Wenzl, Bill

Bill Wenzl, 69, Cabot, Ark., passed away Saturday (7/25/09) after a couple years of poor health. Bill was born August 26, 1939, in Tecumseh, Neb., to a farming family. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1957, retired after 20 years, and continued on with 20 years at the post office as a rural carrier in Cabot, Ark. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 2002. Though a dedicated military and civil servant, the joy of "Farmer Bill's" life was his garden.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Julius William Wenzl and Emma Frances Christen Wenzl Jarrett; stepfather, Harold Jarrett; brother-in-law, Leroy Abel; and sister-in-law, Sharon Wenzl. Bill is survived by his wife of 43 years, Loreen Supancheck Wenzl; daughter, Melinda Wenzl, Stafford, Va.; son, Craig Wenzl, San Francisco, Calif.; brothers, Joe (Marg) Wenzl, Tecumseh; Steve Wenzl, Choctaw, Okla.; sisters, Clarine Abel, David City; Judy (Larry) Pella; and Susie (Gary) Lacey, Tecumseh; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, other relatives and friends.

Memorial Service 11 a.m. Tuesday (8/4/09) at St. Andrew's Catholic Church, Tecumseh. Inurnment: St. Mary's cemetery, David City, at a later date. Memorials may be made to Disabled American Veterans Charitable Service, www.dav.org or Disabled American Veterans, P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, Ohio 45250-0301, Toll free (877) 426-2838.

Gill, Lawrence J.

Lawrence J. Gill, 85, of Steele City, Neb., passed away July 31, 2009 at Gardenside Long Term Care in Fairbury. He was born May 6, 1924 at Diller, Neb.

Survivors are Brother-in-law: Bud Peregrine of Endicott, Neb.; Nephews: Larry Peregrine & Wife Pat of Homosassa, Fla.; Steve Peregrine & Wife Therese of Lincoln; Niece: Kathy Peregrine of Lincoln; Great Nephews: Kit Peregrine & Wife Jennifer of Indianapolis, Ind.; Brendan Peregrine & Wife Mary, Tampa, Fla.; Aaron Peregrine & Wife Erin of Lincoln; Great Great Nephew Noah Peregrine of Tampa; Great Great Nieces: Ariana & Haylee Peregrine of Lincoln; Life Long Friend: Phyllis Milligan of Fairbury. Preceded by Parents, John & Katherine (Jones) Gill, Sister Mary Peregrine.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 3, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Fairbury, with Father John Birkel officiating. Burial at the Fairbury cemetery. Memorials to St. Michael's Catholic Church. Gerdes-Meyer Funeral Home in Fairbury are in charge.

Ramel, Howard W.

Howard W. Ramel, 84, Waverly, died Wednesday (7/29/09).

Gladys M. Kinyoun

Gladys M. Kinyoun, 91, Lincoln, formerly Clay Center, went to be with her Lord on Monday (7/27/09).

Services 2 p.m. Saturday (8/1/09) at the First United Methodist Church in Harvard with Rev. Dean Joy officiating. Interment: Clay Center cemetery. Visitation 1 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday (7/31/09) at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be directed to the First United Methodist Church in Harvard. McLaughlin Funeral Home, Clay Center, is in charge of arrangements.

Cecil D. Nichelson, 83, Valparaiso, passed away Sunday (7/26/09).

Edward A. Alm

Edward A. Alm, 72, Greenwood, died Wednesday (7/22/09). Member of American Legion, Ashland.

Survivors: wife, Joyce; daughters, Kimberly Alm and Melissa Russell, both of California; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; daughter & son-in-law, Nickolett & Todd TerMaat, Lincoln; Christine & Jerimy Weinberger, Lincoln; seven grandchildren: Anthone; Kirsten; Abigail; Adam; Anna; Kobe; Jaidyn; brother & sister-in-law, Jerry & Betty Alm, Lincoln; sister & brother-in-law, Beverly & Duane Nohavec, Eagle; many nieces and nephews. Preceded by: parents; and one sister.

Services 11 a.m. Monday (7/27/09) at Peace Lutheran Church, 9831 North 145th Street, Waverly. Memorials to the family. Butherus, Maser & Love Funeral Home will be handling the arrangements.

Willard Johansen

Willard Johansen, of Friend, died Thursday (7/23/09).

Funeral service 10:30 a.m. Monday (7/27/09) at the United Church of Christ, Friend. Arrangements by Lauber-Moore Funeral Home, Friend.

Thayer, Shane M.

Shane Michael Thayer, 30, of Lincoln, died Tuesday, July 28 in Lincoln.

Shane is survived by his mother, Valerie Thayer of Lincoln; daughter, McKenzie Katherine Thayer & former wife Laura Marie Thayer both of Fremont, NE; grandmother, Frances Amstuz of Curtis, NE and numerous other relatives & friends.

He is preceded in death by his grandfather, Marvin Amstuz.

Funeral service will be 1:30 pm Saturday at Warren United Methodist Church, 1205 N. 45th, with the Reverend Richard Haden officiating. Visitation will be from 9 am – 9 pm Friday @ Butherus, Maser & Love Funeral Home. Burial will be 11:00 am Monday in Arbor cemetery, Stockville, NE.

Memorials are suggested to The Shane M. Thayer family for later designation.

Henry, Patrick J.

Patrick J. Henry, 73, of Lincoln, died October 6, 2009. Patrick was born on May 7, 1936 to Patrick F. & Margaret (Costello) Henry in Omaha, NE.

Patrick graduated with an MBA from Creighton University in 1965.

He retired from Ameritas Investments as Vice President.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Henry of Lincoln; daughters & son-in-laws, Joan & Scott Trapp of Detroit Lakes, MN, Margaret (Peg) & Steve Saal, Colleen & Kent Krokaugger, Sue & Bill Dudzik, Sheri & Bob Peetz, Stacey Kroeger, Sallie & Karl Haas, Shannon & Brian Daehling all of Omaha; sisters & brothers-in-law, Ann & Bob Becker, Mary & Don Costello, Jean Seibel, Rita Henry; fifteen grandchildren; aunts & uncle; nieces & nephews; many cousins & friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral Mass will be 10:00 AM on Saturday, October 11, 2009 at the Holy Name Church, 3014 N. 45th Street, Omaha 68104.

Fr. Frank Baumart will officiate. Interment will follow a lunch at the church in Calvary cemetery, Omaha.

A rosary will be said at 7:00P on Friday, October 9, 2009 at Butherus, Maser & Love Funeral Home, 4040 A. Street, Lincoln 68510.

Visitation will be 9:00A-9:00P on Friday at the funeral home.

The family will be present from 5:00P-7:00P.

IN LIEU OF FLOWERS, memorials are suggested to the Villa Maria School, Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital or Creighton University.

Elliott, Richard D.

Richard D. "Riche" Elliott, 64, of Lincoln, passed away on October 9, 2009.

Rich was born March 28, 1945 to George & Helen (Coffman) Elliott in Grand Junction, CO.

Mr. Elliott worked in Radio Broadcasting & retired from Cellular One as a Sales Trainer.

Rich was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

He is survived by his wife, Anita of Lincoln; daughters, Amy & Matt McCready of Tulsa, OK, Abby Elliott of Austin, TX; son, Andy & Chrissy Elliott of Lincoln; step-father, Billy DeBey of Amarillo, TX, sister, Sue Ann & David Smith of Meeker, CO; mother-in-law, Dorothy Radloff of Lincoln; one very special granddaughter, Kaylee Lynn Elliott of Lincoln; nieces & nephews.

Funeral Services will be 2:00 PM on Monday, October 12, 2009 at St. Marks United Methodist Church.

Pastors Wayne Alloway & Paul Lepard will officiate.

Richard's wishes were for cremation & scattering at Dead Horse Point in Utah.

Visitation will be 12:00P-9:00P on Sunday @ Butherus, Maser & Love Funeral Home, 4040 A Street, Lincoln 68510.

The family will be present from 6:00P-8:00P to greet friends.

Memorials may be given to "Grandpa's Little Girl", his granddaughter, Kaylee Lynn's Education Fund or to St. Marks United Methodist Church Music Ministry.

Mettlen, Emma Lou

Emma Lou Mettlen, Age 91, of Lincoln died Wednesday, October14, 2009.

She was the owner of Jax Shack Steak House & former owner of Jax Liquor. She grew up Methodist & was a member of the sewing club, 4-H club and was the Biggest Husker Fan Ever!

Emma Lou is survived by her nieces, Maryann Wynne – Lincoln & Marjorie Hess – Strasburg, CO; Great Nephew, Ryan Wynne and many other great nephews & one great niece, Great Great Nieces & Nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John and brothers, George R. Vorhees & Charles L. Vorhees

Funeral Services will be 10:00 A.M. Monday @ Faith Bible Church, 6201 South 84th Street in Lincoln. Visitation will be from 9am – 9 pm Saturday & Sunday. Burial will be in Wyuka cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Lincoln Foundation or donor’s choice.

Svoboda, Albin A.

Albin “Al” A. Svoboda, Age 90, of Lincoln died soon after surgery on Sunday, August 5, 2009.

Al was a member of North American Martyrs Catholic Church in Lincoln, the Czech Club, a Volunteer at the Nebraska State Fair and a WWII Army Staff Sergeant Veteran, and received his business degree from Chillicothe, MO

He is survived by his sisters, Mildred Coufal of Omaha and Doris Vavak of Lincoln; Nieces and Nephews, Sharron (Vavak) McKenzie and Dan, Ray Vavak, Jr., Craig Vavak and Lu, Drs. Christine (Vavak) Cates and David, PhD’s., David Coufal and Jane, Carolyn Larsen and Wendell; Great Nieces and Nephews; Jamie (Vavak) Konopik and Zach, Karen Vavak and Ryan Brink, Stephanie (Vavak) Ridpath and Josh, CJ Vavak, Leah Cates, Stephen Coufal, Brenda Coufal; Great-Grand Niece, Makenzi Konopik.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Clarence Svoboda & brother-in-law, Ray Vavak, Sr.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 A.M. Wednesday (8-12-09) at North American Martyrs 1101 Isaac Dr., Lincoln, Nebraska with Fr. Brian Connor officiating.

Visitation will be Tuesday 9am – 9pm @ Butherus, Maser & Love Funeral Home

Portsche, Frieda

Frieda Portsche, 86, of Lincoln, passed peacefully on August 23, 2009 to be with her Heavenly Father. Frieda was born January 19, 1923 to George and Marie (Salzman) Gruenemeier.

Frieda graduated from Lincoln High School in 1941 and was united in marriage to Robert Portche in 1942. She worked for Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company until 1973 before moving to El Paso, TX for 14 years. Frieda dearly enjoyed traveling, dancing & playing cards. She also took up golf in her 60’s and on two occasions, made a “whole in one”. Frieda was very proud of her German Heritage and of the Lincoln German’s from Russia museum.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; seven brothers and three sisters.

Survivors include two daughters, Laura (Ron) Pedersen and Diane Bell of Lincoln; two sons, Robert (Vickie) and Randall (Judy) Portsche of Lincoln; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; two sisters-in law, Marion Folmer and Dorothy Gruenemeier; many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be 10:30 AM on Friday, August 28, 2009 at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Lincoln. Pastor Matthew Tooman will officiate. Interment will follow in Lincoln Memorial Park.

Visitation will be 9:00A-9:00P, Thursday, August 27, 2009 at Butherus, Maser and Love Funeral Home, 4040 A. Street, Lincoln 68510.

The family will be present from 6:00P-8:00P at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.

Hallgren, Frank M.

Frank M. Hallgren, born June 29, 1918, died September 2, 2009

Attended Irving Junior High School. Graduated from Lincoln High School, University of Nebraska with BA and MA and Harvard Business School with MBA. Served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater in psychological warfare and the Japanese occupation. Employed at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln as instructor of Business English, Associate Dean for Men, Director of Career Planning and Placement Center and Interim director of Lentz Center for Asian Culture. Active as a member and president of the College Placement Council and Rocky Mountain College Placement Council. Member and Alumni of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity.

Memorials to University of Nebraska Foundation designated for the Frank M. Hallgren Scholarship fund.

Memorial Reception in the Garden Room of Wyuka cemetery, 3600 “O” Street on Sunday, September 13, 2009 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
