Starlyn Beistline

Stromsburg resident, 59

Starlyn K. Beistline, 59, of Stromsburg died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001, at Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg.

Starlyn was born Sept. 29, 1941, in Stromsburg to Floyd William and Fern Evelyn (Johnson) Lindquist. She attended Stromsburg Public Schools, graduating in 1959. She attended beauty school in Grand Island.

On Nov. 22, 1964, Starlyn was married to Billy Mac Beistline at York. To this union, three children were born. The family resided in numerous places, including York, Lincoln, where Starlyn received her realtor's license, and Sparks, Nev., where they lived for several years.

On Jan. 25, 1993, Starlyn moved to the Midwest Covenant Home where she was a resident until her death.

Starlyn was active in the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Survivors include her husband, Billy of York; two sons, Brian and Cobin, both of York; one brother, Steve (Shirley) Lindquist of Stromsburg; one sister, Rhonda (Ken) Hallquist of Lincoln; one uncle, Ansel Lindquist of Stromsburg; several nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

Starlyn was preceded in death by her parents and one daughter, Meegan.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 14, at 2: 30 p.m. at the Midwest Covenant Home Chapel in Stromsburg, with the Rev. Duane Tweeten officiating. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 13, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg. Interment will be in the Stromsburg cemetery.

Larry Richards

Stromsburg resident, 52

Larry E. Richards, 52, of Stromsburg, died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001 at York General Hospital.

Larry was born Sept. 14, 1948 at Stromsburg to Glenn and Viola (Burgess) Richards. He graduated from Osceola High School in 1966. He was an electrician.

Survivors include his mother, Viola Richards of Stromsburg; three daughters, Shanie Krause of Colorado Springs, Colo., Kimberly Richards of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Christina Richards of Greeley, Colo.; two brothers, Roy Richards of Lincoln and Donald Richards of Warrior, Ala.; five sisters, Glenna (Waldo) Jarmin of Goodland, Kan., Jean (Floyd) Shockey of Lincoln, Karen Nelson of Columbus, Betty (Norman) Fuehrer of San Diego, Calif., and Marla (Mike) Stuhr of Waco. He was preceded in death by his father and son, Troy Eugene Richards.

Services are 10 a.m. Monday at Kepner-Roberts Funeral Home in Osceola with the Rev. Richard Dimond officiating. Burial will be at the Osceola cemetery. Visitation is 9-10 a.m. Monday at Kepner-Roberts Funeral Home.

Kepner-Roberts Funeral Home of Osceola is in charge of arrangements.

Lulu Robson

York resident, 97

Lulu Irene Robson, 97, of York died Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001, at Aurora.

She was born Sept. 19, 1903, at Thayer to Uriah and Loretta May (Earl) Bowersock. Lulu married Lawrence Cecil Robson on May 5, 1920, at York. She worked as a clerk at the J. C. Penney store for over 26 years and was a member of the First Christian Church of York, York Hospital Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary, CWS, Rebekahs and Royal Neighbors.

Survivors include her daughters, Virginia Robson and Rosemary (Kenneth) Rasmussen, all of Rockville; three grandsons, one granddaughter and two great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents; husband; brothers, Allie, Otto, Eugene, Earnest; and sisters, Ryola, Rosie, Belle and Adelia.

Funeral services will be held on Friday at 2 p.m. at the First Christian Church in York with the Rev. David Welch officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood cemetery at York. Memorials may be directed to the First Christian Church. Visitation will begin Thursday afternoon at Metz Mortuary in York which is in charge of arrangements.

Father Charles Gergen

York resident, 78

Father Charles L. Gergen, 78, of York, died Tuesday, April 10, 2001, in Kearney.

He was born June 23, 1922, at Shickley, to William and Marie (Grote) Gergen. He was ordained to Priesthood on April 4, 1948. His priestly service included assignments in Lincoln, Dwight, Paul, Dawson, Arapahoe, Cambridge, Oxford, Lawrence and most recently, St. Joseph's Catholic Church in York.

He is survived by four sisters, Sister Marionita Gergen OSF of Cambellsport, Wis., Florence (Robert) Dondlinger and Theresa (Elmer) Reinsch, both of Shickley, and Loretta (Roger) Davis of Nebraska City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and a sister.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, April 16, in York. Bishop Fabian W. Bruskewitz, Bishop of Lincoln will celebrate the Mass. The priests of the Diocese will concelebrate. Graveside services will be held at 2: 30 p.m., Monday, at St. Mary's cemetery at Shickley. Visitation will be held 1-9 p.m., Saturday, and 1-5 p.m., Sunday, at Metz Mortuary in York. The Rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m., Sunday evening, at St. Joseph's Church. Memorials may be made in care of the family.

Metz Mortuary in York is in charge of arrangements.

Irene Harling

Fairmont resident, 82

Irene Harling, 82, formerly of Aurora, died Wednesday morning, April 11, 2001, at the Fairview Manor in Fairmont.

She was born in Cordova on July 20, 1918, to Thomas and Golda (Bergin) Nielsen. She attended grade school and graduated from Exeter High School.

Irene was married to Lewis C. Harling on Sept. 4, 1937, at Lincoln. They lived in the communities of Fairmont, Exeter, Geneva and Aurora while Lewis worked for The Gas Company. Irene worked for several retail stores over the years. She moved to the Hearthstone in York in February of 1996. Irene spent the last year in Fairview Manor in Fairmont.

She was a member of the Presbyterian U.C.C. of Aurora, T.O.P.S. and the Quilters Guild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and daughter, Kathy Jones, and a brother, Earl Nielsen.

She is survived by her son, Tom (Eleanor) Harling of Fairbury; daughter, Bette (Tom) McConaughey of Lincoln; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 10: 30 a.m., Saturday, April 14, at Higby Mortuary in Aurora. The Rev. Monty Nelson will officiate. Interment will be in the Aurora cemetery. Visitation was held from 3 to 8 p.m., Friday, at Higby Mortuary.

Julia Peterson

York resident, 89

Julia C. Peterson, 89, of York, formerly of Grand Island, died Monday, April 9, 2001, at The Hearthstone Nursing Care Center.

She was born on June 7, 1911, to George and Ida (Foster) Porter at Broken Bow. She grew up and received her education in Broken Bow and graduated from Broken Bow High School in 1929. She attended Hastings College at Hastings and the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colo. She taught kindergarten at Mason City.

She was married to Irwin B. Peterson on May 31, 1936, at Broken Bow after which they made their home in Broken Bow. They moved to Grand Island in 1948 where she was a teen coordinator at the Grand Island YWCA and was Hall County American Red Cross director from 1964 to 1979. She retired in 1979. Her husband preceded her in death in 1989 and she continued to make her home in Grand Island until 1994 when she moved to York to be near her daughter.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. She was past executive director of the Hall County Chapter of the American Red Cross, Central Nebraska Association for Retarded Citizens, Mayor's Committee on the Handicapped and the Grand Island Council of International Visitors. She was also a past member of Grand Island Business and Professional Women, and Chapter EZ of the PEO. She was involved with Citizen Advocacy on the state and local levels. She received numerous civic recognitions.

Survivors include her daughter, Margaret Brink of York; sons, Jon I. Peterson of Lincoln, Neil W. Peterson of Bloomington, Minn., and Richard P. Peterson of Hastings; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Ramona (William) Ptacek of Green Valley, Ariz.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Irwin B. Peterson; four sisters, Adelaide Betz, Roxie Pennington, Helen Williams and Doras Rupert; five brothers, Alfred Porter, Kenneth Porter, Dwight Porter, Harve Porter and George Porter.

Funeral services will be at 10: 30 a.m. Saturday, April 14, 2001, at the First Presbyterian Church in Grand Island with the Rev. Cheryl Lamb officiating. Burial will be in the Grand Island City cemetery, Grand Island. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday with the family receiving friends from 6 to 7: 30 p.m. at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Hall County American Red Cross, First Presbyterian Church or the Association for Retarded Citizens.

Juna VanNess

Bradshaw resident, 76

Juna VanNess, 76, of Bradshaw and formerly of O'Neill, died Thursday, March 15, 2001, at the Community Hospital in Henderson.

She was born Aug. 29, 1924, at Neligh to Clyde and Mae (Keller) Patras. She worked at Avera St. Anthony's Hospital in O'Neill in housekeeping for 9 1/2 years. She worked with the Holt County Sheriff's Department as a correctional officer for 19 years and retired Sept. 23, 1994.

She married Jack VanNess on Aug. 17, 1945, at Grand Island. She attended O'Neill High School, graduating in 1943.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, the O'Neill Eagles Club, the Nebraska Sheriff's Association, the National Arbor Day Foundation and the A.A.R.P.

She is survived by four sons, John (Patsy) VanNess, Gary (Mary) VanNess, Jack and fiance (Debbie) VanNess, all of Bradshaw, and DeWayne (Jan) VanNess of York; one daughter, Nancy (Roger) Upton of Lincoln; 21 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers, two sisters and an infant daughter.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, March 19, at the United Methodist Church in O'Neill, with burial at the O'Neill cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday evening from 6-9 p.m., at Biglin's Mortuary in O'Neill. Rev. Philip Morrison-Sloat will officiate.

Almeda McDuffee

York resident, 102

Almeda Mary McDuffee, 102, of York, died Monday, March 19, 2001 at York.

Services are 2 p.m. Thursday at the Metz Chapel in York with the Rev. Ralph Ford officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood cemetery at York. Memorials may be directed to the Greenwood cemetery. Visitation will begin Wednesday morning.

Dagmar A. Johnson

Dagmar A. Johnson, 94, of Exeter, died Saturday, March 25, 2000 at Friend. Funeral services will be held at 10: 30 a.m., Wednesday, March 29, at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Cordova.

Gerald K. Kreifels

Gerald K. Kreifels, 82, of York, died Sunday, March 26, 2000 in York. Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, March 29, at Metz Chapel in York with Phil Towle officiating.

Edith Scheer

York resident, 90

Edith Scheer, 90, of York, died Friday, March 16, 2001, at York.

She was born near Seward on March 22, 1910, to C. Howard and Flora (Sebastian) Dickinson. She was a 1928 graduate of Seward High School and had attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.

She married Fred Scheer on Aug. 30, 1931, at Seward. They moved to York in the early 1950s.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of York, the York American Legion Auxiliary and the Eastern Star of Seward.

She is survived by nieces and nephews.

Following cremation, burial will take place at the Seward cemetery. There will be no visitation.

Memorials may be directed to the Presbyterian Church of York or Adopt-A-Pet.

Anne Otte

Ulysses resident, 54

Anne Irene Otte, 54, of Ulysses died Friday, April 27, 2001, in Seward.

She was born Feb. 17, 1947, in Osceola. She graduated from Osceola High School in 1965 and from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She was a teacher at Nebraska Evangelical Lutheran High School in Waco. She married Martin Otte on Dec. 26, 1969, at Grace Lutheran Church in Seward.

Survivors include her husband, Martin Otte; sons, Mark (Jennifer) Otte of LaCrosse, Wis., and Thomas Otte of Ulysses; daughters, Mary (Tom) Arens of Graceville, Minn., and Katharina Otte of Ulysses; parents, Lewis and Alice Dunn of Osceola; brothers, Douglas Dunn of Bisbee, Ariz., and Dick (Candy) Dunn of Osceola; sister, Jane (Keith) Peterson of Osceola; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother, C. J. Dunn.

Services were held at 10 a.m., Monday, April 30, 2001, in the Nebraska Evangelical Lutheran High School Gym in Waco with the Rev. Marc Frey officiating. Burial was in St. Paul cemetery at Gresham. Memorials may be sent to Nebraska Lutheran High School in Waco. Volzke Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
