Imogene May

Colorado resident, 82

Imogene E. May, 82, of Denver, Colo., died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, in Denver.

She was born April 30, 1918, at Charleston, to Albert and Emma (Rich) Harms.

Imogene attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and then attended York College where she earned a B.A. degree in English Literature. She taught school for a short while at South Sioux City and in other communities in Nebraska. She worked with the Democratic party, the Girl Scouts, and was an artist. On July 8, 1938, she married Robert F. May.

She is survived by her husband, Robert F. May of Denver; two sons, Robert S. May and Gregory A. May, both of Denver; one daughter, Marcia Rollins of Santa Cruz, Calif.; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Virginia Asher of Omaha and Joann Caughey of York; and one brother-in-law, Howard May of York. She was preceded in death by her parents and one grandson.

Services are 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 10, at the Metz Chapel. Burial will be in the Greenwood cemetery in York. Memorials may be directed to the family. Visitation begins Friday evening. Metz Mortuary in York is in charge of arrangements.

Linda Bailey

McCool resident, 59

Linda L. Bailey, 59, of McCool Junction died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, at York. She was born March 17, 1941, at York to Boyd and Alberta (Klone) Young.

Linda was married to Claude E "Gene" Bailey on May 31, 1959, at McCool Junction. To this union were born three sons. She was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church at McCool Junction where she was the church organist and choir member and she was also a member of the Royal Neighbors. She had been a piano instructor.

Linda was stricken with multiple sclerosis in 1975 and became a resident of the Bethesda Care Center at Exeter in 1982. In March of 2000 she became a resident of The Hearthstone at York.

Survivors include her three sons: Tim (Rebecca) Bailey of McCool Junction, Terry (Sally) Bailey and Kyle (Patricia) Bailey, all of York; and six grandchildren. Also surviving is her father, Boyd Young of York, and sister, Phyllis (Neil) West of McCool Junction. Preceding her in death were her mother, brother, and former husband Gene.

Funeral services will be held on Monday at 10 a.m. at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church at McCool Junction with the Rev. Michelle Olson officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood cemetery at York. Memorials may be directed to the Church or to the M.S. Society. Visitation will begin Saturday morning. Metz Mortuary of York is in charge of arrangements.

Joanne Perry

York resident, 47

Joanne L. Perry, 47, of York died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001, in Lincoln.

She was born April 1, 1953, in Gordon to Noel and Betty Jo (Brooks) Alexander. She graduated in 1971 from Gordon High School and received her bachelor's degree in education in 1977 from Chadron State College.

She married Donald Perry on July 7, 1979, at St. Paul. Joanne taught secondary home economics at McPherson County High School, Tyron; Palmer High School, and O'Neill St. Mary's and substituted in several York County public schools. She was also an assistant junior high volleyball coach at several of the schools. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in York. and the Altar Society.

Survivors include her husband, Don of York; father, Noel Alexander of Gordon; sister, Jeanne (Dennis) Breen of Loveland, Colo.; sister-in-law, Ann (Ken) Kujath of Fairbury; great aunt, Belle Merrill of York; two nephews and a niece.

She was preceded in death by her mother.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 17, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in York. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A rosary will be said at 7 p.m., Friday evening, at Metz Mortuary in York. Visitation will begin Thursday afternoon at Metz Mortuary in York which is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to the church, Knights of Columbus, Madonna Health Services in Lincoln, or the Kidney Foundation.

Berneita Drake

York resident, 77

Berneita J. Drake, 77, of York died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at Omaha. She was born April 2, 1923, at Fullerton to Maurice C. and Hattie B. (Parkinson) Greek and grew up in the Genoa area.

She was a waitress in the York area for a number of years before joining the York Police Department as a Meter Maid serving for 22 years. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Benedict, a member of the Women of the Lutheran Church, the sewing circle at Benedict, and the VFW Auxiliary of York.

On April 26, 1940, she was married to Robert E. Drake at Central City.

She is survived by her husband, Robert of York; two sons, Rod (Barbara) Drake of Valley, and Rick (Cindy) Drake of Benedict; one daughter, Sharon (Jerry) Manning of Grand Island; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Maurice (Esther) Greek of LaPort City, Iowa, and one sister, Opal Capstick of Waterloo, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, David; four brothers and one sister.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in York with the Rev. Dick Woolard and Leroy Hoyer officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood cemetery in York. Memorials may be directed to the family. Visitation begins after 5 p.m. on Wednesday. Metz Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Helen Sanderson

Central City resident, 93

Helen Gladys Sanderson, 93, of Central City, died at Litzenberg Long Term Care in Central City on Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001.

She was born on Aug. 22, 1907, near Marquette to Harvey O. and Lily M. (Ellis) King. She grew up in the Marquette area and graduated from Marquette High School in 1925. She received her normal training for teaching and taught for one and a half years in Agate. Helen then went to live with her family in Hastings and worked as a housekeeper.

On Nov. 22, 1928, Helen G. King and Albert P. Sanderson were married in Hastings. They farmed in Hamilton County until their retirement in 1976. At this time, they moved into Central City and lived in their home until 1995 when they moved in to Litzenberg Long Term Care. Albert died on Sept. 13, 1996.

Helen was a member of the United Methodist Church in Central City and had been active in the church circles. She was a member of the County Extension Club and of several card clubs.

Survivors include two daughters, Shirley (Wayne) Davy of Columbus, Virginia (Jack) Wheelock of Linn Cree, Mo.; one son, David (Jean) Sanderson of Hampton; one sister, Dorothy Eoff of Papillion; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband and two brothers, Harold and Roy King.

Services will be held Thursday, Feb. 8, at 10: 30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Central City with the Revs. Keith Davy and Mary McQueen officiating. Burial will be in the Aurora cemetery. Visitation is Wednesday, Feb. 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Solt Funeral Home in Central City. Memorials are suggested to Litzenberg Long Term Care in Central City.

Solt Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Elsie Harrison

Beaver Crossing resident, 81

Elsie B. Harrison, 81, of Beaver Crossing died Thursday, March 1, 2001, at Seward.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10: 30 a.m. Monday, March 5, at the Metz Chapel in York with Ronald Thomke and Loren Spellman officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood cemetery in York. Visitation hours will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday with the family greeting friends and neighbors from 3 to 7: 30 p.m. Sunday. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Ethan Michael Clough

Ethan Michael Clough, infant son of Shawn and Heather (Bartek) Clough of Great Falls, Mont., died at his home in Great Falls on Friday, March 17, 2000. Services were held Wednesday, March 22, at Sunrise Presbyterian Church in Great Falls at 2 p.m.

Dorthy Warnick

Dorthy Warnick, 80, of Stromsburg, died today (Tuesday, April 4, 2000) at Osceola Good Samaritan Nursing Home. Services are pending at Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg.

Opal Dey

Opal L. Dey, 82, of Gresham, died Thursday afternoon, Aug. 17, 2000 at York General Hospital in York.

She was born on a farm near Gresham to Charles L. and Mattie (Heins) Behnken. She graduated from York High School in 1936 and was united in marriage to Loran J. Dey on Sept. 29, 1939 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Gresham. Throughout the course of her life, Opal worked as a production worker for Becton, Dickinson and Company in Columbus, NE for 14 years and operated an upholstery shop in Gresham for a number of years. The majority of her life was spent as a homemaker and farm wife on their farm near Gresham. Opal was a longtime member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church at Gresham.

Survivors include four sons: Stewart A. (and his wife, Nancy) Dey of Lincoln, Steven C. (and his wife, Judy) Dey of Gresham, Brian K. (and his wife, Melissa) Dey of Lincoln, and Jeffrey M. Dey (and his friend, Garnet) of Seward; eight grandchildren: Joe and Rick Dey, Kim Thieman, Teri Petersen, Stephanie and Amy Dey, and Ben and Megan Dey; 11 grandchildren; two sisters: Dorothy O'Brien of York and Luwana (and her husband, Don) Funk of Seward; two brothers: Wayne (and his wife, Dorothy) Behnken of Columbus, and Dale (and his wife, Donna) Behnken of York.

She was preceded in death by her parents (Charles L. and Mattie Heins Behnken); her husband (Loran J. Dey on Nov. 8, 1994), and one sister (Ruth Behnken).

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 21, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Gresham with Pastor Timothy A. Prince officiating. Interment will be in Cedar Lawn cemetery at Gresham. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. on Saturday, Aug, 19, and 1-9 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 20, at the Lewis Funeral Chapel in York, and then at the church in Gresham on Monday, Aug. 21, from 8: 30 a.m. until service time. Memorials may be made in care of the family.

Mary Dwyer

Mary Dwyer, age 89, of York died Thursday, April 13th, 2000 at York. Funeral services are scheduled for 10: 30 a.m. Tuesday at the Metz Chapel with Father James Divis officiating.

Roger K. Heers

Roger K. Heers, 76, York resident, died Wednesday, April 12, 2000 at Lincoln. Funeral services will be held Monday, April 17, at 2 p.m. at the Faith Lutheran Church in York with the Rev. Art Schauer officiating.

Allen A. Jensen

Allen A. Jensen, 78, of Grand Island, died Thursday, April 13, 2000 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Grand Island. Services are 11 a.m. Monday at St. Leo's Catholic Church with the Rev. Jack Rademacher officiating.

Walter W. Sackschewsky

Walter W. Sackschewsky, 95, of Thayer, died Friday, April 14, 2000 at York. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, April 17, at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in York with the Rev. Lee Seetin officiating.

Hattie Steinberg

Hattie M. Steinberg, 84, of Bloomington, Minn., and formerly of York, was born April 23, 1916 in York and passed away July 31, 2000.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Effie and Al Steinberg, and grandmother, Hattie Conway.

Survivors include cousins, Delores Coffin of Denver, Colo., Tom (Barb) Coffin of Lincoln and Irene Reigle of Madison; goddaughter Dana Roberts of Bloomington; and many friends.

Hattie grew up in Bradshaw, completed high school in York, and received her teaching degree from Kearney State Teacher's College in 1937. She received the MA in journalism from the University of Minnesota in 1963.

She taught at Lincoln Southeast High School from 1956-1962 before moving to Minnesota where she taught at St. Louis Park High School (SLPHS) from 1962-1975. Her former students were very important to her and she continued to follow their successes and enjoyed both their company and correspondence throughout her life.

She was actively involved with the Journalism Education Association and the National Scholastic Press Association. In 1988 she was given the Lifetime Achievement Award for her contributions to student journalism from the Minnesota High School Press Association. In 1980 she was the first recipient of Taylor Publishing Company's Yearbook Adviser of the Year.

She spent her retirement traveling the world on trips that included African safaris and bicycling through Holland. She was an avid sports fan, supporting the University of Nebraska football team and the Minnesota Vikings. She also continued to educate high school students by conducting yearbook critiques at summer workshops.

Surrounded by family and friends, she felt her 80th birthday party was a celebration of her life. She held fond memories of that day.

Graveside services will be held on Friday, Aug. 4, at 2 p.m. at the Greenwood cemetery at York. No visitation. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society.

Derek Pagel

Derek David Pagel, three-month-old son of Gary and Patricia Pagel of Marshall, Minn., died at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn., on Saturday, July 29, 2000.

He was born in Marshall, Minn., on April 24, and was baptized on April 25. He had an operation on his heart two days after his birth.

He is survived by his parents; a sister, Haley Christine of Marshall, Minn.; grandparents, Duane and Marian Pagel of Marshall, Minn., and Gale and Gloria Tonniges of Friend; great-grandparents Myrtle Burhoop of York and Henry Schroeder of Marshall, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Walter and Elda Pagel and Nora Schroeder; great-grandparents, Constance and Eldon Stone Sr. and Elmer Tonniges; and two uncles, Robert and Gregory Pagel.

Funeral services will be held at 10: 30 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 1, at the Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Marshall, and burial will be at the Marshall cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-9 p.m., Monday, July 31, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the Hamilton-Birk Funeral Home. Visitation will continue at the church on Tuesday, one hour prior to the funeral service.

Emma "Jeanne" Anderson

Emma "Jeanne" Anderson, 69, of Phoenix, Ariz., formerly of the Polk area, died at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

She was born July 9, 1931, in Hastings to Lyman and Anna (Koenig) Aker. She attended school in Harvard through the sixth grade and then graduated from Polk High School in 1948. After graduation, she attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.

On March 10, 1951, she married Eric LeRoy "Lee" Anderson in Lincoln. They lived in Polk until he joined the service in 1952. They lived in New Jersey and New York until he was discharged. They then moved to her family farm near Harvard, which they operated for two years. They later farmed near Polk until 1971. While living in the Polk area, she worked for a bank in York, for the Nebraska Natural Gas Company and for the State Fish and Wildlife Department in Grand Island. In 1971, they moved to Atoka, Okla., where they owned and operated the Thunderbird Lodge Motel for 18 years. She returned to school at this time and received her bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant, Okla. She worked for the Bureau of Reclamation in Oklahoma for three years and then transferred to California. They lived in Los Angeles and San Bernadino for two years, where she continued to work at the Bureau. For the past nine years, they lived in St. Paul, Minn., where she worked for the Corp of Engineers and also for a short time in Germany. They moved to Phoenix in June, 1999.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Polk, American Legion Auxiliary Post 160 and received recognition for over 20 years employment with the United States Government.

She is survived by her husband, Eric "Lee" of Phoenix, Ariz.; three daughters, Tonya of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Lisa and Jill, both of Phoenix, Ariz.; and one granddaughter, Tiffany Jeanne.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Lorna Wenta and Mary Rice; and two brothers, Louis and Bill Aker.

Memorial services will be Thursday, Aug. 3, at 10: 30 a.m., at the United Methodist Church in Polk with Rev. Dr. Jeffery Thurman officiating. Interment will be at the Polk cemetery.
