Dorothy Elaine Emgarten

Dorothy Elaine Emgarten, 85, lifelong resident of Central City, died on Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City. Funeral Services are Monday, January 22 at 1 p.m. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City with Rev. Charles Pollard officiating. Burial will be in the Central City cemetery. Visitation is Sunday, January 21, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital Building Fund.

Dorothy was born in Central City on June 15, 1915 the daughter of Robert E. and Mary Victoria (Yarno) Everett. She received her education in the Central City Schools. On May 25, 1932, she was united in marriage to Albert Emgarten in Central City. Dorothy and Albert farmed in the Central City area all of their married life, with the exception of the time that Albert spent in the military during World War II. While Albert was stationed in Maryland, Texas, and Washington; Dorothy went these places to live and work. After Albert went overseas, she returned to Central City and carried mail during this time. In addition to farming with her husband, Dorothy also worked with her sister-Evelyn Truesdell; brothers-in-law Del Gleason and Dick Stuart hanging wallpaper and painting.

Dorothy was a member of the Neoma Quilting Club, she enjoyed gardening, and home decorating.

Survivors include her husband Albert of Central City; one sister-Evelyn Truesdell of Clarks; lifelong friend-Don Nouzovsky; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three brothers-Wilbur Everett, Roy Everett, and Ernest Everett; three sisters-Jessie Gleason, Nettie Stuart, and Helen Weaver.

Joseph Bradley Fritz

Joseph Bradley Fritz, 29 years of age of Clarks, NE, died on Sunday, Sept 23rd at the Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital, in Central City. Funeral Services are Tuesday, September 25th, at 10: 00 A.M. at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Central City with the Rev. Bradley Rick officiating. Visitation will be at the Solt Funeral Home on Monday, from 5 to 8 P.M. Interment will be in the Pierce Chapel cemetery of rural Clarks. A memorial fund has been established in Joseph’s memory. Joseph Bradley Fritz was born on April 3, 1972, in York, Nebraska to Hubert and Mary (Garrett) Fritz. Joseph attended special education in Columbus, Nebraska and had been in Region #4 Services in Columbus since July of 1977. He enjoyed music and television.

Joseph was baptized on April 7, 1972 by Rev. A.H. Wagner of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Central City, where he is a member.

He is survived by his mother and father, Hubert and Mary Fritz of Clarks, NE, sister, Linda Niemeyer and her husband Bernard of Kearney, brother, Tom and his wife Peggy, of Stromsburg, NE, sister, Barbara Neilsen of Ft. Collins, CO, brother, John and his wife Lori of Fullerton, NE, and sister Anne Harvey of Coati, CA, grandmother Marie Hernbloom of Osceola, NE, seventeen, nieces and nephews, one grandniece and one grandnephew.

He was preceded in death by one infant sister Nancy Kay, grandfather Walter Fritz, grandparents Frankie and Walter Garrett and one step-grandfather Wilbur Hernbloom.

Glen Albert Ferguson

Glen Albert Ferguson, 79, lifetime resident of the Clarks area, died at Park Place Nursing Home in Grand Island on Sunday, March 4, 2001. Services are Thursday, March 8th at 10 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Clarks with Rev. Richard Fairbanks officiating. Burial will be in the Pierce Chapel cemetery near Clarks. Visitation is Wednesday, March 7th from 5 to 7 p.m. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City.

Glen was born on April 6, 1921 in Clarks to Albert "Bert" H. and Flora (Boettner) Ferguson. He attended Pleasant Hill Country School and graduated from Clarks High School in 1941. After completing his education he farmed with his family. On January 14, 1945, Glen A. Ferguson and Rosemary Louise Kahler were united in marriage. They began their married life farming near Pierce Chapel. They then moved to farm near Havens and in 1963, they moved to their farm east of Clarks. Glen and Rosemary retired in the early 1990’s. Glen continued working part time for Sweet Electric and Strobel Industries. Rosemary died August 31, 1999.

Glen was a member of the Clarks United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two sons-Mike and wife Marcia Ferguson of Grand Island and Ric and wife Nancy of Hastings; one daughter-Vickie and husband Dan Leanna of Green Bay, Wisconsin; one brother-Earl and wife Selma Ferguson of Nelson; five grandchildren; and two great granddaughters.

Glen was preceded in death by his wife; parents; two sisters-Edith Zachary and Mary Dittmer; and three brothers-Ralph, Harold, and Carl Ferguson.

Albert Emgarten

Albert Emgarten 91 years of age, of Central City, died on Friday, November 9, 2001 at the Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital Long Term Care in Central City. Funeral services will be conducted from the chapel of the Solt Funeral Home, on Tuesday, November 13th, at 2: 00 P.M. with the Sister Mary Arie officiating. Burial will be in the Central City cemetery. Visitation will be at the Solt Funeral Home on Monday, November 12th from 5: 00 to 8: 00 P.M.

A memorial fund has been established in Albert’s memory. Condolences may be sent to the Emgarten family at www.soltfh.com.

Albert Edward August was born December 12, 1909, in Ceresco, Nebraska, one of eleven children of William N. and Elizabeth (Gilster) Emgarten. He attended school at District # 37. On May 25, 1932 he married Dorothy Everett in Central City. Albert worked several area jobs before entering the US Army on September 29, 1943 at Ft Crook, Nebraska and was honorably discharged on September 21, 1945 at Ft Levenworth, Kansas. He served in the North Apennies and PO Valley. Where he received a good conduct medal.

Albert moved to Central City in 1919 and farmed all his life. Dorothy and Albert assisted many families raise their children who they loved very much. He enjoyed cats, dogs and his farm animals.

Albert was a member of the American Legion Post #6 of Central City.

He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy on January 18, 2001, four brothers and seven sisters.

The Solt Funeral Home of Central City is in charge of arrangements.

Lawrence Kenneth Hankinson

Lawrence Kenneth "Larry" Hankinson, Jr. 78, of Grand Island, died on Monday, July 7, 2003, at the Nebraska Veteran’s Home in Grand Island. Memorial services will be Saturday, July 12th at 10: 00 a.m. at the Nebraska Veteran’s Home in Grand Island with Rev. Bill Forbes officiating. Burial will be in the Central City cemetery. Solt Funeral Home in Central City is in charge of the arrangements. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.soltfh.com.

Lawrence Kenneth was born on February 26, 1925 in Omaha to Lawrence Kenneth Hankinson, Sr. and Orletha Amelia Saunders. He lived in Omaha where he attended Lutheran Schools. Lawrence was one of the Veterans that were recognized in November of 2002 for receiving their high school diplomas. Lawrence had lived in Omaha, California, and in 1965 he came to Grand Island where he worked as a carpenter and in security work. On October 4, 1952, Lawrence K. Hankinson and Jeanenne E. Jensen were united in marriage. Mrs. Hankinson died in 1995. Lawrence had been living at the Nebraska Veteran’s Home since 2002.

As a young child, Lawrence was confirmed into the Lutheran faith and was currently a member of the First Christian Church in Grand Island. He enjoyed playing pool with other veterans and volunteered at the Veteran’s Home. He also enjoyed working in the garden with his wife. One of his greatest joys came from spending time with his grandson, Cody Borgelt.

Survivors include his daughter-Deborah E. and Gary Borgelt of Kearney; his son-Aaron K. Hankinson of Salt Lake City; and his step daughter-Linda E. Curtis also of Salt Lake City; one sister-Marge Lee of Platte City, Missouri; five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife; and one son-Kenneth Risdon Hankinson in 1954.

Robert H. Herman

Robert "Bob" Henry Herman, 82, of Clarks, died Friday, July 4th, 2003 at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City. Services will be Monday, July 7th at 10: 00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Clarks with Rev. Richard Dimond officiating. Burial will be in the Bureau cemetery by the Pierce Chapel Church near Clarks. Visitation is Sunday, July 6th from 5: 00 to 8: 00 p.m. at Solt Funeral Home in Central City. Robert Henry Herman was born on March 19, 1921 in Grand Island to Elmer and Ella (Lilienthal) Herman. His family lived in Grand Island until moving to Clarks in 1933. Bob graduated from Clarks High School in 1940 and entered the United States Army Air Force in 1942. He was with the Eighth Air Force and was stationed in England. He was honorably discharged in 1945. While stationed in England, Robert H. Herman and Thelma M. Francis were united in marriage on January 6th, 1945 at St. Augustine Church in Norwich, England. They returned to Clarks in 1945 and Robert farmed with his father. He farmed in the Clarks area all of his life.

Bob was a member of the United Methodist Church in Clarks and the Clarks VFW. He enjoyed his horses, livestock, farming, driving around the country in his pick up, and meeting his friends for morning coffee.

Survivors include his wife, Thelma of Clarks; two daughters-Diane McCoy and Bev Swanson both of Lincoln; six sons-David and Gayle Herman of Las Vegas; Ron and Tricia Herman of Lincoln; Ric and Vicki Herman of Clarks; Mike and Laura Herman of Greeley; Larry Herman of Phoenix; and Brian and Angie Herman of Fullerton; 19 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; one sister Evelyn and Robert Betts of Central City; and sister-in-law Gladys Herman of Clarks.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter-Peggy Barnes in 1982; one grandson-Christopher Swanson in 2000, twin great grandsons; and one brother-Harold Herman.

Waldo Lee Peterson

Waldo Lee Peterson, 67, lifetime resident of Clarks, died on Tuesday, July 29, 2003, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island. Services will be Thursday. July 31st at 10: 30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Clarks with Rev. Richard Dimond officiating. Burial will be in the Bureau cemetery by Pierce Chapel Church near Clarks. Visitation will be Wednesday, July 30th from 5 - 9 p.m. at Solt Funeral Home in Central City.

Waldo was born on September 9, 1935 in Polk County to Lawrence G. and Margaret M. (Kohl) Peterson. He grew up in Clarks and graduated from Clarks High School in 1954. Waldo Lee Peterson and Lyanne M. "Anne" Selko were united in marriage on April 20, 1956 in Clarks. They made their home in Clarks where Waldo worked with his father in the carpentry business. In 1961, Waldo went to work for Clarks Lumber and worked there for 36 years. He retired in 1997 and continued to live in Clarks.

Waldo was a member of the united Methodist Church in Clarks; the Solar Masonic Lodge in Clarks; and the Clarks Volunteer Fire Department for 43 years. As a young man, Waldo played semi-professional baseball with teams in Stromsburg and Osceola. He, also, coached his sons when they were involved in playing baseball. Waldo enjoyed hunting, fishing and doing carpentry projects for his family.

Survivors include his wife Anne of Clarks; two daughters - Peggy and Don Walford of Osceola and Jody and Bill Ziemba of Clarks; on sone - Ty Peterson of Clarks; five grandchildres - Walter Church, Michelle and Andy Rice; Amber and Juster Jarecke; Adam and Dennise Ziemba; and Audrey Ziembe; five step-grandchildren - Torri and Joel Janecek; Talli, Tanna, Tegan and Teran Walford; and three great grandchildren - Austin and Alex Jarecke; and Jacie Rice; one brother - Fredrick and Susie Peterson of Carmichael, CA.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son - Tony Peterson in 1978; and son-in-law Bob Church in 1998.

Lola Jean Meline

Lola Jean Meline, 70, of Polk died at Beverly Health Care Park Place in Grand Island on Thursday July 24th, 2003. Funeral services will be Monday. July 28th at 11: 00 a.m. at the Evangelical Free Church in Polk with Rev. Willie Pauls officiating. Burial will be in the Lindale cemetery near Polk. Visitation is Monday. July 28th from 8: 00 a.m. until service time at the church.

Lola Jean was born on October 13, 1932, in Hamilton County to Irvin C. and Aleta L. (Youmans) Fossberg. She grew up in Central City and graduated from Central City High School in 1951; and then she attended Beauty School in Omaha. On June 29, 1952, Lola Jean Fossberg and Philip Meline were united in marriage in Grand Island. The lived in Grand Island in the early years of their marriage and Philip was a barber. They moved to Polk where they owned and operated a barber and beauty shop. The, also, owned and operated Phil and Lola's Food Shop in Polk. In 1978, they moved to Worland, Wyoming where Lola worked in a bank. Philip died on January 24, 1908. Lola returned to Nebraska to live in Grand Island and work at First National Bank. She retired in the early 1990's and moved to Polk. Lola had lived in Central City since early spring of this year.

Lola was a member of the Evangelical Free Church in Polk. She enjoyed reading, sewing, cooking, painting yard art and crafts.

Survivors include two brothers - Denzil "Denny" and Nancy Fossberf of Grand Island and Dudley and Venice Fossberg of Nebraska City; two sisters - Gayle and Vernon Kranau of Hastings and JoAnn Fossberg of Omaha; one sister-in-law - Hannah Meline of Rockford, IL; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Mildred Shaffer Rickfelder

Mildred Shaffer Rickfelder, 94, of Peoria, Arizona, formerly of Polk, died at the Hospice of Arizona at the Freedom Plaza in Peoria on Tuesday, February 26th. Services were held Friday, March 1st at 10: 00 A.M. at the Lundberg Golden Door Chapel in Youngtown, Arizona. There will be a visitation at Solt Funeral Home in Polk on Tuesday, March 5th from 2: 00 p.m. until 3: 30 p.m. followed by graveside services at Arborville cemetery near Polk with Rev. Lester Anderson officiating.

Mildred was born in Polk on January 21, 1908 to Charlie and Anna (Pike) Graves. She grew up in the Polk area. In October of 1926, Mildred Graves and Ralph Shaffer were united in marriage. They lived in Grand Island and owned and operated Holland Furnace Company until their retirement in 1961. They moved to Tuscon, Arizona to live and Mr. Shaffer died on March 18, 1965. Mildred continued to live in Arizona and in 1970 married Lawrence Rickfelder. They lived in Peoria, Arizona.

Survivors include her husband Lawrence Rickfelder of Peoria, AZ; one step daughter Edith Eggleston of Auburn, NE; two step sons-Lawrence "Larry" Rickfelder of Elk Rapids, Michigan and Alan Rickfelder of Farmington Hills, Michigan; 9 step grandchildren; 13 step great grandchildren; and two step great great grandchildren; nephew Max Jones of Polk; and two nieces Joyce Baack and Beverly Bills both of Polk.

She was preceded in death by her first husband Ralph Shaffer and one sister Margaret Jones.

Verner H. Benson

Verner H. "Benny" Benson, 84, of Grand Island, died at Tiffany Square in Grand Island on Sunday, August 17th, 2003. Services will be Tuesday, August 19th at 2: 00 p.m. at Messiah Lutheran Church at Seventh and Locust in Grand Island with Rev. Jack Eske officiating. Burial will be in the Central City cemetery at 3: 30 p.m. Visitation is Tuesday, August 19th at the church from 10: 00 a.m. to 2: 00 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 10: 00 a.m. until noon.In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to Messiah Lutheran Church or to the families choice.

Verner was born on July 16, 1919 to Birger and Ethel (Timmons) Benson. He grew up in Hordville and received his education in Hordville. On February 19, 1942, he entered the United States Army and was assigned to the Signal Corps and served in the European Theatre, landing on Normandy Beach on VE Day. Verner and another soldier climbed the Eiffel Tower to place communications cables on top of it. Verner H. Benson and Alma Gilley were united in marriage in Hordville on October 16, 1942. Verner was honorably discharged from the service on October 25, 1945. Verner was employed by Northwestern Bell Telephone Company for 35 years and retired in 1981.

He was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church in Grand Island, the American Legion Post 53, Telephone Pioneers, and the Golden Trailblazers Camping Club.

Survivors include his wife, Alma, of Grand Island; two sons-Steven and Shelly Benson of San Antonia, Texas; David and Tina Benson of Grand Island; one daughter-Jolene and Bruce Moseman of Omaha; seven grandchildren-Nathaniel, Philip, Andrea, and Adam Moseman, Sarah and Derek Benson, and Camille Benson; two sisters-Agnes and Bernard Andreasen of Grand Island and Esther and Roy Kuhn of Ames, Iowa; two brothers-Edwin and Ann Benson of Fremont and Floyd and Joan Benson of Waukee, Iowa; two sisters-in-law - Louise Benson of Chapman and Mary and Vic Snell of Central City; one brother-in-law - Robert and Esther Gilley of Central City; and many nieces and nephews.

Verner was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers-Carl, Albin, Harold, Clarence, and Elmer; and one sister-Audrey Nygren.

Anita Maxine Cox

Anita Maxine Cox, 81, of Hordville died on Sunday, August 17, 2003, at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City. Funeral services will be Thursday, August 21st at 11: 00 a.m. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City with Rev. Joy Savage officiating. Burial will be in the Arborville cemetery near Polk. Visitation is Wednesday, August 20th from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Litzenberg Memorial County Hosital Foundation.

Anita was born on September 9, 1921 in Hamilton County to Robert and Fern (Boettner) Lindahl. She lived her life in the Clarks, Polk, and Hordville areas and received her education at Hamilton County country school and graduated from Clarks High School in 1939. Anita received her Registered Nurses Diploma from St. Francis School of Nursing in Grand Island in 1941. In 1942, she enlisted in the United States Army and served as a nurse. She was honorably discharged as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1943. For 40 years, Anita practiced nursing in Central City and Osceola, where she was Director of Nursing for ten years and during eight of these years she also operated the Snack Shack in Polk. She retired in 1982 from Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City. Anita M. Lindahl and Henry Kisler were married for 24 years until his death in 1973. In 1982, she was married to Howard R. Cox.

Anita was a member of the American Legion Post 160 in Polk, she was very active in the Legion Auxiliary, had been a 4-H Leader and active in the PTO during her children’s school years, was on the Polk and Hordville Rescue Squads for many years, a member of the Hordville Lions Club, enjoyed sewing, and her greatest love was for her husband and family.

She is survived by her husband, Howard of Hordville; two sons-Al and Sally Kisler of St. Louis, MO; Robert Kisler of Lincoln; three daughters-Linda Kisler of Omaha; Nancy and Jerry Gondringer of Lincoln; and Julia and Russ Kortum of Clarks; one step-son - Bernie and Jan Cox of Central City; two sisters-Doris and Hollis Stromberg of Clarks and Shirley Barnes of Reno, Nevada; eight grandchildren-Jill and Jeff Hartman; Chad and Kendra Gondringer; Brett Gondringer; Angela and Scott Klute; April and Bobby Kelley; Melanie Cox; Lisa Cox and Frankie Nicols; and Bill Cox; and eight great grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband-Henry Kisler; and great grandson-Logan Klute in 1998.

Gary Medinger

Gary Eugene Medinger, 56, of Grand Island formerly of the Fullerton area, died on Monday, August 25th, 2003, at Bryan LGH West in Lincoln. Funeral services will be Friday, August 29th at 10: 30 a.m. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City with Father Nelson Newman officiating. Burial will be in the Fullerton Catholic cemetery. Visitation is Thursday, August 28th from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the family.

Gary Eugene was born on July 28, 1947, in Genoa to Leo Peter and Caroline Henrietta (Zima) Medinger. He attended rural Nance County School and Fullerton High School. After completing his schooling, Gary and his brother, Clayton, owned and operated a service station in Fullerton for many years. He later moved to Grand Island to work as a certified diesel mechanic for Third City New Holland (formerly Meyers Farm Equipment).

Working on cars was Gary's favorite past-time and he especially loved corvettes.

Survivors include two sons-Stephen Medinger of Grand Island; and Jason and Rachael Medinger of Misouri; two daughters-Air Force Tech Sgt. Melissa and Val Balent of Peyton, CO; and Debbie and J. Evener Sorto of Grand Island; eight grandchildren; four sisters-Carol (M. Jack) Hahn of Lincoln; Delores (Donald) Faulhber of North Platte; Phillis (Doland) Swanson of Monroe; Donna (Donald) Swanson of Eagle; two brothers-Clayton and Cindy Medinger of Fullerton; and William Dean Medinger of Grand Island; sister-in-law Joyce Medinger of Central City; and many friends. Gary will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Those preceding Gary in death were his parents and two brothers-Norman and LeWayne Medinger.
