Margaret Ann Kortum

Margaret Anne Kortum, 83, lifetime resident of Chapman, died at her home on Thursday, September 25th, 2003. Funeral services will be Monday, September 29th at 10: 30 a.m.at the United Methodist Church in Chapman with Rev. Joy Savage officiating. Burial will be in the Chapman cemetery. Visitation is Sunday, September 28th from 5 to 8 p.m. at Solt Funeral Home in Central City.

Margaret was born on November 14, 1919 in Chapman to George and Anna (Frank) Green. She graduated from Chapman High School and then worked at Ury Drugstore in Chapman. On April 24, 1944, Margaret A. Green and Jack H. Kortum were united in marriage in Grand Island. They made their home and raised their famiy in the Chapman area.

As a member of the United Methodist Church in Chapman, Margaret was very actively involved in the life of the church. She taught Sunday School for thirty years, was a member of the Church Circle, and UMW. Margaret was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Laura May Chapter and had served as past worthy matron. She was a 4-H Leader, and enjoyed gardening, canning, and raising chickens.

Those surviving her are her husband, Jack of Chapman; one daughter-Jacqueline and Duane Drummond of Carthage, IN; one son-Ronald and Gloria Kortum of Chapman; sister-in-law Alice Green of Chapman; three grandchildren-Sara and Trent Tyler; Steven Kortum; and Jason Drummond; and two great granddaughters-Haylie and Hannah Tyler.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother-Claude Green; and a great grandchild.

Mariann Zywiec

Mariann Zywiec, 65, of Central City, died on Wednesday, August 27th, 2003 at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City. Funeral services will be Saturday, August 30th at 10: 30 a.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Central City with Father Nelson Newman officiating. Burial will be in the Central City cemetery. Visitation will be at St. Michael's Catholic Church on Friday, August 29th from 5 to 7: 30 p.m. with a prayer vigil at 7: 30 p.m.

Mariann was born on October 17, 1937 at home near Belgrade to Louis J. and Erna M. (Hellbusch) Landers. She grew up in Belgrade and graduated from Belgrade High School in 1955. As a young girl, Mariann had worked at the grocery store in Belgrade and after graduation she worked for Bell Telephone in Central City until her marriage. On September 26, 1957, Mariann Landers and Dominic "Dick" Zywiec were united in marriage at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Central City. They made their home in the Belgrade and Fullerton area where they farmed until 1964 when they moved to Central City. In addition to raising her family, Mariann also worked at the Lincoln Manor in Central City and Williamson's Interior in Grand Island. Mariann worked with her daughter, Lisa, at Tag Team Tours as quide for tours to Fort Randal. She also had worked at Bosselman's.

Mariann was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Central City and a past member of the Altar Society. She enjoyed bowling and she and Lisa co-authored two books--"Casino Almanac" and "Casino USA".

Survivors include her husband, Dick of Central City; two sons-Mike and Jonita Zywiec and Rick and Candy Zywiec all of Central City; and one daughter, Chris Wendt of Oklahoma City; six grandchildren; and three brothers-Wesley and Marlene Landers of Westminster, CO; Raymond and Beverly Landers of Ashton; and Alden and Celeste Landers of Aurora, CO.

Mariann was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter-Lisa Hansen and one brother-LaVern Landers both in April of 2002.

Benedict Conrad "Ben" Zoucha

Benedict Conrad "Ben" Zoucha, 48, of Clarks, died in Clarks on Wednesday, July 4th. Services will be Saturday, July 7th at 10: 30 a.m. at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Clarks with Father Don Cleary officiating. Burial will be in the Clarks cemetery. Visitation is Friday, July 6th from 5 to 7: 30 p.m. at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Clarks with a 7: 30 p.m.

Ben was born on June 19, 1953 in Grand Island to Benedict B. and Monica (Zegar) Zoucha. Ben grew up in Clarks and graduated from Clarks High School in 1971. On April 29, 1978 Benedict C. Zoucha and Rita A. Yrkoski were united in marriage at Krakow Catholic Church near Silver Creek. They lived and raised their family in Clarks. Ben worked as a foreman for Atlantic Homes in Central City; and he had been with the company for 26 years.

Ben was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Clarks. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and was an avid supporter of his children’s activities.

Survivors include his wife Rita, of Clarks, one daughter-Sherri Zoucha of Columbus; three sons-Dominic, Dyrek, and Brent all of Clarks; his mother, Monica Zoucha of Clarks; two sisters-Connie and husband Dale Daigh of Bellevue and Stephanie and husband Dan McClure of Central City.

Ben was preceded in death by his father in 1995.

Hubert G. Fox

Hubert G. Fox, 80 years of age of Grand Island, formerly of Silver Creek, died Friday, March 7, 2003, at the Nebraska Vetrans Home in Grand Island. Funeral services will be conducted from the United Methodist Church of Silver Creek, on Tuesday, March 11th at 1: 30 P.M. The Rev. Bev Minor will officiate with burial in the Roselawn cemetery in Columbus. Visitation will be at the Solt Funeral Home in Central City, on Monday, March 10th, from 5 to 8 P.M. The Solt Funeral Home of Central City is in charge of arrangements.

Hubert Galen Fox was born on March 23, 1921, in Duncan, NE, to William and Eva (Gottschall) Fox. He attended rural school near Clarks. He worked in the CC Camp for several years. He lived in Clarks, Monroe and the past 30 years in Silver Creek. He worked for Grosch irrigation for sever years and was a guard for Pinkerton Security Service at Behlen Manufacturing in Columbus for several years. Hubert liked to read books.

Survivors include three sisters: Bernita Dittmer of Clarks, Dorothy Rust of Silver Creek and Beulah Wilson of Apache Junction, AZ and one brother Murrey Fox of AZ. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Delora Schmid, four brothers: Joe, Sylvan, Duane and Orville.

Alonzo Ksiazek

Alonzo August Ksiazek, 92, of Central City formerly of Clarks, died at Long Term Care in Central City on Monday, September 24, 2001. Services will be Saturday, September 29 at 10: 00 a.m. at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Clarks with Father Don Cleary officiating. Burial will be in the Calvary cemetery near Clarks. Visitation is at the church on Friday, September 28th from 5 to 8 p.m. with an 8 p.m. vigil service. Memorials are suggested to St. Peter’s Catholic Church.

Alonzo was born on August 3, 1909 in Nance County to Peter and Anna (Liss) Ksiazek. The family moved to Merrick County in 1921. He received his education in Nance and Merrick counties.

On November 6, 1933, Alonzo A. Ksiazek and Barbara Starostka were united in marriage at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Clarks. They farmed and raised livestock near Clarks all of their married life. Barbara died in April of 1971. On January 12, 1972, he married Della May Schott in Alhambra, California. They made their home on the farm west of Clarks. In October of 2000, they moved into Central City.

Alonzo was the Merrick County Hand Cornhusking Champion in 1933, 1938, 1940, and 1941. He placed second in the state contest in 1941 and went on to the national contest in Illinois and was ranked 15th.

Alonza was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church. Alonzo enjoyed gardening, playing cards and pool, and had enjoyed hunting in the past.

Survivors included his wife, Della May of Central City; three sons-Jerry Ksiazek of Rockford, Illinois; James and wife Pat Ksiazek of Clarks; and Robert Ksiazek Littleton, CO; three daughters-Wilma Maddock of Laguna Niguel, CA; Carol and husband Laverne Anderson of Ashland; and Betty and husband Monte Roumpf of West Des Moines, Iowa; three step children-Linda Kay Ksiazek of Oregon, Illinois; Genelle and husband Robert Clements of Tecamah; and Gordon F. Schott of Central City; three sisters-Emily Neneman of Omaha; Celia Czarnick of Valley; and Betty Chieloha of Columbus; 20 grandchildren, 10 step-grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; and 3 step great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife Barbara, six brothers-Ted, Stanley, Ed, Sylvester, John, and Leo; and two sisters-Mary Swantek and Helen Ksiazek.

Dale King

Dale E. King, 71 years of age of Central City, died unexpectedly at Bryan LGH West in Lincoln, NE Friday evening November 9, 2001. Funeral services will be conducted from the Solt Funeral Home chapel, Wednesday, November 14th, at 10: 30 A.M. with the Rev. Dean Entrekin officiating. Burial will be in the Central City cemetery. Visitation will be at the Solt Funeral Home on Tuesday, November 13th from 5: 00 to 8: 00 P.M. A memorial fund has been established in Dale’s memory. Dale Eugene King was born on July 2, 1930 in Merrick County to Ralph and Inez (Farlee) King. He attended school in Central City where he graduated with the class of 1949. Dale worked for Percy and Ralph Hensley and Don Randall before entering the service. He married Betty Jane Watkins of Central City on February 10, 1952. Dale entered the Korean Conflict in1952 and was honorably discharged in 1953. Dale farmed in the Archer area until 1991 when he retired. He started driving a bus for the Central City Schools in 1990 and was getting ready to bring the Central City Band members home from the State Volleyball meet when he died. Driving the school bus was one of the things he enjoyed very much.

Dale was a member of the First Christian Church of Central City. A member of the American Legion Post #6, Lone Tree Lodge #36 A.F. & A.M., Arbor Chapter #200 Order of the Eastern Star all of Central City.

Survivors enclude: his wife Betty of Central City, children; Elton King of Central City, Marilyn Catlett and husband Terry of Central City, Marcia Cockerill and husband Mark of Spalding, NE, Carolyn Souhrada of El Cajon, CA and David King and wife Devon of Central City, his mother, Inez King of Central City, twelve grandchildren and one sister Darlene Richards and husband Dennis of Loup City, NE. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Jocelyn, father Ralph and one brother Donald.

Anna Ford Knight

Anna Ford Knight, 91, of Central City, died at her home on Saturday, March 3, 2001. Services are Thursday, March 8th at 2: 00 p.m.at the United Methodist Church in Central City with Revs. Joy Savage and Stephen Deines officiating. Burial will be in the Grand Island City cemetery. Visitation is at Solt Funeral Home in Central City from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 7th. Condolences may be sent to the Knight family at www.soltfh.com.

Anna was born on March 26, 1909 in Grand Island to Cornelius and Sarah (Bice) Ford. She moved with her family to the Worms area when she was young and then into Chapman. She graduated from Chapman High School in 1926 and continued her education at Nebraska Central College in Central City where she received her Normal Training to be a teacher. Anna also took many continuing education courses through Kearney State College. As a young woman, Anna taught at District 29 in Merrick County and then taught 7th and 8th grades in Chapman. On June 16, 1936, Anna Ford and Andrew Knight were united in marriage in Chapman. They farmed near Chapman. Anna returned to teaching in 1960, and taught kindergarten in Chapman until 1965. After retiring from teaching in 1965, she moved to Central City and worked at the Central City Elementray School library until the late 1970’s. Anna had also sold Avon in the rural Merrick County areas for many years.

Anna was a member of the Chapman Baptist Church and had taught Sunday School. When she moved to Central City, she became a member of the United Methodist Church. Anna enjoyed singing and was a member of the choir in both of these churches. She was also a member of the Laura May Chapter 251 of the Order of Eastern Star and had been Supervisor of District 21 in 1957. While attending Nebraska Central College in the early 1930’s, Anna participated on the field hockey team and was Miss Merrick County.

Survivors include her daughter Andrea Elaine and her husband Jim Kuhn of Omaha; one grandson-James Brouden Kuhn of Boston; and many loving nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great great nieces and nephews; and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters-Lola Beetem and Dorothy Anderson.

Harriett Bedient

Harriett Bedient, 85 years of age, of Polk, died at the Central City Care Center on Tuesday, June 3, 2003. Memorial Services will be Friday, June 6th at 2: 00 P.M. at Arborville Congregational Church near Polk with Rev. Lester Anderson officiating. Burial will be in the Arborville cemetery near Polk. Solt Funeral Home of Polk is in charge of the arrangements.

Harriett was born July 14, 1917 in York County to Charles C. and Edith V. (McMurrin) Burgess. She attended Polk High School and graduated with the class of 1936. She also attended UNL. She married Fred Bedient on January 20, 1937 at the Burgess family home. After their marriage, they moved to Iowa until 1942 when they moved back to Polk onto the same farm where they resided for over sixty years.

Harriett was a member of the Arborville Congregational Church, where she taught Sunday School and was the Sunday School Superintendent. She was also a member of the Missionary Aid Society. She enjoyed crocheting, flowers, and gardening.

Survivors include: one daughter; Alfretta Cummings and husband Harold of Weeping Water, one son; Bruce Bedient and his wife Carol of Polk, one Daughter-in-law; Mary Jane (Vern) Samuels of Polk, one Sister; Marcella Perkins of Central City; four Grandchildren-Lisa Bedient of Mammoth Lake, CA; Shawn Bedient of Polk; Holly Jo and Myron Parsley of Lincoln; and Shane and Nicolle Samuels of Chetek, WI; and one Great-granddaughter; two Step Grand- children-Ray and Kathy Cummings of Omaha and Valerie and Warren Lauritzen of Lincoln; five Step-Great-Grandchildren; and one Step-Great-Great-Grandchild.

Those preceding Harriett in death were her parents; husband and one son-Warren Lee Bedient.

Delbert "Dean" Broekemeier

Delbert D. "Dean" Broekemeier, 72, of Central City, died Friday, September 13 at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City. Funeral services will be Monday, September 16th at 2: 00 p.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Central City with Rev. Bradley Rick officiating. Visitation will be Monday, September 16th from 11: 00 a.m. until service time at the church. Burial will be in the Central City cemetery. Solt Funeral Home in Central City is in charge of the arrangements.

Delbert was born on September 28th, 1929 in Burke, South Dakota to Alfred H. and Elizabeth M. Whitley Broekemeier. He grew up in Naper, Nebraska and graduated from Naper High School in 1946. After his graduation, he moved to Norfolk and on November 15, 1947 he was united in marriage to Juliette "Julie" M. Berg at Christ Lutheran Church in Norfolk. They lived in Norfolk and Delbert worked as a welder for Norfolk State Hospital. In 1950, they returned to Naper where they farmed and he was a salesman for Moorman’s Feed. In 1961, they moved to Central City and Delbert continued working for Moorman’s Feed until 1970. In 1970, the family moved to their farm near Central City. Delbert farmed, raised hogs, and sold feed and seed. He retired in 1994 and then devoted his time to rebuilding John Deere machinery.

Delbert was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Central City where he was very active in the life of the church. He enjoyed playing softball and was a sponsor for many of the teams. He loved horses, camping, deer hunting, attending auctions, and sports. His greatest love was for his family and he faithfully attended the events that his children and grandchildren participated in.

Survivors include his wife, Julie of Central City; his step-father Bud McClurg of Central City; five sons-Darol and Margie of Genoa; Marlo and Gloria of Central City; Michael and Shelly of Archer; Don and Tina of Central City; and Dale and Karla of Aurora; one daughter-Cheryl and Dave Marsh of Hillsboro, Kansas; one sister-LaVerna and Verlyn Sieh of Omaha; a sister-in-law Jan Broekemier of Central City; 18 grandchildren; and 1 great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents-Alfred Broekemeier and Elizabeth Whitley Broekemeier McClurg and one brother Mac Broekemier.

These spellings of Broekemeier -- Broekemier are correct.

Minnie Blanche Butt

Minnie Blanche Butt, 100, of Central City, died on Tuesday, September 11, 2001 at Long Term Care in Central City. Services will be Friday, September 14 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Central City with Rev. Bradley Rick officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, September 13 from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. at Solt Funeral Home in Central City and on Friday, September 14 from 9 a.m. until service time at the church. Burial will be in the Central City cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the Butt family at www.soltfh.com.

Minnie was born on June 4, 1901 in Beaconsfield, Iowa to Charles Edward and Clara Elizabeth (Morgan) Clauff. At the age of 2, Minnie traveled with her family in a wagon to live near Osceola, Nebraska. Her family moved to a farm near Clarks, Nebraska in 1904 and Minnie attended District 25 School and graduated from Clarks High School in 1920. After graduation, Minnie taught at rural schools near Clarks and Fullerton, Nebraska. On May 23, 1923, Minnie B. Clauff and Rynold F. Butt were united in marriage at the Evangelical Church Parsonage in Fullerton. They farmed and lived in the Clarks area. In 1947, they moved into Central City; but continued to farm in the Clarks area. Minnie took courses at Concordia College in Seward, Nebraska and received her teacher certification. She taught from 1954 until 1962 in Chapman, Fullerton, and in Clarks at Districts 1, 12, 21--where she taught seven of her grandchildren, and 27. Rynold died on June 21, 1957. Minnie retired from teaching in 1962, but then became head librarian at Hards Memorial Library in Central City. She continued at this position until 1984, when she retired at the age of 83. Minnie moved into Long Term Care in 1998.

Minnie is a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and the Ladies Guild. As a young mother, Minnie belonged to a neighborhood extension club, she enjoyed cooking, and was an avid card player. She enjoyed traveling and had been to Europe, most of the 50 states including Alaska and Hawaii, Canada, Mexico twice, and had flown over the North Pole in a bush plane. Her last trip was at 92, when she went with a tour to Missouri. On June 4th, 2001, Minnie celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends at Long Term Care and was honored as an Admiral in the Nebraska Navy by Governor Mike Johanns. Minnie had three main loves in her life--her family, teaching kids, and genealogy.

Survivors include one daughter-Reta Lee Kleve of Central City; daughter-in-law Alvera Butt of Central City; son-in-law Jay Gee of Central City; sister-Hilda Major of Fullerton; sister-in-law Hannah Butt of Palmer; 9 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and 4 great great grandchildren;

Minnie was preceded in death by her husband; one daughter-Laree Gee; one son-Louis Butt; two grandsons-Bruce Butt and Larry Gee; one sister-Mildred (Adamson, Davis, Moore) Jemison; one brother-C. Marvin Clauff; and one great great granddaughter-Jordan Bentley.

Ruth Benson

Ruth Louise Benson, 84, of Hordville, died at Hamilton Manor in Aurora on Sunday, February 11, 2001. Services are Wednesday, February 14th at 2: 00 pm at Fridhem Lutheran Church in Hordville with the Reverend Charles Pollard officiating. Burial will be in the Hordville cemetery. Visitation is Tuesday, February 13th from 4 to8 pm at Solt Funeral Home in Central City. Memorials are suggested to Fridhem Lutheran Church in Hordville.

Ruth was born on September 15, 1916 on a farm near Sidney, Iowa to Raymond Arthur and Lena (Madison) Trewet. She lived in Sidney until 6th grade then moved to Fremont, Nebraska graduating from Fremont High School in 1933. She attended Nebraska Central College in Central City, Nebraska and was an elementary teacher in Merrick County for six years and served as an office secretary for the Merrick County Superintendent of Schools for 1 1/2 years. On June 6, 1943, Ruth L. and Albin H. Benson were married in Ogden, Utah. They lived in Central City and moved to Hordville in 1947 where Albin established Benson Plumbing. Ruth was a homemaker and served as secretary for Hordville Public Schools for more than 20 years. Albin died September 8, 1981. Ruth continued to live in Hordville until moving to Hamilton Manor in Aurora in 1994.

Ruth was a member of Fridhem Lutheran Church in Hordville where she was a member of the Ladies Guild, Sunday School Superintendent, and teacher for more than 30 years. She served on the Board of Education of Hordville Public Schools for 9 years, active as a 4-H leader, home extension club member, Royal Neighbors of America and participated in a local card club.

Survivors include one daughter - Sharon (Ronald) Carlson of Aurora, Colorado; and Lennis (Patricia) Benson of Norfolk, Nebraska; 6 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Albin; two brothers, Howard and Raymond Trewet; and one sister, Erma Jipp.

Annabell Bailey

Annabell Emily Bailey, 82, of Clearwater, Kansas formerly of Central City, died in Clearwater on Thursday, April 19th. Services are Saturday, April 21st at 11 a.m. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City with Father Nelson Newman officiating. Visitation is Saturday, April 21st from 9 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Central City cemetery.

Annabell was born on October 30, 1918, in Remsen, Iowa to William and Emma (Smith) Fiegen. She grew up in Remsen and received her education here. After completing her schooling, Annabell worked as a nurse’s aid in Del Rapids, South Dakota. On January 27, 1942, Annabell E. Fiegen and Max D. Bailey were united in marriage in Del Rapids, South Dakota. While Max served in the military, Annabell lived in Memphis, Tennessee and San Antonio, Texas. After Max’s discharge, they returned to Nebraska and farmed near Wolbach. Max then went to work for the U.S. Postal Service and the family lived in Grand Island and Lincoln. After retirement, Max and Annabell lived in Chapman and Central City from 1972 until 1986. They lived for a short time in Washington and then returned to Central City. Max died on January 27, 1990. Annabell continued to live in Central City until 1997 when she moved to Clearwater, Kansas to be near her daughter.

Annabell was a member of the Catholic Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed gardening and crafts.

Survivors include one daughter-Rita and husband Ed Elrod of Clearwater, Kansas; and one son-Tom and wife Betty Bailey of Harlem, Georgia; and two grandchildren.

Annabell was preceded in death by her husband; two brothers-Joe and Hilary Fiegen; and one sister-Mary Leffler.

Morris W. Nitzel

Morris W. Nitzel, 78, of Central City, died on Wednesday, May 05, 2004, at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City. Funeral services will be Saturday, May 8, 2004 at 10: 00 A.M. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home with Rev. Rich Savage officiating. Visitation will be Friday, May 7th from 5 to 8 P.M. at the funeral home. Burial is in the Central City cemetery.

Morris Wayne was born on December 13, 1925, in Central City to Lawrence Walter and Bessie Margaret (Morris) Nitzel. He grew up in Central City and graduated from Central City High School in 1943 and he received his Business Management Degree from Lincoln School of Business. On May 24, 1945, Morris W. Nitzel and Virginia Mae Coleman were united in marriage in Kansas. Morris farmed for several years in northern Merrick County and in 1962, he began working for LL Distributing in Grand Island. He retired as their General Manager in 1987.

Morris was a member of Pierce Chapel United Methodist Church near Clarks. He enjoyed gardening, flowers, fishing, and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Virginia, of Central City; two sons-Doug and Sue Nitzel of Hordville, Mike and Diane Nitzel of Gilbert, Arizona; two daughters-Jean and Jack Munn of Chapman and Peg and Alan Schweitzer of Central City; ten grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; and one brother-Paul Nitzel of La Mesa, California.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters-Betty Holtorf and Hannah Hobbs; and grandson-Mario Munn.
