Leo Haith

Leo G. Haith, 81, of Central City, died on Tuesday, December 18th at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island. Services are Saturday, December 22nd at 2: 00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Central City with Rev. Joy Savage officiating. Visitation will be Friday, December 21st from 5 to 8 p.m. at Solt Funeral Home in Central City. Burial will be in the Central City cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the American Legion Baseball Program or the United Methodist Church in Central City.

Leo was born on March 2, 1920 in Auburn, Nebraska to George T. and Della Mae (Miller) Haith. He was raised in Auburn and graduated from Auburn High School in 1939. After graduation, he worked on the barges on the Missouri River before entering the US Navy. Leo served in World War II aboard the USS Crescent City. On January 20, 1939, Leo G. Haith and Donna Mae Newton were united in marriage in Auburn. After his discharge from the military, he returned to Auburn and opened Haiths Service Station. In 1946, they moved to Central City. Leo owned and operated Haith Motor Company. He also operated the Central City ambulance service for 26 years. In November of 1962, Norma Lee Gillan and Leo Haith were married . She worked with him in their business. They retired in 1993 and Norma died on January 10, 1997. Leo continued to live in Central City after his retirement and on October 23, 1997, he was united in marriage with Marie McMahon-Gee.

Leo was a member of the United Methodist Church in Central City; a fifty year member of the Masonic Lodge; he was a member of the Clarks VFW; American Legion Post 6 in Central City and the 40 and 8 Club. Leo loved horses, watching all youth sports events, and American Legion Baseball. He was awarded the Service to Mankind Award given by the Sertoma Club.

Survivors include his wife Marie of Central City; his children-Charlene (Paul) Page of Broken Bow; Leo G. Haith, Jr. of Valley; William (Deb) Beck of Medford, OR; Ruthie (John) Carrington of St. Louis; Deborah Haith of Bellevue; Deon Haith of Milwaukee, WI; Leon (Nancy) Haith of Omaha; Toria (Kent) Clausen of Central City; and Georgia (J.R.) Osbon of North Platte; one brother- Carl (Margaret) Haith of Plattsmouth; two sisters-Gladys Thystrup of China Springs, TX; and Lucile "Billie" Barnes of Fountain Valley, CA; five step-daughters - Diane (Robert) Evers of Gilbert, AZ; Rebecca (Dennis) Sealey of Seattle, WA; Hyla (Dennis) McLean of Mesa, AZ; Barbara "Bobbi" (Steve) Seymour of Mobile, Alabama; and Patricia Gee of Chandler, AZ; 11 grandchildren; 13 step grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; 9 step grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

Leo was preceded in death by his wife, Norma; two grandchildren-Jessica Haith and Jacob Erlandson; and two sisters - Cora Lea Nolte and Arline Martinson.

Lorene Johnson

Lorene I. Johnson, 70, of Clarks, died on Thursday, December 13th at Bryan LGH East in Lincoln. Funeral services will be conducted from the United Methodist Church of Clarks, NE on Monday, December 17th, at 2: 00 P.M. with the Rev. Richard Dimond officiating. Burial will be in the Pierce Chapel cemetery of rural Clarks. Visitation will be at the Solt Funeral Home chapel on Sunday, December 16th, from 5: 00 to 7: 00 P.M.

Lorene Irene Hill was born on May 26, 1931, in Oswatomie, Kansas, one of four children of William Otis and Edna Mae (Arnold) Hill. At the age of seven her mother died and she was placed in St. John’s Orphanage, in Windfield, KS, along with one sister and two brothers. A year later she was placed with Herman and Elsie Peters in Harrington, KS, she was later adopted. She attended grade school and high school in Harrington, KS where she graduated with the class of 1949. Lorene worked for several years in reuniting herself with her brothers and sister. Lorene worked as a telephone operator in Beatrice and later transferred to Grand Island in 1953. Lorene married Richard L. Johnson on September 19, 1954, in Central City, NE and made her home north of Clarks where she resided at the time of her death. She worked as a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and in the Thrift Shop in Central City and also worked as a volunteer in the Clarks Elementary School. She enjoyed her family and especially her grandchildren.

Lorene was a member of the United Methodist Church of Clarks. She was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary.

Survivors include, Richard of Clarks, Children; Son, Greg Johnson and his wife Nolyne of Clarks, daughters; Gwen Zegar and husband Dave of Grand Island and Gaelyn Johnson of Hastings, seven grandchildren and one sister Liz Hawkins and husband Tom of Beatrice. She was preceded in death by one son Glen "Charlie" in 1976 and two brothers Fred Scheele and Bill Hill.

The Solt Funeral Home of Central City is in charge of arrangements.

Ivan Smith

Ivan Edward Smith, 75, of Hampton, died at his home on Friday, Feb. 2, 2001. Funeral services will be Tuesday, Feb. 6th at 2 p.m. at the Evangelical Free Church in Aurora with Rev. Elton Berg officiating. Burial will be in the Hampton cemetery. Visitation is at the Solt Funeral Home in Hampton on Monday, Feb. 5th, from 4 to 7 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Parkinson’s Foundation.

Ivan was born on May 1, 1925, in Benedict to Arthur R. and Hazel M. (Fox) Smith. He grew up in the Benedict area, graduated from Benedict High School in 1943, and still holds the high school discus record. After graduation, Ivan tested for milk quality at dairy farms in a three county area for several years. On March 14, 1948, Ivan E. Smith and Pauline A. Ahlquist were united in marriage in Stromsburg. They have lived their entire married life in Hamilton County. Ivan worked as a dairy herdsman for Maurice Kramer for several years and then they had their own farming and dairy operation from 1950 until 1964. At this time, they moved into Hampton where Ivan worked for a short time for Ralph Arndt before he and Pauline purchased the plumbing and trenching business from Mr. Arndt. Operating Smith’s Plumbing and Well Service was a family effort, with Terry working along with his father from the time it was opened and becoming a partner in the business. When Ivan’s health no longer allowed him to work in all phases of the business, he turned management over to Terry but he was still helping in the areas of the business that he was still able to.

Ivan attended the Community Bible Church in Lushton. He was an avid outdoor sportsman until his health began failing and then he spent much of his time baking, cooking, and canning.

Ivan is survived by his wife, Pauline of Hampton; one son-Terry (LaVonne) Smith of Hampton; one sister-Bonnie (Kenneth) Foster of Isabella, MO; three grandchildren-Shelley, Eric, and Sheila Smith; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one brother-Frank Smith and one sister-Carol Cunningham.

Edward Carlson

Edward Oscar Brown "Eddie" Carlson, 87, of Grand Island, died on Sunday, December 31, 2000 at Wedgewood Care Center in Grand Island. Memorial services will be Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at 2 p.m. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City with Rev. Don Olson officiating. Burial will be in the Central City cemetery.

Eddie was born on September 24, 1913, in Central City to Oscar and Esther E. (Johnson) Carlson. He graduated from Central City High School in 1935. After graduation, he moved to California and worked with Western Electric. On December 31, 1939, Edward O. Carlson and Marjorie A. Dredge were united in marriage. On April 26, 1944 Eddie entered the United States Navy, served in the South Pacific, and received his honorable discharge on December 18, 1945. He returned to California and worked in sales and management at Pearson Ford in San Diego for 35 years. Eddie retired from Pearson Ford in the early 1980's and in 1992, he and his wife returned to Nebraska to live.

Eddie was baptized in the Swedish Lutheran Church in Central City. He was a member of the American Legion Post #6 in Central City and the 4080 Club, the Scottish Rite of Free Masonry 32nd degree in San Diego, a Master Mason in Lone Tree Lodge #36 in Central City, and The Tehama Temple. Eddie was also a member of the Airplane Pilot's Association and the Platt-Duetsche Society.

Survivors include his wife, Marjorie of Grand Island; and one niece-Marjorie Lee (Harold) Klein of Grand Island.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister-Lillian Humpal.

Esther Myrtle Lewis

Esther Myrtle Lewis, 89, of Central City, died on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City. Mrs. Lewis donated her body to medical science.

Esther was born on December 29, 1911, in Eddyville to Henry and Minnie (Kramer) Luft. Her family lived in many communities in Nebraska, including the York and Wolbach area where she received her education. As a young woman, she lived with her family in St. Paul and worked in homes and helped on the family farm. On August 27, 1933, Esther M. Luft and Fred William Lewis were united in marriage. They lived and farmed in the Ord area for several years before moving to Merrick County in the late 1930's. They lived in the Havens-Silver Creek area for a short time before moving to their farm between Central City and Clarks. Mr. Lewis died on January 28, 1994; and Mrs. Lewis continued to live on the farm until her death.

Esther's life work was being a homemaker, and she especially enjoyed gardening and embroidery work.

Survivors include one son-Donald Lewis of Central City; two daughters-Doris (Dean) Asp of Holdrege and Shirley Lewis of Central City; one brother-Luke Luft of Edgar; 3 grandchildren; and 5 great grandchildren.

Esther was preceded in death by her husband and an infant brother.

Clinton Howard "Clint" Lyons

Clinton Howard "Clint" Lyons, 71, of Central City, died at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital on Tuesday, December 26th. Services will be Friday, Dec. 29th at 2 p.m. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City with Rev. Dean Entrekin and Rev. Lance Shafer officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, Dec. 28th from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Central City cemetery.

Clint was born on May 18, 1929, in Taylor to Howard and Elsie (Bishop) Lyons. He grew up and received his education in Taylor and Sargent. After completing his education, Clint entered
the United States Army on September 23, 1947 and received his honorable discharge on February 16, 1952. Clint then moved to Central City and on August 20, 1954, Clinton H. Lyons and Levia M. Catlett were married in Central City. Clinton worked with Ross-McIlnay Hardware for nine years and then worked for the City of Central City for twenty eight years and was Superintendent of the Water Department. He retired in 1992.

Clint was a member of the First Christian Church in Central City, a lifetime member of the DAV and the VFW, and was a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed woodworking, crafts, doing word puzzles, camping, and fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Levia, of Central City; one son-Jack (Kay) Lyons of Central City; two daughters-Rhonda (Pat) Aspedon of Plattsmouth and Rachel (Mark) Waddington of Bellevue; two brothers-Cliff (Helen) Lyons of Aurora, CO and Marvin (Lois) Lyons of Shelton; three sisters-Rose Catlett of Central City, Irma (Robert) Vinzant of Elwood, and Bernice (Larry) Cronk of Lexington; six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son-Jeffery Lyons in 1967.

Jody Kay (Reyner) Carpenter

Jody Kay (Reyner) Carpenter, 44, of Dunning, formerly of the Marquette area, died at her home in Dunning on Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, after battling cancer. Services are Saturday, January 27th at 2 p.m. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City with Rev. Ralph McKay officiating. Burial will be in the Richland cemetery near Marquette. Visitation is Friday, Jan. 26th from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Jody was born on August 23, 1956 in Central City to George A. and Letha M. (Page) Reyner. She grew up in the Marquette area and graduated from Marquette High School in 1974. She then attended Beauty College in Grand Island and received her cosmotology license. Jody worked as a beautician until her marriage to Gerald Dale Carpenter on September 27, 1980 at Mamre Evangelical Free Church near Marquette. Jody and Gerald lived in the Sand Hills area of Bassett, Taylor, and Dunning where they ranched. Jody also worked at the Rock County Hospital.

Jody was a member of the Dunning Open Bible Church and a local Art Club. She enjoyed photography, sewing, and quilting.

Survivors include her husband, Gerald of Dunning, one daughter-Jackie Carpenter of Dunning, one son-Gerald Dale Carpenter II and wife Lorena of North Platte, two grandchildren-Kandace and Lane Carpenter both of North Platte, three brothers-Greg of Topeka, KS; Earl (Cindy) of Marquette; and Levi of Marquette; three sisters-Jana White of Marquette; June Brophy of Marquette; and Jill (Charles) Cadwallader of Marquette.

Jody was preceded in death by her parents.

Amber Aurora Bjorkman

Amber Aurora Bjorkman, infant daughter of Eric and Michelle Bjorkman of Norfolk, died at Children’s Hospital in Omaha on Thursday, July 5th. Services will be Sunday, July 8th at 7 p.m. at the Evangelical Free Church in Aurora with Rev. Vance Christie officiating. The family will have a visitation preceding the service on Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the church. Burial will be Monday, July 9th at 10 a.m. at the Cottonwood cemetery near Burwell.

Amber was born on May 30, 2001 at St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha, to Eric Michael and Michelle Lea (Counts) Bjorkman. She is survived by her parents Eric and Michelle of Norfolk; grandparents-Ken and Doris Counts of Atkinson and Mike and JoAnn Bjorkman of Phillips; great grandparents-Betty Dearmont of Burwell; Orville and Shirley Bjorkman of Aurora; and Dale and Nellie Grim of Bradenton, Florida; one aunt-Mandy Bjorkman of Kansas City, MO; three uncles-Walter Counts of Atkinson, Steve Counts of Norfolk, and Gary Counts of Atkinson.

Amber was preceded in death by great grandparents-Emra and Louise Counts and great grandfather Robert Dearmont.

Rusty Lee Williams

Rusty Lee Williams, 42, of Duenweg, Missouri, formerly of Central City, died at his home on Friday, October 1, 2004. Services will be Wednesday, October 6th, 2004, at 1: 00 P.M. at the Grace Lutheran Church in Central City with Sister Mary Arie and Pastor Tony Nichols officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday, October 5, 2004 from 5: 00 to 7: 00 P.M. at Solt Funeral Home in Central City. Burial will be in the Hordville cemetery.

Rusty was born on March 6, 1962, in Central City to Donald L. and Joyce E. (Nelson) Williams. He grew up in Central City, graduating from Central City High School in 1981. After his graduation, Rusty entered the United States Navy. While serving on board the naval ships, Rusty was an air traffic controlling for aircraft landing on the ships; and while serving in Rota, Spain, he was a fireman. Rusty was honorably discharged from the military in 1985 and then lived in Brownsville, Texas for about two years. For several years, he returned to live in Nebraska in the Grand Island, Central City, and Hordville areas. In addition to his work while living here, Rusty enjoyed babysitting for his sisters' children and for a special family in Grand Island. In March of 2002, Rusty moved to Siloam Springs, Arkansas and worked for DaySpring Cards. He had just moved to Duenweg, Missouri, and was to begin taking college courses in January.

Rusty was baptized and confirmed in the Grace Lutheran Church in Central City and was currently a member of the Antioch Church in Siloam Springs. His hobbies were fishing, hunting, playing cards with his Mom and Dad, Cornhusker football, music, watching movies, cooking, and spending as much time as possible with his nieces and nephews.

Those left to cherish his memory are his parents - Don and Joyce Williams of Central City; three sisters - Donna and Alan Sautter of Central City; Trudy and Doug Soll of Grand Island; Brenda and Kirk Bergeron of Houma, Louisiana; one brother - Todd and Rebecca Williams of Siloam Springs, Arkansas; his nieces and nephews - Shanien and Mark Schmierer; Melissa and Israel Ureste; Zandra and Joe Kalkwarf, Jessica Williams, Samantha, Alex, and Blake Soll, Cole and Taylor Bergeron; and three great nieces - Desree and Jocelynn Ureste; and Alexis Kalkwarf; and aunts - LaDonna and Loren 'Babs' Davis of Columbus, Joann and Marwin Rogers of Hordville, and Doris Nelson of Aurora; uncle - Dwaine and Betty Nelson of Central City; and many cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents - Emil and Helen Nelson; Fred and Verna Williams; and step grandfather - Louis Gerber; niece Niki Mesner; and uncles - Don Nelson and Bob Williams.

Gladys Merryman

Gladys Marie Blevins Merryman, 99, of Central City formerly of Chapman, died at the Long Term Care in Central City on Wednesday, October 13, 2004. Funeral services will be Monday, October 18th at 1: 00 P.M. at the First Baptist Church in Chapman with Rev. Pat Moore officiating. Visitation will be Sunday, October 17th from 5: 00 to 7: 00 P.M. at Solt Funeral Home in Central City. Burial will be in the Chapman cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Chapman cemetery Association.

Gladys was born on January 15, 1905, near Chapman in Merrick County, to Homer O. and Clara P. (Fogland) Blevins. She attended rural Merrick County School and graduated from Chapman High School. Gladys received her teaching certificate from Kearney Normal School and taught in rural school. On August 20, 1924, Gladys Blevins and Dwight Merryman were united in marriage in Council Bluffs, Iowa. They made their home in Chapman where they farmed for several years, then began their home construction business where they worked side by side until Dwight started working as a mail carrier and Gladys became a full time homemaker. Dwight died on November 11, 1988. Gladys moved into Long Term Care in Central City in 1999.

Gladys was a member of the First Baptist Church in Chapman, had been Sunday School Superintendent, and church treasurer. She became a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Laura May Chapter 251 in Chapman in 1924, giving her the distinction of having the longest membership in that chapter. Fishing and sewing were two of her favorite hobbies. In 1994, Gladys was given the Nebraska Pioneer Farm Award for the Blevins Family Farm being in Merrick County since 1893.

Those left to cherish her memory are her niece – Judy and Bill Walker of Sedalia, CO; nephew – Larry and Shari Blevins of Fort Myers, FL formerly of Lincoln; four great nieces and nephews – Stacie Esslinger, Teri Walker, David Blevins, and Julie Null; and many cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband; one sister – Marilyn Orendorff; and two brothers – Ralph and Kenneth Blevins.

Edna A. Rudolf

Edna A. Rudolf, 96 years of age of Central City, died Wednesday, November 3, 2004 at Litzenberg Long Term Care. Funeral serves will be conducted from the Zion United Methodist Church of Archer on Saturday November 6th at 10: 30 A.M. with the Rev. Rich Savage officiating. Visitation will be on Friday, Nov. 5th from 5 to 7 at the Solt Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Archer Zion cemetery. Memorials to the Archer Zion United Methodist Church and the Senior Center Central City.

Edna Augusta was born on April 4, 1908 at Duff, in Rock County, Nebraska to Adolf A. and Anna B. ( Faber) Zlomke. She moved with her family to Archer in 1915. She attended School District # 26 and graduated from Central City High School with the class of 1927 and then attended Nebraska Central College. She taught in District 38 rural school in Merrick County. She married Arthur Frederick Rudolf on June 16, 1930 they lived on the Rudolf farm for 35 years. They farmed in the Archer area until retirement when they moved into Central City in 1966. Arthur died in February of 1989.

She was a lifetime active member of the Archer Zion Evangelical- United Brethern, United Methodist Church and UMW for over 50 years. She was a Sunday School Teacher and she sponsored youth fellowship for 10 years, Secretary of the Administrative Council, member of Loyal Workers and Sunday School Class, Extension Club Ideas and later District 8 Home Makers and volunteered at the Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed working with children and youth reading, crocheting, card parties and baking. When she could no longer carry the new great grandbaby someone would put the child in her lap so she could love it.

Survivors include her daughter Joyce Medinger of Palmer, granddaughters: Patricia Medinger of Lincoln and Colleen Pallas and her husband Tim of Stromsburg and Susan Tatum and her husband Mike of Lincoln, grandsons; Michael Medinger and his wife Melanie of Archer and Nicholas Medinger of Palmer, great grand children Cale, Megan and Jenni Pallas and Calliegh Tatum, many other special friends and family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, son-in-law LeWayne Medinger four brothers: Ed, Fred, Art, George and Adolph who died in infancy eight sisters: Lena Horner, Christina Dillon, Lizzie Wagner, Anna Landstrom, Sophia Mason, Gladys Sims, Esther Rudolf and Malinda Bates.

Lucille H. Saathoff

Lucille Hazel Saathoff, 94, of Central City, died at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital on Saturday, November 27, 2004. Funeral services will be Tuesday, November 30th at 10: 30 A.M. at the Grace Lutheran Church in Central City with Sister Mary Arie officiating. Visitation will be Monday, November 29th from 5: 00 to 8: 00 P.M. at Solt Funeral Home in Central City. Burial will be in the Central City cemetery.

Lucille was born on April 26, 1910, in Odell, Nebraska, to Fred and Rose (Kriensick) Moffitt. She grew up in Odell and received her education there. On February 11, 1934, Lucille H. Moffitt and Herman F. Saathoff were united in marriage in Kansas. They lived in various communities including Elk Horn, Spalding, Rising City, and came to Central City in 1958. They managed Frontier Restaurant in Central City; and in 1960, she became the first head cook at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital. She retired in the mid-1970’s, but continued to work part-time.

Lucille was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church, a life member of the American Legion Auxiliary, and had volunteered hundreds of hours with the Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed crocheting and baking.

Those left to cherish her memory are two daughters – Betty Bruner of Mountain Home, Arkansas; Delores Anderson of Omaha; two sons – Dewayne and Jeanne Saathoff of Grand Island; and Galen and Kathy Saathoff of Clarks; two sisters – Viola McCord of Superior and Elizabeth Schultz of Hanover, Kansas; ten grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and one great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband on July 31, 1995; one granddaughter – Cherise Anderson; one great grandson; one sister – Ruth Clark; and two brothers – Fred and Jess Moffitt.

Jimmie Dean Hinkle

Jimmie Dean “Jim” Hinkle, 67, of Palmer, died on Tuesday, November 2, 2004, at Skilled Care in Grand Island after a long battle with cancer. Funeral services will be Friday, November 5th, at 2: 00 P.M. at the United Methodist Church in Palmer with Rev. Ken West officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, November 4th from 5: 00 to 7: 00 P.M. at the church. Burial will be in the Rose Hill cemetery near Palmer. Solt Funeral Home in Central City is in charge of the arrangements. Memorials are suggested to the St. Francis Hospital Skilled Care Unit or to the family.

Jimmie Dean was born on September 6, 1937 in Dannebrog to Glen H. and Mabel M. (Smyers) Hinkle. He received his education at rural Merrick County School District 53. On January 4, 1955, Jim entered the United States Army and served in Okinawa and other areas of Japan. He was honorably discharged on August 14, 1957. Jim returned to Nebraska and on October 25, 1959, Jimmie D. Hinkle and Jean A. Priess were united in marriage in Grand Island. They made their home in Grand Island, Cozad, and Chapman where Jim was employed and for the last 40 years they have lived in Palmer. Jim was employed at the Farmers Co-op Station as an attendant and then started driving truck for various companies in Grand Island, Central City, and Palmer; including T.G. Rutten, Sr. and Jr. of Palmer. He was employed by Wilson Concrete of Grand Island at the time that he was forced to retire due to his health.

Jim was a member of the American Legion Post #120 in Palmer. He enjoyed gardening and visiting and reminiscing with family and friends. Recently, he enjoyed going camping and meeting new people on these trips. His special love was spending time with his four grandchildren.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Jean of Palmer; one daughter – Judy Ann Hansen and one son – John Hinkle and his wife Bonnie all of Grand Island; four grandchildren – Kristin and Derek Hansen and Sydney and Clancey Hinkle; one brother – Glen Jr. Hinkle and his wife Dee Ann of Grand Island; two sisters – Bettie Bailey and her husband Keith of Palmer and Donna Kolar and her husband Ron of Chapman; many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister – Dorothy Nielsen.
