Sr. Florence Southall, 95

(May 27) ALLIANCE - Sister Florence Southall, 95, died Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at Marion Residence. She was born Oct. 24, 1907 at Bellevue, to Vincent Harry and Clara (Sentiff) Southall.

She made her First Profession of Vows Aug. 27, 1928. Sr. Florence worked in education at Sacramento, Calif., Holy Rosary and St. Francis at Mission, S.D., O'Neill, Alliance, Rushville, and Harrison, and at Marycrest at Denver, Colo. She is survived by her sister, Rosemary Southall of Lexington, Ky. She was preceded in death by her parents, and one sister.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 28, at Marion Residence, with Fr. Bryan Ernest officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. A wake service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, at Marion Residence. Memorials may be given to the Sisters of St. Francis, 1104 Toluca Ave., Alliance, NE 69301. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Leonard Milburn, 94

(May 27) RUSHVILLE - Leonard Milburn, 94, died Sunday, May 25, at his home. He was born Jan. 31, 1909, at Torrington, Wyo., to William and Elizabeth (Roberts) Milburn.

He is survived by his sons Doug (Donna) Milburn and Leonard (Carol) Milburn of Rushville, and daughter Ardis Fuelde of Rushville; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He also is survived by one sister, Florence Monson of Rockford, Ill.

Mr. Milburn's funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 28, at Cicmanec-Chamberlain-Pier Chapel at Rushville, with Rev. Al Trucano officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Cicmanec-Chamberlain-Pier Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

William Jones, 93

(May 27) HYANNIS - William Boyd Jones, 93, died Monday, April 14, 2003, at his daughter's home at Moore, Okla. He was born on a ranch south of Hyannis in 1909, to Will and Alice Jones.

He began his education in Grant County schools, and attended elementary and secondary school at Hyannis, where he graduated with the Class of 1927. Except for five years spent at Colby, Kan., he was a resident of Grant County all his life. He was a member of the United Church of Christ, Zion Lodge 234 AF&AM, Sandhills Commercial Club, and a charter member of the Grant County Historical Society He is survived by his daughter Marjorie (Bill) Annunziata of Moore; sons John (Marlene) Jones of Mullen, Robert Jones of Rockville, Md., and Howard Jones of Melbourne, Fla.; ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He also is survived by three sisters, Marie Jones, Ruth Perrett and Lois Mansfirld, many nieces and nephews, and special friends Bob and Sandy Yorges, Miles and Joan Branson and Roy Monahan.

He will be interred at the Hyannis Cemetery in the Jones Family plot.

Vida Anderson, 64

(May 27) CRAWFORD - Vida Jane Anderson, 64, died Friday, May 23, 2003, at Chadron. She was born April 29, 1939 at Crawford, to Warren and Edith (Crile) Riggs.

She attended Crawford High School. She was an avid bowler and a member of the VFW Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary, Crawford Jaycees and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. She is survived by daughter Jody Tonjes and her husband of Omaha; Terry O'Donnell and wife of Alliance; and grandchildren Codee, Owen and Jordan Tonjes of Omaha, and Jallyce and Trenton O'Donnell of Alliance. She also is survived by her mother, Edith Geary of Crawford; sisters Billie Hamer of Idaho Springs, Colo., Betty Calder of Lincoln, Dannie Stull of Morrill and Mary Sample of Minatare; and brothers Garry Riggs of St. Edward and Frank Riggs of Bertrand.

Mrs. Anderson's funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 29, at Christ Community Church at Crawford, with Rev. Eldon Mincks officiating. Burial will be in Crawford Cemetery. A memorial has been established to the Crawford Fire Department and Rescue Unit Fund, c/o Chamberlain Chapel, P.O. Box 907, Chadron, NE 69337-0970, or the donor's choice. Chamberlain Chapel of Crawford is in charge of arrangements.

Darleen Ostrander, 71

(May 28) CHADRON - Darleen Ostrander, 71, of Chadron died Friday, May 26, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital. She was born June 16, 1929 at Gregory, S.D. Her parents were Glenn and Wilma Soper.

She was married to H.E. "Ozzie" Ostrander on June 20, 1948. She was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church, Past Honored Queen of the Order of Jobs Daughters, a member of the Chadron Woman's Club, and an active member of the R.S.V.P Volunteer Program.

She is survived by her husband Ozzie Ostrander of Chadron. She also is survived by one brother, Dick Soper of Golden, Colo.

Mrs. Ostrander's funeral will be at 2 p.m., Tuesday, May 29 at the United Methodist Church at Chadron, with Rev. K.F. Kaleuati officiating. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery. Chamberlain Chapel of Chadron is in charge of arrangements.

Paul Bussinger, 93

(May 28) NORFOLK - Paul Bussinger, 93, died Saturday, May 26, 2001, at Park Place Health Care Center at Grand Island. He was born March 31, 1908, at Bassett. His parents were Ernest and Anna (Kapperman) Bussinger.

He married Edith m. Sanger on September 13, 1930, at Burwell. She died in 1997. He is survived by two sons, Gerald Bussinger of Alliance and Marvin Bussinger of Gordon; one daughter Paula Shull of Grand Island; 14 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Rock County Hospital Foundation, Rock County Ambulance Fund, Bassett Volunteer Fire Department or to St. Peter Lutheran Church. Mr. Bussinger's funeral will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, May 30, at St. Peter Lutheran Church at Bassett, with Pastor Frank Woodall officiating. Interment will be at the Bassett Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Hoch Funeral Home at Bassett from Tuesday until the time of the funeral on Wednesday. Hoch Funeral Home at Bassett is in charge of arrangements.

Vivian H. Brunkow, 84

(May 28) ALLIANCE - Vivian H. Brunkow, 84, died Sunday, May 26, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital. She was born April 11, 1918, at Alliance to Clyde P. and Zua Z. Mann.

She lived most of her life in the Alliance area. She was married to David B. Brunkow on Sept. 12, 1948, at Alliance. She was a member of the United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school for many years and was active in the United Methodist Women. She worked for J.C. Penney's for a few years before going to work for the Rhoad's Store until her retirement in 1985. She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother who will be greatly missed by all. She is survived by her husband David; daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Robert Engelhaupt of Alliance; son and daughter-in-law, Michel and Barbara Brunkow of Lincoln; grandchildren, Ryan, Brandon and Cassidy Engelhaupt, Amanda and Sara Brunkow. She also is survived by one brother, Vernon Mann of Seattle, Wash.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, May 30, at the United Methodist Church at Alliance with the Reverend Mark Schutt officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to the family or given to a charity of the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Elmer R. Treat, 92

(May 29) ALLIANCE - Elmer R. Treat, 92 of Hyannis, died Friday, May 25, 2001, at Crossroads Assisted Living in Alliance. He was born May 17, 1909, at Thedford to Charles and Inez (Hulbert) Treat.

On October 5, 1940, he married Opal Loomis at North Platte. She preceded him in death in 1991. He lived and worked in the Sandhills all of his life. His survivors are his daughter and son-in-law, Joanne and Bob Tobin of Portland, Ore.; grandsons, Doug and Don Tobin of Portland, Ore.; granddaughters, Ashley and Cheyenne Tobin of Portland, Ore.; sisters Nina Tognarelli and Ann Wheeler of Salem, Ore.; nephew and wife, Gordon and Edna Anderson of Anselmo; and their children Julie, Ann, Kim, Russ, Doug, Joan and Robin.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m., Friday, June 1, at Hyannis Cemetery with the Reverend Linda Martin officiating. The family requests casual attire. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Karen I. Minich 59

(May 29) HEMINGFORD - Karen I. Minich 59, died Saturday, May 25, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital. She was born October 31, 1942, at Alliance to Lyle and Dorothy (Hacker) Minich.

She graduated from Hemingford High School in 1960, from Chadron State College with a B.S. degree in 1964, and from Open Bible College with a B.A. in 1969. She taught school for 151/2 years at Lusk, Wyo., Lodgepole, Holbrook, Ariz., Boise, Idaho, North Platte, and a rural school in Box Butte County. From 1985 to 2000 she worked at K-Mart, Books Plus, Lucas Sport Manufacturing, Good Samaritan Village and finally at Alco where she was a group manager when she had to take a leave of absence because of illness. She is survived by her parents, Lyle and Dorothy Minich; her sister Sally Minich; her brother and sister-in-law, David and LaRonda Minich all of Hemingford; her nephew and his wife, Tony and Maria and great-nephew, Logan Minich; and her nephew, Chris Minich.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, May 30, at the Congregational Church at Hemingford with the Rev. Walter Cline officiating. Burial will be in the Hemingford Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Hemingford Congregational Church, Hemingford Volunteer Firefighters Association or the Alliance Volunteer Fire Department. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Arnold O. Stafford, 84

(May 29) SCOTTSBLUFF - Arnold O. "Chief" Stafford, 84, died Sunday, May 27, 2002,at Regional West Medical Center. He was born Feb. 3, 1918, at Kenneth, Minn., to Charles and Jennie (Groff) Stafford.

At the age of 12, he moved to Alliance, where he grew up and received his education. In January of 1941, he enlisted in the United States Navy, and he completed twenty years of service, retiring as a Chief Yoeman. He married Lavon Warthen Feb. 25, 1943, at Harrisburg. While in the Navy, he served in the South Pacific during World War Two. He served on the submarine Sculpin, the sub-tender USS Holland, and on the USS Sargo. He served in the Com. Serv. Pac in Hawaii, the Admiral's Office at Hunter's Point at San Diego, Calif., the recruiting offices at Denver and Scottsbluff, the Air Force Missile Center at Cocoa, Fla., and the final four years in the Navy were spent at the Pentagon at Washington, DC, as a legal stenographer and court reporter for Admiral Duke's Project for navigation and safety at sea. While in the Navy, he received the Good Conduct Medal, the American Defense Medal, the Asiatic/Pacific Medal, the American Area Medal, the Honorable Service Lapel Pin, the Philippine Defense Medal, The China Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal for service in WW2.

He is survived by his wife, Lavon Stafford of Scottsbluff; son and daughter-in-law, Tim and JoAnn Stafford of Mitchell; grandchildren, Jeff Stafford of Story, Wyo., Todd and Troy Stafford, both of Denver, Colo., Mystic and Randy Aitken of Bourbonnais, Ill., Sue Colfelt of Marysville, Wash., and Dani and Rick Channel of Englewood, Colo.; step-grandchildren, Merrie and Joe Denini of Seattle, Wash., and Sharon and Don Tavaglione of Riverside, Calif.; great-grandchildren, Melissa and Colton Stafford, Alyssia Channel, Daisha and Austin Aitken, Cassie Colfelt, and Raylee Duncan; and step-great-grandchildren, Mitchell Richstad and Holly Denini. He also is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Rose and Gene Crafts of Chappell; brother Edward Stafford of Denver, Colo.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, son Bill Stafford, daughter Vicki Stafford Colfelt, brothers Phayne, John and Donald, and sisters Margaret Thompson and Helen Carlson. At his request, his remains were cremated.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, May 31, at The First Church of God, 2122 Avenue F, Scottsbluff, with Pastor Guy Walton officiating. Memorials may be directed to the First Church of God. Jolliffe Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Sister Eileen Gran, 73

(May 30) ALLIANCE - Sister Eileen Gran, 73, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at Good Samaritan Health Care Center in Alliance. Mary Ellen Gran was born July 20, 1927 at Bloomfield, to Elmer W. and Eva May (Parkhurst) Gran.

She professed her religious vows on August 17, 1947. She was a retired Elementary (Montessori) Teacher, having taught in Indian Mission schools in South Dakota, as well as having taught in Nebraska, Colorado, Rome, Italy, and Australia. Her survivors are her sisters and brothers, Carolyn Holsinger of Sidney, Virginia Greenmyer of Leavenworth, Kans., Elizabeth Gran of Denver, Colo., Jim Gran and Willis Gran of Gordon, Eileen Gran of Sidney, and Patricia Mertens of Springfield, Mo., as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Monday, June 4, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Alliance. Father Bryan Ernest will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Wake services will be Sunday, June 3 at 7 p.m. at Marian Residence. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Louise Reyes, 77

(May 30) CRAWFORD - Mary Louise Reyes, 77, died Saturday, May 26, at Ponderosa Village in Crawford.

She was born Oct. 9, 1923. Two sons survive her, Jeff Reyes of Crawford and Paul Cisneros of Brandon, Miss.

Mrs. Reyes funeral will be at 10:30 Thursday, May 31, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, with Father Loren Pohlmeier officiating. Burial will be in Catholic Cemetery at Crawford. Memorials may be made in care of the family, 729 Annin St., Crawford, NE 69339.
