Lucille L. Haas, 72

(June 11) HEMINGFORD - Lucille L. Haas, 72, died Monday, June 10, 2002, at Box Butte General Hospital. She was born Jan.9, 1930, at Alliance, Nebraska to Russell L. and Laura (Dietchler) Roberts.

She was married to Donald J. Haas Nov. 6, 1949, at Hemingford. She was a member of the United Methodist at Hemingford where she was involved with many committees and activities. She also was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 9, the Box Butte General Hospital Auxiliary, and volunteered at the Hemingford Community Care Center. She was a large supporter of her children and grandchildren's activities. Family and friends were very important to her. She is survived by her husband Donald J. Haas of Hemingford daughter and son-in-law, Lynette and Bob Smith of Brookings, S.D.; sons and daughters-in-law, Bradley and Sandra Haas and Bob and Lisa Haas of Hemingford; grandchildren, Scott, Brent, and Kurt Smith; Kory and wife Kim, Kara, John, and Lance Haas; and Jordan and Joe Haas. She also is survived by her mother, Laura Roberts of Broadus, Mont.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Margaret and Willis Tipton of Broadus, Jan and Lowell Davis of Rapid City, S.D., Linda and George Morella of Broadus, and Deb and Gordon Archer of Olive, Mont.; brother and sister-in-law, Greg and Mary Jo Roberts of Terry, Mont.; sister-in-law, Honey Roberts of Minneapolis, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews. Her father, brother Leonard, and sister Darlene preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday, June 12, at the United Methodist Church at Hemingford, with Rev. Craig Collins officiating. Burial will be in the Hemingford Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the church, Prairie Haven Hospice, or the Hemingford Volunteer Fire Fighters Association. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Josiah W. Craig, 84

(June 11) HOT SPRINGS VILLARE, Ark. - Josiah W. "Bill" Craig, 84, died Thursday, June 6. He was born June 2, 1918, at Whitman. His parents were Harold Potter and May West Craig.

He was a lifetime employee of Burlington Northern Railroad, retiring in 1976. He then lived in Nebraska, Florida and Arkansas. His wife, Ethel Davis Craig, preceded him in death. He is survived by one son, Jeffrey W. Craig of Omaha; two daughters, Diana (Dennis) Christensen and Carole (Roger) Stuhmer of Hot Springs Village; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A private burial will be at Alliance Cemetery.

Amelia Libsack, 93

(June 12) BAYARD - Amelia (Schwindt) Libsack, daughter of Caroline (Reifschneider) and Henry Schwindt, rested her hands of earthly toil after 93 years as God's good and loyal servant on June 11, 2001.

"Amy" was born Feb. 10, 1908, in Badopua, Russia and immigrated with her mother, grandparents and siblings to America in 1913 aboard the grand "Prince Kaiser Wilhelm." After registering at Ellis Island in New York Harbor, she was reunited with her father, who had gone ahead to make a place for his family, and settled in Gering, Nebr., in august of that year. A Bayard resident for 81 years, she was a member of the Faith United Church of Christ at Bayard and for many years was an active member of the Faith United Women's Fellowship. Amy enjoyed quilting, cooking for her family and friends, Bible study, crocheting, singing in the German choir and being surrounded by her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, loving husband, Henry, sons Jerry and Bob, sisters, Katherine Yakel, Suzanne Constance, Leah Bumpus, Molly Osgood, Emma Cheatle, two infant daughters named Caroline, and brothers Henry H. and Fred Schwindt. Amy is survived by her daughter, Lucille Green of Mitchell, grandsons and wives, Ken and Trush Green of Scottsbluff, Greg and Lee Ann Green of Ft. Morgan, Colo., Jerry and Tory Green of Scottsbluff, and Patrick and Kris Libsack of Pierce, Colo. Also, great-grandchildren Dr. Nathan and Amy Green of San Antonio, Texas, Abby Green of Scottsbluff, Libby and Dave Murphy of Loveland, Colo., and Beau of Ft. Morgan, Colo.; great-great-grandchildren, Madison Green and Donavon Murphy; brothers and wives, Dave and Tug Schwindt of Alliance and Carl and Esther Schwindt of Gering.

Services will be at Faith United Church of Christ at Bayard at 10 a.m., Wednesday, June 13, with the Reverend Wayne Alloway officiating. A prayer service will be at Jolliffe Funeral Home in Scottsbluff at 7 p.m., Tuesday, June 12. A memorial has been established to Faith United Church of Christ at Bayard.

Viola Myrle Reeves, 82

(June 12) SCOTTSBLUFF - Viola Myrle Reeves, 82, longtime resident of Alliance, died Saturday, June 9, 2001, at Regional West Hospital in Scottsbluff. She was born Oct. 24, 1918, at Antioch, Neb. Her parents were Raymond and Maude (Thayer) Gunderson.

She was married to Melvin Reeves on April 5, 1941, at Alliance. The family moved to Scottsbluff in May 1966. She was involved with the Foster Grandparents Program through Panhandle Community Services. In addition to raising her three sons, she also raised two of her grandsons, Rock and Gary Reeves Jr. She is survived by her three sons, Gary Reeves of Scottsbluff, Ron Reeves of Glendale, Ariz., and Doug Reeves of Colorado Springs, Colo.; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She also is survived by her brother, Cecil Gunderson of Woodburn, Ore.

Mrs. Reeves' body will be cremated, and, by her request, no memorial service will be held. Flowers may be sent to the family at 413 West 21st St., Scottsbluff; or memorials may be made to Foster Grandparents Program, in care of Panhandle Community Service, 3350 North 10th St., Gering, NE 69341. Jolliffe Funeral Home of Scottsbluff is in charge of arrangements.

Ruth E. Dempsey, 92

(June 12) YUCCA VALLEY, Calif. - Ruth Eleanor Dempsey, 92, longtime Alliance resident, died Saturday, June 9, 2001, at Yucca Valley, Calif. She was born Aug. 30, 1908 at Alliance. Her parents were James E. and Lillie (Dickey) Wilson.

She was married to James E, Dempsey Feb. 14, 1935 at Washington, D.C. Mr. Dempsey preceded her in death. She attended grammar school in Alliance and high school in Denver, She was a graduate of Chadron State College. After completing college, she taught school for several years before moving to Washington, D.C. While there, she hosted a radio show and later worked for the Federal Government. She returned to Alliance in 1960 and taught at District 25 until she retired. She was a member and former deacon of the First Presbyterian Church of Alliance. She belonged to Katharine Circle 5, the GFWC Alliance Women's Club, Aloyah Chapter 185 Order of Eastern Star, Extension Club and Friends of the Library. She is survived by two sons Robert Dempsey of Lincoln and John Dempsey of Yucca Valley; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held in Alliance at a later date. Inurnment will be Arlington National Cemetery at Arlington, Va. Memorials may be made to the Frist Presbyterian Church of Alliance, Friends of the Library or a charity of the donor's choice.

Leigh Dahlgren, 91

(June 12) GORDON - Leigh Dahlgren, 91, died Sunday, June 10 at Gordon Memorial Hospital. He was born Oct. 2, 1909 in Cherry County. His parents were Arthur and Minnie (Dehm) Dahlgren.

His wife, Belle, preceded him in death in 1986. He had been a rancher south of Merriman for many years, and moved into Gordon in 1978. He is survived by two sons, Art Dahlgren of Gordon and Jack Dahlgren of Merriman; three daughters, Laveta Edwards of Gordon, Oleta Skinner of Merriman and Bernita Safe of Denver; ten grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Mr. Dahlgren's funeral will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, June 14, at St. Mark's Episcopal Church at Gordon, with the Rev. Vonne Blessman Andersen officiating. Burial will be in the Gordon cemetery. A memorial has been established for the Center Cemetery. Donations may be sent to the Community First Bank at Gordon or Merriman. Cicmaned-Pier Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Elaine M. Kilday, 65

(June 12) PALMER - Elaine M. Kilday, 65, died Tuesday, June 11, 2002, of cancer at her home. She was born Nov. 8, 1936 at Beatrice. Her parents were Raymond and Gertrude (Baumfalk) Siems.

She was married to Donald Kilday on April 28, 1963, at Beatrice. She spent her married life near Palmer and was active in ranch work at Lakeside for many years. She was a member of Fullerton United Methodist Church, Glenwood Community Club and Inner City League fast pitch softball. She is survived by her husband, son Jay and Fay Kilday of Palmer; daughters Beth Kilday of Eau Claire, Wis., Bonnie and Tim Downing of Stapleton and LuAnn and Adrian Tafoya of Truth Or Consequences, N.Mex.; and one granddaughter. She also is survived by one sister Marilyn Henry of Daykin.

Mrs. Kilday's funeral will be at 2 p.m., Friday, June 14, at the United Methodist Church at Fullerton, with Rev. Valjean Warman officiating. Burial will be in the Fullerton Cemetery.

Marian Matthews, 78

(June 12) ALLIANCE - Marian Matthews, 78, died Monday, June 10, 2002, at the Good Samaritan Health Care Center. She was born May 11, 1924, at Grafton to James and Marie (Kvoit) Brabec.

She was married to Andrew Matthews in 1943 at Geneva. She was a member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church where she also was a member of the Altar Society. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Jan Matthews of Norfolk and Pat and Shelly Matthews of Alliance; and daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Lynn Hoelting of Goodland, Kan.; and eight grandchildren. She also is survived by brothers, Milo Brabec of Phoenix, Ariz., Jim Brabec of Philadelphia, Penn., and Charles Brabec of Geneva. She was a very loving mother and grandmother. Her parents and her husband preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Friday, June 14 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, with Fr. Bryan Ernest officiating. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery. A wake service will be at 7 p.m., Thursday, June 13, at the church. Memorials may be given to the church or the Good Samaritan Health Care Center. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Agnes Price, 90

(June 12) HEMINGFORD - Agnes Margarite Hovorka Price, 90, died Wednesday, June 11, 2003, at Hemingford Community Care Center. She was born Sep. 1, 1912, in rural Box Butte County, to Albert and Emma (Teansky) Hovorka.

She attended rural schools in Sioux and Box Butte Counties, and graduated as class valedictorian in 1929 from Hemingford High School at the age of 16. On Oct. 31, 1929 she was married to Charles S. Price at the Congregational Church at Hemingford. Her primary interests were her family and friends. She enjoyed attending the Methodist Church until her health failed and then looked forward to the spiritual support of Reverend Collins. She was very active in the H.O.A. Club. She held numerous offices in the Hemingford American Legion Auxiliary and received many honors at the State level. Her survivors include her daughters Donna Dufek of Alliance and Louise Morava of Marsland; grandchildren, Terry (Steve) Bonds, Sherry (Don) Hunter, Greg (Sandi) Morava, and Steve (Susan) Morava; great-grandchildren, Heather (Jon) Hauschild, and Jenny, Alicia, Justin and Whitney Morava; and great-great-granddaughter, Carson Grace Hauschild. Her parents, husband, brother Victor, sister Eleanor, son-in-law Dallas Dufek, and granddaughter Gailene Morava preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, June 13 at the United Methodist Church, with Rev. Craig Collins officiating. Burial will be in the Hemingford Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Hemingford American Legion Auxiliary, Hemingford Volunteer Firefighters Association or to a charity of the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Cecil Eugene King, 78

(June 13) ASHBY - Cecil Eugene King, 78, died Tuesday, June 11, 2002, at Good Samaritan Health Care Center at Alliance. He was born Jan. 6, 1924 at Gordon to Lee and Elsie (Calame) King.

He served in the U.S. Army from Feb. 17, 1943, to Jan. 14, 1946. On March 25, 1948, he married Darlene J. Schafer. He worked for Bethlehem Steel Company in California for 10 years and later worked in construction for Magnolia Homes at Gering. He retired in 1986 when they moved to Ashby. He is survived by his wife Darlene; son Roger of Fayette, Mo.; daughter Karen Salinas of Scottsbluff; and grandchildren Britny Salinas and Gilbert Salinas. He also is survived by one brother Virgil King of Glenrock, Wyo.; and six sisters, Elsie Jackson of Hot Springs, S.D., Sophie Anderson of Houston, Texas, Myrtle Blaylock of Ashby, Shirley Ostrander of Indianola, Iowa, Phyllis Hamilton of Torrington, Wyo, and Thelma Kennedy of Rapid City, S.D. His parents and a brother Kenneth King preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Friday, June 14, at the Ashby United Church of Christ with Rev. Bill DeLisle officiating. Burial with military rites will be in the Ashby Cemetery. Bates-Gould Funeral Home of Alliance is in charge of arrangements.

Cleo D. Steggs, 84

(June 13) ALLIANCE - Cleo D. Steggs, 84, died Thursday, June 12, 2003, at Box Butte General Hospital. He was born June 2, 1919, at Genoa, Colo., to Clarence J. and Alma M. (Case) Steggs.

He married Delorise Weber on Dec. 21, 1938, at Alliance. He had worked as a rancher and a plumber before his retirement. He was a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses. He is survived by his wife Delorise Steggs of Alliance; son and daughter-in-law, Doyle and Marsha Steggs of Alliance; daughter, Elaine Fay Steggs of Alliance; granddaughter and her husband, Donna and Wayne Buckner of Angora; great-grandchildren, Casey Tyler, Ryan Tyler, Hannah Buckner, and Dakota Buckner, all of Angora; He also is survived by brothers and sisters-in-law, Harold and Idelle Steggs of Alliance, and Melvin and Louise Steggs of York; special brother-in-law, Bud Christensen of Alliance; sister-in-law, Therese Weber of Alliance; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister and a brother-in-law, Velma and Charles Weber.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 19, at the Bates-Gould Chapel, with Rev. Scott Steggs officiating. Memorials may be given in care of the family at 620 Mississippi, Alliance, NE 69301. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Terry L. Downing, 44

(June 14) GORDON - Terry L. Downing, 44, died Tuesday, June 12, 2001, at the Chadron Community Hospital. He was born Sept. 29, 1956 at Gordon. His parents were Harry and Agnes (Dahlgren) Downing.

He was a news and sports director at KCSR Radio at Chadron. He had also worked at radio stations at Gordon, O'Neill and Scottsbluff, and had been employed by the Sheridan County Star newspaper at Rushville. He is survived by his parents, Harry and Agnes Downing of Gordon; one brother, Gregory Downing of Gordon; One sister, Janet Rayhill of Chadron; and one nephew.

Mr. Downing's funeral will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, June 18, at the First Presbyterian Church at Gordon, with the Rev. Vonne Blessman Andersen officiating. Burial will be in the Gordon Cemetery. A memorial has been established for the American Diabetes Association. Donations may be sent to First National Bank, P.O. Box 290, Gordon, NE 69343. Cicmanec-Pier Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Luella A. Panwitz Flack, 64

(June 14) CASPER, Wyo - Luella A. Panwitz Flack, 64, died Saturday, June 9, 2001, at Central Wyoming Hospice in Casper, Wyo. She was born Feb. 26, 1937, at Alliance. Her parents were Chris and Edna (Behm) Panwitz.

She graduated from Alliance High School in 1954, and then attended Northern Colorado College in Greeley, Colo. She was employed by the Natrona County School District of Casper for 17 years, retiring in 1996. She continued working and helping the elderly until this past March. She is survived by her mother, Edna Panwitz; her daughter, Cynthia McBride of Scottsbluff; four sons, Mike Dickinson of Casper, Max of Boulder, Colo., Jack of Sunbury, Pa., and David of Austin, Texas; and nine grandchildren. She also is survived by her brother Gerald Panwitz and sister Connie Underwood, both of Alliance.

Mrs. Flack's memorial service weill at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, June. 20, at Our Savior's Luthean Church of Casper, with Pastor Todd VonGunten officiating. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 21, at Alliance Cemetery, with The Reverend Martin T. Schnare officiating. Friends and family are invited to a luncheon after the graveside service, at the Gerald Panwitz home, 6401 Lincoln Rd., Alliance. Memorials in Luella Flack's name may be made to Central Wyoming Hospice, 319 South Wilson St., Casper, WY 82601, or Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 318 E. Sixth St., Casper.
