Sherrill -- Donald Dean, 72, Lincoln, died Tuesday (11/27/2001). Born, Albion (7/1/29) at home of parents, O.G. and Lucille (Fleming) Sherrill. Attended Albion Public Schools until graduation in May 1947. In September 1947, started part time at Norfolk Junior College and was radio announcer for radio station WJAG of Norfolk. In November 1948, left radio station, and in January 1948, became clerk of Boone County for nearly two years. In September 1951, attended Kearney State College, where he was active in many organizations and graduated, May 1954; worked all four years for radio station KGFW of Kearney. Then became radio announcer for radio station KRGI in Grand Island, where he met Mary Lou Vance, a nursing student at St. Francis School of Nursing. They were married 2/20/55. To this union, four children were born: Terrence in 1955; Kevin, 1958; Michael, 1961; Kathleen, 1965. Attended University of Nebraska, 1957-58, where he was awarded master's degree in speech pathology. In 1958, became speech pathologist for Grand Island Public Schools. In 1961, was called to be consultant for speech pathology for Nebraska Department of Education, and in August 1963 was promoted to state director of special education for state Department of Education. In 1965, left the department and was awarded a graduate assistantship to complete doctorate. Awarded doctorate of educational psychology from University of Nebraska, January 1966. After receiving doctorate, was assistant professor of speech pathology for NU. In 1968, accepted position of director of special education for Lincoln Public Schools, where he worked until retirement 24 years later in 1992. On Nov. 13, 2001, the Behavior Skills Program Center was unanimously named the Donald D. Sherrill Education Center by Lincoln Board of Education.
Was active in many local and state organizations. Was adjunct professor of Special Education Department at NU his entire career. Member, American and Nebraska Speech and Hearing Associations. President, State Council of Exceptional Children and belonged to National Council of Exceptional Children. Also member of national American Psychological Association and Phi Kappa Delta, honorary education fraternity. Belonged to Metro Special Education group; Nebraska Council of School Administrators, National Council for Administrators for Special Education (C.A.S.E.); Nebraska Association of Special Education Supervisors, serving one year as president. Also served one year as president of Nebraska Speech and Hearing Association. Was active in forming Nebraska Association of Retired School Administrators and was vice president for one year. Member: Advisory Committee to Teachers College of University of Nebraska; Legislative Committee of Nebraska Council of School Administrators; board member, Lincoln-Lancaster Child Guidance Center, where he served one year as president; State Special Education Advisory Council for Nebraska Department of Education; board member, Lincoln-Lancaster Mental Health Advisory Committee; Lancaster County Office of Mental Retardation, where he served one year as president. After retirement, active in many volunteer organizations in Lincoln community.
Survivors: wife, Mary; sons, daughters-in-law, Terrence and Julie, Kevin and Jenny, Michael, all Lincoln; daughter, son-in-law, Kathy and Steve Huneke, Seneca, Kan.; brothers, sisters-in-law, Royce and LaVonne, Stan and Bev, all Albion; 12 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter. Preceded in death by parents.
Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 6001 A St. Lincoln Memorial Park. Visitation: 9 a.m.-9 p.m. today, with family greeting friends, 6-8 p.m., Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home, 6800 S. 14th St. Memorials in lieu of flowers to Lincoln Public Schools Foundation or Barkley Center at University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Spires -- Donna Mae, 71, York, formerly Exeter, died Wednesday (11/28/2001). Born, Merrick County (10/29/30) to McKinley E. and Faye (Campbell) Land. Teacher's aid, Exeter Public Schools, 21 years. Previous member, Exeter United Methodist. Past president, Exeter American Legion Auxiliary. Current member: First United Methodist Church, York; Eight and Forty Club. Enjoyed crocheting, reading, genealogy, and gardening. She was twelfth descendent of the Mayflower.
