Quentin Kavanaugh
Waterbury resident

Wm. Quentin Kavanaugh, 98, a lifelong resident of Waterbury, Neb. went to his eternal home Saturday, Feb. 3, 2007 at a family residence.

Funeral Mass will be 10: 30 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ponca, Neb. with Rev. Joe Dorcey, C.S.R, Rev. David Liewer, Rev. Vincent Beacom, Rev. John Beacom, Rev. Paul Albenesius, Rev. James Kramper, Rev. Daniel Wittrock, Rev. Rod Kneifl concelebrating. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery, at South Creek, rural Ponca.

Quentin, or "Spider, " as he was known, was the youngest of three children born to James and Katherine (Bigley) Kavanaugh. The first son died at birth and his sister, Rosemary Geddes has also preceded him in death. He graduated from Waterbury High School.

Quentin married Helen Catherine "Ella" Beacom on Oct. 20, 1941 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Jackson, Neb. The couple resided on the farm his Grandfather Kavanaugh homesteaded near Waterbury. After raising their family they moved to the land his Grandfather Bigley homesteaded closer to Ponca. The "Bigley Ravine" in Ponca State Park is named after his mother's family. The Bigleys were some of the first settlers in Ponca.

Quentin signed up in WWII but was told to go home, as they needed farmers. Farming was Quentin's passion; he loved the land and loved horses. He drove the school bus for Waterbury School, was elected to the school board and elected to the ASCS office in Ponca for several years. He owned the K & B Elevators in Waterbury with Bob Blatchford.

Quentin was considered an "old timer" and could visit with anyone and made friends wherever he went. The "Dirty Thirty's" was history he knew well. He was well liked and highly respected in the community. Quentin was the last in his generation to go home. He saw a lot of changes in his lifetime. He will always be remembered for his "colorful" vocabulary.

He was a member of St. Paul and St. Joseph Catholic Church his entire life. He was on the Parish Board and financial committee for St. Paul's at South Creek. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Six children survive Quentin: a daughter, Mary Louise Moore of Scottsdale, Ariz. and her daughters, Barbara, Julia and Katherine Moore; a daughter, Catherine Anne Kavanaugh of Scottsdale, Ariz. and her children, Michael Reimann, Regina Fluckiger and her husband, Kellan; a son, James and his wife, Grace of Sioux City and their children, Ann and her husband, Dan Oatman, Will and his wife, Lynn, James and his wife, Ann and John and his wife, Dana; a son, Joe who lives on the family farm; a daughter and her husband, Helen and Gene Stout of South Sioux City and their children, Heather and Rusty; a son and his wife, Dan and Michaela of Aurora, Colo. and their children, Jennifer, Brittany and Patrick; and 7 great - grandchildren, A.J., Katherine, Ryan, Jacob, Caleb, Kole and Shawn. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ella, a son, Patrick who was killed in a car accident in 1976, an infant grandson, his parents, a brother in infancy and a sister.

Pallbearers will be Julia Moore, Michael Reimann, John Kavanaugh, Larry Albenesius, Rusty Stout and Patrick Kavanaugh.

He left a lot of great memories, work ethics, morals, values and stories. He will be missed but never forgotten, until we meet in heaven.

Allen Becker
SSC resident

Allen Becker, 92, of South Sioux City died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2007 at a South Sioux City care center.

Services were Saturday at St. Michael Catholic Church with Father Daniel Wittrock officiating. Burial was in Calvary cemetery, Sioux City, Iowa.

Allen was born Sept. 8, 1914, in Hornick, Iowa the son of George L. and Susan S. (Allen) Becker. He graduated from Hornick High School. He married Phyllis J. Brinkman and after her death he married Adeline I. Thompson Sept. 4, 1954 at St. Michael Catholic Church in South Sioux City. She died June 29, 2000 in South Sioux City. He was a butcher for over 30 years retiring from Swift and Company.

He was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church, fraternal Order of Eagles in South Sioux City and was an avid bowler.

Survivors include three daughters: Maribeth and her husband Richard Carlson of Ames, Iowa, Kathleen and her husband Jim Pitts of Des Moines, Margaret and her husband Bill Commerford of Yucca Valley, Calif., Sylvia Hughes of Akron, Iowa, two sisters: Irene Jones of Rantoul, Ill., Marge Pettit of Kansas City, Mo., 18 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by a daughter Jean Marie Stewart, two brothers: George and Larry, a sister: Bessie Arnold and one grandson. Casket Bearers will be Ricky and Scott Hughes, Chris and Clifford Stewart, John Dross, Jason Pitts, Craig Knox, Bernie Welch and Jeff Counter. Honorary pallbearers will be sons-in-law: Richard Carlson, Jim Pitts and Bill Commerford.

Alice M. Bruns
Wayne resident

Alice M. Bruns, 93, of Wayne, Neb. died at the Heritage of Emerson Nursing Home in Emerson.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2007 at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Wayne, Pastor Kim Stover will be officiating. Burial was in Greenwood cemetery in Wayne.

Alice Marie Bruns was born on Feb. 18, 1913 on a farm southeast of Wayne, Neb., the daughter of Frederick and Louise (Greenwald) Erxleben. She was baptized and confirmed at First Trinity Lutheran Church in Altona. She attended rural school and Wayne High School. Alice was united in marriage to Fred Bruns on Feb. 26, 1936 at the Grace Lutheran Church Parsonage in Wayne. The couple farmed in the Pender and Wayne area until 1972, when they retired into Wayne. Fred died in Feb. 27, 1998. Alice was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Wayne.

Alice is survived by her two granddaughters Lori and husband Dan Gentrup of Waterbury, Neb. and Amanda "Amy" and husband Gregg Neuenfeld of Wyoming, Mich., three great - grandchildren Jordyn, Tailin, and Melenie Gentrup, and many nieces and nephews.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Fred, an infant son Keith, son Larry and a brother Arthur Erxleben.

Mary Monica Edler
SSC resident

Mary Monica Edler of South Sioux City, 80 years to the day of her birth, was reborn into eternal life on Friday, Feb. 2, 2007, with her five children and members of her loving family at her side, after succumbing to post - operative complications following recent hip replacement surgery in Liberty, Mo.

Services were Wednesday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in South Sioux City, with the Rev. Dan Wittrock officiating. Burial was in Calvary cemetery.

Mary Monica (Harty) Edler entered into this earthly life on Feb. 2, 1927, in Sioux City, to parents, John "Jack" and Charlotte (Hartnett) Harty. A life - long resident of Dakota County, Mary spent her youth in Hubbard, Neb. and all of her adult life in South Sioux City, with more than 50 years in the same home. She attended Hubbard High School in Nebraska, graduated from Cathedral Catholic High School in Sioux City and attended Briar Cliff College in Sioux City.

Mary and Ronald Earl Edler of Waterbury, Neb., were married on Nov. 19, 1947. She unselfishly devoted her entire life to loving and caring for her family. Mary was proud of her Irish heritage and traveled twice to Ireland with her children. Many years of researching her family heritage cumulated in the writing and publishing of a family history book about 10 years ago. Before her retirement, Mary worked at Metz Baking Company and then at Adcraft Inc. for her son-in-law, Jim Kelly. Mary was one tough Irish lady and her spirit and fight were evident to the very end. Her strong faith, sense of humor, fortitude and perseverance carried her through many hard times. Mary's husband, Ronnie, passed away on Feb. 22, 1970, leaving their five children for her to raise on her own. She was always remembered on both Mother's Day and Father's Day because she earned and deserved both titles. Mary proudly stated "her greatest accomplishments were her five children." She not only raised her children but her love, caring and support continued from the first grandchild all the way through to the last. Spending time with her family was the center and focus of her life. Mary was loved and will be deeply missed not only by her family but also by a large circle of friends.

She was a parishioner of St. Michael's Catholic Church in South Sioux City and a member of Catholic Daughter's Society. Mary's interests included crafts, quilting, sewing, knitting, reading, crossword puzzles, plants, playing solitaire, piano, traveling and dancing. Her vast collection of angels brought her much joy.

Survivors include five children, Mike Edler of Liberty, Mo., Constance Edler - Bradford and her husband, Reed of Show Low, Ariz., Rosanne Chase of Wakefield, Neb., Donna McIntyre and her husband, Mike of South Sioux City and Ronnie Edler and his wife, Debra of Olathe, Kan.; 13 grandchildren, Dana Marquart, Steven Edler, Justin Kelly, Tyler Hanson, Michael McIntyre, Lacy Rose Chase, Lexi Edler and Ashlee Edler; six great - grandchildren, Shelby Edler, Idalis Kelly, Kelsea Hanson, Kristen Marquart, Dalton Kelly and Ty McIntyre; a brother, Jim Harty and wife, Lucille of Sioux City; sisters-in-law, Maxine "Mac" Owens and husband, Ralph of Sioux City, Jean "Baby" Perkins and husband, Boyce "Perk" of Waterbury, Neb., Jean Eichler and husband, Hal, Dixie Edler and Sue Edler, all of Yakima, Wash.; a brother-in-law, Robert "Bob" Nelson of Independence, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews, who loved their "Aunt Mary."

Monetary donations will be given for research of Familial Dilated Cardiomyopathy so others may live. It is with much sorrow and great love that we relinquish our friend, our Mother, and most of all, Our Hero, to Eternal Life with the Lord.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Charlotte Harty; and her husband, Ronald Earl Edler.

Gerald O'Neillr
Ponca resident

Gerald Lee "Jerry" O'Neill, 57, of Ponca died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2007, in Jackson, Neb.

Services were Saturday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Jackson, Neb., with the Rev. Paul Albenesius officiating. Burial was in Ponca City cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Christy - Smith Morningside Chapel in Sioux City.

Jerry was born in Sioux City on Jan. 15, 1950, the son of Frank T. and Noma (Nelson) O'Neill. He was raised on a farm in the Ponca area. He attended the Curan and Goodwin Elementary School. He graduated from Ponca High School in 1968, where he played football. He attended Western Iowa Tech Community College and graduated from a auto mechanics course.

He married Georgi Donahue in July 1973. He later married Betty Ehle on May 4, 1985. She died in August 1991.

He worked for Tri - State Drywall. He operated his own drywall business that he owned with Pat O'Hern called O&O; Drywall. In 1979, he and his brother, Dan, built and operated the Buzzsaw II in Waterbury, Neb. He later retired due to poor health. At the time of his death, he was working part - time at the Buzzsaw II.

In 1981, he was diagnosed with Non - Hodgkin's Lymphoma. He had a bone marrow transplant in May 1992. He had suffered from numerous complications of the cancer over the past years.

He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He loved golfing and played softball in the Jackson, Willis and Waterbury, Neb. area. He also enjoyed playing cards.

He is survived by a daughter, Yeshuah Hannah Haimes of Hawaii; a son, Brandon James O'Neill of Fort Collins, Colo.; a daughter, Samantha Jane O'Neill of Ponca; a daughter, Molly Rose O'Neill of Ponca; his father, Frank T. O'Neill of Ponca; five brothers and sisters, Jean Maxfield and her fiancee, Dick Mayer of Dakota Dunes, S.D., Jane and Jim Dillion of Sioux City, Dan and Jacki of Sioux City, Julie Richards and her fiancee, Russ Rasmussen of South Sioux City and Brian and Vicky of Jackson, Neb.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Jeff O'Neill, Randy Dillon, Curt Dillon, Frank O'Neill, Jon Richards and Blake O'Neill. Honorary pallbearers will be Jack O'Neill, Rick O'Neill, Tanner O'Neill, Rudy Norton, Jim Dillon, Dick Mayer, Russ Rasmussen, Jay Sorensen, Chuck Carnell, Terry Potter, Pete Snyder, Jim Langhorst and Skip Bogard.

He was a guy that lit up the room when he walked in

Lillian E. Warren
Former SSC resident

Lillian E. Warren, 83, of Papillion, Neb., formerly of South Sioux City went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ Thursday, Feb. 1, 2007 at a Papillion Care Center.

Services were Monday at the First Presbyterian Church in South Sioux City with the Rev. Stephen S. Niles officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park cemetery.

Lillian was born April 22, 1923, in Omaha, Neb. the daughter of Warner and Helen A. Almquist. She graduated from South High School in Omaha. She was employed with the Board of Education in Omaha. She married Vincil M. "Vince" Warren May 10, 1946 in Omaha. The couple moved to South Sioux City in 1968. Her husband Vince died Sept. 17, 1995, in South Sioux City. She moved to Omaha in 2005 to be near her son.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in South Sioux City.

Survivors include two sons and their wives: Rev. Gary and Sharyn Warren of Bellevue, Neb., Jeffrey and Lisa Warren of Ankeny, Iowa, two daughters: Susan and her husband Ron Christian of Coral Spring, Fla., Carol Boehler of Lincoln, Neb., two sisters: Marian Samples of Omaha, Ruth and her husband John Wise of Atlantic, Iowa, her grandchildren: Kelsey and Kaylee Christian, Jennifer and her husband Brian Avery, Sarah, Jessica and Kimberly Boehler, Jonathan, Grant and Trent Warren, her great granddaughter: Grace Avery.

She was also preceded in death by her parents and two brothers: Carl and Alvin Almquist.

Pallbearers will be: Rev. Gary Warren, Brian Avery, Jonathan Warren, Sarah, Jessica and Kimberly Boehler, Ron and Robert Rapp and Jeb Archer.

Rev. Homer Clements
Former SSC resident

Rev. Homer B. Clements, 84, Lincoln, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2007.

He was born June 27, 1922, in Parks to Clarence Homer and Edna Claire (Baker) Clements. He was a retired United Methodist minister of 56 years and a member of Saint Paul United Methodist Church; Retired Methodist Ministers; Methodist Men; Craftsmen Lodge 314, A.F. & A.M.; 55+ Club; International Geranium Society; Nebraska Wesleyan Alumni Association; Downtown Rotary Club; Lincoln Garden Club; past president, Alliance Mentally Ill; Nebraska Conference United Methodist Church.

Homer was a minister at the Methodist church in South Sioux City for nine years.

Family members include: daughter, son-in-law, Linda and Tom Catlett, Lincoln; sons, daughter-in-law, Glenn R. Clements, Lincoln, Wesley C. Clements, Missoula, Mont., Mark A. and Amber Clements, Sioux Falls, S.D.; sister, brother-in-law, Doris and Marion "Butch" Moore, Arvada, Colo.; nine grandchildren; several great - grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert; grandson, Matthew Aaron Catlett; niece, Edie.

Services were at Saint Paul United Methodist Church, 1144 M St. with the Rev. David Lux and Dr. C. Rex Bevins. Burial was in Benkelman cemetery.

Joan Ann Rippatoe
Former DC resident

Joan Ann Rippatoe, 57, of Waterloo, died Friday, Feb. 2, at Manor Care Health Services.

She was born Oct. 6, 1949 in Sioux City, daughter of Ozell and Barbara Stevens. She married Henry Downs in 1966 and they were later divorced. She married A. J. Rippatoe in 1992.

She was employed as a nurse's aide at Allen Hospital for four years and then with IBP for 12 years.

Survivors include her husband, three sons, Troye E. and Henry E. Downs of Minneapolis, Minn. and Jarvis A. Stevens of Clarinda; six grandchildren, Joi, Angel, Justice, Hyatt, Andrew and Phillip; two sisters, Gloria Winans of Florida; and Cheryl Booker of Minneapolis; two brothers, Tyrone Stevens of Mt. Clemens, Mich. and Doyle Stevens of Sioux City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Henry, Reggie, Perry, Kavin, Gregory and a sister, Carol Booker.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 55 Newell Street, with burial in Dakota City cemetery, Dakota City. Public visitation will be from 4 - 8 p.m. on Friday at Hagarty - Waychoff - Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway and also for an hour before services at the church on Saturday.
