Robert VanKerrebrook, 83

(June 24) GORDON - Robert "Bob" VanKerrebrook, 83, died Saturday, June 21, at Parkview Lodge Assisted Living. He was born March 24, 1920, at Gordon, to Rene and Alice (Sandoz) VanKerrebrook.

He is survived by his sons, Doug VanKerrebrook of Estes Park, Colo., and Dan VanKerrebrook of Norfolk; daughters Joann Nelson of Eufaula Okla., Barb Schults of Lander, Wyo., Bonnie Fankhauser of Alliance, and Joyce Johnson of Rushville; 16 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He also is survived by one brother, Oscar VanKerrebrook of Gordon; and one sister Ila McCulla of Falls Church, Va.

Mr. VanKerrebrook's funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 25, at St. Leo's Catholic Church, with Fr. Tim Stoner officiating. Cremation will follow the service. A wake service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 24, at the church. A memorial has been established to the Gordon and Rushville Rescue Squads. Donations may be sent to First National Bank, P.O. Box 290, Gordon, NE 69343-0290. Cicmanec-Chamberlain-Pier Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Reverend Ralph M. Dyer, 86

(June 25) ALLIANCE - Reverend Ralph M. Dyer, 86, died Sunday, June 24, 2001, at Box Butte General Hospital. He was born June 26, 1914 at Smithfield, Nebraska to Edward and Clara Dyer.

He graduated from Elwood High School in 1932 and from Phillips University College of the Bible, Enid, Okla. in 1937 and was also ordained in 1937. While in college he served congregations in Verdon, Cement, and Hinton, Okla. as a student pastor. In Nebraska he served the Christian Churches (Disciples of Christ) in Sidney, Ashland, Minden, Hebron, Nebraska City, and Alliance. He served in many areas of the churches life as member and chairman of a number of state committees, President of the Nebraska Fellowship of the Christian Church in 1969-1970 and 1970-1971.

He was active in Boy Scouts of America, receiving the Silver Beaver award in 1968. He was a member of the Christian Church in Elwood at age 15. He began his ministry in Nebraska at age 23, retiring in Alliance in 1978. He worked for the Good Samaritan Society as Chaplain and manager of Good Samaritan Towers for eleven years retiring in 1989. He served as chairman of Box Butte County United Way for 3 years and organized Crop Walk in Nebraska City, Alliance, and Scottsbluff. Ralph was the first Chaplain for the Good Samaritan Health Care Center in Alliance from 1977 to 1981. He also filled in for the Presbyterian Church and Baptist Church in Alliance, and United Methodist Church in Hemingford.

Between 1977 and 1993 he was interim pastor at the United Church of Christ congregations in Hyannis, Ashby, Bingham and Hemingford. Ralph and his wife, Sally, have been residents of Alliance since June 4, 1972.

He is survived by his wife Sally of Alliance; daughter Doris Brewer of Council Bluffs, Iowa; four sons, Dave Dyer of Gladstone, Mo., Merle Dyer of Chesapeake, Va., Chuck Duncan of North Platte, and Scott Duncan of Kansas City, Mo.; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, parents, three brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services will be in Scottsbluff, at 2 p.m., Tuesday, June 26 at the First Christian Church, 2101 Avenue A, with Pastor Michael A. Stein officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Phillips Theological Seminary, 4242 South Sheridan, Suite 300, Tulsa, OK 74145. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Bonnie B. Briley, 77

(June 25) LINCOLN - Bonnie B. Briley, 77, Lincoln, died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000. He was born April 5, 1923 at Bridgeport. His parents were Bonnie and Lena Margaret (Ray) Briley.

He grew up in Alliance, where he met and married Betty Jean Price of Denver, Colo., in 1947. She preceded him in death on Dec. 7, 1975. They raised their sons Bonnie & Joe in Alliance until 1967 when the Burlington Northern Railroad transferred the family to Kansas City, Mo. He was a member of the U.S. Marine First 1st marine Raider Battalion in World War II and was a retired road foreman for Burlington Northern. He also was a member of the Masons, Alliance Lodge 183; Trap and Skeet Club, Lincoln; American Legion Post 3; BPOE 961, Alliance; and Izaak Walton League, Lincoln. He also was a 1996 Senior State Trap Shooting Champion.

He is survived by two sons, Bonnie B. Briley of Springfield, Mo., and Sean Briley of Kansas City, Mo.; 3 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and special friend Marie Curtis.

His funeral was held Dec 11, 2000, at Butherus, Maser & Love Funeral Home at Lincoln with military services by Fort Riley Honor Guard. Inurnment and memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, June 30 at the Alliance Cemetery.

R. Marie Hyland, 94

(June 25) HEMINGFORD - R. Marie Hyland, 94, of Hemingford passed away Saturday, June 23, 2001, at Hemingford Community Care Center. She was born Dec. 11, 1906, on a farm near Haxton, Colo. to Felix and Rose (OâMara) Mutchie.

She attended local elementary schools in the Holyoke, Colo. area and graduated from St. Patrick Academy in Sidney in 1925. She was married to R.B. (Benny) Hyland at Holyoke, Colo., May 11, 1927. The couple lived in Colorado, Nebraska and California before moving permanently to Hemingford in 1944. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary since 1945. She was also active in the St. Bridget Catholic Church and the Altar Society.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Benny in 1979, her parents, 6 brothers and one sister. Survivors include her sons, Bob and daughter-in-law Pat Hyland of Gering, and Gary Hyland of Ventura, Calif.; three grandchildren, Kim and her husband Dan Berry of Longmont, Colo., Scott of Estes Park, Colo., and Chris of Greeley, Colo.; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday, June 27 at St. Bridget Catholic Church in Hemingford. Father Hugh Spanel will officiate. Burial will be in the Hemingford Cemetery. A wake service will be at 7 p.m., Tuesday, June 26 at St. Bridget Church. Friends may call at the Bates-Gould Funeral Home in Hemingford Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and at the wake service. Memorials may be given to Prairie Haven Hospice, Hemingford Community Care Center Van Fund or to the Hemingford Volunteer Firefighters Association. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Frank L. Krotz, 90

(June 25) RUSHVILLE - Frank L. Krotz, 90, of Rushville, died Saturday, June 23, 2001 at his home. He was born Aug. 16, 1910 at Rushville. His parents were Charles and Rose (Vodicka) Krotz.

He was a member of St. Mary's (Holy) Episcopal Church. He is survived by three sons, Keith Krotz of Rushville, Franklin Krotz of Thornton, Colo., and Charles Krotz of Chesepeske, Va.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Mr. Krotz's funeral will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, June 28, at St. Mary's (Holy) Episcopal Church, with Rev. Lynn Orville officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary's (Holy) Episcopal Cemetery at Rushville. A memorial has been established in lieu of flowers. Donations may be sent to Security First Bank of Rushville. Chamberlain Chapel of Rushville is in charge of arrangements.

George T. Pfister, 80

(June 25) CHADRON - George P. Pfister, 80, of Chadron, died Saturday, June 23, 2001, at Crest View Care Center in Chadron. He was born Dec. 21, 1920 at Node, Wyo. His parents were Thomas and Francis E. (Seichter) Pfister.

He was a memer of The American Legion and St. Patrick's Catholic Church. He is survived by his wife, Jane of Chadron; two sons, Tom Pfister and David Pfister of Chadron; six grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren. He also is survived by one brother, Leo Pfister of Whitney; and one sister, Sister Coleta of St. Clairs Monastery of Omaha.

Mr. Pfister's funeral will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, June 26, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, with Father Robert Karnish officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery. A Wake service will be held at 7 p.m., Monday, June 25, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. A memorial has been established for the Chadron Volunteer Fire Department or St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Donations may be sent to Chamberlain Chapel, P. O. Box 970, Chadron, NE 69337.

Edith M. Lashely, 98

(June 25) CHADRON - Edith M. Lashley, 98, died Saturday, June 23, 2001, at Beverly Health Care Center in Scottsbluff. She was born Mar. 29, 1903 at Newport. Her parents were Fred and Edna (Potter) Popkay.

She is survived by two sons, Charles Lashley of Bertrand, and Richard Lashley of Deer Lodge, Mont.; one daughter, Anna Ashcraft of Gering; 33 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren. She also is survived by two sisters, Frances Trowbridge of Bayard, and Esther Winters of Pueblo, Colo.

Her graveside service will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday, June 27, at Greenwood Cemetery at Chadron. Visitiation will be 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Wednesday June 27, at Chamberlain Chapel. Chamberlain Chapel of Chadron is in charge of arrangements.

Fred Kruger, 95

(June 25) GORDON - Fred Kruger, 95, of Bennett, Colo., formerly of Gordon and Crookston, died Friday, June 22, 2001, at his home. He was born Dec. 1, 1905 in Cherry County. His parents were Herman and Emma (Sasse) Kruger.

He married Mildred Braunersrither in 1934. He farmed near Gordon until 1942, then moved south of Crookston where he ranched until 1962 when he moved to Colorado. He is survived by his wife, Mildred, of the home; one son, Leonard Kruger; three daughters, Bonnie Ebsen, Shirley McQuaid and Betty Brown; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Mr. Kruger's funeral will be at 1 p.m., Wednesday, June 27 at the Cicmanec-Pier Chapel at Gordon, with Rev. Rudy Schaff officiating. Burial will be in the Gordon Cemetery. Cicmanec-Pier Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Scott A. Hiatt, 35

(June 25) LINCOLN - Scott A. Hiatt, 35, died Saturday, June 22, 2002, as a result of a motorcycle accident near Chadron. He was born Nov. 9, 1966, at North Platte to Ronald L. and Norita J. (Olson) Hiatt.

He lived at Omaha, Wahoo and Alliance, where he graduated from high school. The family then moved to Berthoud, Colo. He was a 1991 graduate of the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. He married Kerri Arp of Kennard on Aug. 1, 1992. He was a Vice President at ITI at Lincoln; a member of Duck's Unlimited, Masonic Lodge and Sesostris Shrine at Lincoln. He lived his life to the fullest and loved his family, golfing, riding his motorcycle, hunting and building anything. He is survived by his wife Kerri and daughter, Hadley of Lincoln. He also is survived by his parents Ron and Rita Hiatt of Berthoud; brother, Rick and Christine Hiatt and daughters Cassidy and Ashley of Berthoud; sisters-in-law, Kaylene Franklin of Waterloo, and Koni and Les Shallberg of Fremont; brother-in-law, Kevin and Pam Arp of Kennard; mother-in-law, Sharon Arp of Fremont; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. He was preceded in death by his grandparents H. Lloyd and Dorothy Olson and Ida Hiatt; and father-in-law, Vernon Arp.

Mr. Hiatt's funeral will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday, June 26, at Faith Bible Church, with Pastor Tom Remple officiating. A memorial has been established to an educational trust fund for his daughter. Pallbearers will be Jay Oestreich, Mike Hagemeister, Rodger Hodges, Dave Wegman, Kevin Arp and Les Shallberg. Honorary pallbearers will be Rick, Randy and Vernon Hiatt and Bob Frank. Wyuka Cemetery and Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Rodger C. "Bud" Yoakum, 73

(June 26) CHADRON - Rodger C. "Bud" Yoakum, 73, died Monday, June 18, 2001, at Chandler, Ariz. He was born July 27, 1927, at Crawford. His parents were Percy and Edna Yoakum.

He graduated from Chadron High School in 1945, and then enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving aboard the USS Nichols. He married Joan Johnson on Nov. 23, 1953, at Hastings. He worked for Midwest Furniture until 1959; and then moved to Seattle, Wash., where he worked for Boeing Corporation. In 1961, he returned to Chadron and was employed by Pioneer Skelgas for 10 years, after which the couple owned and operated Yoakum's Service until they sold the business in 1993 and retired. He is survived by his wife, Joan; his son, Larry Yoakum of Buffalo, Wyo.; three daughters, Chris Platt of Mitchell, Shelece Yoakum of Chandler, Ariz., and Denise Skinner of Medford, Ore.; three grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren. He also is survived by his sister, Betty Wheeler of Black Diamond, Wash.

Mr. Yoakum's memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 30, at Chamberlain Chapel in Chadron, with Pastor Red Romell officiating. Memorials may be made to Chadron Volunteer Fire Department, in care of First National Bank of Chadron.

Velma E. Wildt, 93

(June 26) ALLIANCE - Velma E. Wildt, 93, died Monday, June 25, 2001, at Highland Park Care Center. She was born April 15, 1908, at Lexington to Jacob J. and May C. (Michael) Horner.

She married Kenneth O. Wildt on December 8, 1934, at Alliance. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Eastern Star, where she was Past Worthy Matron, American Legion Auxiliary Unit 7, where she was past president, and D.A.R. Her survivors include her son and daughter-in-law Bob and Kathy Wildt of Montrose, Colo., and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers, and two sisters.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, June 28, 2001 at the Bates-Gould Chapel, Reverend Mark Schutt officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the United Methodist Church or the Carnegie Arts Center. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
