Roy Lee Rodaway
passed away June 6, 2005
Roy Lee Rodaway, 81, Lincoln, formerly from Fremont was born on January 19, 1924 in Syracuse, Nebraska to James and Mary (Martens) Rodaway. He died on June 6, 2005 at The Ambassador in Lincoln, Nebraska after a lengthy illness. He attended high school in Dunbar, Nebraska but left before graduation to join the military forces. He enlisted on June 9, 1942 and served until April 11, 1946 in the United States Coast Guard. He was in Japan for part of his tour of duty. Until the late years of his life, Roy did not talk much about his military service. It then became a very important part of the things he had done in his lifetime. Another important day for him was getting a high school diploma. He had obtained a GED after leaving the service but had never had a high school diploma. Because of his tour of duty, he was eligible for a diploma that was presented to him at Fremont High School. All four of his children had graduated from Fremont High School by the time Roy received his diploma.

On February 22, 1950, Roy was married to Carolyn Combs in Otoe, Nebraska. Four children came into the family – Keith, Betty, Lana and Nora. In 1954, Roy started employment with the State Patrol of Nebraska as a Carrier Enforcement Officer. He would continue with that job until he retired in February of 1989 after 34 years and 10 months of weighing and checking trucks at the highway scales. Roy was stationed at the weigh station near Nickerson, Nebraska for his entire career with the Carrier Enforcement.

Roy was a member of the Nickerson Volunteer Fire Department for many years. He was involved in organizing ball teams for the boys and girls in the area. The entire family was involved in baseball, softball and basketball. Many evenings were spent at ball games before getting home to a late meal. When Keith and Betty were entering high school, the school districts were changed and a move to Fremont, Nebraska was made to avoid having children going to two different towns to school. Roy continued to coach teams in Fremont and had several trophies from the teams playing in tournaments. One Jr. High girl’s basketball team qualified to go to Kansas City to a tournament. They brought home the first place trophy!

Roy and Carolyn had 55 years of watching their children and grandchildren grow from babies to adults. Four great-grandchildren are restarting the cycle from babies to adults. Keith married Deb Stierwalt in 1972 and they have three boys, Jason, Brian and Brad. Betty married Joe James in 1972 and they have a son, Michael, and daughter, Karen. Lana was married to Marshall Holstein. They adopted three children, Jennifer, Dustin and Jessica. Unfortunately, Lana passed away in 1990 due to complications of diabetes. Nora married Randall Schenk in 1998. The great-grandchildren are Turner, son of Jason and Lori Rodaway; Carly and Brayden, daughter and son of Brian Rodaway; and Trenten, son of Brad and Rose Wismer Rodaway. Roy had four brothers and a sister. Alvin, Jesse and wife Gloria, and Kenneth and wife Betty survive him. A brother, Bennie, was killed at an early age when he was hit by a car on the way home from school. Roy’s sister, Fern, died at age 47 after suffering injuries in a car accident that caused problems for her a few weeks later. Roy’s mother and father preceded him in death.

Rest in peace Roy.

Mildred Irene Schwindt
passed away November 23, 2005

Mildred Irene (Johannsen) Schwindt was born December 31, 1927 to Hazel and Charlie Johannsen in Alliance, NE. She was the second of three children. Her brothers are Frank and Charles.

They lived on a farm north of Bayard in an area known as “Goodstreak”. They moved off the farm into Bayard in 1940 and Millie Jo graduated from Bayard High School in 1945. She was an active member of Jobs Daughters as a young woman and was a former Jobs Daughter Princess. After high school graduation, she attended and graduated from business school in Omaha, NE.

On January 13, 1946, Millie Jo married Fred Schwindt. They had four girls: Jodene Renae, Marjorie Beth, Collette Ann and Colleen Sue. They lived in Bayard, Gordon, and Alliance. Mildred and the girls moved to Lincoln in the spring of 1966. Mildred graduated from Lincoln Technical College, School of Practical Nursing in the spring of 1967. She worked as an LPN in Surgery and Recovery Room at Bryan Hospital for many years before going back to school at the University of Nebraska. She continued to do private duty nursing while in college.

Many things were important to Mildred. She was very independent and progressive, and as her Mother before her, was a strong advocate of women’s liberation. She had a strong Christian faith. She taught Sunday School as a young mother. Toward the end of her life one of her favorite things was to listen to Christian music and share her faith. She loved her grandsons and was a very “hands on” grandmother. She would get down on the floor to play with them as toddlers. She was the BEST cook and all of her family enjoyed eating what she prepared. Millie was a devoted pet owner and devoted to her “grand” pets too. She was a strong supporter of the People and Animals Living & Sharing organization (PALS).

Anyone who met or knew Millie will remember her. Many saw her as a wise woman for the lessons she taught us. Millie spent a lot of time collecting jokes and sharing them with her family and friends. During her 17 months in the Tabitha Maseman (Hospice) Unit, she never ceased to amaze everyone with her BEAUTIFUL sense of humor, among other things. She will be missed.

Psalm 30:1-5
I will extol you, O Lord; for you have lifted me up,
And have not let my foes rejoice over me.
O Lord my God, I cried out to you, and you healed me.
O Lord, you brought my soul up from the grave;
You have kept me alive, that I should not go down to the pit.
Sing unto the Lord, O ye saints of his,
And give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness.
For His anger endureth but a moment; in his favor is life:
Weeping may endure for a night,
But joy cometh in the morning.
