Hester F. Crites

Hester Fern Crites, 100, of Central City, died on Wednesday, May 19th, 2004, at Long Term Care in Central City. Graveside services will be Tuesday, May 25th at 10: 30 A.M. at the Central City cemetery with Rev. Joy Savage officiating. Solt Funeral Home in Central City is in charge of the arrangements.

Hester was born on April 28, 1904, near Norman, Nebraska the daughter of George J. and Olive E. (Meyer) Wilson. When she was twelve years old, her family moved to Giltner where she graduated from Giltner High School in 1922. After attending Business College in Hastings, Hester came to Central City in 1923 to work for M.A. Larson Real Estate. On May 17, 1927, Hester F. Wilson and Raymond N. “Ram” Crites were united in marriage in Central City; where they made their home, raised their family, and lived the remainder of their lives. Ram died on January 28, 1983. Hester lived in her home until several years ago when she went to live at Merrick Manor and then had moved into Long Term Care in the fall of 2003.

Hester was a member of the United Methodist Church in Central City and had been active in the life of the church. She enjoyed playing bridge, and had dedicated her life to her family.

Those left to cherish her memory are her three daughters-Joan Mortenson of Huntington Beach, California; Martha Rae and Dale Holmes of Chandler, Arizona; Janet and Wayne Larson of Fremont; one son-Clay and Marlene Crites of West Chester, Pennsylvania; twelve grandchildren; and 17 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; an infant daughter-Jean Marie; one grandson-Bill Holmes; and three sisters-Iris Lyons, Phyllis Donelson, and Mary Schwarz.

Roland C. Oberle

Roland C. Oberle, 82, of Central City, died on Friday, May 07, 2004, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island. Services will be Monday, May 10th at 10: 30 A.M. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Central City with Father Nelson Newman officiating. Visitation will be on Sunday, May 9th from 6 to 7: 30 P.M. with a 7: 30 P.M. Rosary at St. Michael’s Catholic Church. Burial will be in the Central City cemetery. Solt Funeral Home in Central City is in charge of the arrangements.

Roland was born on January 10, 1922, at Verdigre to Claude Bryan and Cecelia Rose (Stoikes) Oberle. He grew up in northeast Nebraska and attended country school near Verdigre and Verdigre High School. After completing his schooling, he farmed with his family until entering the U.S. Army and serving from 1946 to 1949. On June 4, 1946, Roland C. Oberle and Verena M. Thunker were united in marriage at Crofton. They farmed in the Coleridge area for ten years. Roland then drove truck for nine years, living in various communities in Nebraska. In 1970, he became manager for Moormans Mfg. Company and they moved to Central City. Roland retired from this position in 1984.

Roland is a member of the St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Central City. He enjoyed working on anything mechanical, he and Verena enjoyed camping and have traveled all over the United States and for many years after retirement, they enjoyed wintering in Arizona; but his greatest love was spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Verena of Central City; daughter-Marilyn Coffey of Billings, Montana; sons Dean and Linda Oberle of Holdrege and Roger Oberle and Adrienne Feldman of Evergreen, Colorado; and daughter Karla and Dale Broekemeier of Aurora; one brother-Raymond and Lois Oberle of Norfolk; nine grandchildren-Kim Coffey, Michele and Mark Grant, Russell and Robyn Coffey, Jackie and Nick Theysohn, Dean “Joe” and Angela Oberle, Jr., Megan Oberle, Matt, Joe, and Tyson Broekemeier; and four great grandchildren-Lauren and Sam Theysohn and Paul and Devyn Johnson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother-Duane Oberle, and one sister-Beatrice Wulf.

Richard H. Thompson

Richard H. Thompson, 90, of Clarks, died at Memorial Hospital in Aurora on Sunday, May 2nd, 2004. Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 5th at 2: 00 P.M. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City with Rev. Paul Julian officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday, May 4th from 5 to 8 P.M. at Solt Funeral Home. Burial is in the Aurora cemetery.

Richard Henry Thompson was born on March 12, 1914, near Esbon, Kansas the son of Jacob N. and Elsie L. (Michael) Thompson. He grew up in Esbon and graduated from Esbon High School in 1933. On April 10, 1933, Richard H. Thompson and Frances Rogers were united in marriage in Smith Center, Kansas. They lived on a farm near Esbon until 1953, when they moved near Aurora where they farmed and raised livestock. They moved to their home near Clarks in 1975. Richard retired from farming in 1978, but continued to raise livestock and horses. He especially enjoyed raising longhorn cattle with his son, Randall.

Richard was a member of the Lions Club for over 30 years and was a past president, served on the Prairie Island Township Board, and the Clarks Fire Board. His love for horses began when he was a young boy, and as a young farmer he farmed with horses; and throughout his life he took great pride in raising and training them. He belonged to riding clubs in Red Cloud and Aurora and to the Lone Tree Rodeo Club. Richard also enjoyed going to stock car races.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Frances, of Clarks; one daughter-Joyce and Lanny Petit of Inland; two sons-Charles and Judy Thompson of North Platte and Randall and Sheri Thompson of Albion; seven grandchildren-Todd and Sherry Petit, Brett and Kacey Petit, Kirk and Dana Petit; Megan and Bryan Jelken; Melissa and Shawn Gilbert, Troy and Erica Thompson; and Travis and Sarah Thompson; 14 great grandchildren; one sister-Estelle Winslow of McPherson, Kansas; and one brother-Robert and Athelda Thompson of Superior.

He was preceded in death by two sisters-Lois Thompson and Ruby Lewis; and one brother-Earl Thompson.

Dee Clark

Adelia Rose "Dee" Clark, 77, of Hampton, died on Saturday, April 28, 2001, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island. Services are Monday, April 30th at 2 p.m. at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Marty, South Dakota with Father David Tickerhoof officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul’s cemetery. Visitation is Sunday, April 29th from 4 to 6 p.m. at Solt Funeral Home in Hampton.

Edie Decker

Edie Priscilla Decker, 84, of Central City, died at her daughter’s home in Central City on Thursday, April 26, 2001. Services will be Monday, April 30th at 10: 30 a.m. at the Community Bible Church in Central City with Revs. Vance Christie, Gilbert Larsen, and James Garfield officiating. Burial will be in the Central City cemetery. Visitation is Sunday, April 29th from 5 to 8 p.m. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City. Memorials are suggested to the Edie Decker Memorial Fund.

Edie was born on July 31, 1916, in Waukegan, IL to Casimir "Charles" and Anatalie "Anna" (Visnauskas) Mazrimas. She attended St. Bartholomew’s and Jackson Elementary Schools and Waukegan East High School. On August 23, 1936, Edith P. Mazrimas and Glen W. Decker were united in marriage in Waukegan. Edie was in management for independent grocery stores in Waukegan, she and Glen, Sr. owned and operated their own store for several years, and then she worked in management for Goldblatts Department Stores. In 1977, Edie retired to care for Glen, Sr. They moved to Nebraska to be closer to their daughters in 1978. Edie managed the Sunset Manor Apartments and continued to care for Glen, Sr.. Glen, Sr. died on April 6, 1983.

Edie had belonged to St. Bartholomew’s Church in Waukegan and became a member of the Evangelical Free Church in Aurora when she moved to Nebraska. She was involved in the American Legion Auxiliary for over 50 years and marched in parades with this organization until her health began to fail. Edie was involved in organizing fund drives for the American Cancer Society. She and Glen, Sr. belonged to the Slavonic Association in Waukegan where she organized the Bowlen (an outdoor sport) Leagues and Tournaments, they belonged to the Swedish Glee Club, and enjoyed dancing. Edie had played professional softball for the Mordhorst Transfer Girls in Illinois, as a young woman. She was a member of the Women’s Professional Bowling Association and the 600 Club. While living in Central City, she belonged to the Merrick County Fitness Center, she was very active in AWANA at her church, and was also very involved in the missionary work of Rick and Fairy Hattan.

Survivors include two sons-Glen W. Decker, Jr. and wife Loretta of Aurora; Robert Decker and wife Gail of Pleasant Prairie, WI; two daughters-Janice A. Rowand of Aurora; and Diana L. Holtorf and husband Kent of Central City; one brother-Joseph Mazrin of Waukegan, IL; 12 grandchildren, and 20 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband-Glen, Sr.; her parents; two sisters- Charlotte and Helen; and one brother-John.

Milton Gertsch

Milton Edwin Gertsch, 78, of Richmond, Virginia, formerly of the Platte Center and Polk areas, died at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond on April 22, 2001. Graveside services will be Friday, April 27th at 10: 00 a.m. at the Arborville cemetery near Polk, with the Rev. Lester Anderson officiating.

Milton Edwin Gertsch the son of Susan (Luchsinger) and Gilbert Gertsch was born in Platte Center, NE on December 7, 1922.

Milton received his B.S. at Iowa State University, his M.S. from Inter-American Institute of Agriculture Science in Costa Rica and his Ph.D. in Horticulture from Louisiana State University. Milton had a long international career in agriculture including 20 years in the Caribbean, South and Central America and 10 years in south and southeast Asia. Some of the countries he spent considerable time include: Cuba, Costa Rica, Colombia, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Indonesia. He had lived in the Richmond, Virginia area for the past 20 years. Milton was a farm boy at heart. He loved gardening, canning, fixing things and inventing.

Milton is survived by five daughters: Patricia Damaska, Carol Gertsch-Swanson, Susan Donohue, Clare Gertsch and Liana Gertsch; seven grandchildren and a brother-in-law Donald Schaepler. He was preceded indeath by his parents.

Marvin W. Jacobi

Marvin W. Jacobi, 84, of Clarks, died at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City on Tuesday, April 3, 2001. Services are Monday, April 9th at 10 a.m. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City with Rev. Ralph Supernaw officiating. Visitation is Sunday, April 8th from 5 to 8 p.m. at Solt Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Clarks cemetery. Memorials suggested to the Congregational Church of Clarks.

Marvin was born on November 18, 1916 in Spalding to Albert and Hazel (White) Jacobi. He was raised in Nance and Merrick Counties and received his education in Nancy County. In partnership with his brother, Raymond, Marvin farmed and raised livestock in Merrick County. They retired in 1990 and moved into Clarks.

Marvin was a veteran of the U.S. Army, Company D, 119th Infantry, 30th Division; and served during World War II from September 1942 until October 1945. He served in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, Central Europe, and fought at the Battle of the Bulge. Marvin was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, the Good Conduct Medal, the Purple Heart for being wounded in France in July of 1944, the Bronze Star, and a Unit Citation.

Marvin was a member of the American Legion in Silver Creek for 56 years and a charter member of the Clarks VFW. Honoring his fallen comrades was very important to Marvin and he had participated in the Memorial Day Services every year since 1945.

Marvin enjoyed visiting with friends and family, going to garage sales, and fishing with his good friend, Hollis Stromberg.

Survivors include two brothers-Jim (Diane) Jacobi of Clarks and John (LNora) Jacobi of Genoa; one sister-Peggy (Lisle) Mangelsen of Central City; and his nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister-Jeanette Salyers, and two brothers-Raymond and Merle.

Russell E. Beck

Russell Eugene Beck, 67, of Campbell formerly of Clarks, died on April 12th at Franklin County Memorial Hospital in Franklin, Nebraska. Services will be Saturday, April 14th at 2: 00 p.m. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City with Rev. Richard Fairbanks officiating. Burial will be in the Pierce Chapel cemetery near Clarks. Respects may be paid at the funeral home on Friday afternoon from 1 to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. until service time. Memorials are suggested to the Pierce Chapel cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.soltfh.com.

Russell was born in Clarks on February 18, 1934 to Walter L. and Mabel L. (Trullinger) Beck. He grew up near Clarks and attended Pleasant Hill School. Russell lived at home with his parents until the late 1960’s. At this time, he went to live in Bethesda Care Center in Central City and then in Aurora. For the past several years, Russell had lived at Grandview Manor in Campbell, Nebraska.

Russell was a member of the Pierce Chapel United Methodist Church near Clarks. He enjoyed watching football on television, he loved to read maps and atlases, and enjoyed drawing.

Survivors include two brothers-Walter "Duane" and wife Vera Beck of Columbus and Bill L. and wife LaRhue Beck of Clarks; three sisters-Mary L. Booth of Clarks, Jeanette Whipple of Boelus, and Margaret Ann Zumbrunn of Pine, Colorado; and 12 nieces and nephews.

Russell was preceded in death by his father in 1974 and his mother in 1996.

Ruth Hanson

Ruth Hanson, 82, of Polk, died at Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg on Saturday, April 14, 2001. Funeral services are Thursday, April 19th at 10 a.m. at the Arborville United Church of Christ near Polk with Rev. Lester Anderson officiating. Burial will be in the Stromsburg cemetery. Visitation is Wed., April 18th from 5 to 8 p.m. at Solt Funeral Home in Polk. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Arborville Church.

Ruth was born on September 10th, 1918 in Sorang, Halsingland Province, Sweden to Hans and Ida (Brodin) Meline. Her family came to American when Ruth was five years old and settled at Swede Home which is near Stromsburg, Nebraska. Ruth attended Polk County schools and after completing her education, she worked in homes in the area as a nanny and housekeeper. As a young women, Ruth went to Chicago where she continued working as a nanny and housekeeper. After several years in Chicago, she returned to Nebraska. On March 25, 1950, Ruth Meline and Edwin John Emfred Hanson were united in marriage in Polk. They farmed in the Polk area and moved into Polk in 1976. Mr. Hanson died on June 12, 1997.

Ruth grew up in the Evangelical Free Church and after her marriage, she became a member of the Arborville United Church of Christ near Polk. Ruth had belonged to the Women’s society in both the Evangelical Church and the Arborville United Church of Christ. She enjoyed baking and needlework.

Ruth is survived by one daughter-Eilene R. Hanson of Polk and one sister-Hannah Meline of Rockford, IL.

She was preceded in death by her husband and four brothers-David, Paul, Reuben, and Phillip Meline.

Marie Baker

Marie Baker, 103, of Central City died on Tuesday, August 7th at the Nebraska Veteran’s Home in Grand Island. Services are Monday, August 13th at 11: 00 a.m. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City with the Rev. Joy Savage officiating. Burial will be in the Central City cemetery. Visitation is Sunday, August 12th from 5: 00 to 7: 00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Marie was born on November 28, 1897 near Chapman to John Wesley and Elizabeth (Laub) Beman. She attended rural Merrick County School, graduated from Grand Island High School, and attended Kearney Normal School and the University of Nebraska. After completing her education, Marie taught school for several years in Merrick and Nance Counties. On September 2, 1924, Marie Beman and Vernon Justus Baker were united in marriage in Central City. They made their home in Central City, where Marie was a homemaker. Vernon died in 1978 and in 1986, Marie moved into the Nebraska Veteran’s Home in Grand Island.

Marie was a member of the United Presbyterian Church and the Women’s Association. Marie was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Arbor Chapter 200 and was a past worthy matron, the American Legion Auxiliary and was a past president, and she was also a member of the Royal Neighbors of America.

Survivors include her daughter Verna Marie and husband James W. Grant of Palmyra, Virginia; two grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

Marie was preceded in death by her husband, two sisters-Helen Beman and Alice Beman; four brothers-Leonard, John, Ralph, and Percy Beman.

Roy Larson

Roy A. Larson, 90 years of age, of Central City died on Wednesday, August 8th at the Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City. Services are Monday, August 13th, at 2: 00 p.m. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City. The Rev. Rich Savage officiating with burial in the Central City cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday, August 12th, from 5- 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the family or the the Boy Scouts.

Roy A. Larson was born on August 10, 1910 in Marquette, NE, one of six sons born to Charles O. and Martha C. (Stranberg) Larson. Roy attended school at Marquette until the 10th grade and graduated from the Central City High School in 1928. He married Iva H. Lear on August 10, 1931 in Clay Center. Roy worked as a mechanic with his brothers at the Larson Chevrolet in Central City. In 1954, he started his own business, Roy’s Service Center, and operated it for almost twenty years before selling it in 1975. He and Iva also owned and operated D and R Lanes from 1960 until 1970. Roy retired in 1975.

Roy was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Central City. He was a Boy Scout master for five years, was a licensed pilot and built the first airport in the area northeast of Central City, and was an avid husker fan.

Survivors include his wife Iva of Central City; two sons-David and wife Janet Larson of Greenfield, Indiana and Richard and wife Susie Larson of Littleton, CO; one daughter-Patricia Gerdts of The Villages, FL; nine grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and three great great grandchildren.

Roy was preceded in death by his parents, one son in infancy, and five brothers-Albin, Reuben, Irl, Paul, and Clarence.

Gladys Marie Glantz

Gladys Marie Glantz, 88, of Costa Mesa, California, formerly of Central City, died at her home on Thursday, December 13th. Graveside services will be Wednesday, December 19th at 10: 30 a.m. at the Central City cemetery with Ellen Campbell officiating. There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to The Friends Meeting House or The American Legion. Solt Funeral Home in Central City is in charge of arrangements.

Gladys was born on July 22, 1913 in Central City to Everett and Lucy (Stephens) Myers. She graduated from Central City High School and attended Nebraska Central College. Gladys taught school in Eldorado for several years. On April 8, 1932, Gladys Myers and Leonard Glantz were united in marriage in Lincoln. They made their home in Central City and had a farm implement dealership. Gladys also worked at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital for ten years. Mr. Glantz died on September 3, 1972. Gladys lived in Central City for 78 years of her life; she moved to Grand Island in 1991 and to California in 1998.

Gladys was a Birth Right Quaker, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, she enjoyed bowling and bridge.

Gladys is survived by two daughters-Jean and husband George Larkins of Lake San Marcos, California and Vickie Farrer of Grand Island; two sons-Larry and wife Lynn Glantz of Irvin, California and Donald and wife Joan Glantz of Costa Mesa, California; one sister-Barbara and husband Fred Lohde of Hemet, California; 8 grandchildren; and 9 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers-Dean and William Myers; and two sisters-Margaret Blum and Esther Newsome.

Betty Arlene Glause

Betty Arlene Glause, 71, of Chapman, died at her home on Wednesday, Dec. 5. Services will be Saturday, December 8th at 10: 30 a.m. at Zion United Methodist Church near Archer with Rev. Rich Savage officiating. Burial will be in the Archer Evangelical Community cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, December 7th from 5 to 8 p.m. at Solt Funeral Home in Central City.

Betty was born on December 18, 1929, in Palmer to Albert G. and Minnie M. (Garrett) Blauhorn. She grew up in the Palmer area, but lived in Central City with the Walter Raecke family while attending high school. She graduated from Central City High School in 1947. After completing her education, Betty worked for Commercial National Bank in Grand Island for several years. On June 4, 1950, Betty Arlene Blauhorn and John H. Glause were united in marriage at Zion United Methodist Church near Archer. They lived by Worms for several years before moving to their present home near Chapman where they farmed.

Betty was a lifelong member of the Zion United Methodist Church where she had taught bible school and Sunday School; was a member of United Methodist Women and held many offices, and she also served as church organist. Betty was a member of the neighborhood birthday club, the Prairie Creek Improvement Extension Club, and she had been a 4-H leader. Betty enjoyed her yard and plants, music, and crocheting.

Betty is survived by her husband John of Chapman; one daughter-Sharon K. and her husband Bruce Kleint of Grand Island; two sons-Craig and wife Pat Glause of Chapman and Steve and wife Beckie Glause of Chapman; two sisters-Winona and Buddy Tuttle of Aurora; Fern and Alton Jacobsen of Hastings; eight grandchildren-Todd Kleint, Travis Kleint, Justin Kleint, Amy Glause, Shelley Glause, Branden Glause, Chad Glause, and Jenny Glause; and 5 great granddaughters.

She was preceded in death by her parents.
