Fern Polzkill

Fern D. Polzkill, 82, of Central City died on Thursday, November 15th at the Central City Care Center. Services will be Monday, November 19th at 10: 30 a.m. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City with Curtis Williford officiating. Visitation is Sunday, November 18th from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Fullerton cemetery on Monday at 11: 45 A.M. Fern was born on August 31, 1919 in Fullerton to Bernard William and Leota M. (Meyer) Polzkill. She grew up and received her education in Nance County. Fern lived her entire life in the Fullerton, Marquette, and Central City area. She worked for Tranburger’s Variety Store in Fullerton for many years, the Cold Storage in Central City, and for Clark Bakery in Central City. She also worked in private homes. Fern retired in the late 1970’s and continued to live in Central City. She moved into the Central City Care Center in February of 2001.

Fern enjoyed working crossword puzzles, was an avid walker, and will be remembered by her family for her quick minded wittiness.

Survivors include one brother-Paul Polzkill of Central City; one sister-Margaret and Harley Riley of Everett, Washington; two sisters-in-law-Donna and Henry Mate of Central City and Phyllis Hansen of Alma; 13 nieces and nephews-Bob and Jeane Polzkill of Central City; Karen and Dennis Dunn of Lincoln; Ben and Claire Polzkill of Denver; Diana and Curtis Williford of Silver Creek; Rhonda and Barry Blue of Omaha; Bill and Gloria Polzkill of Grand Island; Carol Polzkill of Alma; Delbert and Deb Polzkill of Kingsburg, CA; Rick and Margaret Polzkill of Papillion; Doug Polzkill of Alda; and Kenneth and Cindi Riley of Oak Harbor, Washington; Kevin Riley of Kent, Washington; and Kathy and Jeff Adams of Oak Harbor, Washington.

Fern was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers-Bernard and John Polzkill.

Frank Tagge

Frank L. Tagge, 65, of Central City died at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital on Monday, Nov. 19th. Services will be Friday, Nov. 23rd at 10: 00 a.m. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City with Ellen Campbell officiating. Burial will be in the Westlawn cemetery in Grand Island. Visitation is Thursday, Nov. 22 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the family. Condolences may be sent to the Tagge family at www.soltfh.com.

Frank was born on April 16th, 1936 in Grand Island to Rudolph "Rudy" and Helen (Cain) Tagge. He graduated from Grand Island Senior High School in 1954. After completing high school, he worked for two years before entering the military. Frank enlisted in the US Army on February 17, 1956 and honorably discharged on February 16, 1959.

On December 6, 1958, Frank L. Tagge and Gloria Rieflin were united in marriage in Grand Island. Frank worked for Brown Auto in Grand Island and was transferred to Central City. He then purchased and operated Brown Auto in Central City. After selling the business, he worked for Tonniges Chevrolet in Osceola and then Grosshans, Inc. in Central City. Frank retired in 1998.

Frank was a member of the American Legion Post 6 in Central City, the Fraternal Order of Eagle’s, and the Platt-Duetsche Society in Grand Island. He enjoyed sports of all kinds, reading, fishing, boating, camping, and decorating for holidays.

Survivors include his wife, Gloria of Central City; two sons-Jeffrey Tagge of Apache Junction, AZ and Jon Tagge of Central City; one daughter-Jill and husband Rick Hahne of Hastings; three brothers-Jim Tagge of Grand Island; Robert and Peg Tagge of Denver, CO; and Gerald and Jean Tagge of Grand Island; three grandchildren-Tamara Anne Tagge; Kelli Christine Hahne, and Jake Jeffrey Hahne.

Frank was preceded in death by his parents and one brother-Donald Tagge.

Dale King

Dale E. King, 71 years of age of Central City, died unexpectedly at Bryan LGH West in Lincoln, NE Friday evening November 9, 2001. Funeral services will be conducted from the Solt Funeral Home chapel, Wednesday, November 14th, at 10: 30 A.M. with the Rev. Dean Entrekin officiating. Burial will be in the Central City cemetery. Visitation will be at the Solt Funeral Home on Tuesday, November 13th from 5: 00 to 8: 00 P.M. A memorial fund has been established in Dale’s memory. Dale Eugene King was born on July 2, 1930 in Merrick County to Ralph and Inez (Farlee) King. He attended school in Central City where he graduated with the class of 1949. Dale worked for Percy and Ralph Hensley and Don Randall before entering the service. He married Betty Jane Watkins of Central City on February 10, 1952. Dale entered the Korean Conflict in1952 and was honorably discharged in 1953. Dale farmed in the Archer area until 1991 when he retired. He started driving a bus for the Central City Schools in 1990 and was getting ready to bring the Central City Band members home from the State Volleyball meet when he died. Driving the school bus was one of the things he enjoyed very much.

Dale was a member of the First Christian Church of Central City. A member of the American Legion Post #6, Lone Tree Lodge #36 A.F. & A.M., Arbor Chapter #200 Order of the Eastern Star all of Central City.

Survivors enclude: his wife Betty of Central City, children; Elton King of Central City, Marilyn Catlett and husband Terry of Central City, Marcia Cockerill and husband Mark of Spalding, NE, Carolyn Souhrada of El Cajon, CA and David King and wife Devon of Central City, his mother, Inez King of Central City, twelve grandchildren and one sister Darlene Richards and husband Dennis of Loup City, NE. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Jocelyn, father Ralph and one brother Donald.

The Solt Funeral Home of Central City, NE is in charge of arrangements.

Hazel Dittmer

Hazel H. Dittmer, 99, of Clarks, died on Wednesday, November 21st at Long Term Care in Central City. Services will be Monday, November 26th at 2: 00 p.m. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City with Pastor Valjean Warman officiating. Visitation is Monday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Clarks cemetery.

Hazel was born on June 1, 1902 in Fairfield, Iowa to Frank L. and Jennie (Dana) West. When she was a young child, she moved with her family to the Clarks, Nebraska area. She attended District 25 School, graduated from Clarks High School in 1921 and attended Kearney Normal Training for one year. Hazel taught for two years in rural country schools. On March 1, 1923, Hazel West and Fritz Dittmer were united in marriage in Central City. They made their home in the Clarks area where they farmed until retiring. They then moved into Clarks. Mr. Dittmer died on September 9, 1978. Hazel continued to live in Clarks until moving to Central City to live with her daughter. In September, she had moved into Long Term Care in Central City.

Hazel enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, and raising her chickens.

Survivors include one son-Kenneth and Delores Dittmer of Clarks, one daughter-Wilma Didier of Central City; one sister-Mary Burruss of Clarks; 7 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; and 10 great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband and one grandson, Larry Didier.

Leo Haith

Leo G. Haith, 81, of Central City, died on Tuesday, December 18th at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island. Services are Saturday, December 22nd at 2: 00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Central City with Rev. Joy Savage officiating. Visitation will be Friday, December 21st from 5 to 8 p.m. at Solt Funeral Home in Central City. Burial will be in the Central City cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the American Legion Baseball Program or the United Methodist Church in Central City.

Leo was born on March 2, 1920 in Auburn, Nebraska to George T. and Della Mae (Miller) Haith. He was raised in Auburn and graduated from Auburn High School in 1939. After graduation, he worked on the barges on the Missouri River before entering the US Navy. Leo served in World War II aboard the USS Crescent City. On January 20, 1939, Leo G. Haith and Donna Mae Newton were united in marriage in Auburn. After his discharge from the military, he returned to Auburn and opened Haiths Service Station. In 1946, they moved to Central City. Leo owned and operated Haith Motor Company. He also operated the Central City ambulance service for 26 years. In November of 1962, Norma Lee Gillan and Leo Haith were married . She worked with him in their business. They retired in 1993 and Norma died on January 10, 1997. Leo continued to live in Central City after his retirement and on October 23, 1997, he was united in marriage with Marie McMahon-Gee.

Leo was a member of the United Methodist Church in Central City; a fifty year member of the Masonic Lodge; he was a member of the Clarks VFW; American Legion Post 6 in Central City and the 40 and 8 Club. Leo loved horses, watching all youth sports events, and American Legion Baseball. He was awarded the Service to Mankind Award given by the Sertoma Club.

Survivors include his wife Marie of Central City; his children-Charlene (Paul) Page of Broken Bow; Leo G. Haith, Jr. of Valley; William (Deb) Beck of Medford, OR; Ruthie (John) Carrington of St. Louis; Deborah Haith of Bellevue; Deon Haith of Milwaukee, WI; Leon (Nancy) Haith of Omaha; Toria (Kent) Clausen of Central City; and Georgia (J.R.) Osbon of North Platte; one brother- Carl (Margaret) Haith of Plattsmouth; two sisters-Gladys Thystrup of China Springs, TX; and Lucile "Billie" Barnes of Fountain Valley, CA; five step-daughters - Diane (Robert) Evers of Gilbert, AZ; Rebecca (Dennis) Sealey of Seattle, WA; Hyla (Dennis) McLean of Mesa, AZ; Barbara "Bobbi" (Steve) Seymour of Mobile, Alabama; and Patricia Gee of Chandler, AZ; 11 grandchildren; 13 step grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; 9 step grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

Leo was preceded in death by his wife, Norma; two grandchildren-Jessica Haith and Jacob Erlandson; and two sisters - Cora Lea Nolte and Arline Martinson.

Lorene Johnson

Lorene I. Johnson, 70, of Clarks, died on Thursday, December 13th at Bryan LGH East in Lincoln. Funeral services will be conducted from the United Methodist Church of Clarks, NE on Monday, December 17th, at 2: 00 P.M. with the Rev. Richard Dimond officiating. Burial will be in the Pierce Chapel cemetery of rural Clarks. Visitation will be at the Solt Funeral Home chapel on Sunday, December 16th, from 5: 00 to 7: 00 P.M.

Lorene Irene Hill was born on May 26, 1931, in Oswatomie, Kansas, one of four children of William Otis and Edna Mae (Arnold) Hill. At the age of seven her mother died and she was placed in St. John’s Orphanage, in Windfield, KS, along with one sister and two brothers. A year later she was placed with Herman and Elsie Peters in Harrington, KS, she was later adopted. She attended grade school and high school in Harrington, KS where she graduated with the class of 1949. Lorene worked for several years in reuniting herself with her brothers and sister. Lorene worked as a telephone operator in Beatrice and later transferred to Grand Island in 1953. Lorene married Richard L. Johnson on September 19, 1954, in Central City, NE and made her home north of Clarks where she resided at the time of her death. She worked as a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and in the Thrift Shop in Central City and also worked as a volunteer in the Clarks Elementary School. She enjoyed her family and especially her grandchildren.

Lorene was a member of the United Methodist Church of Clarks. She was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary.

Survivors include, Richard of Clarks, Children; Son, Greg Johnson and his wife Nolyne of Clarks, daughters; Gwen Zegar and husband Dave of Grand Island and Gaelyn Johnson of Hastings, seven grandchildren and one sister Liz Hawkins and husband Tom of Beatrice. She was preceded in death by one son Glen "Charlie" in 1976 and two brothers Fred Scheele and Bill Hill.

Russell "Jim" Jacobi

Russell "Jim" Jacobi, 75 years of age, of Clarks, died at the Christus Spohn Hospital in Corpus Christi, TX on Friday, February 8, 2002. Funeral services will be held at the Chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City on Thursday, February 14th, at 11: 00 A.M. with the President Ronald Spencer of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints officiating. Burial will be in the Clarks cemetery. Visitation will be at Solt Funeral Home on Wednesday, February 13th from 5: 00 to 8: 00 P.M.

Jim was born on April 27, 1926 in Nance County to Albert G. and Hazel L. (White) Jacobi. He attended school in Nance and Merrick Counties. After completing his education, Jim farmed until 1945 when he entered the Merchant Marines. He returned to Clarks to farm before entering the U.S. Army on December 7, 1950 and served in the Korean Conflict in the 32nd Infantry Regiment, Heavy Motor Company, 7th Division. Jim was honorably discharged on September 8, 1952. On November 23, 1953 Russell "Jim" Jacobi and Diane E. Mellor were united in marriage in Salt Lake City. They farmed in Clarks for several years before moving to Omaha where Jim attended Barber School and practiced as a barber for three years in Omaha. They then returned to Clarks and he continued his profession as a barber. Jim became a hog buyer for Clougherty’s Packing and retired from there in 1997.

Jim was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, had served as an elder and was a Sunday School teacher for many years. Jim was a member of the Clarks VFW and was a past commander, the American Legion Post of Silver Creek, he was a past member of the Clarks Village Board, a volunteer fireman, and a volunteer on the emergency unit for Clarks. The AKSARBEN Good Neighbor Award was presented to Jim for his work with the emergency unit. Jim enjoyed gardening, woodworking, meeting friends for morning and afternoon coffee at the Country Corner in Clarks, and especially spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Diane of Clarks; one daughter-Michelle Foss of Lakewood, CO; one son Bill and wife Christy Jacobi and grandchildren Clarissa and Caleb Jacobi of Omaha; one sister-Peggy (Lisle) Mangelsen of Central City; one brother-John Jacobi of Genoa; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister-Jeanette Salyers, and three brothers- Raymond, Marvin, and Merle Jacobi.

June Bessey

June Bessey, 97, of Central City, died on January 3, 2002 in Salem, Oregon. Graveside services are Saturday, January 12th at 11: 00 a.m. at the Central City cemetery with Rev. Joy Savage officiating. Visitation will be Friday, January 11th from 5 to 8 p.m. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City.

June was born on June 10, 1904, in Central City to Joseph R. and Nellie A. (Bollinger) Comstock. She grew up in Central City, received her education here, and lived her entire life in Central City. On June 11, 1933, June Comstock and Orville Bessey were united in marriage. June was a bookkeeper for several businesses in Central City including Woody’s Restaurant for over twenty years. Mr. Bessey died on December 3, 1970. June continued living in Central City, and after leaving her home she lived at Merrick Manor and Long Term Care before going to Oregon in September to be near nieces and nephews.

June was a member of the United Methodist Church in Central City, the Rebekah’s, The Oddfellows, and the D.A.R. June enjoyed crocheting and will be remembered for the many kindnesses she did for people in the community.

Survivors include two nephews Bernard Comstock and Merlyn Gagle; and two nieces Laura Ladd and Patricia Ashford all of Oregon.

June was preceded in death by her husband; two brothers-Karl "Pete" Comstock and Lucius "Bud" Comstock; and two sisters-Lucille Harry and Eleda J. Gagle.

Kenneth W. Holmes

Kenneth Wendall Holmes, 93, of Central City formerly of Chapman, died at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City on Monday, January 28th. Services are Wednesday, January 30th at 2: 00 p.m. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City with Rev. Joy Savage officiating. Burial will be in the Chapman cemetery. Visitation is Wednesday, January 30th from 9 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Kenneth was born on December 31, 1908 at Grant, Nebraska to Anson K. and Eva (Laub) Holmes. His family owned the Grant Tribune. Kenneth attended school in Grant, Nebraska; Aiken, Minnesota, Taylor, Sumner, and Kearney, Nebraska. In 1928, Kenneth graduated from the Kearney Teacher’s College Normal Training. Immediately after graduation from high school, he went to St. Louis, Missouri where he enrolled in the Robertson School of Aviation to fulfill a long time dream of becoming a pilot. The next several years he spent the time barnstorming in Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa; and logging hours in all types of small airplanes and gaining expertise in his profession. He was a member of a group called the "Famous Flyers". In 1939, Kenneth was given his instructors rating and was hired by the P-T Airservice of Hays, Kansas as an instructor for the Civilian Pilot Training Program.

On December 31, 1939 Kenneth W. Holmes and Emily "Jerrie" Arnhold were united in marriage in Stockton, Kansas. Kenneth continued his flight instruction at Hays for several more years. He then was appointed flight examiner for North Central and Northwest Kansas. At the end of WW II, Kenneth went to Cheyenne, Wyoming and worked as an expediter in the United Airlines Modification Center. After completing his work in Cheyenne, Kenneth moved his family to a farm near Odessa where they farmed for seven years. In 1953, they moved to Kearney and helped to care for his parents until their death. In 1959, the family moved to their farm near Chapman, where his grandparents James and Margaret Holmes had homesteaded in 1876. While living in Chapman, Kenneth, Jerrie, and their daughter Pat operated the Fun Times Kiddie Rides. They retired in the mid 1980’s and in 1997 they moved into Central City. Kenneth went to live at the Central City Care Center in 1998.

Kenneth was a member of the First Methodist Church in Kearney and attended the Chapman United Methodist Church. Kenneth enjoyed reading and music. He played the clarinet in high school and for the Kearney municipal bands. He also played the saxophone and at the age of 60, Kenneth learned to play the organ. He continued his love of music throughout his entire life.

Kenneth is survived by his wife, Emily "Jerrie" Holmes of Central City and one cousin, Darrold Laub of Bishop, California.

Harriet Reina Pieper

Harriet Reina Pieper, 86, of Central City, died at Tiffany Square in Grand Island on Thursday, January 24th. Memorial services will be Monday, January 28th at 3: 00 p.m. at the United Congregational Church in Grand Island with Rev. Lonnie Logan officiating. A memorial visitation will be Sunday, January 27th from 4 to 6 p.m. at Solt Funeral Home in Central City. Interment will be in the Central City cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Donor's Choice.

Harriet was born on August 11, 1915 in Loup City to Harry A. and Reina C. (True) Wagner. As a young girl, her family lived in Arcadia, Grand Island, and Minden, and then in Central City where she graduated from Central City High School in 1932. In 1933, Harriet R. Wagner and Herman C. Pieper were united in marriage. They lived in Grand Island, Omaha, Central City, Elwood, and Holdrege. They purchased the grocery store in Harvard and owned and operated it for over twenty years. They returned to Central City in the mid 1980's. Mr. Pieper died on August 21, 1997. In May of 2001, Harriet moved to Tiffany Square in Grand Island.

Harriet was a member of the United Church of Christ. While living in Harvard, she was the first woman in Clay County to serve on the Harvard City Council, she volunteered with the March of Dimes, the P.T.A., and the Harvard Fun Festival. In addition to the love for her family, Harriet loved politics, playing cards, and bingo.

Survivors include her daughter Connie and her husband Norman Baum of Grand Island; seven grandchildren-Michael Birdsong of Central City; Amy and husband Michael Schutte of Juniata; Jay Daniel Owens; Angela and husband Kirby Sidlo of Astoria, Oregon; Chris Baum of Lincoln; David and Andrew Baum both of Grand Island; and five great grandsons.

Harriet was preceded in death by her husband; two sisters-Patsy Rae White and Alberta Gae Wagner; and three grandchildren-Martin Charles, Allison Joy, and Jeffrey Patrick.

Clyde Elmer Clark

Clyde Elmer Clark, 90, of Central City formerly of Hordville, died at Central City Care Center on Sunday, March 31, 2002. Memorial services will be Thursday, April 4th at 1: 00 p.m. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City with Rev. Willis Pauls officiating. Interment will be in the Custer Center cemetery near Broken Bow. Memorials are suggested to the Clyde Clark Headstone Fund.

Clyde was born on May 17, 1911 in Broken Bow to John and Sarah "Sadie" (Cramer) Clark. Clyde received his education in Broken Bow. After completing his education, Clyde drove truck for over fifty five years, many of these years were spent with Arrow Trucking owned by the Pirnie Brothers in Broken Bow. During his years driving truck, he traveled all over the United States. After retiring in the early 1980’s, Clyde moved to Grand Island. When his home was destroyed by the tornado, he moved to Hordville to be closer to his sister. In 1999, Clyde moved into the Care Center in Central City.

Clyde is survived by several first cousins including Richard Cramer of Stromsburg.

Clyde was preceded in death by one sister-Vi Babcock in 1995 and one brother-Henry Clark in 1944.

Connie Jo Schenk

Connie Jo Schenk, 55, of Central City, died on Thursday, February 13 at Central City Care Center. Services will be Monday, February 17th at 2: 00 p.m. at Solt Funeral Home in Central City with Rev. Dean Entrekin officiating. Burial will be in the Bureau cemetery by Pierce Chapel Church near Clarks. Visitation is Sunday, February 16th from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.soltfh.com.

Connie was born on September 5, 1947 in Hamburg, Iowa to Floyd A. and Edna I. (Fullington) Belle. She grew up in Hamburg and graduated from Hamburg High School in 1965. After her graduation, she then attended the Lincoln School of Commerce. On August 2, 1969 Connie Jo Belle and Fred G. Schenk were united in marriage in Central City. They made their home in Central City and for many years Connie babysat out of her home. Connie also worked at the Westgate in Central City for about ten years, for the Hush Puppies Shoe Store in Grand Island for two years, and then for Cabella’s. Due to failing health, she was forced to quit working about two years ago.

Connie is a member of the Christian Church in Central City. She enjoyed embroidery work and going to the horse races. Her greatest love was for her family, spending time with her grandsons, and helping care for her mother.

Connie is survived by her husband, Fred, of Central City; her mother, Edna Belle of Central City; one son-Michael Schenk of Grand Island; one daughter-Kim and Bill Jackson of Aurora, two grandsons-Joseph and Patrick Jackson; an aunt-Sylvia Bohl of Grand Island; and sister-in-law Darlene Belle of Sandy, Oregon.

Connie was preceded in death by her father, one brother-Carrol Belle, and one granddaughter-Stephanie Jackson.

LoAnn C. Roach

LoAnn Carol Roach, 57, of Central City, died at her home on Saturday, April 19, 2003. Services will be Tuesday, April 22nd at 10: 00 a.m. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City with Ellen Campbell officiating. Burial will be in the Central City cemetery. Visitation is Monday, April 21st from 5: 00 to 8: 00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Merrick Foundation in memory of LoAnn. LoAnn was born on November 13, 1945, in Grand Island to William and Milda L. (Reher) Muhs. She Lockwood District 1 School and graduated from Grand Island Northwest High School in 1964. LoAnn C. Muhs and Jack G. Roach were united in marriage on July 18, 1964 in Chapman. They lived in Juniata, Hastings, and Grand Island until moving to Central City in 1976. LoAnn worked at Kentucky Fried Chicken in Grand Island, she babysat in her home, for 10 years she worked at the Central City Mall, and for the last 14 years, she had been working at Wal Mart in Grand Island.

She was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Grand Island, where she had taught Bible School. She was a 4-H leader, enjoyed decorating cakes, she loved children, and her greatest enjoyment came from being with her family.

LoAnn is survived by her husband, Jack, of Central City; three daughters-Jill and Pedro Camargo of Blair; Paige and Kevin Randa of Verdigre; and Jaci and Ron Dettman of Central City; one son-Dean and Jenny (Friend) Roach of Amherst; 14 grandchildren-Jessica Roach; Kory, Kelsey, Madisen, and Emerson Randa; Jordan LoAnn Roach; Tosha, Kade, Carsen, and Jackson Dettman; Pedro Camargo, Jr.; Emily and Rachel Camargo; and Brittany Jean Schritt; four brothers-Eldon Muhs of Grand Island; Don and Barbara Muhs of Bellevue; Doyle and Carol Muhs of Grand Island; and Larry and Anne Muhs of Pierce; two sisters-Ella and Ray Rubesh of St. Paul; and Vera and Kay Krueger of Grand Island.

She was preceded in death by her parents and infant grandchild.
