Ensie Hanson

Stromsburg resident, 92

Ensie Lovus Hanson, 92, of Stromsburg died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, at Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg.

Ensie was born Jan. 16, 1909, on a farm near Osceola to Alfred and Hannah (Johnson) Erickson. She was baptized in the First Baptist Church in Stromsburg. She attended Stromsburg schools.

On March 21, 1933, Ensie was married to Reynold Kermit Hanson of Stromsburg. To this union, two sons were born. After their marriage, Ensie joined the Evangelical Covenant Church where she was active in Covenant Women, sang in the choir, taught primary Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. During her time in Osceola, she served on the district school board, was a leader of 4-H clubs, and served eight years on the Polk County Extension Board. While living in Osceola and Stromsburg, Ensie worked as a nursing assistant and served at the Midwest Covenant Home from 1949 to 1990.

Ensie received the KOLN-KGIN TV Sunshine Award, was a Smorgasbord committee chairman and worked many years in the Res-Q-Shoppe.

Survivors include two sons, Alfred (Carolyn) of Osceola and Herbert (Sue) Hanson of Stromsburg; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Philip Erickson of Stromsburg; one sister, Selma Smith of Ephrata, Wash.; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Reynold; her parents; three sisters, Ruth, Josephine and Rose; and one brother, Lloyd Erickson.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 17, at 10: 30 a.m. at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Stromsburg with Pastor Bob Johnson officiating. Visitation will be held Friday, Feb. 16, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg. Interment will be in the Stromsburg cemetery.

Lila Weiss

York resident, 78

Lila Weiss, 78, of York died Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2000, at York. Funeral services will be held on Friday, Nov. 3, at 10: 30 a.m. at the Faith Lutheran Church in York. A complete funeral notice will appear in Thursday's News-Times. Metz Mortuary of York is in charge of arrangements.

Marie Henderson

Marie M. Henderson, 91, of Stromsburg died Monday, Sept. 25, at the York General Hospital in York. Services are pending.

Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg is in charge of arrangements.

Carl Wilson

York resident, 86

Carl Wilson, 86, of York died Thursday, Nov. 2, 2000, in Fairmont. Services are pending at Metz Mortuary in York.

York resident, 78

Margaret (Peggy) Foland, 78, of York, died today (Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001) at York. Services are pending at Metz Mortuary in York.

Paul Thomas

Denver, Colo., resident, 39

Paul Arnold Thomas, 39, of Denver, Colo., died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Thomas of York. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Leona Peters

Henderson resident, 64

Leona Peters, 64, of Henderson died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at Bryan Hospital in Lincoln.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 27, at Bethesda Mennonite Church in Henderson. The Rev. Weldon Martens will officiate. Interment will be in Bethesda cemetery near Henderson. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m., Friday, at Higby Mortuary in Aurora and one hour prior to service at the church.

Francis John Jindra

Francis John Jindra, 67, of Central City, died on Thursday, July 12th at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City. Services are Monday, July 16th at 10: 30 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Central City with Father Nelson Newman officiating. Burial will be in the Central City cemetery. Visitation is Sunday, July 15th from 5 to 7 p.m. at the church with a 7: 00 p.m. Vigil Service. Memorials are suggested to the Long Term Care in Central City.

Francis was born on September 2, 1933 in Dwight to Frank M. and Mary T. (Crha) Jindra. His family lived in Dwight and Rogers and Francis attended rural Butler County School. In 1944, they moved to Central City and Francis graduated from Central City High School in 1951. After graduation, he worked for Carrol Christensen and then entered the military and served during the Korean War. After being discharged from the service, Francis returned to Nebraska and farmed in Belgrade from 1957 to 1958. In 1959, he joined in partnership with his father and brother, Gerald, and farmed with them in the Central City area. Francis and Gerald farmed together until Francis health failed. He had been living at Long Term Care in Central City.

Francis was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Central City and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed visiting museums, going to antique sales, fishing, and collecting tractors and caps.

Survivors include two brothers - Gerald Jindra of Central City and Joseph Jindra of Tacoma, Washington; one sister - Dorothy and husband David Bogus of Farwell; five nieces and five nephews; two uncles - Stan Crha of Bellflower, CA and Ed Jindra of Schuyler; five aunts - Ann Parolek and Rose Knepper both of Schuyler; Geraldine Jisa of Shelby, Antonette Seaman and Carolyn Backens both of Tomah, Wisconsin.

Francis was preceded in death by his father in 1980 and his mother in 1996.

James "Jim" Stanislav

James "Jim" Stanislav, 73, of Central City, died on Monday, July 9th at St. Francis Hospital in Grand Island. Memorial services will be Wednesday, July 11th at 10 a.m. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home with Rev. Joy Savage officiating. Interment will be in the Central City cemetery.

Mr. Stanislav was born on November 24, 1927 at Linwood in Butler County to Joe and Emma (Johannes) Stanislav. The family lived in Linwood until 1939 when they moved to Central City. Mr. Stanislav attended rural Butler County and rural Merrick County Schools. After completing his education, he worked with his father on the farm and then entered the United States Army. From February 7, 1947 until July 15, 1948, he served at Fort Ord, California. After his discharge from the Army, Mr. Stanislav returned to Central City. On March 26, 1950, James Stanislav and Betty L. Larson were united in marriage in Central City. Mr. Stanislav worked for Hord and Sons, Martson Ag, and Cargill all in Central City. He retired from Cargill in 1990.

He enjoyed gardening, yard work, making crafts from wood, camping, polka music, and garage sales. Jim played the drums and accordion for their family polka band and later played the drums for local bands. Jim was also a member of the American Legion Post #6 in Central City.

Survivors includes his wife Betty of Central City; his mother Emma Nielsen of Central City; one son Rich and wife Mary Stanislav of Central City; two daughters-Sheila and husband Walt Johnson of Colorado Springs and Janette and husband Tom Reifenrath of Lincoln; two brothers Walt and wife Beulah Stanislav of Lincoln and Joe and wife Rosie Stanislav of Aurora; one sister Evie Power of Central City; 9 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father in 1954.

Geneva Carter

Geneva N. Carter, age 97, of Silver Creek, died at the Community Long Term Care in Genoa, Monday evening July 23rd. Graveside memorial services will be Saturday, August 11th at 2 p.m. at the Silver Creek cemetery with Rev. Beverly Minor officiating. Memorials are suggested to the Long Term Care in Genoa or the Silver Creek United Methodist Church. Solt Funeral Home in Central City is in charge of arrangements.

Geneva Naomi Carter was born on December 30, 1903, in Merrick County, to Eugene and Dolly (Hartman) Finecy. She attended school in Merrick County and married George Love Carter on December 20th, 1926 on a bridge between Polk County and Merrick County. Geneva and George farmed near Silver Creek. George died in 1977, and Geneva continued living on the family farm until moving to the Community Long Term Care in Genoa in 1996.

Geneva was a member of the Fairview Methodist Church of Silver Creek where she was a long time organist. She was very active on the Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital Board and a self-taught artist.

Survivors include one brother, Cedric Finecy of Osceola, daughter-in-law Katherine Carter of Central City, four grandchildren; Mary Lou Van Diest and husband Brian of Earlham, IA, Fred George Carter and wife Jeana of Dallas, TX, Damon Carter of Durango, CO and Brett Carter of Brawley, CA and two great-grandchildren Rhiannon Van Diest and Katrina Van Diest both of Earlham, IA.

She was preceded in death by her husband George in 1977, two sons Gail Dean and Lenis Gene, one grandson Justin Carter and several brothers and sisters.

Anthony "Tony" Koenig

Anthony "Tony" Koenig, 45, of Englewood, Colorado, died unexpectedly Saturday, October 20, 2001, in Walden, Colorado. Memorial services will be Saturday, October 27th at 11: 00 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church of the Covenant in Englewood, Colorado. Graveside services will be on Thursday, November 1, 2001, at 11: 00 a.m. at the Central City cemetery with Ellen Campbell officiating. Solt Funeral Home in Central City is in charge of local arrangements.

Tony was born in Abilene, Texas, on April 24, 1956 to John and June (Kirby) Koenig. He received his education at schools in Texas, Oklahoma, Mississippi, and Gillette, Wyoming where he graduated from high school in 1974. He attended the University of Nebraska at Omaha and received his degree in Engineering in 1979. Anthony Koenig and Janet Prochaska were united in marriage on December 22, 1979, the same day they both graduated from college, in Omaha. They moved to Green River, WY for a short time where Tony was employed with Petroleum Production Equipment Services before moving to Englewood, Colorado. In Englewood, he was presently an Independent Contractor working for Lynch Management Services.

Tony was a member of IADC and SPE. Among his hobbies were ATV’s, motorcycles, woodworking, and fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Janet Koenig of Englewood; three children-Sydney, Evan, and Jesse Koenig at home; his parents John and June Koenig of Green River, WY; one sister Kathaleen and husband Rod Rathbun, of Omaha; and parents-in-law Jay and Billie Ruth Proschaska Gee of Central City.

Velma Sandell

Velma I. Sandell, 88, of Polk, died at Bryan LGH East in Lincoln on Wednesday, October 3, 2001. Services will be Saturday, October 6th at 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Polk with Rev. Roger Burke officiating. Visitation is Friday, October 5th from 5 to 8 p.m. at Solt Funeral Home in Polk. Burial is in the Lindale cemetery near Polk. Memorials are suggested to the Gideon’s International or the Polk Senior Center.

Velma was born on October 7, 1912, in Valley County to Charles R. and Grace I. (Gustafson) Leach. She grew up in the Hamilton County and Polk County area, and graduated from York High School in 1930. After graduation, she taught for two years at District #74 in Hamilton County and one and a half years in Valley County. On March 25th, 1934, Velma I. Leach and Elwood M. Sandell were united marriage at her parent’s farm in Hamilton County. After their marriage, Velma and Elwood made their home in the Polk area where they farmed. Mr. Sandell died in January of 1999 and Velma moved to Lincoln later that year.

Velma is a member of the First Baptist Church in Polk, she served in the Sunday School as the treasurer and as a teacher, and belonged to the Mission Circle of the church. She was also a charter member of the Gideon Auxiliary and enjoyed reading.

Survivors include one son Kendall and wife Cindy Sandell of Polk; three daughters-Mary Lou Sandell and Carmen Sandell both of Lincoln; and Joan and husband Jerry Jones of LaVista; two brothers-Kenneth and wife Gwen Leach of Ord; and Dale and wife Ernestine Leach of Loveland, Colorado; four grandchildren-Kristina, Kerri, Shawn, and Ryan; and one great grandson-Jeffrey Tuzzio; sister-in-law Mamie Leach of Grand Island; and brother-in-law Robert Tupper of Purcell, Oklahoma.

Velma was preceded in death by her husband, one brother-Virgil Leach; and one sister-Blanche Tupper.

Betty Arlene Glause

Betty Arlene Glause, 71, of Chapman, died at her home on Wednesday, Dec. 5. Services will be Saturday, December 8th at 10: 30 a.m. at Zion United Methodist Church near Archer with Rev. Rich Savage officiating. Burial will be in the Archer Evangelical Community cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, December 7th from 5 to 8 p.m. at Solt Funeral Home in Central City.

Betty was born on December 18, 1929, in Palmer to Albert G. and Minnie M. (Garrett) Blauhorn. She grew up in the Palmer area, but lived in Central City with the Walter Raecke family while attending high school. She graduated from Central City High School in 1947. After completing her education, Betty worked for Commercial National Bank in Grand Island for several years. On June 4, 1950, Betty Arlene Blauhorn and John H. Glause were united in marriage at Zion United Methodist Church near Archer. They lived by Worms for several years before moving to their present home near Chapman where they farmed.

Betty was a lifelong member of the Zion United Methodist Church where she had taught bible school and Sunday School; was a member of United Methodist Women and held many offices, and she also served as church organist. Betty was a member of the neighborhood birthday club, the Prairie Creek Improvement Extension Club, and she had been a 4-H leader. Betty enjoyed her yard and plants, music, and crocheting.

Betty is survived by her husband John of Chapman; one daughter-Sharon K. and her husband Bruce Kleint of Grand Island; two sons-Craig and wife Pat Glause of Chapman and Steve and wife Beckie Glause of Chapman; two sisters-Winona and Buddy Tuttle of Aurora; Fern and Alton Jacobsen of Hastings; eight grandchildren-Todd Kleint, Travis Kleint, Justin Kleint, Amy Glause, Shelley Glause, Branden Glause, Chad Glause, and Jenny Glause; and 5 great granddaughters.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Albert Emgarten

Albert Emgarten 91 years of age, of Central City, died on Friday, November 9, 2001 at the Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital Long Term Care in Central City. Funeral services will be conducted from the chapel of the Solt Funeral Home, on Tuesday, November 13th, at 2: 00 P.M. with the Sister Mary Arie officiating. Burial will be in the Central City cemetery. Visitation will be at the Solt Funeral Home on Monday, November 12th from 5: 00 to 8: 00 P.M.

A memorial fund has been established in Albert’s memory. Condolences may be sent to the Emgarten family at www.soltfh.com.

Albert Edward August was born December 12, 1909, in Ceresco, Nebraska, one of eleven children of William N. and Elizabeth (Gilster) Emgarten. He attended school at District # 37. On May 25, 1932 he married Dorothy Everett in Central City. Albert worked several area jobs before entering the US Army on September 29, 1943 at Ft Crook, Nebraska and was honorably discharged on September 21, 1945 at Ft Levenworth, Kansas. He served in the North Apennies and PO Valley. Where he received a good conduct medal.

Albert moved to Central City in 1919 and farmed all his life. Dorothy and Albert assisted many families raise their children who they loved very much. He enjoyed cats, dogs and his farm animals.

Albert was a member of the American Legion Post #6 of Central City.

He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy on January 18, 2001, four brothers and seven sisters.

The Solt Funeral Home of Central City is in charge of arrangements.

Carl Chader

Carl Yngve Chader, 83, of Aurora formerly of the Hordville area, died at Hamilton Manor in Aurora on Tuesday, November 20, 2001. Services will be Wednesday, November 28th at 2: 00 p.m. at the Mamre Evangelical Free Church near Marquette with Rev. Don Olson officiating. Burial will be in the Mamre Church cemetery. Visitation is Tuesday, November 27th from 5 to 8 p.m. at Solt Funeral Home in Central City.

Carl was born on June 21, 1918 near Hordville to Otto Seth and Ingeborg (Johnson) Chader. He attended District 94 school in Hamilton County and graduated from Hordville High School. Carl then attended Nebraska Central College and went on to teach two years at District 74 and one year at District 94. In 1940, he went to California and worked for Lockheed for two years before entering the U.S. Army Air Corp on November 5, 1942. Carl served as an airplane mechanic and navigator until his discharge on December 16, 1945. Carl returned to Nebraska and farmed in Hamilton County until his retirement in 1995.

Carl was a member of the Mamre Evangelical Free Church and the Modern Woodman of Hordville. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, and hunting. Carl faithfully cared for his mother until her death.

Survivors include one brother-Evvard Chader of Central City; one sister-in-law-Eileen Chader of Hampton, one brother-in-law-Arnold Jensen of Aurora; five nieces-Opal Christensen of Lincoln; Colene Andersen of Omaha; Pauline Quiring of Hampton; Adell Woodson of Bena, VA; and Tena Comer of Hordville; and one nephew-Harold Chader of Minneapolis, MN.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters-Deborah Jensen and Vivian Chader; one brother-Delane Chader; one niece Sandra Schnabel and one nephew Terry Chader.
