Ruth L. Ita

Ruth L. Ita, 97, of Grand Island, formerly of the Archer and Palmer areas, died at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island on Thursday, February 27th. Funeral services will be Thursday, March 6th at 10: 30 a.m. at the Zion United Methodist Church near Archer with Rev. Rich Savage and Vernon Rice officiating. Burial will be in the Archer Community cemetery. Visitation will be at the church from 8: 30 a.m. until service time. Memorials are suggested to the cemetery or the Palmer Rescue Unit. Solt Funeral Home in Central City is in charge of the arrangements.

Ruth was born January 8, 1906, in Palmer to Herman and Anna (Meyer) Weller. She attended rural school district 47 in Merrick County and Archer High School. Ruth Louise Weller and William Ulrich Ita were united in marriage on February 25, 1926. They farmed in the Palmer area for 47 years. Mr. Ita died on June 29, 1973. Ruth continued to live on their farm, the Sunny Knoll Acres for twenty years before moving to Riverside Lodge in Grand Island in 1992 and to Tiffany Square in 2000.

She is a lifelong member of the Zion United Methodist Church near Archer. As a naturalist, Ruth loved the outdoor life; especially studying song birds and recording their songs. She enjoyed travelling, gardening, flowers, and her life on their farm. Ruth made tray favors for Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital and area rest homes. She and her husband had been foster parents and supported many missions such as Red Bird Mission in Kentucky, Henderson Home for Boys, and the Nebraska Christian Schools. One of her projects was an Arizona mission for which she made over 100 quilts for children’s beds.

Ruth is survived by her foster daughter Evelyn Swarts of Brighton, CO; two grandsons-Kirk and Kevin Swarts of Brighton, CO; four great grandchildren-Alicia, Curtis, Kimberly Swarts all of Brighton, CO; and Tyne Swarts of Henderson, CO: and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, one grandson-Tim Swarts; three brothers-Ernest, Richard, and Herman Jr. Weller; five sisters-Martha Wallace, Mary Magnuson, Anna Wegner, Lydia Wegner, and Minnie Fegan.

Lloyd McHenry

Clayton Lloyd McHenry, 67, of Archer, died on Sunday, February 23 at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City. Services will be Wednesday, February 26th at 10 a.m. at the Grace Lutheran Church in Central City with Sister Mary Arie officiating. Burial will be in the Aurora cemetery. Visitation is Tuesday, February 25th from 5 to 8 p.m. at Solt Funeral Home in Central City. Condolences may be sent to the family at soltfh.com.

Clayton was born on December 9, 1935 in Bridgeport, Nebraska to Lloyd and Dorothy A. (Klawonn) McHenry. He grew up in Aurora and graduated from Aurora High School in 1954. After graduation, he worked on a farm for a year before entering the U.S. Navy in 1955. In 1962, Clayton McHenry and Ina "Ruth" Dixon were united in marriage in Florida. After twenty years with the Navy, including serving in Viet Nam, Clayton retired in 1975. Clayton was living in Kingsville, Texas, at the time of his retirement; and continued living there and practicing his vocation of being a welder. He worked for the Celenese Corporation and then for Texas A and I University. He retired from this work in 1993 and moved to Archer in 1994.

Clayton was a faithful member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Central City. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and gardener.

Survivors include his mother, Dorothy McHenry of Aurora; one son Marty and Jan McHenry of Sugar Land, Texas; special companion-Peggy Slaughter of Archer; two sisters-Phyllis and David Hegy of Crystal Lake, IL; Ann and Jerry Lentz of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; one brother-Douglas and Linda McHenry of Hampton; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father in 1976, an infant daughter, infant twins, and an infant sister-June Joy McHenry.

Ruby Inez Chrisp

Ruby Inez Chrisp, 99, of Central City, died at the Central City Care Center on Monday, January 6th, 2003. Private family services will be held at Solt Funeral Home in Central City with Rev. Joy Savage officiating. Burial will be in the Central City cemetery. Friends of the family are invited to pay tribute to Ruby’s life by signing the registry book on Thursday, January 9th, from 9: 00 a.m. to 5: 00 p.m., at Solt Funeral Home. A memorial fund has been established in her memory.

Ruby was born on March 4th, 1903 in Beaver Crossing to Milton Starr and Alta Viola (Frink) McCollister. She attended Goehner School through her junior year and then graduated from Central City High School in 1922. Ruby took the Teacher’s Normal Training Course at Kearney and then taught at District 50 in Merrick County. On May 27, 1924, Ruby I. McCollister and Frank M. Chrisp were united in marriage at the Presbyterian Manse in Central City. Ruby was actively involved in the operation of their dairy farm and she worked along side her husband farming. Ruby worked for several years at Percy Powell’s paint and gift shop. They also owned a shoe repair shop in Central City. Frank died on January 30, 1969. Ruby continued living in Central City and had been living at the Central City Care Center at the time of her death.

Ruby was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church. She was a leader in the Central City North Ward PTA, was a member of the District Eight Home Extension Club, served as County Chairman of Merrick County Extension Clubs, was a 4-H leader, was a member of the Merrick County Saddle Club and Drill Team, and Farm Bureau.

Her greatest love was spending time with her family.

Survivors include two daughters-Alice and Earl Brandes and Lola and Ken Ross both of Central City; one son-David and Arlene Chrisp of Central City; two sisters-Celia and Willard Black of Central City and Hazel Lockner of Broomfield, Colorado; 9 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; and 2 great great grandchildren.

Ruby was preceded in death by her husband, one great grandson, Tarry Joseph Ross, two sisters-Enid Currey and Grayce Cudney, and one brother-Dale McCollister.

Marvel Jaice Hoover

Marvel Hoover, 67 years of age, of Central City, died at St. Elizabeth Community Health Center, in Lincoln, on Saturday morning, April 5, 2003. Services will be conducted from the Solt Funeral Home chapel, on Tuesday, April 8th, at 2: 00 P.M., with the Rev. Clifford Reynolds officiating. Burial will be in the Central City cemetery. Visitation will be on Tuesday, April 8th from10: 00 A.M. until noon at the Solt Funeral Home. A memorial has been established in her memory.

Marvel Jaice was born on February 4, 1936, in Grand Island, Nebraska, to Louis Fredrick and Edith Irene (Humphery) Wendt. She attended school in Grand Island. Marvel worked as a cook at the Holiday Inn, Meth’s Cafe and Vavar’s, all in Grand Island, "Some Other Place" cafe in Central City and from 1977 to 1991 she cooked at the Grand Island Veterans Home. Marvel enjoyed her grandchildren and took Tracy, Stacy, Daice and Casey shopping in Grand Island as often as she could. She enjoyed playing games, reading and her greatest love cooking.

Survivors include: two daughters, Lori McIntire and her husband Stan of Central City and Grace Hoover of Oregon, four grand children: Tracy Kahl and husband Wendel of Van Meter, IA, Stacy Brown and husband Andy of Colorado Springs, CO, Daice Hoover of Central City and Casey McIntire of Wayne, four Great-grandchildren: Brooke and Cody Kahl, and Dakota and Dawson Baker, one sister Paula Wetzel and husband Jack of Boardman, OR and brother-in law George Molczyk of Grand Island. She was preceded in death by a brother Ralph Wendt, sister Dorothy Molczyk and a Great-nephew Joshua Bartlett.

Hannah M. Butt

Hannah M. Butt, 98, of Central City, formerly of Palmer, died on Sunday, April 6, 2003, at the Central City Care Center. Visitation will be Thursday, April 10th from 5 to 7 p.m. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City. Following visitation, funeral services will be conducted at 7: 00 p.m. on Thursday, April 10th at the funeral home by Rev. Jack Eske. A time of fellowship and a lunch will be held after services at the funeral home. A private committal service will be held at the Central City cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Merrick Foundation for the Lock Performing Arts Center.

Hannah M. Butt was born on June 13, 1904 in Saline County to August and Augusta (Burkhart) Butt. The family moved to Merrick County in 1912 and Hannah attended District 50 School in Merrick County. Hannah made her home with her parents. Her father died in 1949 and her mother in 1953. After the death of her mother, she went to live with her sister and brother-in-law, Bertha and John Hake near Central City. After John’s death in 1979, Hannah and Bertha moved near Palmer. Hannah spent much of her time with her nephew, Weldon Hake, and her niece, Loris Ann Doncheske. Hannah moved into the Central City Care Center in 2002.

As an infant, Hannah was baptized at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Western, Nebraska. She enjoyed embroidery work, babysitting for great nieces and nephews, taking long walks and enjoying nature, and spending time on the farm.

Survivors include three nephews-Weldon and Wilma Hake of Palmer; LaRoy and Alpha Hake of Eureka, CA; and Roger and Marilyn Butt of Central City; seven nieces-Loris Ann and LeRoy Doncheske of Palmer; Nadine and Dale Hilderbrand; Dee and Ken Luebbe; Maxine Jensen; Dorothy and Bud Irwin; Illa Jean Scherer; and Reta Kleve all of Central City; and many great, great great, and great great great nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were seven brothers-Otto, Helmet, Rynold, Fritz, and Paul Butt; infant brothers-Anton and Franks Butt; three sisters-Elsie Nickel; Bertha Hake, and infant sister Marie Louisa Butt.

Hildegard Ann Ramage

Hildegard Ann Ramage, 72, of Ballwin, Missouri, died on Monday, December 9th at Delmar Gardens on the Green in Chesterfield, Missouri. Visitation will be at the Schrader Funeral Home in Ballwin on Thursday, December 12th from 4 to 7 p.m. Graveside services will be Saturday, December 14th at 11: 00 a.m. at the Central City cemetery. Solt Funeral Home in Central City is in charge of the arrangements. Memorials are suggested to the Wishing Well Foundation, P. O. Box 71; St. Louis, MO 63188.

Mrs. Ramage was born on June 18, 1930 in Tauberbischofsheim, Germany to Anton and Marie (Seehoff) Wellauer. She married Richard B. Ramage, a native of Central City serving in the military, in Germany. They lived most of their married life in the St. Louis area.

Mrs. Ramage was active in the Women’s Variety Club in the 1970’s and 1980’s and was a chaperone at the Miss Universe Pagaent in St. Louis in 1983.

Survivors include her husband, Richard B. Ramage of Ballwin, MO; one son-Richard A. and Vicky Ramage; one brother Karl and Ludwig Wellauer; two sisters-Louise and Katherina all of Germany; five grandchildren; her sister-in-law-Mary Ramage Wright of Omaha.

Ruth E. Oberg

Ruth E. Oberg, 96, of Central City formerly of Polk, died on Monday, December 16th at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City. Services will be Thursday, December 19th at 10: 00 a.m. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City with John Baker officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday, December 18th from 5 to 8 p.m. at Solt Funeral Home in Central City. Burial will be in the Polk cemetery.

Ruth was born on August 17, 1906 in Denver, Colorado an only child of Henry and Augusta Skoglund. As a toddler, she moved with her family to Round Rock, Texas. She graduated from high school in Round Rock and then attended Stoney Point College in Texas. On December 14, 1927 Ruth E. Skoglund and Floyd M. Oberg were united in marriage at Palm Valley, near Round Rock. They made their home in Polk and Ruth was a homemaker. Floyd died on June 25, 1967. Ruth continued to live in Polk until moving to Central City Care Center in June of 2002.

In 1934, Ruth became one of Jehovah’s Witness and served actively as such until her health made it impossible to continue to be actively involved. Ruth enjoyed gardening, growing flowers, and music.

Ruth is survived by her only child, a son, Mervin H. and his wife Kathleen Oberg of Polk and the family pet, Sweet Little Mopsy; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Vernon "Bud" McClurg

Vernon E. "Bud" McClurg, 78, of Central City, died at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City on Monday, December 30. Memorial services will be Saturday, January 4th at 10 A.M. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City with Rev. Joy Savage officiating. Graveside services will be at 2: 30 p.m. at Knoll Crest cemetery in Naper with Rev. Wilber Bullock officiating.

Bud was born on May 4, 1924 in Stuart to Charles E. and Lucy B. (Chenoweth) McClurg. His mother died when he was young, so his father and step-mother, Pearl, raised the children. Bud graduated from Stuart High School and then went to work construction on the dam at Fort Pierre, South Dakota for several years. On December 22, 1953, Vernon E. McClurg and Elizabeth Whitley Broekemeier were united in marriage in Butte, Nebraska. They made their home in Fort Pierre until moving to Stuart. He served as the town Marshall and city employee in Stuart until 1967. They moved to Norfolk and he worked as a printer for Affiliated Foods until 1971. At this time, they moved to Columbus and he continued his profession as a printer with Behlen Manufacturing. He retired in 1987 and they moved to Central City in 1988. Elizabeth died on May 26, 1996.

Bud was a member of the United Methodist Church and sang in the church choir. He enjoyed music very much and played the guitar, mouth harp, drums, Banjo, and violin. He shared his enjoyment of music by playing at nursing homes. Bud enjoyed going to the coffee shop and visiting; but his greatest pleasure came from being with his family.

Survivors include one step-daughter LaVerna and Verlyn Sieh of Omaha; two step-daughters-in-law Julie Broekemeier and Jan Broekemier both of Central City; three sisters-Helen Rainey of Corte Madera, CA; Onie Tyler of Creighton; Donna Tuchenhagen of El Paso, TX; one brother-Calvin McClurg of Las Cruces, NM; 14 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; and 1 great great granddaughter.

Bud was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, his step mother, two step sons-Mac Broekemier and Delbert Broekemeier.

Erma Adelson

Erma Adelson, 92, of Stromsburg formerly of Polk, died at Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg on Tuesday, December 24th. Services will be Saturday, December 28th at 1: 00 P.M. at the United Methodist Church in Polk, with Revs. Anderson Kwankin and Charles E. Myers officiating. Burial will be in the Swede Plain cemetery near Polk. Visitation is Friday, December 27th from 5 to 8 p.m. at Solt Funeral Home in Polk.

Erma was born on July 13, 1910 in Clarks to David H. and Emaline C. (Iler) Wilson. She grew up in Clarks, graduated from Clarks High School in 1927, and then received her teaching certificate from York College. Erma taught in rural schools around the Clarks and Chapman areas. On December 28, 1938 Erma Wilson and Leslie J. Adelson were united in marriage in York. They lived on a farm north of Polk until they retired in 1978 and built a home in Polk where they lived until Leslie died on August 6, 1993. Erma went to live at the Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg in 1994.

Erma was a member of the United Methodist Church in Polk where she was the church organist for many years, taught Sunday School, served as church treasurer, sang in the choir, and belonged to the United Methodist Women where she held various offices. While living on the farm, she was a member and officer of the Country Women’s Club and later the Polk Women’s Club. Erma was a member of the Ivy Chaper of the Order of the Eastern Star in Clarks and she was a member for over 50 years of the Willanna Chapter in Polk where she served as as Worthy Matron as well as many other offices including being the chapter organist. She was also a member of the Daughters of the Nile, she worked at the Polk County Fair judging, and on the election board. Gardening, baking, and canning were activities that Erma enjoyed, but her greatest enjoyment came from spending time with her family and taking care of grandchildren and her great grandchildren,

Surviving Erma are her daughter Sharon Adelson of Scottsdale, AZ; five grandchildren- Cindy England of Doniphan and Deb Alderson of Scottsdale, AZ ; Linda Alderson and R.J. Alderson both of Lincoln; and Amy Willms of Dallas, TX; seven great grandchildren-Heather, Andy, Heidi, and Josh England; Trevor and Cheyenna Alderson; Regan Willms; two sisters-Paloma Smith of Indianapolis; Henrietta Rich of Seatlle; and one brother Kenneth Wilson of Kalispal, MT; three nieces Lorita Coveyclose and helpful niece, of York, Emily Loghmani of Indianapolis, and Susan Kinter of Eerie, PA; three nephews David Pinneo of New Castle, Ind., Brock Wilson of Whitefish, MT, and Blair Fictum of CA; and several great nieces and nephews.

Preceding Erma in death were her parents, her husband; one daughter-Judy Adelson in 1969; and two sisters Lora Pinneo and Dorise Bowers.

Robert William Stevens

Robert William Stevens, 80, of Polk, died at The Ambassador Home Care in Lincoln on Wednesday, December 11, 2002. Memorial services will be Monday, December 16th at 1: 30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Polk with Rev. Anderson Kwankin officiating. Interment will be in the Polk cemetery. There will be no visitation. Solt Funeral Home in Polk is in charge of the arrangements.

Bob was born on June 7, 1922 in Polk to Clyde A. and Elsie Mae (Ang) Stevens. He received his early education at District 65 near Polk and graduated from Polk High School in 1940. After completing his schooling, he entered the U. S. Army on September 7, 1943. He married Ruth Elaine Lindburg on March 23, 1944. Bob served in the Asiatic Pacific and recieved a Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged on January 8, 1946. He returned to Nebraska and lived in Lincoln where he was a self-employed carpenter. Elaine died on May 28, 1948. On July 9, 1950, Robert W. Stevens and Marjorie Ann Dahlin were united in marriage in Lincoln. Bob worked for the Lincoln Public Schools until he was forced to retire in 1979 due to injuries received in a fall. Bob and Marjorie moved to Polk in 1992.

Bob was a member of the Polk United Methodist Church and the Polk American Legion Post No. 160. He enjoyed collecting models of vintage cars and John Deere items. He was a master craftsman specializing in cabinetry making and he enjoyed restoring furniture.

Survivors include his wife, Marjorie of Polk; three sons-Gregory and May Stevens of Martell; Douglas and Mary Stevens of Lincoln; Mark and Cindy Stevens of Lincoln; five daughters-Susan Jo Howard of Lincoln; Sheryl and Larry Schrage of Gretna; Beverly Goldsby and friend Keith Cuzzupe of Lincoln; Barbara and Paul Greenwalt of Lincoln; and Deborah and Jeff Vrana of Omaha; 20 grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Elaine; one brother, Gerald Stevens; and one great grandson, Dakota Matthews.

Melvin L. Swanson

Melvin Lewis Swanson, 71, of Central City, died at his home on Monday, December 30th after battling cancer. Funeral services will be Friday, January 3rd at 10: 30 a.m. at the Grace Lutheran Church with Sister Mary Arie officiating. Burial will be in the Central City cemetery. Visitation is Thursday, January 2nd from 5 to 8 p.m. at Solt Funeral Home in Central City. Memorials are suggested to the Grace Lutheran Church.

Melvin was born on December 17, 1931 near Central City to Oscar Lewis and Elsie Elmeda (Nelson) Swanson. He attended District 12 School and graduated from Central City High School in 1949. On January 9, 1953, Melvin L. Swanson and Shelba A. Lashley were united in marriage in Osceola. They farmed west of Central City until retiring from farming in 1991. After retiring from farming, Melvin worked for the Iams Company in Aurora until 1999. They lived in Grand Island from 1992 until returning to Central City in 1999.

Melvin was a lifetime member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Central City. He enjoyed rebuilding tractors, especially John Deere, and old vehicles. Melvin has been a faithful member of Alcoholics Anonymous since 1991 and has given help to many of other members. Going to the coffee shop and visiting with friends brought Melvin great joy; but his greatest love was the time he spent with his family.

Those surviving Melvin include his wife, Shelba of Central City; three daughters-Theresa "Teri" and Jack Money of Abilene, TX; Betty and Allen Freeman of Clarks; Pamela "Pam" and Dan Cash of Omaha; one son-Melvin L. "Mel", Jr. of Waco, TX; eleven grandchildren-Paul Downs, Jessica Downs Gailey, Robin Downs Thacker, Michael Downs, Christopher Swanson, Anne Swanson Evans, Stephanie Swanson Wilson, Nora Freeman LaBelle, Scott Freeman, Sean Cash, and Joe Cash; 23 great grandchildren; and one brother Gerald and Cathy Swanson of Central City.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Robert "Rob" Senkbile

Robert Douglas "Rob" Senkbile, 44, of Grand Island formerly of Central City, died on Sunday, December 29, 2002 in Grand Island. Memorial services will be Thursday, January 2nd at 2: 00 p.m. at Fairview United Methodist Church near Central City with Revs. Rich Savage officiating. Memorials are suggested to the Rob Senkbile Memorial Fund. Solt Funeral Home in Central City is in charge of the arrangements.

Rob was born in Central City on April 29th, 1958, the son of Richard D. and Ramona M. (Myers) Senkbile. He grew up in Merrick County, graduated from Central City High School in 1976, and then attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. On September 16, 1977, Rob Senkbile and Rosalie Regan were united in marriage at Fairview United Methodist Church. They lived in Central City and Rob worked for Marvin and Mary Ann Kyes on their farm near Central City and at Johnson Cashway in Grand Island. Rob moved to Grand Island and worked for NAPA and Schuppan’s Auto and Sales and joined the staff at Piccadilly Theatre in 1981, He worked as kitchen manager and an actor with the theatre until 1993. In 1995, be began working for Nathan Detroit’s where he was working at the time of his death.

Rob was a lifetime member of Fairview United Methodist Church. He loved the theatre and was a member of The International Thespian Society; he loved music and played Taps for many funeral as a young man. Rob was selected to attend Boy’s State, he was selected to the All-State Chorus, he belonged to the special singing group Nominus Expers at Central City High School, the high school band, chorus, and musical small groups. He enjoyed pool league, watching sports, and golf. Rob’s greatest love was spending time with his daughter and his great nieces.

Those surviving Rob are his daughter-Brandy Senkbile of Grand Island and her mother Rosalie Borgheiinck of Fullerton; his mother-Ramona Senkbile of Grand Island; five brothers-Rodney and Kathy of Central City; Randy and Lisa of Central City; Ron of Grand Island; Richard and Heidi of Chester, VA; and Ryan and Diana of Fountain, CO; four nieces, one nephew, two great nieces; three uncles-Homer and Virginia Myers of Fremont; Larnie and Sandy Myers of Louisville, TX; Marvin and Kae Myers of Ashland; and one aunt-JoAnn Myers of Logan, IA.

He was preceded in death by his father in 1982, his grandparents, and one uncle-Herbert Myers.
