Jack L. Cullen, 78

(May 30) MADISON, Wis. - Jack L. Cullen, 78, died Wednesday, May 1, 2002, at HospiceCare, Inc. He married Edna Boyer, formerly of Alliance. He worked at Economy Furniture at Alliance, then for Gregg Co. at Longview, Texas. He is survived by his wife Edna; son Dr. Randall Cullen of Madison; daughter Sandra Pugh of Omaha; and seven grandchildren. He also is survived by his sister, Frieda Taylor of Kentucky.

Mr. Cullen's memorial service was Friday, May 10, at the HospiceCare Chapel.

F.P. "Fred" Martin, 74

(May 30) VALLEY CITY, N.D. - Fernand Paul (F.P. Fred) Martin, 74, died Monday, May 28, 2002, at Mercy Hospital. He was born Feb. 6, 1928, at Marion, N.D. His parents were Fred and Laura (Glass) Martin.

He worked for Bell Telephone Co. from 1944 to 1982 with the exception of his service in the U.S. Army in the Aleutian Islands from 1946 and 1947. In 1951, he married Shirley Stringer, with whom he had three children. In 1973, he married Ardis Wagar. He attended First Baptist Church, was a charter member of the Dakota Ramblers Square Dance Campers Association, VFW Post 2764 and The Telephone Pioneers. He is survived by his wife, Ardis; son Michael Martin, Hay Springs; daughters Audrey Hoerler and Rebecca Martin of Alliance; three step-sons, 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He also is survived by one sister, Phyllis Hawkinson of Moreno Valley, Calif.; and two sisters in law.

Mr. Martin's funeral will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, June 1, at the First Baptist Church, with Rev. Allan Gerber officiating. Interment will be in Memory Gardens near Valley City. A memorial has been established to The Hospice of the Red River Valley, 575 Tenth St. SW, Valley City, N.D. 58072.

Clarence R. Sherlock, 78

(May 30) GERING - Clarence R. Sherlock, 78, died Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at Beverly Healthcare at Scottsbluff. He was born January 8, 1924, at Bayard to Ralph and Minnie Mae (Elliott) Sherlock.

In the Good Street Precinct, he attended school in District 42. He farmed at Alliance for many years. After leaving the farm he was employed as a truck driver and in jewelry repair. He married Edna Stites July 19, 1944, at Scottsbluff. He is survived by his wife, Edna of Gering; daughter and son-in-law, Lillie and Del Clary of Englewood, Colo.; son, Ellis Sherlock of Brush, Colo.; daughter and son-in-law, Ella and Stanley Thomas of Ottumwa, Iowa; son and daughter-in-law, Leyn and Marcia Sherlock of Gering; daughters and sons-in-law, Trina and Roger Kaufman of Gering; Ida and Jim Penny of Aurora, Colo.; Chris and Wayne McGrew of Mitchell; grandchildren, Penny (Mike) Clary Goetz, Linda (Troy) Lupher, Paula (Tony) Butler, Robin (Alex) Goldbach, Shawna Thomas, Connie Knicely, J.R. (Chandra) Muske, Corey Kaufman (Sheila), Mike (Amy) Kaufman, Crystal Kaufman, Brett Penny, Dylan McGrew and Stacy McGrew; and great-grandchildren, Cody, Mackenzie, A.J., Daemon, Lillie, Liam Kyra, David, Erin, P.J., Alexa, Trenton, Remingten. He also is survived by two nephews, Greg Sherlock and Randy Sherlock. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, a son, two brothers, Wayne and Loren, sister, Helen Irene, and a sister-in-law.

There will be a gathering of family and friends from 10 a.m. to noon, Friday, May 31, at the I.O.O.F. Hall, 800 N Street, Gering. A private graveside will be held at a later date. Cremation was held at Sunset Memorial Park Crematory. A memorial has been established to the family, 905 7th Street, Gering, NE 69341. Dugan Kramer Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Louise Reyes, 77

(May 31) CRAWFORD - Mary Louise Reyes, 77, died Saturday, May 26, 2001, at Ponderosa Village in Crawford.

She was born Oct. 9, 1923. Two sons survive her, Jeff Reyes of Crawford and Paul Cisneros of Brandon, Miss.

Mrs. Reyes funeral will be at 10:30 Thursday, May 31, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, with Father Loren Pohlmeier officiating. Burial will be in Catholic Cemetery at Crawford. Memorials may be made in care of the family, 729 Annin St., Crawford, NE 69339. Chamberlain Chapel of Crawford is in charge of arrangements.

Donald A. Lineback, 69

(May 31) BALLSTON SPA, N.Y. - Donald A. Lineback, 69, died Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at Saratoga Hospital. He was born July 1, 1932, at Ellsworth. His parents were Paul and Ocia Lineback.

He served in the U.S. Air Force for 21 years, until his retirement in 1971. He then worked for Saratoga County and was a manager for Stewart's for many years. He was a member and past commander of American Legion Post 234 and VFW Post 358. His wife, Norma Bowers Lineback; daughters Donna Phenecie of Ballston Spa, Deborah and Mark Fraser of Nashua, N.H., and Denise and Jim Romeo of Clifton Park, N.Y.; sons Duane and Cayte Lineback of Mechanicville, N.Y., and Denis and Sharon Lineback of Schenectady, N.Y.; and 14 grandchildren survive him. He also is survived by two brothers, Vern Lineback of Chadron and Bernard Lineback of Gering; three sisters, Phyllis Girton of British Columbia, Margaret Huddle and Jean Plaster of California; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Lineback's funeral will be at 10 a.m., Monday, June 3, at Armer Funeral Home, Inc., 39 East High St., Ballston Spa, NY 12020 A memorial has been established to Community Hospice of Saratoga, 179 Lawrence St., Saratoga Springs, NY 12866.

Donald E. Smith, 73

(June 1) ALLIANCE - Donald E. Smith died Thursday, May 31, 2001, at Box Butte General Hospital. He was 73.

He was born Jan. 21, 1928, at Hay Springs, Neb., to Otto V. and Della (Green) Smith. He married Erma J. Harris on March 26, 1949, at Alliance.

He was a life-long area resident where he owned and operated "Smitty's Service & Repair" for 25 years. He had also worked at the Ford Garage, the Sinclair station, and the Enco Station. He was a life-member of the Eagles.

He is survived by his wife Erma J. Smith of Alliance; children and spouses, Dr. Rockie and Susan Smith of Martin, S.D., Kolinda and Randy Hitchcock of Alliance, Cathey and Dan Tooley of Alliance, Robyn and Jim Peltz of Alliance, and Roger and Donna Osborn Smith of Alliance. He is also survived by sisters Jenny Wyatt of Hastings, Neb., and Della Sanchez of Alliance; brothers Albert Smith of Bennett, Neb., Otto Smith of Charleston, S.C., and Evert Smith of Alliance; 14 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, June 6, at 10 a.m. at the Bates-Gould Chapel, with the Reverend Mark Schutt officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given in care of the family at 718 Sweetwater Ave., Alliance, NE 69301. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Jerry Schoolcraft, 57

(June 1) BRIDGEPORT - Jerry James Schoolcraft, 57, of Bridgeport, died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at Heritage Health Care Center at Gering. He was born Aug. 19, 1943, at Sidney.

His parents were Jerry A. and Anna (Caywood) Schoolcraft. He attended school at Gurley and was one of the first 50,000 men called to active duty during the Vietnam conflict. He married Dorene Smith on Dec. 22, 1973 at Sidney.

They lived in the Sidney and Bridgeport area during their marriage. He was a carman for Burlington Northern Railroad until an injury forced him into retirement. He also was active in the Army National Guard.

He is survived by his wife, Dorene of Bridgeport; two daughters, Jeana Schoolcraft of Bridgeport, and Ruby Moon of Longmont, Colo.; and three grandchildren. He also is survived by his mother, Anna Schoolcraft of Bridgeport; four sisters, Joyce Dobrinski of Bridgeport, Jill Wood of Mackinau, Ill., Pam Longbine of Webb City, Mo., and Lynn Smith of Elm Creek; and two brothers, Joe Schoolcraft of Gurley, and John Schoolcraft of Colorado Springs, Colo.

Mr. Schoolcraft's funeral will be at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, June 2, at the New Life Assembly of God Church at Bridgeport, with Pastor John Mustoe officiating. Burial will be in the Gurley cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, June 1, at Jolliffe Funeral Home at Bridgeport.

A memorial has been established to the Bridgeport Rescue Unit. Jolliffe Funeral Home in Bridgeport is in charge of arrangements

Debra Beth Burgess, 35

(June 1) SCOTTSBLUFF - Debra Beth Burgess, 35, died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at Regional West Hospital in Scottsbluff.

She was born Sept. 3, 1965, at Alliance. Her parents were Bernard and Ruth (Stevens) Burgess. She resided for 30 years at the Area 2 Human Development Group Home in Scottsbluff.

She is survived by her parents, Bernard and Ruth Burgess of Ashby; and three brothers, Gary Burgess, Bernie Burgess and Dave Burgess.

Miss Burgess' funeral will be 2 p.m., Saturday, June 2, at the Calvary Episcopal Church at Hyannis, with The Reverend Christine Mottl officiating. Burial will be in the Ashby Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church. Memorials may be made to the donor's choice. Mullen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Erica Jean Carter, 20

(June 2) ALLIANCE - Erica Jean Carter, 20, died Thursday, May 29, 2003, at her home in Alliance. She was born April 27, 1983, in Scottsbluff to Bruce and Sharon (Knapp) Carter.

Erica lived in Alliance all of her life and was raising her daughter, Alysha Rose Gunn who survives her. She is also survived by her father, Bruce Carter of Alliance, mother, Sharon Carter of Alliance, brother Kyle Carter of Alliance, grandparents, Vera Carter of Alliance, Peggy Elliott of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Gary and Kay Knapp of Crawford, Bernie and Betty Hotchkiss of Waverly, Neb., great-grandfather Ray Rohrbouck of Alliance, uncles and aunts, Ken and Ronda Carter, Mark Carter, Greg and Lisa Carter all of Alliance, Bernie and Pam Hotchkiss of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Rhonda and Michael Patestas of New York, N.Y., Robbie and Kim Hotchkiss of Vinton, Iowa, special friends Jeff and Ranee Wignall of Alliance, Alysha's father Shane Gunn of Lincoln, and numerous cousins. Her grandfather, Larry Carter, and great-grandmother Martha Vallentine preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, June 3, at 2 p.m. at the Alliance Berean Church with Pastor Dave Wilson officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. The family would prefer memorials in care of her daughter. They may be sent in care of the family at 1004 Box Butte Ave., Alliance, NE 69301. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mabel Klemke, 93

(June 2) HEMINGFORD - Mabel Klemke, 93, long time resident of Hemingford, died Friday, May 30, 2003, at Regional West Medical Center. She was born Jan. 25, 1910, in rural Box Butte County, Neb., to Joseph and Agnes (Hollinrake) Romer.

After graduating from St. Agnes Academy in Alliance, Neb. in 1928, she attended business school in Grand Island. She taught school in rural Box Butte County until her marriage to Albert Klemke on Aug. 27, 1930, in Hemingford. They lived and worked on the Klemke family homestead southwest of Hemingford, until their retirement in 1973, when they moved to Hemingford. She is survived by sons Robert and wife Addie of Alaska; Gerald of Oshkosh, Neb.; Ronald and wife Lynne of Oshkosh, Neb.; Albert and wife Joyce of Hemingford, Neb.; daughters, Claudia Braden and husband Mel of York, Neb.; Carolyn Burke of Grand Junction, Colo.; and Sylvia Klemke of Charlotte, N.C. Other survivors include 18 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, son Melvin, and husband Albert.

Funeral services will he held Tuesday, June 3, at 10 a.m. at the St. Bridget Catholic Church in Hemingford. Father Vince Parsons will officiate. Burial will be in the Hemingford Cemetery. A wake service will be Monday, June 2, at 7 p.m. at the church. Memorials may be given to the Hemingford Rescue Unit. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Lila B. Piihl, 82

(June 2) ALLIANCE - Lila B. Piihl, 82, died Saturday, May 31, 2003, at the Box Butte General Hospital surrounded by her family and friends. She was born May 16, 1921, at Arthur County, Neb., to Alva and Pearl (Robinson) Simpson.

She married George Piihl July 20, 1938, at Arthur County, Nebraska. To this union, five children were born. She was a member of the Non-Denominational Faith, and volunteered with R.S.V.P. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Karen Piihl; daughters and sons-in-law, Jean and Larry Smith, and Sharon and Jim Hansen; and daughters, Darla Hart, and Cindy Nagaki, all of Alliance. She is also survived by her sisters, Vera Griffith of San Diego, Calif., Opal Bridwell of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Verna Cinnamon of Frankfort, Ky.; brother, Dean Simpson of Keystone, Neb.; sister-in-law, Irene Simpson of North Platte; 15 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, four grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and a son-in-law.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, June 4, 2003, at 10 a.m. at the Bates-Gould Chapel. Loren Spellman, Alfred Brody, and Joyce Tuttle will be the speakers. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the family, in care of Cindy Nagaki, 1424 Buchfinck Ave., Alliance, NE 69301. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Kailey Mae Epp, 2

(June 3) NORTH PLATTE - Kailey Mae Epp, 2, of North Platte died Sunday, June 1, 2003, at Children's Hospital in Omaha. She was born June 1, 2001, at Omaha.

Her parents were Justin and Sadie Mae Carr Epp. She is survived by her parents; grandparents Julie and Joe Montague of Alliance, Jim Carr of Purdum, Betty Epp of Apache Junction, Ariz., and John and Pat Epp of Grand Island; and great-grandparents Claude and Charlene Rhoades of Grand Island, Elsie Carr of Purdum, George and Marlene Svasek of Columbus, Beulah Wilson of Apache Junction, Ariz., and Ellen Goerl and Victor Goerl, both of Grand Island. She also is survived by her sister, Kelsey Elizabeth Epp of North Platte.

Kailey Epp's funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 4, at Adams & Swanson Chapel at North Platte, with Chaplain Perry Edwards officiating. Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. until 9 p.m. today, with the family receiving friends from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery at Hershey. Memorials may be made in Kailey Epp's name. Adams & Swanson Funeral Home of North Platte is in charge of arrangements.
