Skutchan, Joseph J.

Joseph J. Skutchan Jr., 68 of Lincoln, NE. Died September 12, 2009, surrounded by friends & family, in Lincoln, NE after a long battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis. He was born November 9, 1940. Joe attended Saint James Catholic School in Crete, NE through 8th grade. He went on to Crete High School and graduated at the top of his class. He attended Doane College and graduated with honors. Joe went on to the University of Colorado in Boulder to earn his Masters Degree in Opera.

Joe taught vocal music in Wisner, NE and a short time in Dighton, KS. He o taught at Lincoln High School for 25 years and retired in 1998. Joe directed many successful musicals throughout his career. Many of his students have continued successful careers in the music world.

Joe received the Platt Alumni Music Award from Doane College for his service & contributions to the educational field. The number of awards Joseph has received in his lifetime are too numerous to mention.

Kosmos, Betty Lou

Services of Betty Lou Kosmos, widow of William, 78 years of age died Thursday, 9/17/09. Betty was a retired caregiver and a member of the Greek Orthodox Church.

McCoy, Harlan L.

Harlan L. McCoy, 86, Lincoln, died Monday, September 21. He was born December 9, 1922 in Gross, NE, the 4th son of Hilda and Robert F. McCoy. He served in the US Army in France, Belgium and Germany during World War II, including the D-Day invasion and the Battle of the Bulge. After his military service, he received his Bachelor's of Education from UN-L in 1949. He then taught Voc-Ag in Hay Springs, NE, for seven years, followed by two years as a pharmaceutical representative for the animal division of American Cyanimid Company, living in Minneapolis, MN, and Carroll, IA. His Master's degree in Education Administration was granted in 1958 from UN-L, and he then served as Superintendent of Schools in Culbertson, O'Neill, and Valentine, NE. He later served a variety of administrative roles for the Nebraska State Dept of Education in Lincoln, NE, and Nettleton College of Business and Metrotech Community College, both in Omaha, NE. After retiring in 1985, he and his wife lived in Alpine and Fresno, CA, returning to Lincoln in 2005. Harlan was a member of the Masonic Temple in Papillion, NE, the Scottish Rite & the Sesotris Shrine in Lincoln.

Harlan is survived by his childhood sweetheart (Springview, NE) and wife of 65 years, Bernadean A. (Robertson) McCoy. Their children include son Jay McCoy of Somerset, KY; son Dr. Michael McCoy and wife Liz Shea-McCoy, of Lincoln, NE; and daughter Marsha and husband Van Wetzig of Fort Collins, CO. Their grandchildren include Jenny and Adam Hoffman, Waco, TX; Mary Shea, Santa Fe, NM; Jason McCoy, Muscatine, IA; Joseph Kelly, Fort Collins, CO; Travis McCoy, Somerset, KY; and Katherine Shea, Lincoln, NE; sisters, Marvel Forgey of Springview, NE & Fern Kay Sexton & husband Walt of Hanover, IN.

Memorial Services will be held at 1:30 pm, Saturday, September 26, at

Butherus, Maser & Love Funeral Home, 4040 A Street, Lincoln, NE, reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Shriner's Hospitals for Children or Special Olympics.

Stoehr, Paul J.

Paul J. Stoehr, 89, of Lincoln, died September 22, 2009. Paul was born November 27, 1919 to Jacob and Elizabeth Marie (Herzog) Stoehr in Lincoln.

He was a lifelong shoe repairman/orthopedic bracemaker.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents and wife Lydia.

Survivors include two sons, Jeff (Judy) Stoehr of Omaha, Michael (Susan) Stoehr of Milwaukee, WI; a daughter, Tami (Norm) Kreps of Lincoln; grandchildren, Jonathan Stoehr, Keirsten Campbell, Jered Stoehr, Audi Stoehr, Heather Johnson, Tracy Warren, Trevor Stoehr and Kelsie Kreps; nine great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be 10:00 AM on Friday, September 25, 2009 at the Calvary United Methodist Church. Pastor Bill Hunter will officiate. Interment will follow in Lincoln Memorial Park.

Visitation will be Thursday, September 24, 2009 from 9:00A-9:00P at Butherus, Maser & Love Funeral Home, 4040 A. Street, Lincoln 68510.

Lucille Monica Masciotro, 80 of Lincoln, NE. Died Sunday June 21, 2009. Lucille is a Member of Saint John’s Catholic Church and retired Teachers Aide at Saint Joseph’s Catholic School. She is survived by Daughters & Sons-in-law Georgia & Jim Nelson, Sandy & Joe Hakenkamp and Daughter Pam Daly all of Lincoln. Grandchildren Amy Aerts, Jamie Akins, Jake Daly, Annie Daly, R.J. Norwood, Helen

Helen Norwood was born in Seward, NE on May 4th 1923 to Karl and Emilie Greiner. She had a very challenging life as she became handicapped at an early age. This handicap created many trials as well as triumphs. Helen attended the parochial school at Concordia College and graduated from Seward High School. Helen was the first handicap person to be hired at Lincoln Telephone & Telegraph. Helen proved to be an excellent and willing worker for 42 years. In 1949 she married Shelton Norwood. They were married for 60 years. In 1968 the company left Seward for Lincoln & the Norwood’s moved to Lincoln also. Helen was active in the Frank Woods Pioneer Association. She started making ‘goodie’ baskets and did many other projects which helped many people for many years. She also was founder of the Easter egg and Halloween events for the handicap. She was awarded the John Knox Johnston National Award and was responsible for getting Braille menus in restaurants and wrote a book, “Touched by the Hand of God.”

She was preceded in death by her parents. Helen is survived by her husband, Shelton; sisters, Harriet Norwood of Lincoln and Dorothy Sobotka & husband Duane of Richland, WA; five nieces & nephews and many other family members & friends.

Burial will be 9:30 am Monday at Seward cemetery in Seward, Ne followed by a memorial service at 11:00 am Monday at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 510 S. 33rd, Lincoln, NE with the Reverend. Mark Ebert officiating. Visitation will be from 9am – 9 pm Saturday & Sunday @ Butherus, Maser & Love Funeral Home, 4040 A Street, Lincoln.

Memorials are suggested to the Redeemer Lutheran Church towards the handicap van.
