at Bayard.

She graduated from Minatare High School, and attended school in Japan for two years following graduation. On March 24, 1943, she was married to Harry Nakatsu at the Mitchell Methodist Church. They moved to Alliance in 1947. He preceded her in death in November 2001. She was a homemaker for most of her life, but was employed at J.C. Penney's from 1966 to 1978. Her activities included 4-H leader, Friendly Circle member and serving on the election board. She is survived by one daughter, Susan Wilson of Sidney; granddaughters Sabrina and Beth Wilson of Lincoln; and son-in-law, Jeff Calvin of Kearney. She also is survived by brothers Akira, Tad, Frank (Mary) and Ma (Alice) Nagaki of Alliance; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a daughter Patty Calvin; granddaughters, Kimberly and Megan Calvin; parents; and son-in-law, Dean Wilson Jr.

Mrs. Nakatsu's funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday, May 19, at Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel at Scottsbluff, with Rev. Kanya Okamoto officiating. Burial will be at the Fairview Cemetery at Scottsbluff. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 17, and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 18. Memorials may be sent to the donor's choice.

Bessie J. Cogdill, 97

(May 19) CHADRON - Bessie J. Cogdill, 97, died Thursday, May 17, at Crest View Care Center. She was born May 18, 1905, at Terre Haute, Ind. Her parents were Bert and Orah Litfick.

She was married to Don Cogdill. He preceded her in death. She was a member of RSVP, Eastern Star Does, Rebba Kkals and Diar University Women.

Mrs. Cogdill's funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday, May 21, at Gordon Cemetery, with Pastor Rodney Long officiating. Chamberlain Chapel of Chadron is in charge of arrangements.

Boyd Jones, 93

(May 19) HYANNIS - Boyd Jones, 93, longtime resident of Hyannis, died Friday, May 16, 2003, at Moore, Okla. He was born June 10, 1910. His survivors include Marie Jones of Alliance. Mr. Jones' funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 21, at United Church of Christ in Hyannis.

Troy C. Hunter, 35

(May 19) ALLIANCE - Troy Collins Hunter, 35, went to be with the Lord on Friday, May 16, 2003, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family and friends at his passing. He was born April 19, 1968, at Alliance, to Deborah Ann Hunter and Dave Collins.

Troy received his education in the Hemingford School System, but graduated from high school at Cactus Shadows in Arizona in 1986. He attended college at Eastern Wyoming College and taught computers at Phoenix, Ariz. While living in Arizona, Troy fell in love with Amy Lee Higley, they were married June 3, 1989, at Scottsdale. After moving back to the Panhandle, Troy went to work for Diamond Hill Farms where he was a loyal employee until the time of his death. He was a member of the Alliance Berean Church and was a Past President of the National Little Britches Rodeo. Troy enjoyed rodeo, mechanics, inventing, water skiing, fishing, and hunting. Troy's greatest joy was his wife Amy, and three boys, Wyatt 8, Tristan 6, and Karsen 3. Troy was greatly loved and respected by those he came in contact with. He will be greatly missed. Troy is survived by his wife Amy; and sons, Wyatt, Tristan, and Karsen, all of Alliance He also is survived by parents, Dave and Jacoba Collins of Lake May, Fla., and Deborah Hunter of Phoenix, Ariz.; mother- and father-in-law, Barbara and Steve Offenbacher of Phoenix, Ariz.; father-in-law, Gordon Higley of Las Vegas, Nev.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Karleen and Tim Uher of Wilbur, and Julie and Scott Fegler of Lyman; cousins, Travis Hunter and his wife Michelle, and Michael Collins and his wife Chris, all of Alliance; sisters, Monique Collins of Yorktown, Va., and Felicia Collins of Lake May, Fla.; brother, Anush Collins of the USAF in Kuwait; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Jack and Joan Hunter, James and Oda Collins, and his good friend, Kelly Kiester. Troy wanted to acknowledge the effect and influence Jack and Barb Nielsen had on his life and family. He wants Jason Swanson, Michael Collins, and Travis Hunter to know that they were really his brothers, and that is how he loved them. Troy also wanted to make known his great thanks and love for Jesus Christ, his Lord and Savior.

Mr. Hunter's funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 20, at the United Methodist Church at Alliance, with Pastor Hod Boltjes and Tim Eyrich officiating. Burial will be in the Hemingford Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials for his children's college fund may be sent to, Community First National Bank, Attention Pam Brown, P.O. Drawer A, Alliance, NE 69301. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dan I. Ainslie, 93

(May 20) ALLIANCE - Dan Irven Ainslie, 93, died Sunday, May 18, 2003, at Box Butte General Hospital. He was born August 9, 1909, at Moscow, Latah County, Idaho, to Philemon and Mary Ainslie.

Shortly after he was born the family moved to the Gothenburg area, where he grew up on farms and ranches at Gothenburg, Nenzel and Cody, Neb., and Wamblee, S.D. He attended school when ever possible, however, young kids were needed to work to help support the family. Dan worked at all sorts of farm and ranch jobs, meat cutter, a cow puncher, broke horses to ride, shepherding and he also worked at the Halsey Sub-Station planting trees for the forest service. On his 30th birthday, Aug. 9, 1939, Dan married Elaine Christoffersen. The couple eloped to Alliance where a Judge married them with Dan's sister and husband, Mary and Paul Laue as witnesses. The couple lived with Dan's parents north of Hay Springs for a brief period, before moving to the Christoffersen home place where they would spend the next 31 years farming. On June 25, 1940, the couple's only child, Leon Dan Ainslie, was born. In 1970 Dan sold the home place and worked as a farm laborer living at the Niesen, Gibson, and Andreasen places for the next 20 years. In 1988 they moved five miles east of Alliance where they would live for 13 years where he worked as a handyman and lawn care service. His parents, six brothers and four sisters preceded him in death. His survivors include his wife Elaine; son and wife, Leon and Deonna Ainslie of Arvada, Colo.; three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, LaDona, James, Shara, Evan, April and Tristen Souther, DaNaye, Bradley, Courtney, Lindsay and Corbin Gettel, and Danyl Ainslie. His sister Mary Laue of Chadron also survives him as well and numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 22, at the Bates-Gould Chapel, with the Rev. Don Mink officiating. Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, May 23, at the Hay Springs Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Senior Services Center, 212 Yellowstone, Alliance, NE 69301. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Anna M. Hashman, 97

(May 21) ALLIANCE - Anna M. Hashman, 97, died Friday, May 18, 2001 at her home in Alliance. She was born February 28, 1904 in Delmont, S. D. to Fredrick and Elizabeth (Schied) Schwaderer.

On February 8, 1924 she married Lester Hashman in Hot Springs, S. D. She and her husband farmed west of Alliance for many years and she moved into Alliance in 1991. Her survivors are her daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Gene Walker of Alliance, daughter-in-law, Lucille Hashman of Alliance, 10 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, son Robert, 14 brothers and sisters and one granddaughter. She was a member of St. John's United Lutheran Church.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Tuesday, May 22, 2001, at St. John's United Lutheran Church. The Reverend Paul Mottl will officiate. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to St. John's Lutheran Church or the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Kermit G. Duis, 59

(May 21) ASHBY - Kermit G. Duis, 59, of Ashby died Thursday, May 17, 2001, at Alliance following a horse accident. He was born May 27, 1941 at Gothenburg. His parents were George and Leona (Sommers) Duis.

He graduated from Gothenburg High School in 1961. He worked for the Pawnee Springs Ranch for 16 years. He married Jon Morris Oct. 19, 1986 at Gothenburg. They moved to the Joe Minor Ranch about seven years ago. He was a member of the Nebraska Cattleman's Association. He is survived by his wife Jon of the home; one son Michael at home; one dayghter Sheila Lum of North Platte; two grandchildren; and two brothers.

Mr. Duis' funeral will be at 2 p.m., Monday, May 21, at the Calvary Episcopal Church at Hyannis, with the Rev. Paul Mottl officiating. His graveside service will be at 10 a.m. CDT, Tuesday, May 22 at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery north of Gothenburg, with the Rev. Larry Viter officiating. Mullen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jesse D. Anthony, 20

(May 22) CHADRON - Jesse Dylan Anthony, 20, died Sunday, May 20, 2001, at Chadron Hospital. He was born August 21, 1980 at Chadron. His parents are Rick Anthony and Barb Anthony.

He is survived by his parents; grandparents, Dave and Doris Anthony and Clarence Madsen of Chadron; and three sisters, Colette Fernandez, Ricci Anthony and Kaly Anthony all of Chadron.

Mr. Anthony's funeral will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday, May 23, at Chamberlain Chapel, with Pastor Allan Schmidt officiating. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery. A memorial has been established for the Chadron Volunteer Rescue Unit. Donations may be sent to Chamberlain Chapel, P.O. Box 970, Chadron, NE 69337. Chamberlain Chapel of Chadron is in charge of arrangements.

Robert F. Wefso, 74

(May 22) MONTEREY, Calif. - Robert F. Wefso, 74, died Feb. 9, 2001, at Monterey, Calif. He was born March 28, 1926, at Chadron. His parents were Robert S. and May E. (Conn) Wefso.

He attended St. Mary's Catholic elementary school and graduated form Rushville High School in 1943. He attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln for one year, before entering the U.S. Army Air Force. Upon discharge, he returned to UNL and earned a B.A. in Business Administration, majoring in Accounting. He was married to Janice of Pebble Beach, Calif. Mrs. Wefso preceded him in death. He worked for several large firms before opening a C.P.A. practice in Monterey in the late 1950s, retiring this past January. He was a life member of American Legion Post No. 161, Kiwanis, Elks, UNL Alumni Association and Alpha Tau Omega fraternity.

He is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth Christian of Oakland, Calif. He also is survived by his brother, Fritz Wefso of Rushville, and his sister Bette Hagel of Jacksonville, Fla.

Mr. Wefso's memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, May 25, at Chamberlain Mortuary in Rushville, with military services provided by the Veterans Honor Guard. Inurnment will be in Fairview Cemetery at Rushville. Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Central Coast, P.O. Box 2750, Monterey, CA 93942.

Elizabeth E. Hamaker, 74

(May 14) HEMINGFORD - Elizabeth Ellen Hamaker, 74, died Saturday, May 12, 2001, at Hemingford Community Care Center. She was born March 16, 1927 at Mead, S.D. Her parents were Knox and Mary (Larkin) Sublett.

She attended Spearfish High School and moved with her family to Bremerton, Wash., where she graduated. After graduation she worked at the U.S. Naval Yard at Bremerton. She was married to Jerry Hamaker on June 8, 1947, in Washington. He preceded her in death. After moving to Nebraska, she worked at Crawford Livestock, Crawford State Bank and Fort Robinson State Park. She was a member of the Crawford United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Belmont Neighbors Extension Club, Eagles Auxiliary, B.P.O.E. Does, RSVP, and various card clubs. She also was a 4-H leader, and a past member of the Belmont School Board.

She is survived by three daughters, Kathy Gettert of Hemingford, Peggy Eberspecher of Scottsbluff, and Candy Hamaker of Centennial, Wyo.; two sons, Paul Hamaker of Crawford, and Andy Hamaker of Grand Junction, Colo.; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She also is survived by three sisters, Ola LaPlant of Grand Rapids, Minn., Marj Peterson of Las Cruces, N.M., and Georgia Bradwell of Bothell, Wash.

Mrs. Hamaker's funeral will be at 2 p.m., Tuesday, May 15, at the United Methodist Church at Crawford, with Rev. Tim Pratt officiating. Burial will be in the Crawford Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family in care of Hemingford Community Federal Credit Union, P.O. Box 991, Hemingford, NE 69348-0991, or Security First Bank at Crawford. Funds will be designated at a later date. Chamberlain Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Pauline E. Ginn, 82

(May 14) ALLIANCE - Pauline E. Ginn,82, died Saturday, May 12, 2001 at Highland Park Care Center. She was born October 13, 1918, to Gus and Winifred (Van Buskirk) Lembrich at Hay Springs.

She grew up in the Quaker Community five miles south of Hay Springs. She graduated from 10th grade at the Sandridge School. She married E.S. "Sam" Ginn on December 5, 1936, at Chadron. They farmed near Rushville, moving to Alliance in 1945 where she spent her life caring for her home and family. She enjoyed reading, needlecrafts, and working in her yard and garden.

Her survivors include her husband Sam; daughters Elnor Hucke and Phyllis Briggs both of Alliance; son, Curtis Ginn of Rapid City, S.D.; son-in-law, David Briggs of Alliance; sister, Joyce Alcorn of Hay Springs; brother, Derald Lembrich of Lincoln; granddaughters, Kim Briggs of Bellevue, Shiela Letcher of Hay Springs, and Michelle Ginn of Rapid City, S.D.; and fourteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, two infant brothers, and one granddaughter.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday, May 16, 2001 at the Bates-Gould Chapel, Rev. Gene Van Huss officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Highland Park Care Center or a charity of the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Max H. Poppen Jr, 46

(May 22) EAGLE - Max Henry Poppen Jr, 46, died Friday, May 16, 2003, at his home from a long battle with cancer. He was born Oct. 20, 1956, at Alliance, to Max Sr. and Barbara (Schwaderer) Poppen.

He moved to Lincoln in 1965. After graduating from Waverly High School in 1974, he went to work for Burlington Northern Railroad. After several years in the track department, he became an engineer until ill health forced him to retire. He married Collen Stewart on Jan. 14, 1984. He loved life. He loved to fish and hunt. He loved his family and loved the family reunions. He will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife of the home; his parents; brother John (Kris) Poppen of Giltner; sisters Kim (Terry) Clark of Central City and Sandy (Alex) Hernandez of Lincoln; and several nieces and nephews. He also is survived by his maternal grandmother, Rita Schwaderer of Alliance; and many aunts and uncles including Shirley Sterner and Ann Donovan of Alliance. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Emil Schwaderer, John Henry Poppen and Minnie Fink.

Mr. Poppen's memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 24, at Lincoln, with Rev. Mark Heilman officiating.

Ben Cady, 83

(May 23) GORDON - Ben Cady, 83, of Gordon died Monday, May 21, at Rapid City Regional Hospital, S.D. He was born Dec. 15, 1917, at Gordon. His parents were Clifford and Winnie (Sanders) Cady.

He married Viola Gardner on July 2, 1940, at Alliance. He was a farmer/rancher in the Merriman area, and later worked for the county before moving to Petersburg and then Chester. He returned to Gordon in 1974 to stay. He is survived by his wife, Viola Cady of Gordon; sons Walt Cady, Ben Cady and Steve Cady; daughters Betty Mapes and Carol Garner; 14 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. He also is survived by his brother, Bob Cady; and three sisters, Eila Chappell, Veda Ford and Lona Baldauf.

Mr. Cady's memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, May 25, at the United Methodist Church in Gordon, with Rev. Nita Gelling Cloran officiating. Memorials may be made to Gordon City Library, Gordon Senior Center or Tri-State Old-Time Cowboys Association, in care of the First National Bank, P.O. Box 290, Gordon, NE 69343. Cicmanec-Pier Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
